None tells the full story alone. Compare growth on a consistent basis, check how bookings may convert, and read GAAP and adjusted margins side by side.
Start with revenue: what the company recognized this quarter
Revenue is the amount recognized for delivered work in the reporting period, not the total value of contracts signed. Begin with the reported year-over-year change, then ask what contributed to it. Exchange rates, acquisitions, business mix, and differences among segments or geographies can all affect the headline.

Constant-currency growth restates current-period revenue using the comparative period’s exchange rates and compares it with comparative-period reported revenue. It helps isolate currency effects, but does not by itself show organic demand or explain changes in business mix. Cognizant defines the measure in its Q2 2026 results release.

For example, Cognizant reported Q2 2026 revenue of $5.481 billion, up 4.5% year over year as reported and 4.1% in constant currency. Its FY2025 release separately said the Belcan acquisition contributed approximately 260 basis points to that year’s revenue growth, illustrating why currency-adjusted growth and acquisition contributions should be considered separately.

Check what is behind the growth rate
- Compare reported growth with constant-currency growth.
- Look for acquisition contributions before describing growth as organic.
- Review segment and geographic mix where the company provides it.
- Use the same period and definition when comparing companies or quarters.
Bookings are signed contract value, not revenue earned
Bookings can indicate sales activity, but they are not revenue and do not guarantee future revenue. Cognizant defines bookings as the total contract value (TCV) of new contracts, including new sales, renewals, and expansions. It calculates book-to-bill as trailing-twelve-month bookings divided by trailing-twelve-month revenue. These are company-defined measures, so check the issuer’s definitions before comparing them.
A book-to-bill ratio above 1 means bookings exceeded revenue over the trailing 12 months under that company’s calculation. It does not mean revenue will rise by the same amount or on a predictable schedule. Conversion depends on contract length and type, client spending and delivered volumes; contracts can also change or end. Cognizant says most of its contracts can be terminated by clients on short notice, often without penalty, and cautions that bookings are not comparable to or a substitute for reported revenue.

Read quarterly and trailing figures together
Bookings may be lumpy: one or two large contracts can materially affect a quarter. Cognizant defines large deals as TCV of at least $100 million and mega deals as at least $500 million. Its Q2 2026 release reported seven large deals, while bookings for the quarter declined 6% year over year. Yet trailing-twelve-month bookings were $29.1 billion, up 5%, with book-to-bill of approximately 1.3x. Those measures cover different periods and should not be treated as contradictory or interchangeable.
The previous quarter provides another example of volatility: Cognizant reported Q1 2026 bookings up 21% year over year, while trailing-twelve-month bookings were $29.6 billion, up 11%, with book-to-bill of approximately 1.4x. Strong bookings can be a forward-looking clue, not a promise about the timing or amount of later sales.

Utilization is useful only when the company defines it
For a people-intensive business, utilization can help indicate how much employee capacity is deployed. But the percentage is meaningful only alongside the company’s definition: issuers may count different employee groups, use different available-time denominators, or exclude different categories of time. Compare the same definition and period over time.
Cognizant’s Q1 and Q2 2026 releases report workforce measures such as headcount and attrition but do not report utilization. Do not infer a utilization rate from headcount, bookings, or margins, or treat an undisclosed figure as zero.

Compare GAAP and adjusted operating margins
Operating margin expresses operating profit as a share of revenue. Read the GAAP figure alongside any adjusted figure, and inspect the reconciliation showing what was excluded. An adjusted measure is not automatically more informative or more favorable: it is non-GAAP, and companies may define it differently. Cognizant says its adjusted operating margin is not a substitute for or superior to GAAP measures and may not be comparable with similarly named measures used by other companies.
In Q2 2026, Cognizant reported a GAAP operating margin of 15.9% and an adjusted operating margin of 16.0%, increases of 30 and 40 basis points year over year, respectively. The two margins are close, but remain distinct measures. In FY2025, the company reported a GAAP margin of 16.1% and an adjusted margin of 15.8%, showing that the adjusted figure need not be higher.

Why revenue can rise while margins fall
Revenue and margin answer different questions. Revenue tracks recognized business volume; margin tracks operating profit per unit of that revenue. Growth can therefore coincide with a lower margin if the mix of work or costs changes. To assess the cause in a particular quarter, inspect the company’s segment results, expense disclosures, and the GAAP-to-adjusted reconciliation rather than assuming that growth automatically improves profitability.
Also check whether an adjustment changes the apparent trend. Cognizant said its Q1 2026 adjusted operating margin excluded unusual items, including a property-sale gain in Q1 2025. A rising adjusted margin beside a flat or falling GAAP margin calls for examining that bridge, not selecting whichever number looks better.

| Measure | Cognizant Q2 2026 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $5.481 billion; up 4.5% reported and 4.1% in constant currency year over year | Recognized activity grew; the two growth rates use different currency bases. |
| Bookings | Q2 bookings down 6% year over year; trailing-twelve-month bookings of $29.1 billion, up 5%; approximately 1.3x book-to-bill | Quarterly bookings and trailing measures describe different windows; neither guarantees conversion to revenue. |
| Utilization | Not stated in the Q2 2026 release | No utilization rate can be concluded from the other reported metrics. |
| Operating margin | 15.9% GAAP; 16.0% adjusted; year-over-year increases of 30 and 40 basis points, respectively | Compare each with its own prior-period basis and review the adjustment reconciliation. |
These figures come from Cognizant’s Q2 2026 results release. They are one company’s reported results, not an industry benchmark. The company also revised its 2026 constant-currency revenue growth guidance to 4.0%–5.5% and adjusted operating margin guidance to 16.0%–16.2% as of July 29, 2026. Guidance is management’s outlook, not an achieved result.

- Establish the revenue trend. Record reported growth and constant-currency growth, then check acquisitions, segments, and geography.
- Assess bookings without treating them as sales already earned. Note the definition, quarterly direction, trailing-twelve-month book-to-bill, and any large-deal concentration.
- Use utilization only if it is disclosed. Record the employee population, denominator, and reporting period so comparisons are valid.
- Check profitability on both bases. Compare GAAP and adjusted operating margins, read the reconciliation, and track each measure consistently.
- Use secondary context carefully. Where available, review guidance changes and cash flow, while keeping outlook distinct from results.
Across companies, a simple ranking can mislead when booking methods, utilization definitions, or adjusted-margin exclusions differ. Same-period, same-definition comparisons are the safer starting point.
