The fastest way to limit credit-card fraud is to contact your card issuer through a known official channel as soon as you notice a suspicious transaction or a missing card. Lock the card in the issuer’s app if that option exists, report the transaction as unauthorized, follow the issuer’s dispute instructions in writing, and keep monitoring the account. Strong passwords, multifactor authentication (MFA), alerts, and careful handling of account details reduce exposure, but no routine can guarantee that card data will never be stolen.
This guide explains what to do immediately, how federal credit-card liability rules work, why debit cards are different, when a credit freeze or fraud alert makes sense, and why paid “loss-protection” insurance is usually unnecessary.

What to do when you see a charge you do not recognize
Do not wait to see whether an unfamiliar charge disappears. Fraudulent transactions can show up months after card information was stolen, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). A small authorization can also be a test before larger charges appear.
- Open the account through a known channel. Use the issuer’s official app or type the issuer’s website address yourself. If you call, use the number printed on the card or on a statement, not a number in an unexpected text, email, or social-media message.
- Temporarily lock the card if available. A lock can stop new transactions while you investigate, but it does not replace reporting the card or disputing a posted charge. Ask the issuer whether the card should be permanently canceled and replaced.
- Identify the exact transaction. Record the merchant name as displayed, amount, date, and whether it is pending or posted. Some legitimate merchants bill under a parent company or use a delayed posting date, so check receipts, subscriptions, household purchases, and authorized-user activity without assuming the charge is legitimate.
- Report it as unauthorized. Tell the issuer you did not authorize the transaction and ask what information it needs. If someone you previously authorized used the card, explain that relationship accurately; an unauthorized use claim is not automatically the same as a dispute with an authorized user.
- Keep a written record. Note the date and time of every call, the representative’s name or identification number, case or reference numbers, and promised follow-up. Save screenshots and emails.
- Send written follow-up as directed. The issuer may require a billing-error notice at a particular address or through a specified online channel. Follow the instructions and retain a copy; the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this as part of the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) dispute process.
- Review everything after the report. Watch for additional transactions, replacement-card delivery, digital-wallet tokens, recurring subscriptions, and changes to account credentials. Follow the issuer’s instructions for updating legitimate recurring payments and adding the replacement card to a wallet.
If the charge is still pending, report it anyway and ask whether the issuer wants you to wait for posting before filing a formal dispute. Do not make a payment decision based solely on a pending amount; ask how the disputed balance will be handled while the investigation is open.

How much are you responsible for on a credit card?
Federal rules distinguish between a missing physical card, use of the card before you report the loss, and theft of the account number alone. The CFPB’s consumer guidance, last reviewed April 15, 2024, states: “If you report a lost or stolen credit card before it’s used, you can’t be held responsible for any unauthorized charges.” Your card agreement may provide even broader zero-liability protection, so read its terms.
| Situation | General federal credit-card rule | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You report a lost or stolen physical card before anyone uses it | No liability for unauthorized charges under the CFPB guidance. | Report immediately through the issuer’s official app or contact details and ask for cancellation and replacement. |
| Someone uses the card before you report it | Federal law generally caps liability at $50 in the specified circumstances. This is a maximum, not a bill every cardholder will receive; many issuers offer stronger protection. | Report the loss as soon as you discover it and check the card agreement for the issuer’s terms. |
| Only the account number is stolen; the physical card remains with you | You generally are not liable for unauthorized use of the number. | Contact the issuer, identify the transactions, and ask whether the account number and card must be replaced. |
These rules concern unauthorized use. They do not automatically resolve a disagreement with a merchant about a purchase you or an authorized user made. Explain the facts precisely so the issuer can route the matter as fraud, a billing error, a return dispute, or another category.
Credit cards and debit cards are not interchangeable
Do not copy a credit-card liability answer onto a debit-card incident. The FTC’s lost or stolen card guidance treats credit, ATM, and debit cards separately because the liability and reporting deadlines can differ depending on when the loss or unauthorized activity is reported.

| Question | Credit card | Debit card |
|---|---|---|
| Where to report | Contact the credit-card issuer through a known official channel. | Contact the bank or debit-card issuer immediately using its official channel. |
| What determines liability | The circumstances above, including whether the physical card was reported before use and whether only the account number was taken. | Timing matters under different rules; do not assume the credit-card $50 maximum applies. |
| What to preserve | Transaction details, dispute correspondence, case numbers, and card-replacement instructions. | The same records, plus the exact time you notified the bank because reporting deadlines can affect protection. |
Because debit transactions draw directly from a deposit account, a delay can affect access to your own funds even while the bank investigates. Tell the bank whether the card, PIN, online-banking credentials, or only a transaction detail was exposed, and ask what additional account-security steps it recommends.
Use the FCBA dispute process for an unauthorized credit-card charge
An unauthorized transaction can be both a billing error and a warning that personal information was compromised. The FTC explains the FCBA process in its credit-card dispute guidance. The practical sequence is:
- Notify the issuer promptly. Start with the telephone or in-app report so the issuer can block further use quickly.
- Use the issuer’s required written channel. Send the billing-error notice to the address or electronic channel the issuer specifies for disputes, which may differ from the address used for payments.
- Describe the transaction clearly. Include the account identifier requested by the issuer, merchant, amount, date, and a statement that you did not authorize the charge. Keep copies of attachments.
- Continue following instructions. The issuer may request a fraud affidavit, a police report, identity documents, or other information. Provide only what the issuer requests through a verified channel.
- Track the outcome. Keep the investigation result and any adjustment to your balance. If another unauthorized charge appears, report it separately rather than assuming it was included automatically.
Do not put sensitive card details in a reply to an unexpected email or give a caller a one-time authentication code. If a person claiming to represent the issuer pressures you to “verify” a full number, password, or code, end the contact and call the issuer yourself.

