1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead Nifty futures and the Nifty 50 spot index as two related but different prices: spot is the index level, while futures is the traded price of a contract that expires on a specified date. Compare the same expiry at the same timestamp, identify whether each number is live, last traded, closing or settlement data, and calculate the basis as futures minus spot. Then judge that gap against financing, expected dividends and time remaining. A premium or discount by itself is not proof of arbitrage or a trading signal.
What the two prices represent
Nifty 50 spot
The spot quote is the current reference level of the Nifty 50 index. It is calculated from the index constituents; you cannot buy the index level itself as a single cash instrument. Spot is the reference used to understand how far a futures contract is trading from the underlying index.

Nifty 50 futures
A Nifty futures quote is the market price of one standardized futures contract linked to the Nifty 50. Every quote belongs to a particular expiry. NSE describes a three-month cycle of consecutive near-, mid- and far-month contracts. A near-month quote and a far-month quote are not interchangeable: each has a different amount of time for financing and dividends to affect its value.

First check: expiry and timestamp
Most bad futures-versus-spot comparisons are data-matching errors rather than market mysteries. Before doing arithmetic, write down four details for both numbers:
- Contract: near, mid or far month, plus the exact expiry date.
- Time: the timestamp, including the time zone used by the data display.
- Observation type: live quote, last traded price, official close or exchange settlement.
- Source and session: the exchange or data vendor and whether the market was open, closed or temporarily halted.
A live spot index and yesterday’s futures settlement can create an apparent gap that has nothing to do with carry. Likewise, comparing a near-month future with a far-month future can make the term structure look like a sudden pricing error. Match the expiry and observation time first; only then calculate a basis.
Calculate the basis consistently
Use one sign convention throughout your analysis:
Basis = futures price − spot index level
With this convention, a positive basis means futures are above spot, while a negative basis means futures are below spot. You can also express the gap as a percentage of spot:
Recommended Free Tools
Basis percentage = (futures − spot) ÷ spot × 100
For example, if the matched spot reading is 22,000 and the selected contract is 22,080, the basis is 80 index points and the basis percentage is approximately 0.36%. That figure is descriptive only. It does not tell you whether the difference is large or small until you consider the contract’s days to expiry, interest rates, expected dividends, liquidity, transaction costs and the exact quote types.
Why futures can be above or below spot
Financing carry
Buying the underlying exposure ties up capital. In a simplified cost-of-carry model, the financing cost pushes a futures price above spot as time to expiry increases. The longer the contract remains open, the more time there is for that carrying cost to accumulate.
Expected dividends
Dividends paid by index constituents reduce the economic value of holding the underlying during the contract period. Expected dividends therefore offset part of the financing carry. If expected dividend yield is high relative to financing, the futures premium can shrink or turn into a discount.

Time remaining
Both financing and dividends accrue over the remaining life of the contract. A far-month contract normally has more carry embedded than a near-month contract, although actual prices also reflect demand, supply, liquidity and market expectations.
A simplified fair-value equation
NSE Academy’s derivatives material illustrates the relationship with:
Fair futures value = spot × e(r − q)T
Here, r is the annualized financing rate, q is the annualized dividend yield and T is the fraction of a year until expiry. This is a model, not a guarantee that the traded quote will equal the result. Funding costs, dividend estimates, taxes, margin requirements, liquidity and market positioning can all make the traded price differ from a simplified fair value.
Worked educational example
NSE Academy gives a hypothetical example with a spot level of 6,000, financing at 10% a year, an annualized Nifty dividend yield of 2% and 60 days to expiry:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Fair value = 6,000 × e(0.10 − 0.02) × (60 ÷ 365) = ₹6,079.43
The ₹6,079.43 result is an educational illustration from that material, not a current Nifty quotation or a forecast. In the example, the positive 79.43-point difference reflects net financing carry after the assumed dividend yield for 60 days. A real-time reader would need current inputs and the exact contract expiry before drawing any conclusion.
How basis behaves as expiry approaches
All else equal, the basis tends to narrow as the contract approaches its last trading day because less time remains for carry to accumulate. NSE Academy describes this as convergence of the futures price toward the spot price near expiration. Convergence is a relationship over time, not a promise that every intraday quote will move smoothly or that the two prices will be identical before settlement.

