To reactivate it, ask the account-holding bank for activation and KYC updation. Under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules in force in 2026, you can submit that request at any branch, including a non-home branch. If the bank offers it, you may use video-based customer identification (V-CIP); the bank may also use an authorised Business Correspondent (BC). You must still complete the bank’s identity, customer-due-diligence and risk checks. RBI’s consumer guidance says activation should be completed within three working days after the required checks and that no activation fee may be charged.
What “dormant” means under RBI rules
RBI uses the term inoperative account. A savings or current account reaches that status when there has been no customer-induced transaction for more than two years. A customer-induced transaction is an action by you (or an authorised person) that operates the account, such as a deposit, withdrawal, transfer or other transaction recognised by the bank.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Bank-generated entries do not normally restart the two-year clock. Service charges and periodic interest credited by the bank alone are not customer-induced activity. RBI’s Financial Awareness Messages (FAME) guidance does, however, treat a mandated credit such as fixed-deposit interest or a share dividend as customer-induced activity. Ask the bank to explain the transaction history it used if you believe the status was applied incorrectly.

Examples that can matter
A cash deposit, cheque presented by you, ATM withdrawal, card purchase, internet-banking transfer, standing instruction initiated by you, or other transaction that the bank records as customer-induced can generally demonstrate activity. By contrast, a bank’s debit of service charges or its routine credit of savings interest does not, by itself, reset the period. Because banks classify entries differently, ask for the exact last qualifying transaction rather than relying on a statement line that merely shows money moving.

Inoperative status is not the same as every account freeze
An account can be restricted for another reason, including incomplete periodic KYC, a mismatch in personal details, a legal or regulatory hold, or an internal risk review. RBI’s December 2024 supervisory communication recorded customer difficulties where accounts were frozen while KYC remained pending. Before you submit documents, ask the bank to state the exact status: inoperative because of inactivity, restricted for pending KYC, or blocked for another reason. The remedy and documents can differ.
How to reactivate the account: the exact process
- Confirm the status and account number. Contact the bank through an official branch or service channel and ask whether the account is marked inoperative under the two-year rule. Request the date of the last customer-induced transaction and ask whether any separate restriction is present.
- Request activation and KYC updation together. Tell the bank you want to reactivate the inoperative account and update KYC. RBI’s June 12, 2025 amendment requires banks to make this facility available at all branches, including non-home branches.
- Choose an available submission channel. You may use an in-person branch, a bank-offered V-CIP process, or an authorised BC where the bank has arranged that service. V-CIP and BC availability is bank-specific; neither is guaranteed for every customer or account.
- Confirm the current document and form checklist. RBI establishes the KYC obligation, not one universal document list for every bank and customer. Ask the bank exactly which identity, address, photograph, tax-status, declaration or account forms it requires in your situation. If your name, address, mobile number or other details changed, say so before the bank begins verification.
- Complete customer due diligence. The bank must verify your identity and apply its KYC and risk-categorisation procedures before making the account operative. A discrepancy can stop activation until the underlying record is corrected.
- Obtain proof that the request is complete. Ask for a service-request or acknowledgement number and the date on which the bank accepted a complete KYC submission. Keep copies of forms and the acknowledgement.
- Check the account after the decision. Once the bank confirms activation, sign in or ask the branch to verify that the account can receive and send transactions. Do not assume that a submitted form means the restriction has already been removed.
How to count the three working days
RBI’s three-working-day guidance is best understood as running after the bank has received a complete request and can perform its required checks. A visit that ends with a missing signature, unreadable copy, unresolved name mismatch or incomplete declaration may not be the start date. Ask the bank to confirm in writing when it considers the submission complete. Weekends and bank holidays are not normally counted as working days, so record the acceptance date and the next three banking days.
Where you can submit the request
The 2025 RBI amendment changed the access point: the activation-and-KYC facility must be available at all branches, not only the branch where you opened the account. This is especially useful if you moved to another city.
Recommended Free Tools
| Channel | Travel required | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Any branch, including a non-home branch | Usually a visit to a branch | The bank must make the facility available, but the branch may still require its prescribed forms and verification. |
| V-CIP (video customer identification) | Can avoid a branch visit | Ask whether your bank offers it for inoperative-account activation. The bank must complete the same applicable KYC and due-diligence checks. |
| Authorised Business Correspondent | May avoid travel where the bank supports it | The 2025 amendment permits a bank to use an authorised BC. This is an optional bank channel, not a universal entitlement to an at-home visit. |
Use only contact details published by your bank. Do not hand identity documents or account credentials to an unauthorised intermediary claiming it can “unlock” the account. A legitimate bank representative should not ask for your one-time password, card PIN or internet-banking password to process KYC.
Which documents are needed?
There is no RBI checklist that applies identically to every account, customer and bank. The correct list depends on the bank’s current KYC process and what has changed in your record. Before travelling, ask the bank for its written or recorded checklist and whether originals, self-attested copies, a photograph, a declaration or a particular activation form is required.
Prepare for common verification issues
- Name mismatch: If the name on the account differs from your current identity record, ask the bank how it wants the mismatch corrected before activation.
- Address or mobile-number change: Tell the bank about changes at the start of the request; an outdated contact detail can create an additional verification step.
- Old or incomplete records: The bank may ask for updated KYC evidence even if you supplied documents when the account was opened.
- Joint or authorised-operation accounts: Ask whether every required holder or authorised signatory must complete verification. The bank’s mandate controls this.
- Tax or residency change: Tell the bank if your tax status, country of residence or correspondence address has changed, because the account record may need additional declarations.
Do not rely on a generic internet list as proof that a particular document will be accepted. The bank’s current instruction for your account is controlling. If the branch rejects a document, ask it to record the reason and identify the alternative evidence it will accept.
How long activation takes and what it costs
RBI’s FAME consumer guide states that activation should take three working days after the required KYC and customer-due-diligence process. Count from the date the bank accepts a complete request, not from an attempted submission missing a required document.

