How to Read ASML’s Earnings Report and Guidance (Using Q2 2026)

Read an ASML earnings report in this order: establish the period and accounting basis, separate reported results from management’s forecast, examine sales and margin, then test demand signals such as net bookings and backlog. For the latest figures covered here, ASML’s Q2 2026 release reported €9.3 billion in total net sales, a 54.0% gross margin and €2.9 billion in net income. It forecast Q3 sales of €11.0–€12.0 billion and a 55%–57% gross margin; those ranges are estimates, not results.

ASML’s full-year 2026 outlook in that July 15, 2026 release was €43–€45 billion of total net sales and a 54%–56% gross margin. The figures below use that Q2 release and the FY2025 financial information. ASML’s archive listed a Q3 2026 announcement for October 14, 2026, so check the company’s latest release before making a decision based on these numbers.

1. Fix the period, date and accounting basis before reading a number

Every figure in an earnings release has a time frame. A quarterly result covers three months; a full-year result covers twelve months. A sequential comparison is quarter over quarter, while a year-on-year comparison is against the same quarter a year earlier. A quarterly sales figure cannot be compared directly with a full-year total without adjusting for the different periods.

Write the publication date beside the numbers you are using. The Q2 2026 release was dated July 15, 2026. Its Q3 sales and margin ranges were forecasts made on that date, while the Q2 sales and margin were completed results. Guidance can change in a later release even when earlier figures remain correct.

ASML prepares its earnings releases and annual reports under US GAAP. Use the formal US GAAP financial statement linked from the company’s quarterly archive when you need a line-item definition, a balance-sheet detail or a reconciliation that is not visible in the headline release.

2. Read the headline results before the outlook

The first pass should answer what ASML actually delivered in the reported quarter. In Q2 2026, the headline figures were:

Metric Q2 2026 reported figure What it tells you
Total net sales €9.3 billion The value of products and services recognized as revenue during the quarter.
Gross margin 54.0% Gross profit as a percentage of sales, before operating expenses such as research and development.
Net income €2.9 billion Profit attributable after operating costs, financing, taxes and other items included in the income statement.

ASML said Q2 sales and gross margin were above its guidance, driven primarily by higher-than-expected Installed Base Management sales. Installed Base Management is ASML’s term for net service and field-option sales. That explanation is management’s attribution of the variance; it is not a guarantee that the same mix will recur.

Systems sold

The headline table also reports systems sold. A system count indicates how many lithography systems were delivered or recognized under the report’s definition, but it does not by itself measure revenue quality. Different system types have very different prices, configurations and margins, and a quarter with fewer high-value systems can produce more sales than a quarter with more lower-value systems.

Gross profit and gross margin

Gross profit is the euro amount left after the direct cost of sales. Gross margin divides that amount by net sales, so it allows a margin comparison when sales levels differ. Check whether a margin change came from product mix, service revenue, pricing, manufacturing costs, customer acceptance timing or other factors discussed by management. Do not infer a permanent margin trend from one quarter.

Net income and basic earnings per share

Net income is the bottom-line amount for the period. Basic earnings per share (EPS) expresses earnings per ordinary share and can move differently from net income when the share count changes. Read the EPS figure together with net income rather than treating it as a separate operating measure.

Cash and short-term investments

The release’s cash and short-term-investments line is a balance-sheet snapshot at the reporting date, not cash generated during the quarter. To understand liquidity, compare it with debt, working-capital movements and cash-flow statements in the formal financial statements.

3. Separate recognized revenue from orders

ASML’s order statistics are useful leading indicators, but they are not revenue. The company defines net bookings as accepted system sales orders plus inflation-related adjustments for which written authorizations were accepted. Backlog is the value of accepted orders that has not yet been recorded in net sales.

Measure FY2025 value How to interpret it
Q4 2025 net bookings €13.2 billion Orders accepted in the fourth quarter; €7.4 billion was EUV.
FY2025 net bookings €28.0 billion The sum of quarterly bookings for 2025, indicating order intake during the year.
Year-end 2025 backlog €38.8 billion Accepted order value not yet recognized as total net sales at year end.

