How to Read Bird Construction’s Earnings Reports and Call Transcripts

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read Bird Construction’s earnings materials in a fixed order: start with the quarterly release, verify the financial statements, use the MD&A to explain movements, then test management’s explanations against the presentation and call transcript. Keep reported IFRS results separate from Bird’s adjusted measures, and treat Contracted Backlog as firmer than Pending Backlog. For a current reference point, Bird reported C$1,043.3 million of construction revenue in Q2 2026, up 22.6% year over year, more than C$6.1 billion of Contracted Backlog and C$6.0 billion of Pending Backlog at June 30, 2026 (Bird Construction Inc., 2026).

What you should collect before reading

Bird’s investor-relations page is the canonical index for quarterly releases, financial statements, management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), earnings presentations, call recordings and annual filings. Download the documents for the same reporting period so that dates, definitions and comparative figures line up.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Quarterly earnings release: headline revenue, earnings, backlog, awards, management’s quote and outlook language.
  • Condensed financial statements: reported revenue, gross profit, operating income, net income, earnings per share (EPS), cash flow, debt and working-capital movements.
  • MD&A: explanations for project timing, mix, margins, seasonality, segment performance, liquidity, risks and metric definitions.
  • Earnings-call presentation: the measures management chooses to emphasize and the strategic framing of the quarter.
  • Call recording or transcript: explanations of changes, customer or project timing, margin assumptions, backlog conversion, capital allocation and analyst challenges.
  • Annual report and annual information form (AIF): the business model, risk factors, governance, contractual context and a full-year baseline.

Save the prior-year comparative release and the preceding quarter as well. A single quarter can look strong or weak because of project timing; a trend requires consistent period-to-period comparisons.

Step 1: Extract facts from the earnings release

Read the release once without interpreting it. Record the reporting period, currency, headline revenue, earnings, cash-flow references, backlog, major awards and the exact wording of the outlook. Then read it again for qualifiers such as “organic,” “adjusted,” “before non-cash working capital,” “more than,” or “expected.” These words determine what a number actually means.

Revenue and growth

Bird reported C$1,043.3 million of construction revenue in Q2 2026, a 22.6% increase from Q2 2025. More than 80% of that growth was organic, according to Bird’s Q2 2026 materials. “Organic” indicates growth from the existing business rather than acquired operations; it does not by itself indicate whether the work is more profitable or produces more cash.

For comparison, Q1 2026 construction revenue was C$783.4 million, up 9.2% year over year. Do not compare the Q1 and Q2 percentages as if they were sequential growth rates: each is measured against the corresponding quarter of the prior year.

Management’s quote and outlook

Management’s opening quote is useful for identifying the intended narrative, not for replacing the numbers. In the Q1 2026 release, President and CEO Teri McKibbon said Bird delivered “a strong start to 2026, with organic revenue growth, stable margins and solid cash flow that reflect the resilience of our diversified One Bird platform.” Treat “stable margins” and “solid cash flow” as claims to test in the statements and MD&A.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outlook language is forward-looking. Bird’s 2025 year-end release described near-term revenue timing shifts while saying the company continued to progress margins and strengthen the business. Record the period to which an expectation applies, the assumptions management gives, and the risks or timing dependencies. Compare the expectation with the next reported result rather than treating it as a result already achieved.

Step 2: Verify the financial statements

The statements establish what Bird actually reported under IFRS. Build a small period-over-period worksheet before considering adjusted figures.

Income statement checks

  1. Copy construction revenue for the current and comparative periods.
  2. Check gross profit and gross margin. Margin is gross profit ÷ revenue; use the same scope and period for both numbers.
  3. Check operating income, net income attributable to shareholders and basic and diluted EPS, if presented.
  4. Note unusual items, acquisition effects, fair-value movements or other items that may explain a gap between IFRS earnings and adjusted earnings.

Revenue growth without a comparable improvement in gross profit or operating income can reflect mix, project timing, cost pressure or low-margin volume. The MD&A should explain the driver; do not infer one from revenue alone.

Cash-flow and balance-sheet checks

Read operating cash flow, investing cash flow, financing cash flow, cash balances, debt and working-capital accounts together. A construction company can report accounting profit while cash is temporarily tied up in receivables, contract assets, inventory, payables or other project balances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bird reported C$39.7 million of operating cash flow before investments in non-cash working capital in Q1 2026. This is not the same as IFRS cash flow from operations and should not be compared with another company’s “operating cash flow” unless the definitions match. Locate the reconciliation in the release or MD&A and identify how much cash was absorbed or released by non-cash working-capital movements.

