What each indicator tells you
Moving averages describe direction and context
A moving average smooths closing prices over a selected number of trading days. The smoothing makes the broader direction easier to see than a chart covered by every daily fluctuation. A simple moving average (SMA) is the average of the closing prices in the selected period. Charting platforms may also offer exponential and weighted moving averages, which use different weighting methods.

The period is a lens, not a universal setting. A shorter period responds more quickly to recent price changes; a longer period summarizes a broader history and therefore changes more slowly. Schwab discusses 20-, 50- and 200-day examples and illustrates adding 25- and 50-day averages to a chart. Those examples are starting points for different questions, not settings that are automatically correct for every stock or investor. See Schwab’s explanation of technical indicators.

Price location and slope matter together. Price above a rising average suggests a stronger trend context than price above a flat or falling average. Price below a declining average indicates a weaker context than price below a rising one. A moving average can appear to act as support or resistance, but a touch or crossing does not guarantee that the level will hold or that a trend will continue. Because the calculation uses past prices, the average lags rather than forecasting an exact turning point.

RSI measures momentum on a 0–100 scale
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator calculated from recent closing-price changes and plotted from 0 to 100. Readings above 70 are commonly described as overbought and readings below 30 as oversold. Those are reference levels for identifying an extreme, not promises that price will reverse. RSI can stay above 70 in a powerful uptrend or below 30 in a persistent downtrend. Schwab explains these conventions and their limitations in “Technical Indicators: 3 Trading Traps to Avoid.”
For a purchase decision, the direction of RSI is often as important as its number. An RSI rising from a depressed reading may show improving momentum, while an RSI falling from a high reading may show weakening momentum. Neither observation settles the question unless price and trend context point in the same direction.
Choose a chart context before interpreting either indicator
Start with the holding period you are actually considering. A chart built around a short-term question can use a shorter moving-average period than a chart intended to evaluate a position held for years, but the period should be chosen deliberately and kept consistent when comparing stocks. A 200-day average on a daily chart answers a different question from a 20-day average on the same chart.
Next classify the price action as broadly trending upward, trending downward, consolidating, or moving erratically. In a trend, an oscillator can remain extreme for a long time. In a range, the same extreme may be followed by a reversal, but the chart must establish that range rather than assuming it exists. This classification prevents you from treating every RSI reading as an isolated event.
A five-step method for reading moving averages and RSI together

Identify the trend and the average’s slope
Ask whether the selected average is rising, falling, or essentially flat. Then check whether the stock is making a sustained series of higher prices, lower prices, or neither. The average provides a smoothed description of direction; it does not tell you how long that direction will last.

Locate price relative to the average
Record whether the current price is above or below the average and whether a recent pullback held near it. Holding above a rising average can be consistent with an uptrend. Remaining below a falling average can be consistent with continued weakness. A brief intraday touch, a one-day cross, or a single close is not proof that support or resistance has held.

Read RSI as momentum, not a verdict
Note whether RSI is rising, falling, recovering from below 30, weakening from above 70, or remaining in an extreme zone. “Oversold” does not mean “cheap,” and “overbought” does not mean “must fall.” Persistent trends can carry RSI beyond conventional thresholds for an extended period.

Look for agreement and define invalidation
When price is holding above a rising average and RSI improves after a pullback, the trend and momentum readings are aligned with a possible continuation. If RSI looks better while price remains under a falling average, or if RSI is oversold while price keeps making new lows, the readings conflict. Waiting for additional price confirmation is one defensible response.
Before buying, write down what would invalidate the idea. Examples include a close back below the level you expected to hold, a renewed sequence of lower lows, or momentum failing to recover. Also decide the maximum loss you are willing to accept. An indicator cannot supply that risk limit for you.

Check evidence outside the two indicators
Review the company’s fundamentals, the market and sector environment, trading volume, liquidity, your time horizon, and your risk tolerance. Technical signals can be misleading when a stock is thinly traded, when a sector is moving sharply, or when a fundamental event changes the valuation. Schwab states that technical analysis should not be the sole means of investment research and that charts do not guarantee future performance; its broader discussion is available in “How to Pick Stocks: Fundamentals vs. Technicals.”
How to interpret common combinations
Price above a rising average and RSI strengthening
This is the clearest form of agreement between the two indicators: the smoothed trend is positive and recent momentum is improving. It may support a hypothesis that a pullback is ending or that the existing trend is continuing. You still need to see how price behaves at the relevant level and decide where the idea would be wrong. A high RSI does not make the setup safer; if RSI is already above 70, the trend may be strong, but the risk of buying after an extended move also deserves attention.

The trend context remains constructive, while momentum is weakening. This can occur during a normal pause, a deeper pullback, or the early stage of a trend change. Examine whether price is still holding the average and whether the average is still rising. A falling RSI alone is not a sell command, but it removes the confirmation that momentum is accelerating.