A booking can be scheduled for delivery later, be rescheduled, or be affected by customer capacity plans, supply constraints and acceptance conditions. Backlog therefore provides visibility, not a promise of the timing or final amount of revenue. Compare bookings with shipments and recognized sales over several periods instead of treating a single surge or decline as a guaranteed trend.

4. Examine the revenue mix

For FY2025, ASML reported €32.7 billion of total net sales: €24.5 billion from net system sales and €8.2 billion from net service and field-option sales.

FY2025 category Sales Questions to ask
Net system sales €24.5 billion How many systems were sold, which technology categories contributed, and when were systems accepted?
Net service and field-option sales €8.2 billion How is the installed base growing, how heavily are tools being used, and how many field upgrades were completed?
Total net sales €32.7 billion Does the combined result and its growth agree with the margin and cash-flow picture?

ASML attributed service and field-option growth mainly to the expanding installed base, higher lithography-tool use by certain customers and more NXE field upgrades. Systems and installed-base services can have different timing and margin characteristics, so a change in their proportions can affect quarterly results even if total demand appears stable.

5. Put guidance in a dated sequence

Guidance is a management estimate, not an accounting result. The most useful way to read it is as a dated sequence, noting both the range and the change from the previous outlook.

When guidance was issued 2026 total net sales outlook 2026 gross-margin outlook Meaning
Start of 2026 €34–€39 billion 51%–53% Initial company outlook for the full year.
After Q1 2026 €36–€40 billion 51%–53% Sales range raised; margin range retained.
Q2 release, July 15, 2026 €43–€45 billion 54%–56% Latest full-year outlook covered here; both ranges raised.

The size of the revision matters as much as the endpoint. The July outlook is €4–€9 billion above the initial sales range’s endpoints and carries a higher margin range. It is still a forecast and can change with customer plans, supply, production and shipment timing.

Q3 2026 guidance

For Q3 2026, the Q2 release projected total net sales of €11.0–€12.0 billion and gross margin of 55%–57%. It also indicated research-and-development costs of approximately €1.2 billion and selling, general-and-administrative costs of approximately €0.4 billion. Compare the next reported quarter with these ranges, and identify whether a variance came from sales, margin, operating expenses or a combination.

6. Understand why management said the outlook increased

In the Q2 release, ASML President and Chief Executive Officer Christophe Fouquet said: “Our second-quarter total net sales were €9.3 billion and gross margin came in at 54.0%, both above guidance, driven primarily by higher than expected Installed Base Management sales.”

Management also described a stronger industry outlook, citing ongoing AI-related investment, customers’ more positive medium-term assessments, stronger capacity-expansion plans and very strong first-half order intake. Treat these statements as management’s explanation for the outlook change, not as independently verified causation or a promise of future results.

The release’s forward-looking-statements discussion covers demand, customer plans, order intake, backlog, expected shipments, margins and future financial results. Those estimates can change as customers alter capacity decisions, as supply conditions develop and as shipments are accepted. Read the assumptions and the risk language whenever you rely on a forecast.

7. Compare a quarter on three consistent axes

A disciplined comparison uses the same questions every time:

  1. Year on year: Compare the quarter with the same quarter one year earlier to reduce seasonal distortion.
  2. Sequentially: Compare with the immediately preceding quarter to identify recent movement, while remembering that shipment timing can make sequential changes volatile.
  3. Against the prior guidance: Use the guidance that was in force immediately before the release, not a later range, to judge whether management met its own expectations.

Then apply those comparisons to total sales, gross margin, system-versus-service mix, net bookings, backlog, systems sold, net income and EPS. A result can be above sales guidance but below margin guidance, or vice versa; evaluate each dimension separately.