RBI also states: “There are no charges for activation of inoperative account.” A bank should not impose an activation fee. Other legitimate account charges, if any, are a separate question and should be identified by the bank rather than labelled as an activation charge.
If the bank misses the three-working-day period
- Use your service-reference number to ask the branch or customer-service team what check remains outstanding.
- Ask the bank to record the delay as a complaint or service request and provide the acknowledgement.
- If the bank demands an activation fee or does not resolve the delay, escalate through that bank’s published grievance channel. Keep the request, acknowledgement, correspondence and any fee demand.
The three-working-day statement is an RBI consumer standard alongside the required checks; it does not remove the bank’s duty to verify identity or resolve a genuine mismatch.
What happens to interest while the account is inoperative?
Savings-account interest continues to accrue even when the account is inoperative. Inoperative status does not by itself stop the bank from crediting savings interest.
A separate rule applies to an unpaid matured fixed deposit. RBI’s FAME guide says the unclaimed balance earns the savings-account rate or the contracted matured-fixed-deposit rate, whichever is lower. Ask the bank to identify which rate it applied and the period covered if you are reconciling the balance.
Two years versus ten years: do not confuse the thresholds
The two-year period determines when a savings or current account becomes inoperative. It does not mean the money has been transferred to RBI.
A separate ten-year threshold applies to deposits and accounts that remain unoperated or unclaimed for ten years or more. The bank must transfer those amounts to the RBI’s Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund. The transfer does not erase the depositor’s claim, but the claim is made through the bank.
How to use UDGAM for a long-unclaimed deposit
- Register on RBI’s UDGAM portal and search for the deposit using the requested identifying details.
- If the search finds a record, note the participating bank and the claim or settlement instructions shown by the portal.
- Submit the claim to that bank using its current process and documents. UDGAM is a search facility; it does not itself release money.
- Follow up with the bank until it confirms the claim decision and payment or account-credit method.
RBI’s UDGAM FAQ reported that 30 banks covering about 90% of DEA-Fund deposits by value were participating as of March 4, 2024. That was a historical participation snapshot, not a guarantee of the portal’s current coverage. Check the portal’s current participating-bank information when you search.

Government-benefit and other special situations
Direct-benefit-transfer and scholarship accounts
RBI instructed banks to segregate accounts used for government schemes so direct benefit transfer (DBT) and electronic benefit transfer (EBT) inflows can continue despite inoperative status. This does not guarantee that every payment will bypass every restriction: an account separately frozen for pending KYC or another reason may still require resolution. If a benefit is missing, ask the bank whether the account is inoperative, separately frozen, or incorrectly excluded from the DBT/EBT arrangement.

