Read LG Electronics’ earnings report as a walk from sales to net income, not as a single revenue headline. First identify whether the figures are consolidated or separate-company, the period covered, and whether the comparison is year over year or sequential. Then calculate gross, operating and net margins from the same statement.
LG’s 2025 consolidated results show why this order matters: revenue reached a record level, but gross and operating margins narrowed. The report therefore describes a business that sold more while retaining less after direct costs and operating expenses.

1. Confirm exactly which LG statement you are reading
The first line of analysis is scope. LG Electronics publishes consolidated financial information for the group and separate financial statements for LG Electronics Inc. itself. Those documents answer different questions and their totals are not interchangeable.

A consolidated income statement combines LG Electronics Inc. with subsidiaries that are included in the group accounts, subject to consolidation rules and eliminations. It is the appropriate starting point for judging the economic scale and profitability of the LG Electronics group as investors usually understand it.
#1 Best Overall
Separate-company statements
A separate statement presents LG Electronics Inc. on its own legal-entity basis. Subsidiary sales and costs are not shown in the same way as in the consolidated accounts, and dividends, investment results or intercompany transactions can make the pattern look very different from the group result.
Check period and comparison
Record three labels before copying any number:
- Scope: consolidated or separate-company.
- Period: quarter, nine months or full year.
- Comparison: year over year (the same period in the prior year) or sequential (the immediately preceding quarter).
A full-year consolidated figure cannot be compared with a quarterly separate-company figure. Likewise, a quarter that is seasonally strong may look weak sequentially while still growing year over year.
2. Follow the income statement from sales to net income
LG’s income statement is most useful when read vertically. Each line explains what happened to the money generated by customers before it became profit available to shareholders.
Sales
Sales, or revenue, measure the value of products and services recognized during the period. Growth can come from higher unit volume, price increases, acquisitions, currency translation or a shift toward businesses such as platforms and subscriptions. Revenue alone does not reveal how much of each won remains after costs.
Cost of goods sold
Cost of goods sold (also called cost of sales) captures direct production or delivery costs: components, materials, manufacturing labor and other costs directly tied to what was sold. Subtracting it from sales gives gross profit.
Gross profit = Sales − Cost of goods sold
Gross profit and gross margin
Gross profit is the amount left to fund research and development, selling, administration, marketing, service and other operating activities. Gross margin converts that amount into a percentage of sales:
Gross margin = Gross profit ÷ Sales × 100
A falling gross margin can indicate heavier promotions, unfavorable product mix, higher component or logistics costs, unfavorable currency movement or pricing pressure. A rising margin can reflect price increases, cost reductions or a larger contribution from products and services with better economics. It is the first test of whether additional sales are economically attractive before overhead is considered.

Operating expenses include selling and marketing, general and administrative, research and development, customer service, restructuring and similar costs. Some expenses scale with sales; others are largely fixed for a period. Marketing for a launch, a reorganization charge or an investment in a new platform can therefore reduce operating profit even when revenue is rising.
Operating income and operating margin
Operating income is profit after direct costs and operating expenses, before financing and income taxes. Operating margin is the clearest high-level measure of profitability from the core business:

Operating margin = Operating income ÷ Sales × 100
When readers ask, “What is LG’s operating margin?”, they normally mean this consolidated operating-income percentage for the stated period. Always attach the period and scope to the answer; there is no single timeless LG operating margin.
Non-operating items, tax and net income
Below operating income, the statement includes finance income or expense, gains or losses from investments, taxes, discontinued operations and other items. Net income is the final reported profit:
Net margin = Net income ÷ Sales × 100
Net margin can move independently of operating margin. A tax change, a financing gain, an investment revaluation or a one-time below-the-line item can raise or reduce net income without changing the economics of selling appliances, components or services. Use net margin to understand the shareholder result, but use operating margin to diagnose the operating business.
3. LG Electronics’ 2025 consolidated numbers, calculated
LG Electronics’ official 2025 consolidated income statement reports the following figures in KRW billions:
| Line | 2025 | Calculation or meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Sales | KRW 89,201 billion | Total revenue recognized during the year |
| Cost of goods sold | KRW 68,359 billion | Direct production and delivery costs |
| Gross profit | KRW 20,842 billion | Sales minus cost of goods sold |
| Operating income | KRW 2,478 billion | Profit after operating expenses |
| Net income | KRW 1,220 billion | Profit after non-operating items and tax |
Using those reported amounts, the margins are approximately:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Margin | Formula | 2025 result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross margin | 20,842 ÷ 89,201 | 23.4% |
| Operating margin | 2,478 ÷ 89,201 | 2.8% |
| Net margin | 1,220 ÷ 89,201 | 1.4% |
For comparison, the official 2024 consolidated figures were sales of KRW 87,728 billion, gross profit of KRW 21,379 billion, operating income of KRW 3,420 billion and net income of KRW 591 billion. They imply approximate margins of 24.4% gross, 3.9% operating and 0.7% net.
The year-to-year pattern is therefore mixed: sales increased, while gross margin fell by about one percentage point and operating margin fell by roughly 1.1 percentage points. Net margin increased because 2024 net income was unusually low relative to sales. A higher net margin in this comparison does not erase the deterioration in the operating margin.
4. Why profit can fall while sales rise
LG reported record annual revenue for the second consecutive year, yet operating profit declined year over year. Its official results release attributes pressure to increased marketing expenditure for display-based products and one-off costs associated with organizational optimization.
Rank #3
Marketing investment
Marketing is an operating expense. A company may spend more to launch a display product, build a category or support a channel before the resulting volume or lifetime customer value appears. If the extra spending grows faster than gross profit, operating income falls even when sales rise.

