That process shows whether results are being driven by lending spreads, fees and markets activity, cost control, or changing credit conditions.
For context, Bank of America reported $31.6 billion of total revenue in the second quarter of 2026, a $1.4 billion provision for credit losses, $9.1 billion of net income and diluted earnings per share of $1.21. Those figures are starting points, not a complete interpretation.

What an earnings report is designed to answer
A bank’s earnings release combines several businesses that behave differently. Deposits and loans generate interest income, while investment banking, trading, asset management, card fees and other activities generate noninterest income. The bank also records operating expenses and an estimate of expected credit losses. Net income and diluted earnings per share are the final outcomes after those components are combined.
The key question is not simply whether profit rose. It is whether revenue growth was broad or concentrated, whether expenses grew faster than revenue, and whether credit costs are moving in a healthy direction relative to loan growth. A quarter with higher net income can still contain warning signs if the increase came from a temporary credit-loss release or a one-time market gain.

Bank of America’s 2025 annual report describes the mix clearly: revenue, net of interest expense, was $113.1 billion in 2025, with approximately 53% from net interest income and 47% from fees and other noninterest businesses. That balance gives you a useful first lens for deciding whether the company is primarily benefiting from its balance sheet or from market-facing and fee-generating activities.
Step 1: Start with the income statement
Read the income statement from top to bottom before looking at management commentary. Identify each line and ask what economic activity produced it.
- Net interest income: interest earned on loans and other interest-earning assets minus interest paid to depositors and other funding providers.
- Noninterest income: fees and other revenue from businesses that do not appear as interest income, including market-facing activities.
- Total revenue, net of interest expense: the combination of NII and noninterest income after interest expense has been netted in the NII calculation.
- Provision for credit losses: the period’s expense or release for expected losses on loans and certain other exposures.
- Noninterest expense: personnel, technology, occupancy, marketing, professional services and other operating costs.
- Net income: profit remaining after revenue, credit costs, expenses, taxes and other applicable items.
- Diluted earnings per share: net income allocated to each diluted share, incorporating the effect of potentially dilutive securities.
The second-quarter 2026 release places these lines together and provides columns for the first quarter of 2026 and the second quarter of 2025. Read across the columns rather than relying on a single year-over-year percentage. Sequential changes can reveal a turning point sooner, while the year-ago comparison helps account for seasonality and the level of interest rates.

Beginning with EPS can hide the cause of a change. EPS may rise because profit increased, because the share count changed, or because an unusual item affected net income. Beginning with revenue and the provision shows whether the underlying business improved before you evaluate the per-share result.
Step 2: Understand net interest income and net interest margin
NII is the spread a bank earns between the yield on its interest-earning assets and the cost of its funding. Loans are usually the largest earning asset, but securities and other assets also contribute. Deposits are an important funding source, and their cost can rise when customers move money into higher-yielding accounts or when market rates increase.
Do not read NII in isolation. Pair it with the report’s disclosures about average loans, deposits, total earning assets and net interest margin. Average balances tell you whether the bank earned more because it had a larger balance sheet; margin indicates how much spread it earned on those balances.
The four questions to ask about NII
- Did average loans increase? Growth can lift interest income, but it also increases the amount of credit exposure that must be monitored.
- Did deposits increase, and what happened to their cost? Deposit growth is useful only if the funding remains economical. Paying substantially more for deposits can offset the benefit of additional loans.
- Did earning assets change? A shift between loans, securities and cash can change the yield and the sensitivity of NII to interest-rate movements.
- Did net interest margin expand or contract? A wider margin suggests improved spread economics; a narrower margin means balance growth may be doing more of the work.
A rising NII with a falling margin generally indicates that balance growth is compensating for weaker pricing. A rising margin with flat balances points to better spread management. Neither pattern is automatically good or bad; the durability of the change and the accompanying credit risk matter.