Step 3: Use the MD&A to explain the numbers

The MD&A is where Bird connects results to project execution. Read the sections on revenue recognition, project timing, contract mix, margins, seasonality, liquidity and risk. Then check whether the explanation is consistent with the statement lines.

Project timing and seasonality

Construction revenue can move between quarters as projects reach milestones, weather affects work, customers change schedules or awards convert into active work. A timing explanation should identify the affected market, project stage or period—not simply label the result “volatile.” Compare the explanation with contract assets, receivables, backlog conversion and subsequent-quarter revenue.

Segments and market mix

Where Bird discloses Buildings, Industrial, Infrastructure or maintenance activity, record each market’s contribution and the margin or timing commentary attached to it. A consolidated margin change may result from mix even when individual projects perform as expected. Do not create segment comparisons when the period’s disclosure does not provide comparable figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Definitions and reconciliations

Use Bird’s own definitions for Backlog, Pending Backlog and every adjusted measure. A definition in the MD&A or a reconciliation table controls how you calculate a trend. If a metric changes definition, annotate the break rather than joining the series as though it were continuous.

Step 4: Understand Contracted Backlog versus Pending Backlog

Contracted Backlog

Backlog is contracted work expected to be performed and recognized as revenue over time. It is an indicator of future revenue visibility, not a promise that all of the amount will become near-term revenue or produce a particular margin. Track the opening balance, new awards, work executed and closing balance.

Pending Backlog

Pending Backlog is work awarded but not yet contracted. It can indicate potential future activity, but conversion is less certain than for Contracted Backlog. Examine the expected conversion timing and how much is connected to master service agreements or recurring work. Pending Backlog should never be added to Contracted Backlog and presented as committed revenue.

Bird’s 2026 reference points

Reporting date Construction revenue Year-over-year growth Contracted Backlog Pending Backlog
March 31, 2026 (Q1) C$783.4 million 9.2% C$5.4 billion C$5.6 billion
June 30, 2026 (Q2) C$1,043.3 million 22.6% More than C$6.1 billion C$6.0 billion

These are quarter-specific reported figures from Bird’s 2026 releases. The Q2 backlog values are stated as “more than C$6.1 billion” for Contracted Backlog and C$6.0 billion for Pending Backlog; do not convert the first into an exact figure. Backlog can rise because awards exceed work executed, because Pending Backlog converts, or because of changes in project scope. The bridge in the MD&A tells you which explanation applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the backlog bridge

For each quarter, write this bridge in the company’s disclosed terms:

  1. Opening Contracted Backlog.
  2. New contracted awards.
  3. Amounts converted from Pending Backlog, if separately disclosed.
  4. Work executed or revenue recognized against backlog.
  5. Other adjustments, cancellations or scope changes, if disclosed.
  6. Closing Contracted Backlog.

In Q1 2026, Bird said backlog additions exceeded work executed by C$295.2 million, or 37.7%. That relationship indicates that additions outpaced the work removed through execution during the quarter; it does not mean revenue increased by 37.7% or that all additions will convert immediately.

Step 5: Separate IFRS results from adjusted measures

Bird uses Adjusted Earnings, Adjusted EBITDA, Adjusted EBITDA Margin and Adjusted EPS. Bird states that these are non-GAAP measures or ratios, are not standardized under IFRS and may not be comparable with similarly named measures at other companies.

How to read an adjusted measure

  1. Start with the corresponding IFRS amount: net income for adjusted earnings, operating results and depreciation-related lines for EBITDA, or IFRS EPS for adjusted EPS.
  2. Read Bird’s reconciliation and list every adjustment, including whether it is recurring or non-recurring.
  3. Check whether the adjustment affects cash. An expense can be excluded from an adjusted metric and still require cash payment.
  4. Use the adjusted figure to understand management’s view of underlying performance, but retain the IFRS figure for cross-company and period comparisons.

Adjusted EBITDA Margin is generally an adjusted EBITDA-to-revenue ratio, but use Bird’s displayed formula and scope. Never compare the ratio with a contractor that calculates EBITDA or adjustments differently without normalizing the definitions.

Step 6: Read the earnings presentation for emphasis

The presentation is a map of what management wants investors to notice. Mark every chart on revenue, margins, backlog, awards, cash flow, market mix and outlook. Then ask what is absent: a strong backlog slide may not be accompanied by a cash-conversion slide, while a margin discussion may omit working-capital detail that appears in the MD&A.

Copy the period, units and whether a chart is quarterly, year-to-date or trailing. A percentage shown on a slide can refer to a different denominator than the headline release. Reconcile slide totals to the statements before using them in your own comparison.