Price below a declining average and RSI below 30
Both readings can describe weakness rather than a bargain. An oversold RSI can remain depressed while a downtrend persists. Buying solely because RSI crossed below 30 ignores the moving-average context and the possibility of further losses. If the thesis is a reversal, look for evidence that price has stopped making lower lows and that momentum is recovering rather than treating the first oversold reading as confirmation.
Price below a falling average but RSI rising
Momentum may be improving before the broader trend has changed. The conflict calls for patience or a clearly defined, higher-risk reversal plan rather than an automatic purchase. A move back above a relevant average, a sustained change in its slope, or other price confirmation may matter more than a single RSI uptick.
Price consolidating around a flat average
A flat average and oscillating RSI often indicate that the chart lacks a clear directional trend. In that setting, 70 and 30 may be watched as range extremes, but a break can fail. Reduce the importance assigned to either indicator until price establishes a direction and your selected timeframe remains appropriate.

One possible educational setup is an established uptrend in which price retreats toward a rising moving-average area. The question is not whether price merely touches the line; it is whether the level holds and whether buying interest returns. RSI can add context if it had weakened during the pullback and then begins to rise.
Schwab gives an illustrative example in which a possible clearer buy signal combines RSI moving back above 30 with price breaking above the 20-day SMA. That is an example of confirmation, not a validated recipe or a guarantee. Before using such a framework, specify the timeframe, the price level that must hold, the event that counts as renewed strength, and the point at which the setup is invalidated. Do not assume that the same thresholds work across every stock or market regime.
Comparing two candidate charts consistently
When two stocks appear attractive, compare their chart conditions using the same timeframe and the same indicator definitions. The comparison should describe evidence, not declare that one security is suitable for you.

Adding the studies in a charting platform
Schwab’s Stock Hacker walkthrough demonstrates adding a 50-day SimpleMovingAvg and an RSI study to a thinkorswim chart. The chart timeframe is adjustable, so match it to the question you are asking. Treat those settings as a platform example rather than a recommendation that every chart should use a 50-day average.

In a typical chart interface, open the stock chart, add the moving-average study, select the period and calculation type, then add RSI and verify that its scale runs from 0 to 100. Apply the same settings to every chart in a comparison. Changing the timeframe or period midway can make two screenshots look comparable when they are not.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying automatically below RSI 30
Below 30 identifies a commonly watched oversold condition; it does not identify a guaranteed reversal. Correct the mistake by checking whether price is still below a declining average and whether new lows are continuing. If weakness persists, the oversold reading may be describing the trend rather than predicting its end.
Selling automatically above RSI 70
Above 70 can persist in a strong advance. Correct the mistake by checking whether price remains above a rising average and whether the trend is still making progress. A high reading can warn that momentum is extended, but it is not a stand-alone exit instruction.
Treating a moving-average cross as an exact turning point
Moving averages lag because they summarize past prices. A cross can occur after much of the move has already happened, or it can reverse quickly in a choppy market. Use the cross as context and examine subsequent price behavior instead of assuming it marks the precise top or bottom.
Mixing incompatible timeframes
Reading a 20-day average on one timeframe and RSI on another can create a false sense of agreement. Keep the chart timeframe and indicator periods explicit. If you change them, recognize that you are asking a different question.

Ignoring liquidity, volume and events
Indicators are calculated from price data and may not reveal a wide spread, thin trading, an earnings announcement, or a sector shock. Review liquidity and volume, identify scheduled events that could change price abruptly, and consider whether the position size fits your risk plan.
Using too many indicators
Adding more studies can create several versions of the same price information rather than independent confirmation. Moving average and RSI already provide two different views: smoothed direction and momentum. Add another tool only when you can explain what distinct question it answers.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Is the selected timeframe appropriate for the intended holding period?
- Is the moving average rising, falling or flat?
- Is price above or below it, and did a recent pullback hold?
- Is RSI strengthening, weakening, recovering from an extreme or staying extreme?
- Do price action and the two indicators agree, or are they in conflict?
- What specific price behavior would invalidate the idea?
- What loss is acceptable, and does the position size respect that limit?
- Have fundamentals, sector and market conditions, volume and liquidity been considered?
What this method can and cannot establish
Moving averages and RSI can organize a chart into two useful questions: “What direction has price generally taken?” and “Is recent momentum improving or weakening?” Their combination may help you avoid buying an oversold reading in an obvious downtrend or chasing a strong trend without noticing that momentum is fading.

They cannot establish a stock’s intrinsic value, predict how long a trend will last, or prove that a trade will be profitable. No independent performance statistic in the cited material demonstrates that combining these indicators produces a reliable return advantage. Use the chart as one part of research and risk management, not as a substitute for either.
