To estimate how much a tech company is committing to AI infrastructure, start with cash capital expenditures in the cash-flow statement, reconcile them to the property-and-equipment disclosures, then widen the view to include infrastructure under construction, leases, management guidance, and evidence of demand or capacity. A reported capex total is not the same as an audited AI-only spending figure: servers, networks, storage, land, and data-center construction are usually grouped together, and companies do not necessarily identify what share serves AI.
What does AI capital spending mean in an earnings report?
AI capital spending is the investment in long-lived infrastructure used to develop or run AI services. It can include computing equipment such as servers, networking and storage systems, as well as the data-center buildings, land, and construction needed to house that equipment.

A server may support AI training, cloud services, search, or several uses over its life. That means a company’s total capital expenditures can be a useful starting point, but it is not automatically a precise measure of AI investment.
Keep three ideas separate as you read:
- Cash capex: cash paid for property and equipment during the reporting period, as shown in investing cash flow and explained in the filing.
- AI-related infrastructure: the portion of spending management associates with AI or technical infrastructure. It may be embedded in broader categories.
- Economic commitment: the wider obligation to build or obtain capacity, which can include leases, debt, construction in progress, or future purchase commitments in addition to current-period cash spending.
These measures answer different questions. Cash capex tells you what cash went out during a period; management’s AI discussion explains intended use; commitments and assets under construction help show what is still ahead.

Where should I look first in the filing?
Begin with the cash-flow statement, then reconcile its capital-expenditure figure to the property-and-equipment note and management discussion. Use the latest annual filing for a full-year baseline and the latest quarterly filing or earnings call for changes in pace and outlook.
Start with investing cash flow
Find the line for purchases of property and equipment, capital expenditures, or a similar label in cash flow from investing activities. Record the reporting period and whether the number covers a quarter, year-to-date period, or full fiscal year. Do not substitute an income-statement expense for this cash figure: capex is an investment in assets, while depreciation is an expense recognized over time.
Also check whether the company presents purchases net of proceeds from asset sales or gives a separate gross-purchases figure. Use the company’s own definition when comparing periods. The goal is to avoid treating different presentations as though they measure exactly the same thing.
Reconcile the total to the property-and-equipment note
In the notes, look for property and equipment, additions, construction in progress, assets not yet placed in service, and cash paid for property and equipment. The note may describe what the spending covers, while the cash-flow statement shows the cash movement. Differences between a cash figure and an asset-additions figure can reflect timing and noncash arrangements, so identify the exact basis rather than forcing the values to match.
Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K reported capital investments mainly for servers and network equipment, data-center land and construction, and office facilities. Its filing also says the company continues to invest in capital expenditures as it scales technical infrastructure, particularly for AI, to meet user and enterprise-customer demand and support internal research. This is useful context for the total, but it does not allocate a specific dollar amount exclusively to AI.
Read management’s discussion for labels and explanations
Search the management discussion and analysis (MD&A), earnings release, and earnings-call transcript for terms such as technical infrastructure, data centers, AI, servers, networking, capacity, and construction. Use those statements to understand what management says is driving investment and how it expects spending to evolve. Treat a statement about strategic purpose as context, not as a substitute for the cash-flow number.
For an auditable working note, capture the figure, period, company-defined label, statement or filing location, and whether the figure is historical or forward-looking. That small discipline prevents a forecast from being mistaken for cash already spent.

How can I tell how much of capex is really for AI?
Usually, you cannot calculate an exact AI-only figure from public filings unless the company explicitly discloses one. Instead, identify the broad infrastructure categories that plausibly support AI, then distinguish disclosed facts from your own estimate.
Alphabet’s 10-Q describes technical infrastructure as including servers and network equipment for computing, storage, and networking, as well as data-center land and building construction. Those categories help define the relevant asset pool. They do not establish that every dollar in the pool is for AI, because the infrastructure can support multiple products and workloads.
Build a transparent scope instead of guessing a percentage
Use a two-column note: one column for what the company actually says, and another for what remains unallocated. For example, a filing may say technical-infrastructure investment is being scaled particularly for AI, while leaving the split between AI, other cloud services, and other uses unstated. Preserve that distinction in any calculation or comparison.
Recommended Free Tools
If management gives a discrete AI-related figure, record its definition and period. Check whether it refers to cash capex, total infrastructure investment, a forecast, or a broader commitment. Do not combine unlike measures under a single label called AI spending.
Use a range only when the disclosed evidence supports one
If the company provides a clearly defined minimum, maximum, or category breakdown, you can report that range with its basis. If it does not, do not invent an allocation from total capex, GPU counts, or an AI revenue estimate. A qualitative conclusion such as “AI is a stated driver of a broader infrastructure program” is more defensible than an unsupported dollar split.
How do construction and depreciation change the picture?
Infrastructure spending and operating capacity do not arrive at the same time. Data-center projects and equipment can remain in assets not yet in service for months or years, and depreciation generally begins when an asset is ready for its intended use.
This timing matters because current cash outlays can precede both usable capacity and the related depreciation expense. Conversely, a company may be bringing previously purchased assets online while current-period spending changes. A one-period comparison of capex and depreciation therefore cannot, by itself, show how much AI capacity is available or whether investment is paying off.