A restructuring or organizational-optimization charge is often described as one-off, but the cash cost and accounting treatment still affect the reported period. Separate the reported result from a result excluding a clearly identified item, and ask whether management expects the cost to recur. Do not automatically treat every unusual expense as irrelevant: repeated “one-off” charges are evidence of an ongoing cost.
Mix and pricing
Revenue growth can be concentrated in lower-margin products, regions or channels. A larger share of promotional sales can increase units while reducing gross profit per unit. Conversely, a smaller but higher-margin service or platform business can improve profitability without adding as much revenue. The income statement tells you that the margin changed; segment disclosures and management commentary help identify why.
Input costs and currency
Component prices, freight, labor and foreign-exchange movements can squeeze gross margin. Currency translation can also make reported sales rise or fall without an equivalent change in local-currency demand. Check whether the release identifies input-cost, currency or geographic effects before assigning a structural explanation.
5. Read LG’s business segments for the source of profit
Group margins are an average of businesses with different economics. Compare each segment’s revenue growth with its operating-profit growth, then examine whether growth comes from B2B contracts, direct-to-consumer hardware, subscriptions, platforms or services.

B2B and non-hardware activities
LG’s 2025 release describes vehicle solutions, HVAC and component solutions as B2B activities. It also highlights the webOS platform and maintenance services as non-hardware activities, alongside direct-to-consumer subscription models and online sales.
| Activity or measure | 2025 disclosure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| B2B revenue | KRW 24.1 trillion, up 3% year over year | Shows scale and growth of business-to-business operations, but not their margin by itself |
| Vehicle Solution plus Eco Solution operating profit | More than KRW 1 trillion combined | Indicates that these two activities together crossed a reported profit milestone; it is not a group operating-profit total |
| Subscription-model revenue | Up 29% year over year and approaching KRW 2.5 trillion | Recurring-style revenue can change mix and customer economics; assess associated service and acquisition costs |
Do not add the figures in this table to consolidated sales or operating income. They describe selected activities and combinations, while the consolidated statement includes all segments, intersegment eliminations and group-level items.
Home Appliance Solution Company
The Home Appliance Solution Company reported 2025 revenue of KRW 26.13 trillion and operating profit of KRW 1.28 trillion. The release says revenue reached an all-time high and that operating profit increased slightly when one-off costs are excluded.
Its implied segment operating margin, calculated from the reported figures, is approximately 4.9% (1.28 ÷ 26.13). Treat that as a segment-level ratio, not as the margin of the entire group. Segment definitions, eliminations and allocation methods can differ from the consolidated presentation.
Rank #4
A practical segment comparison grid
- Revenue growth versus profit growth: profit growing faster than revenue usually signals operating leverage; the reverse warrants investigation.
- Segment operating margin: compare profitability, not only sales rank.
- B2B versus consumer exposure: contracts may have different cycles, pricing power and concentration risks.
- Hardware versus platform or service revenue: recurring or non-hardware activities may alter gross-margin and retention profiles.
- Reported versus adjusted profit: show any exclusion only when LG clearly identifies the item and explain what remains in reported results.
- Geography, product, currency and input costs: use management commentary to connect movements to causes.
6. Do not mix consolidated and separate-company results
The difference is material in LG’s 2025 disclosures. The separate financial statements report sales of KRW 29,554,826 million, gross profit of KRW 7,078,809 million and an operating loss of KRW 787,504 million. The consolidated official page reports KRW 89,201 billion of sales and KRW 2,478 billion of operating income.
| Basis | 2025 sales | 2025 gross profit | 2025 operating result | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Consolidated group | KRW 89,201 billion | KRW 20,842 billion | KRW 2,478 billion operating income | KRW billions |
| Separate LG Electronics Inc. | KRW 29,554,826 million | KRW 7,078,809 million | KRW 787,504 million operating loss | KRW millions |
The units can be reconciled mathematically—1,000 million won equals 1 billion won—but the accounting scope cannot. Label the basis every time you quote a figure. A headline that combines consolidated sales with separate-company operating profit is not a meaningful margin calculation.