Temporary deviations can widen during volatile markets, when funding conditions change, when dividend expectations are revised, or when one market updates faster than another. A quote that appears far from spot may also be stale, thinly traded or measured against a different observation type.
A repeatable reading procedure
- Select the contract. In the futures chain, record the exact expiry date and whether it is the near-, mid- or far-month contract. Do not rely on a label such as “Nifty futures” without the expiry.
- Synchronize the data. Capture the spot and futures values from the same timestamp or the same official closing session. Record whether each value is live, last traded, close or settlement.
- Check market status. Confirm that both values belong to the same trading day and that neither quote is delayed, halted or carried over from a previous session.
- Compute the point basis. Subtract spot from futures and state the sign convention: futures minus spot.
- Compute the percentage basis. Divide the point basis by spot and multiply by 100 when comparing contracts at different index levels.
- Estimate the carry context. Consider days to expiry, a reasonable financing assumption and expected dividends. A simple fair-value model is a starting point, not a trade instruction.
- Compare the term structure. Place near-, mid- and far-month bases side by side only after labeling each expiry. A changing basis across maturities can reflect the carry curve rather than a pricing error.
- Check settlement rules. If your purpose is accounting, performance measurement or margin reconciliation, use the exchange-defined settlement value rather than substituting a random intraday quote.
- Document the observation. Save the timestamp, expiry, quote type, source and calculation so another person can reproduce it.
Live, last traded, close and settlement are different numbers
Use the label attached to a number, not just the number itself. A live quote changes during the session. A last traded price is the most recent completed trade and can be old in a quiet contract. A closing price is calculated for the exchange’s defined closing window. An official settlement price follows the exchange’s settlement methodology and may not equal the last trade.
NSE’s settlement information says index-futures daily settlement uses the contract closing price, calculated from the last half-hour weighted average. NSE Clearing’s settlement mechanism also describes a theoretical daily settlement price for an unexpired contract that was not traded in the last half-hour, using F = S × ert. Consequently, an unexpired contract can receive a theoretical settlement value even when its last transaction occurred earlier.
For final settlement, NSE uses the relevant underlying index’s closing price on the contract’s last trading day. That final-settlement rule is not the same as taking whatever futures trade happened to be last. When checking a broker statement or exchange report, compare like with like: official settlement against official settlement, or synchronized market quotes against synchronized market quotes.
Comparing the three listed maturities
| Comparison item | Near month | Mid month | Far month |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it means | Closest listed expiry | Second consecutive monthly expiry | Third consecutive monthly expiry |
| Time for carry | Least remaining time | More time than near month | Most time in the three-contract cycle |
| Basis interpretation | Usually most sensitive to settlement and expiry effects | Interpret with its own days to expiry | Includes the longest period for financing and dividends to accrue |
| Valid comparison | Use the same timestamp, quote type and spot reference; never treat maturities as one continuous price | ||
The table describes the contract cycle, not a forecast of which contract will have the highest premium. Actual traded prices can be affected by liquidity, order flow and changing carry assumptions.
Reading positive and negative basis
| Observed relationship | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Futures above spot | The contract is trading at a positive basis. Net financing carry may exceed expected dividends, or demand and market conditions may be contributing. | It does not prove the contract is overpriced or that a risk-free arbitrage trade exists. |
| Futures below spot | The contract is trading at a negative basis. Expected dividends, funding conditions, supply and demand or other market frictions may outweigh financing carry. | It does not prove that futures must rise to spot immediately. |
| Basis changing across expiries | The term structure of carry or market positioning is changing. | It does not identify a trade without costs, margin, liquidity and execution analysis. |
| Basis moving sharply intraday | Quotes, expectations, liquidity or the underlying index may be updating at different speeds. | It does not by itself indicate a data error or guaranteed profit. |
Why a futures–spot gap is not automatically arbitrage
A theoretical gap can look attractive while being uneconomic to trade. A cash-and-carry or reverse-cash-and-carry calculation would need the actual financing rate, margin funding, expected dividends, brokerage, exchange fees, taxes, bid–ask spreads, slippage, position limits, collateral requirements and the cost of holding the offsetting position. The two legs also have to be executable at compatible prices and times.
Index futures and the spot index are not identical tradable objects. The spot index is a calculated benchmark, while a futures contract has its own order book, expiry, settlement process and margin requirements. The visible basis is therefore information about the relationship, not a self-contained profit claim.