Track assets not yet in service
Look for the balance or discussion of construction in progress and assets not yet placed in service. Alphabet’s filings describe assets not yet in service as primarily technical infrastructure. This gives readers a view of investment that has not yet entered the operating asset base, although it still does not identify a standalone AI amount.
Compare the trend in that balance with current capex and management’s descriptions of deployment. A growing construction balance can indicate that more investment is still in the build-out stage; it is not proof of delay or waste without information about project timing, expected use, or demand.
Watch for the depreciation ramp
Once assets are ready for intended use, depreciation begins and flows through reported expenses over time. Review the filing’s depreciation and amortization discussion alongside capital spending. If a company is deploying a large new asset base, depreciation may rise later than the initial cash spending, affecting future operating income even if capex stabilizes.
Do not interpret higher depreciation alone as evidence that AI infrastructure is unproductive. It is an accounting allocation of asset cost, not a direct measure of utilization, revenue, or return. Pair it with capacity, demand, and financial results where the company provides them.
What do leases, debt, and other commitments add?
Cash capex is not a complete measure of the economic commitment to infrastructure. A company can buy property and equipment, build facilities, or secure capacity through leases and other arrangements; those choices can produce different cash-flow timing and obligations.
Alphabet reports future data-center lease payments and explains that lease arrangements provide capacity alongside purchases of property and equipment. Review lease disclosures, debt, liquidity, and assets under construction before concluding that current-period capex captures the full scale of the build-out.
Read lease disclosures as a separate commitment
Find future lease-payment schedules and the discussion of what the arrangements provide. Record the time horizon and whether the disclosed figure represents contractual payments, recognized lease liabilities, or another measure. Do not simply add a lease total to a capex total without checking for different time periods and accounting bases.

Check funding capacity as well as spending plans
Use the balance sheet and cash-flow statement to examine cash and liquid investments, debt, and operating cash generation. Then read management’s stated outlook for investment and capacity. The relevant question is not only whether the company can announce a large build-out, but whether its financing and operating resources can support the commitment while meeting other obligations.

This is a risk assessment, not a prediction of financial distress. A large commitment may be manageable for one company and more consequential for another depending on liquidity, cash generation, maturity schedule, and the expected time before facilities become productive.
How should I read forward guidance?
Keep guidance separate from historical spending and preserve the period it covers. An earnings-call forecast can describe a future calendar year even when the company reports on a fiscal-year basis, and a forecast may include factors that do not represent additional physical capacity.
On Microsoft’s FY2026 Q3 earnings call, CFO Amy Hood said the company expected to invest roughly $190 billion in capital expenditures in calendar 2026, including approximately $25 billion from higher component pricing. The call also said Microsoft expected to remain constrained through 2026 despite bringing GPU, CPU, and storage capacity online faster. The component-pricing portion is part of the quoted capex outlook; it should not be treated as a separate AI-capacity quantity.
Translate guidance into questions
- What period does the forecast cover: a fiscal year, calendar year, or remaining quarters?
- Is the number capex, a broader infrastructure investment measure, or a commitment that includes leases?
- Does management identify price effects, timing shifts, or specific equipment categories?
- What does management say about capacity availability and constraints?
- Is the forecast a point estimate, a range, or a qualitative direction?
Guidance is useful because it reveals management’s plans and assumptions, but it is not a completed spend figure. Compare it with subsequent filings as periods pass, and note changes in scope before calling a forecast increase or decrease.
How do I compare two companies’ AI spending?
Compare companies on the same reporting basis and across several operating and financial dimensions; a single headline capex number cannot establish which business is investing more effectively. First check whether each company provides a comparable capex definition, period, and level of AI detail.
| Company and source | Reported capex figures | What the figures tell you | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alphabet, 2025 Form 10-K | $52.5 billion in 2024; $91.4 billion in 2025 | Historical annual capital-investment figures; the filing identifies servers, network equipment, data-center land and construction, and office facilities among the main uses. | The disclosure does not provide a standalone AI-only allocation for these totals. |
| Tesla, 2025 annual report | $11.34 billion in 2024; $8.53 billion in 2025 | Historical annual capex; the report says spending was mainly for global AI and operational infrastructure and factory expansion. | The combined description does not isolate an AI-only amount, and the scope differs from Alphabet’s stated investment categories. |
| Microsoft, FY2026 Q3 earnings call | Roughly $190 billion expected in calendar 2026, including approximately $25 billion from higher component pricing | Forward-looking capex guidance and management’s view of capacity constraints. | This is a forecast, not historical spending; its period and pricing component need to remain attached to the figure. |
These examples illustrate why rank-ordering companies by capex alone can mislead. Alphabet’s annual reported totals, Tesla’s stated mix, and Microsoft’s calendar-2026 forecast are not interchangeable measures. Use the table to identify what is disclosed, then compare only like periods and definitions.