When the bank says the account is “closed”
Ask whether the account is merely inoperative, formally closed, transferred to another product, or associated with an unclaimed deposit. The reactivation process applies to an inoperative account; a formally closed account may require a different claim or account-opening procedure.
When your details do not match
RBI has specifically noted difficulties caused by errors such as name mismatches. Request correction of the underlying customer record and ask for written confirmation of which discrepancy prevents activation. Submitting the same unchanged document repeatedly will not solve a mismatch that the bank has not identified and corrected.
Joint accounts, nominees and deceased account holders
For a joint account, the operating instruction and the bank’s mandate determine who must complete KYC. If the account holder has died, a nominee or legal heir should tell the bank that the request is a death-claim matter rather than ordinary reactivation. The bank may require its claim forms and succession or nominee evidence. Do not try to reactivate a deceased person’s account using that person’s credentials.
A practical checklist before you contact the bank
- Account number, customer ID and the bank’s current contact details.
- Confirmation of whether the restriction is inactivity, pending KYC or another hold.
- The bank’s current, account-specific KYC and activation checklist.
- Details of any changed name, address, mobile number, tax status or authorised signatory.
- A request for activation at any branch, and a question about V-CIP or an authorised BC.
- A service-reference number and the date a complete request was accepted.
- A reminder that RBI guidance says activation is free and should take three working days after required checks.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for a small bank credit to reactivate the account: bank interest or service entries alone do not generally count as customer-induced activity.
- Going only to the home branch: the RBI facility is available at non-home branches too.
- Assuming every bank offers video or doorstep service: V-CIP is something banks should endeavour to offer, while BC use depends on the bank’s arrangement.
- Using a generic document list: requirements vary with the bank, customer record and changes in personal details.
- Assuming UDGAM pays the claim: the bank named in the search handles verification and settlement.
- Treating a ten-year transfer as loss of ownership: the claim route remains through the bank, even after transfer to the DEA Fund.
- Sharing security credentials: no genuine reactivation process requires you to disclose an OTP, PIN or password to an intermediary.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reactivate a dormant account from a non-home branch?
Yes. RBI’s June 2025 amendment requires the bank to provide KYC updation for activation at all branches, including non-home branches. The branch still applies the bank’s verification process.
Can a small deposit reactivate my account automatically?
Do not assume so. Bank-generated interest and service entries generally do not qualify as customer-induced activity. Ask the bank to confirm what transaction will be recognised and complete the formal activation and KYC process.
Is there a fee for reactivation?
No activation fee should be charged. RBI’s consumer guidance expressly says activation of an inoperative account is free. Ask the bank to separate any unrelated account charge from an activation charge.

What if my name on the account is different from my identity document?
Tell the bank before submitting the request and ask how it will correct the customer record. A name mismatch may require a separate update and can delay activation until resolved.
Does V-CIP guarantee that I can reactivate remotely?
No. Banks should endeavour to offer V-CIP, but availability and eligibility are bank-specific. Even through video, the bank must complete applicable identification, due-diligence and risk checks.
Can a Business Correspondent visit my home?
The 2025 amendment allows a bank to use an authorised BC, but it does not give every customer an automatic right to a doorstep visit. Confirm whether your bank has arranged that service and use only an authorised representative.
What if the account is restricted because of pending KYC rather than inactivity?
Ask the bank to state the restriction precisely. You may still need KYC updation, but another hold or review could require additional action. The three-working-day guidance applies alongside, not instead of, the bank’s required checks.
What happens after ten years without operation?
The bank transfers the unoperated or unclaimed amount to the RBI’s DEA Fund. You retain a claim route through the bank. Search UDGAM to identify a participating bank, then submit the claim to that bank; RBI and UDGAM do not directly pay you.
Will savings interest stop while the account is inoperative?
No. RBI’s consumer guidance says savings-account interest continues regardless of operative status. For an unpaid matured fixed deposit, the savings rate or contracted matured-FD rate applies, whichever is lower.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reactivate a dormant account from a non-home branch?
Yes. RBI requires banks to provide KYC updation for activation at all branches, including non-home branches, subject to the bank’s verification process.
What documents are required?
There is no single checklist for every bank and customer. Ask the account-holding bank for its current, account-specific identity, address, declaration and activation-form requirements.
How long does reactivation take?
RBI’s consumer guidance says activation should be completed within three working days after the bank accepts a complete request and finishes the required KYC and due-diligence checks.
Is a reactivation fee legal?
RBI says there are no charges for activation of an inoperative account. Ask the bank to identify separately any unrelated account charge.
Can I use V-CIP or a Business Correspondent?
Ask whether your bank supports either channel. V-CIP is an option banks should endeavour to offer, while use of an authorised BC depends on the bank’s arrangement; both still require KYC checks.
What if the account has been unclaimed for ten years?
Search the account on RBI’s UDGAM portal if the bank participates, then submit the claim to the named bank. UDGAM is a search tool and does not itself release funds.
The Bottom Line
Confirm the account’s exact restriction, submit activation and KYC through any branch or an available remote channel, complete all verification, and track the request against RBI’s three-working-day, no-fee guidance. For deposits unclaimed for ten years or more, use UDGAM to locate the record but claim through the bank.