Step 7: Read the call transcript as an evidence test

Use the recording or transcript after you know the reported numbers. Search for backlog, margin, cash flow, working capital, timing, conversion, guidance, maintenance, Buildings, Industrial and Infrastructure.

Build a claim-to-number log

Transcript item What to record How to test it
Revenue or demand claim Market, project and expected timing Compare with reported revenue, awards and backlog additions.
Margin claim Driver, assumptions and affected segment Check gross profit, operating income and adjusted reconciliations.
Cash-flow claim Operating cash flow definition and working-capital effect Reconcile to the cash-flow statement and the C$39.7 million Q1 2026 figure before non-cash working-capital investments.
Backlog-conversion claim Contract status, timing and cancellation or execution risks Separate Contracted Backlog from Pending Backlog and compare the next quarter’s bridge.
Guidance or outlook Period, range, assumptions and risks Record the statement, then compare it with the next reported period.

Give extra weight to analyst questions. Questions that force management to explain project timing, margin risk, liquidity or backlog conversion often reveal assumptions that prepared remarks leave implicit. A confident answer is still an expectation; it becomes evidence only when later filings show delivery.

How to compare two quarters or years without mixing definitions

Comparison axis What to capture Question to answer
Revenue Reported growth and organic growth where disclosed Is growth from existing operations, acquisitions, timing or a combination?
IFRS profitability Gross profit, operating income, net income and EPS Did accounting profit improve with revenue, and did margins hold?
Adjusted profitability Adjusted earnings, EBITDA, margin and EPS with reconciliations Which adjustments explain the difference from IFRS, and are they recurring?
Cash conversion Operating cash flow, earnings and working-capital movements Is reported profit becoming cash, or is cash tied up in projects?
Contracted Backlog Opening balance, awards, conversions, execution and closing balance Is the backlog growing faster than work is being delivered?
Pending Backlog Amount, conversion timing and master-service or recurring-work exposure How much future activity is not yet contracted?
Market mix Buildings, Industrial, Infrastructure and maintenance disclosure Did mix change the growth rate, margin or timing profile?
Outlook versus delivery Earlier expectations and the next reported result Did management meet, exceed or revise its stated assumptions?

Use the same period basis throughout: quarter against the same quarter a year earlier, or year-to-date against the same year-to-date period. Keep currency in Canadian dollars unless a document explicitly presents another currency.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling Pending Backlog contracted revenue

Correction: show the two balances in separate columns and explain that Pending Backlog has greater conversion uncertainty.

Using adjusted EBITDA as if it were IFRS profit

Correction: put IFRS profit measures first, then show Bird’s reconciliation and the precise adjusted definition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading revenue growth as cash growth

Correction: compare earnings with operating cash flow and identify the working-capital movement. Q1 2026’s C$39.7 million figure is specifically before investments in non-cash working capital, so it cannot stand in for unrestricted cash generation.

Comparing a quarterly growth rate with a sequential change

Correction: label Q1 2026’s 9.2% and Q2 2026’s 22.6% as year-over-year rates. Calculate sequential changes separately from the reported quarterly revenue amounts if needed.

Treating an outlook statement as a result

Correction: record the forecast date, assumptions, timing and risks, then check the next release and statements.

Ignoring definition changes

Correction: read the current MD&A definitions and reconciliations before extending a multi-year trend. If Bird changes a measure, mark the break and avoid false precision.

A repeatable 30-minute reading checklist

  1. Write the period end, comparative period and currency at the top of your notes.
  2. Record revenue, year-over-year growth and the organic portion, if disclosed.
  3. Copy IFRS gross profit, operating income, net income, EPS and cash-flow figures.
  4. Mark working-capital movements and any “before” or “after” qualification attached to cash flow.
  5. Record opening and closing Contracted Backlog, additions, conversions and work executed.
  6. Record Pending Backlog separately, including expected conversion timing and contract status.
  7. List adjusted measures and copy Bird’s reconciliation rather than recreating it from memory.
  8. Read the MD&A explanation for every material change in revenue, margin, cash or backlog.
  9. Search the transcript using the key terms and log each management claim beside the matching reported figure.
  10. Write down the outlook assumptions and revisit them when the next quarter is published.

Applied to 2026, this process keeps the evidence in the right order: Q2’s C$1,043.3 million of construction revenue and 22.6% year-over-year growth are tested against IFRS profit and cash flow; the more-than-C$6.1 billion Contracted Backlog is kept distinct from C$6.0 billion of Pending Backlog; and Q1’s C$295.2 million backlog-addition advantage and C$39.7 million pre-working-capital cash-flow measure are interpreted with their stated qualifications.