Use a consistent comparison checklist
- Capex growth: compare annual with annual or quarter with the same quarter in the prior year, using the company’s stated definition.
- Infrastructure mix: note which assets management names and whether it gives an AI-specific allocation.
- Deployment timing: examine construction in progress, assets not yet in service, and when depreciation begins.
- Lease exposure: include disclosed future obligations as a separate view of capacity commitments.
- Demand and capacity: compare management’s statements about customer demand, utilization or constraints with the pace of investment.
- Liquidity: consider cash, debt, and operating cash generation in relation to the investment plan.
Calculate growth without confusing it with AI share
For a simple year-over-year capex growth rate, use (current-period capex − prior-period capex) ÷ prior-period capex × 100, provided both numbers use the same definition and cover comparable periods. The result measures the change in the company’s reported capex, not the change in AI-only spending unless the company separately defines and reports that measure.
For a comparison, preserve the raw dollar figures as well as the growth rate. A higher percentage increase from a smaller base does not necessarily mean a larger absolute build-out, and neither figure alone says how much productive capacity has been deployed.
What are the common mistakes when reading AI capex?
The most common errors come from treating an imperfect proxy as a precise disclosure. Use these checks before drawing a conclusion:
- Calling all technical-infrastructure capex AI spend: infrastructure may serve multiple workloads. Attribute only the portion the company explicitly identifies.
- Mixing forecasts with actuals: label guidance as forward-looking and retain its stated calendar or fiscal period.
- Comparing cash paid with asset additions as if identical: establish whether each figure is a cash flow, balance-sheet addition, or broader commitment.
- Ignoring construction timing: a facility under construction may not yet be usable, while depreciation may not begin until it is ready for intended use.
- Adding leases to capex without reconciliation: lease payments and cash purchases can cover different periods and accounting measures.
- Equating higher spending with better returns: assess demand, capacity constraints, deployment, pricing, and liquidity rather than assuming spend itself proves success.
- Using a single period to infer a trend: compare consistent periods and read management’s explanation of major shifts or timing effects.
What should I write down after reading the report?
A compact worksheet makes the analysis reproducible and prevents an AI-spending estimate from outrunning the filing. For each company, capture:
- Historical capex: amount, period, filing label, and whether it is gross or net of proceeds where disclosed.
- Asset scope: the exact infrastructure categories named, plus any categories that remain bundled or unallocated.
- AI attribution: management’s wording and whether it gives a dollar amount, a share, or only strategic context.
- Deployment status: assets under construction or not yet in service, project timing, and depreciation treatment.
- Additional obligations: future lease payments and relevant financing or liquidity context.
- Forward view: guidance amount, period, assumptions or price effects, and management’s capacity commentary.
- Comparison basis: which companies and periods are genuinely comparable, and which differences prevent a direct ranking.
The result should make uncertainty visible. A strong conclusion can say that a company is increasing broad infrastructure investment and identifies AI as a driver, while also stating that its public filing does not disclose an AI-only capex total.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AI capex included in free cash flow?
Often, capital expenditures are deducted when a company presents a free-cash-flow measure, but companies may define that measure differently. Check the earnings release’s stated formula before comparing free cash flow across companies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can a company’s AI capex be found on its income statement?
Usually not as a direct spending line: purchases of long-lived equipment are generally reflected as investing cash flows and as assets, with depreciation recognized as expense over time. An income-statement expense figure therefore should not be treated as the period’s cash capex.
Does higher AI spending mean a company will earn more from AI?
No. Spending is an input, not evidence by itself of utilization, customer willingness to pay, or a return on the investment. Look for disclosures that connect capacity additions with demand and operating results, while recognizing that companies may not provide a complete AI-specific return measure.
Why might a company’s capex forecast change after an earnings call?
A forecast can change as equipment prices, project schedules, capacity needs, or management plans change. Compare updated guidance with the earlier forecast only after confirming that both cover the same period and use the same spending definition.