8. A worked reading of Q2 2026

Start with the completed result: €9.3 billion of sales, 54.0% gross margin and €2.9 billion of net income. ASML said both sales and margin exceeded guidance, primarily because Installed Base Management sales were higher than expected. That tells you what happened and the company’s stated explanation.

Next, move to the forward view. Q3 sales guidance of €11.0–€12.0 billion implies a higher sales level than Q2, while the 55%–57% margin range is above Q2’s 54.0%. Those are management’s planned outcomes, not evidence that Q3 has already occurred.

Finally, place the quarter in the annual sequence. The full-year outlook of €43–€45 billion and 54%–56% was raised from the earlier €36–€40 billion and 51%–53% ranges after Q1, which itself had been raised from €34–€39 billion and 51%–53% at the start of the year. The logical conclusion is that management’s current expectations improved; it is not that the entire range is guaranteed.

9. Use the annual report to test the quarterly story

Quarterly releases are concise. The annual financial page and US GAAP statements let you check whether a quarterly explanation fits the longer record. For FY2025, total net sales were €32.7 billion, gross margin was 52.8% and net income was €9.6 billion. The annual information also separates system sales from service and field-option sales and discusses growth in both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the annual report to inspect recurring items, cash generation, capital expenditure, working capital, share count and commitments. These details can explain why accounting profit, cash and EPS do not move in lockstep.

10. Keep scenarios separate from guidance

ASML’s 2025 annual financials page repeats a 2024 Investor Day scenario of a €44–€60 billion revenue opportunity and a 56%–60% gross-margin opportunity for 2030. This is a long-range scenario, not 2026 guidance. Do not combine it with the €43–€45 billion 2026 outlook or treat it as a forecast for a specific year.

11. Common reading mistakes and their fixes

  • Calling bookings revenue: Bookings are accepted orders; revenue is recognized when the accounting criteria are met. Keep the two lines separate.
  • Using backlog as guaranteed sales: Backlog is unrecognized accepted order value and can change in timing or amount.
  • Mixing periods: Label every figure as quarterly, year-to-date or full year before comparing it.
  • Ignoring the basis of comparison: State whether a change is year on year, sequential or versus guidance.
  • Reading one margin as a structural rate: Check product mix, services, upgrades, costs and acceptance timing.
  • Repeating management’s rationale as fact: Attribute explanations about AI investment, capacity expansion or customer confidence to management.
  • Treating a scenario as guidance: Keep the 2030 Investor Day opportunity separate from the dated 2026 outlook.
  • Judging liquidity from cash alone: Read cash, debt, working capital and cash flow together.

12. A practical checklist for each new release

  1. Record the release date, quarter covered and whether the comparison columns are sequential or year on year.
  2. Confirm that the statements use US GAAP and open the formal financial statement for definitions.
  3. Write down sales, gross margin, gross profit, net income, basic EPS, systems sold and cash.
  4. Mark each number as actual or forecast.
  5. Compare actual sales and margin with the guidance that preceded the release.
  6. Separate system sales from service and field-option sales; identify any mix explanation.
  7. Record net bookings and backlog separately from revenue.
  8. Capture the new quarterly and full-year guidance with its “as of” date.
  9. Read management’s explanation and label it as commentary rather than proof of future demand.
  10. Review the forward-looking-statements section for assumptions about customers, supply, shipments and margins.
  11. Check the annual report or US GAAP statement when a headline number needs context.

13. What the report can and cannot tell a personal-finance investor

An earnings report can show how much ASML recognized, how profitable those sales were, how much demand had been accepted into orders and what management expected at a particular date. It cannot tell you with certainty what the share price will do, whether every backlog euro will become revenue on schedule or whether a guidance range will be achieved.

For a household portfolio, use the report as one dated input in a broader decision. Check your time horizon, diversification, currency exposure, tax position and tolerance for semiconductor-cycle volatility. Avoid turning a favorable quarter, a higher backlog or a raised outlook into an automatic buy or sell instruction.