7. A repeatable workflow for reading any LG earnings release
- Open the official release and statement for the same period. Confirm the reporting date, quarter or full year, currency and whether the table is consolidated.
- Record sales and cost of goods sold. Calculate gross profit and gross margin using the exact same scope and period.
- Scan operating-expense lines. Look for selling and marketing, research and development, administration, service, restructuring and other operating costs that changed materially.
- Calculate operating margin. Divide operating income by sales and compare with the same period in the prior year and the preceding quarter when both are available.
- Read below operating income. Identify finance items, investment gains or losses, tax changes and discontinued operations before interpreting net income.
- Move to segment tables. Compare revenue, operating profit and margin by business; note B2B, consumer, platform, subscription and service exposure.
- Test recurring quality. Mark clearly identified one-off costs separately, but check whether similar charges have appeared repeatedly.
- Read management’s explanation. Use the earnings-call materials or webcast to connect margin movement with pricing, volume, mix, costs, currency, marketing and restructuring.
- Write a one-sentence verdict with qualifiers. For example: “Sales grew year over year, but operating margin narrowed because marketing and organizational-optimization costs increased.” Keep the scope and period in that sentence.
8. Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using revenue as a proxy for success
Mistake: concluding that record sales automatically mean better performance.
Correction: calculate gross and operating margins. If sales rise while both margins fall, investigate pricing, mix, input costs and operating expenses.
Quoting an operating margin without a period
Mistake: saying “LG’s operating margin is 2.8%” as if it were permanent.
Correction: write “LG Electronics’ 2025 consolidated operating margin was approximately 2.8%,” then identify the comparison period.
Confusing gross and operating margin
Mistake: treating gross margin as the profit left after marketing, research and administration.
Correction: gross margin stops after direct costs; operating margin includes operating expenses.

Correction: read finance, tax and other non-operating lines before drawing an operating conclusion.
Mixing units or scopes
Mistake: dividing separate-company operating loss by consolidated sales, or comparing millions with billions without conversion.
Correction: match scope, period, currency and units before calculating any ratio.
Recommended Free Tools
Removing every unusual cost
Mistake: presenting an adjusted number as if it were the reported result.
Correction: show reported profit first, identify the specific cost, and explain whether management says it is nonrecurring. Repeated restructuring charges may be economically recurring even if each event is labeled one-off.
9. Where to find the authoritative numbers
Use LG Electronics’ investor-relations financial-information page for consolidated historical tables and financial statements. Use the investor-relations events page for quarterly earnings releases, conference-call materials and scheduled dates. As of October 19, 2026, that events page lists 2026 first- and second-quarter releases and a third-quarter earnings conference call scheduled for October 28, 2026.
Apply this source order:
- LG Electronics’ official earnings release and financial statements.
- LG Electronics’ investor-relations financial-information tables.
- The earnings-call transcript or webcast for management’s explanations.
- Secondary coverage for context only, never as a substitute for the reported figures.
Official wording can be useful when describing a record: LG’s reviewed results release says, “LG Electronics achieved its highest-ever annual revenue for the second consecutive year.” Treat that as the company’s statement about its reported revenue record, not as evidence that every profitability measure improved.

Use the three margins together. Gross margin answers whether the products and services generated more or less profit after direct costs. Operating margin answers whether the business retained enough of that gross profit after running and investing in the organization. Net margin answers what remained after financing, taxes and other non-operating effects.
For LG’s 2025 consolidated result, the combination of record sales, lower gross margin and lower operating margin points to a profitability squeeze rather than a simple demand failure. The next analytical question is durability: determine whether marketing and organizational-optimization costs are temporary, whether mix is shifting toward lower-margin revenue, and whether B2B, platform, subscription or service growth can improve the margin profile over subsequent periods.