Common mistakes and fixes
Comparing different expiries
Symptom: a near-month future is compared with a far-month future or with an unlabeled “Nifty futures” number. Fix: record the exact expiry date for every observation and calculate each basis separately.
Mixing timestamps
Symptom: the spot value is live while futures is yesterday’s close. Fix: use synchronized timestamps or clearly label the comparison as close-to-close.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Mixing quote types
Symptom: a last traded futures price is compared with an official settlement or closing index value. Fix: compare the same observation type, especially when reconciling statements.
Ignoring dividends
Symptom: every futures premium is attributed to interest. Fix: subtract expected dividend yield in the carry model and recognize that the estimate can change.
Ignoring days to expiry
Symptom: a 20-point basis is judged without knowing whether two days or two months remain. Fix: convert the gap to a percentage and interpret it with the remaining term.
Treating a model value as a market quote
Symptom: the fair-value equation is presented as the price the exchange must show. Fix: call it an estimate, state the financing and dividend assumptions, and compare it with an appropriately timed traded quote.
Assuming convergence is instantaneous
Symptom: a discount is expected to disappear immediately. Fix: understand convergence as a tendency toward expiry, with intraday deviations and settlement mechanics along the way.

A practical worksheet
For each observation, fill in one row before interpreting the result:
| Field | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Date and time | Record the exact exchange-session timestamp |
| Spot value | Nifty 50 index level at that timestamp |
| Futures expiry | Exact near-, mid- or far-month expiry date |
| Futures value | Price of that specified contract |
| Quote classification | Live, last traded, close or official settlement |
| Point basis | Futures minus spot |
| Percentage basis | Point basis divided by spot, multiplied by 100 |
| Days remaining | Calendar or exchange-defined time basis used in your model |
| Carry assumptions | Financing rate and expected dividend yield, with their source and date |
| Notes | Liquidity, unusual volatility, holiday or settlement circumstance |
This record prevents a later chart or spreadsheet from hiding the most important qualification: which contract and which type of price were used.
How to use the relationship for analysis
Market monitoring
Tracking basis by expiry can show how the market’s carry profile changes. A widening premium in a longer-dated contract may reflect updated financing or dividend expectations, while a sudden intraday move may simply reflect asynchronous quotes. Treat the movement as a question to investigate, not a directional answer.
Portfolio attribution
If an index-linked position is hedged with futures, separate index movement from basis movement when explaining returns. A hedge can gain or lose relative to the spot benchmark because the futures contract trades at a premium or discount and because that basis changes before settlement.
Settlement reconciliation
For daily accounting, use the exchange’s published settlement methodology. NSE’s last-half-hour weighted-average rule and its theoretical fallback for an untraded contract mean that the official settlement can differ from a screen’s last traded price. On the final trading day, use the underlying index close specified by the final-settlement rule.
Contract-date and source checks
NSE’s NIFTY 50 F&O page was displayed as updated 23 September 2025, while the contract specification was displayed as updated 11 August 2026. Those dates identify the versions of the pages describing the three-month cycle and expiry convention; they are not substitutes for checking the currently listed expiry. Before publishing or relying on a calculation, verify the live contract, holiday treatment and settlement definitions on NSE.
NSE Academy’s derivatives material is useful for learning the cost-of-carry framework and its convergence explanation. Its ₹6,079.43 example is hypothetical and should not be mistaken for a current market statistic. No empirical performance statistic is needed to understand the mechanics: the reader’s calculation depends on matched market data and clearly stated assumptions.