How to interpret the 2025 mix
Bank of America reported $113.1 billion of 2025 revenue, net of interest expense. Approximately 53% came from NII and 47% from fees and other noninterest businesses. This is a mix, not a forecast. It tells you that both spread income and fee performance were material to the year’s result, so a complete review should examine both rather than treating the bank as only a lender.
Step 3: Separate noninterest income into its economic drivers
Noninterest income is a broad category. It can include recurring service fees, card-related revenue, investment-management fees, investment-banking fees, trading results and other market-sensitive items. A single total does not tell you whether customers generated more recurring fees or whether markets produced an unusually strong quarter.
Use the business-line and footnote detail in the release or filing to classify changes into three groups:
- Balance- or client-driven income: fees linked to deposits, cards, assets under management or customer activity.
- Transaction-driven income: investment banking and other fees that depend on deal volume and timing.
- Market-driven income: trading and related results that can be volatile from quarter to quarter.
When noninterest income rises, ask whether the increase is broad across businesses or concentrated in one volatile category. A diversified increase is generally easier to carry into the next quarter than a gain tied to a short-lived market condition, although the report alone may not establish how persistent a particular result will be.

Step 4: Treat credit losses as a separate earnings driver
The provision for credit losses is an accounting estimate of expected losses recognized during the period. It is not the same as net charge-offs, which are loans actually written off after recovery efforts, and it is not the same as the allowance for credit losses, which is the reserve balance on the balance sheet.
For a useful credit read, examine all three:
- Provision: the current-period expense or release that affects earnings.
- Net charge-offs: realized losses, net of recoveries, that show what has already gone wrong in the portfolio.
- Allowance for credit losses: the reserve held for expected future losses, including additions, reductions and other activity explained in the accounting notes.
The 10-K directs readers to the allowance accounting notes for definitions and activity. Those notes explain how the reserve changed and which portfolio categories drove the movement.
How to read a higher or lower provision
A higher provision reduces current earnings, but it may reflect prudent reserve building rather than a surge in current-period defaults. Management may increase the allowance when loan balances grow, economic assumptions worsen or portfolio risk changes. Conversely, a lower provision or a release increases earnings, but it does not prove that credit quality has permanently improved.

Compare the provision with net charge-offs, nonperforming loans and allowance coverage. If the provision rises while charge-offs remain low, the bank may be preparing for expected losses rather than recognizing losses already realized. If charge-offs and nonperforming loans rise while the provision falls, investigate the footnotes carefully instead of treating the lower expense as an unqualified positive.
Bank of America reported a $1.4 billion provision for credit losses in the second quarter of 2026. That figure should be read with the quarter’s charge-offs, nonperforming-loan data and allowance activity; the provision alone cannot establish the future path of credit performance.
Step 5: Make the three required comparisons
Sequential: Q2 2026 versus Q1 2026
The sequential comparison is the quickest way to identify a recent change in momentum. Check whether NII, noninterest income, total revenue, the provision, expenses, net income and diluted EPS moved up or down from the first quarter. Then identify the largest dollar change and determine whether it came from operations, markets or credit costs.
A sequential NII increase accompanied by higher average loans and stable deposits has a different interpretation from an increase caused by a temporary margin jump. Likewise, a sequential profit increase caused by a lower provision is different from one caused by stronger recurring revenue.
Year over year: Q2 2026 versus Q2 2025
The year-ago comparison removes much of the quarter-to-quarter noise and provides a consistent interest-rate and economic backdrop for evaluation. Review the same lines, then ask whether the revenue mix changed. A larger share of NII may indicate stronger spread income, while a larger share of noninterest income may indicate stronger fees or market activity.

Do not assume that a year-over-year revenue increase means operating performance improved across the board. Check expense growth and the provision at the same time. If expenses grew faster than revenue, the bank may have weaker operating leverage even when the top line is higher.
Annual: 2025 versus 2024
The annual comparison is useful for distinguishing a sustained trend from a one-quarter fluctuation. Bank of America reported the following figures in its 2025 annual report:

| Metric | 2025 | 2024 | Change calculated from reported figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue, net of interest expense | $113.097 billion | $105.856 billion | +$7.241 billion, approximately +6.8% |
| Provision for credit losses | $5.675 billion | $5.821 billion | -$0.146 billion, approximately -2.5% |
The calculated annual revenue increase was larger than the calculated decline in the provision. That combination suggests the 2025 revenue improvement was not simply the result of a credit-cost change, but it still does not identify which revenue businesses drove growth. Use the NII and noninterest-income disclosures to complete that diagnosis.
Step 6: Compare revenue growth with expense growth
Revenue growth creates value only if a reasonable share reaches the bottom line. Compare total revenue with noninterest expense on both a sequential and year-over-year basis. If revenue grows faster than expenses, operating leverage is positive. If expenses grow faster, the bank is investing or absorbing inflation and may need stronger future revenue to protect margins.
Break expenses into recurring and event-related components where the filing allows. Personnel and technology costs may support future capacity, while legal, restructuring or other unusual costs may not recur. Do not remove an item simply because it is inconvenient; first determine how the company defines it and whether the presentation is GAAP or a non-GAAP measure.
The same discipline applies to adjusted results. If management highlights a non-GAAP figure, reconcile it to the reported figure and read the footnote describing the adjustment. A non-GAAP measure can help explain operating trends, but it should not replace the reported income statement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Put earnings into return context
Absolute profit and EPS do not show how efficiently the bank used its assets and equity. Add return measures such as return on average assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and tangible common equity returns when they are provided.
- ROA relates profit to the asset base and helps compare periods with different balance-sheet sizes.
- ROE relates profit to shareholders’ equity, but can be affected by capital levels and balance-sheet composition.
- Tangible common equity returns focus on common equity after specified intangible adjustments and should be interpreted using the company’s definition.
Read these returns alongside revenue, expenses and credit costs. A higher ROE produced by lower equity rather than stronger operating profit is different from a higher ROE produced by durable revenue growth. The filing’s definitions and reconciliations determine what each measure includes.

- Review average loans, deposits, earning assets and margin disclosures to explain NII.
- Review fee and market-sensitive categories to explain noninterest income.
- Read the credit tables and allowance notes before interpreting the $1.4 billion provision.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling every revenue increase “loan growth”
Total revenue includes NII and noninterest income. A revenue increase can come from fees, investment banking or markets activity even when loan balances are flat. Always split the two major revenue sources.
Equating the provision with actual losses
The provision is an estimate recognized in the period. Charge-offs show realized losses, while the allowance reflects expected losses held on the balance sheet. Use the three measures together.
Assuming one quarter predicts credit performance
Credit outcomes develop over time. A single quarter’s provision, release or charge-off rate can be affected by portfolio mix and economic assumptions. Review several periods and the allowance notes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIgnoring expenses when revenue is strong
Higher revenue does not guarantee higher efficiency. Compare revenue and noninterest expense growth, and distinguish recurring costs from clearly identified unusual items.
Mixing reported and adjusted numbers
Keep GAAP results separate from management’s non-GAAP presentations. Read each reconciliation and carry the definition with the number.
Using stale figures
Bank results and outlooks change each quarter. Use the latest earnings release and filing, then check footnotes for accounting-method changes, retrospective presentation and updated definitions.
A repeatable checklist for future quarters
- Record NII, noninterest income, total revenue, provision, noninterest expense, net income and diluted EPS.
- Mark the sequential, year-over-year and annual comparison periods.
- Explain NII with average loans, deposits, earning assets and margin.
- Classify noninterest income as recurring client fees, transaction-driven or market-driven where disclosures permit.
- Read provision, net charge-offs, nonperforming loans and allowance activity together.
- Compare revenue growth with expense growth.
- Review ROA, ROE and tangible common equity returns using the company’s definitions.
- Check footnotes for accounting changes, non-GAAP reconciliations and retrospective presentation.
- Write the conclusion only after identifying the specific line items that changed.
How to reach a balanced conclusion
A sound reading of Bank of America’s earnings report connects the income statement to the balance sheet and the credit tables. Start with the $31.6 billion of second-quarter 2026 revenue, determine how much came from NII versus noninterest income, test the $1.4 billion provision against realized and expected credit indicators, and then see whether expenses allowed revenue growth to reach net income. Finally, compare the result with the prior quarter, the year-ago quarter and the 2025 annual trend.
This approach avoids two common errors: treating a strong headline EPS number as proof that every business improved, and treating a higher provision as proof that the loan book is already deteriorating. The report is most informative when each figure is interpreted with its stated period, accounting definition and economic driver.