Protect the account before a fraud attempt
Secure online access
- Use a strong, unique password for the issuer account. Do not reuse that password on email, shopping, or social accounts; a compromise elsewhere can expose the card account.
- Turn on MFA wherever the issuer offers it. The FTC specifically recommends MFA because a password alone is easier to misuse.
- Keep the issuer’s mobile app and your phone’s operating system updated. Use a device lock and review which devices or sessions are signed in.
- Store recovery information securely. An attacker who controls the email address or phone number used for account recovery may be able to bypass otherwise good password practices.
Make suspicious activity visible
- Enable transaction alerts for purchases, online transactions, cash advances, balance changes, and card-not-present activity when the issuer supports those categories.
- Review posted and pending transactions on a regular schedule. Alerts are useful for speed, but they are not a substitute for checking statements because an alert can be missed, delayed, or filtered.
- Pay attention to tiny or unfamiliar charges. A fraudster may test whether a card works before attempting a larger purchase, and a delayed charge can appear long after the original exposure.
Control what you disclose
- Never provide a full card number, security code, password, or MFA code to an unsolicited caller, texter, emailer, or social-media account.
- If a business contacts you unexpectedly, independently open the company’s app or use a telephone number printed on a statement. Do not use links or callback numbers supplied in the unexpected message.
- Ask why a merchant needs particular information and whether a less sensitive payment method is available. Avoid storing card details in accounts you no longer use.
If the physical card is lost or stolen
Act even if no fraudulent charge is visible. The CFPB says prompt reporting before use prevents liability for unauthorized charges under the cited federal rule. Use this sequence:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the issuer’s official app and lock the card if possible.
- Call the number printed on the card or statement, or use the issuer’s verified in-app support.
- State that the card is missing or stolen and ask whether the account number, expiration date, and security code will change with replacement.
- Ask about digital-wallet tokens and recurring merchants. A replacement card may require legitimate subscriptions and wallets to be updated, while some issuers automatically refresh credentials for participating merchants.
- Change the issuer-account password if you suspect the card was taken with paperwork, a phone, or another device that could expose login details.
- Record the report time and reference number, then monitor for transactions during delivery of the replacement.
Do not leave a locked card in place indefinitely without contacting the issuer. A lock may stop some new purchases but does not report the loss, replace the card, or address an account number already exposed.
When a credit freeze or fraud alert is appropriate
Replacing a card addresses access to that card account. A credit freeze or fraud alert addresses a different risk: someone opening new credit in your name. Neither option reverses an unauthorized charge on an existing card, so issuer reporting and billing disputes still come first.

| Action | Primary purpose | Cost and friction | Scope and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security freeze | Restricts most prospective creditors from accessing your credit file, making new-account fraud harder. | The CFPB says freezes are free. You place one separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion and may need to lift it when applying for credit. | Does not stop transactions on an existing card, erase a debt, or prevent every kind of identity misuse. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity before opening credit. | The CFPB says an initial alert can last up to one year. It is less restrictive than a freeze but may add verification when you apply. | Does not block access to the credit file or settle existing unauthorized charges. |
| Paid credit lock or monitoring service | May provide convenience or notifications, depending on the provider. | Some products charge a fee. The CFPB says paid locks are no more effective than the free security freezes consumers have a legal right to request. | Monitoring can alert you to some activity but does not replace a freeze, issuer reporting, or a dispute. |
If card details were exposed but there is no sign that your name, Social Security number, or other identity data was compromised, start with issuer reporting and account monitoring. If there are unfamiliar accounts, collection notices, tax or employment records you did not create, or a broader data exposure, review your credit reports and consider a freeze or fraud alert. Place a freeze individually with all three nationwide credit-reporting companies; one request does not automatically cover the others.

A fraudulent card charge can be an isolated card-number theft, but it can also be an early clue to wider identity theft. Escalate your response if you find:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Credit inquiries or accounts you do not recognize.
- Debt-collection letters, bills, or account notices for products you never opened.
- Password-reset messages, changed contact details, or new-authorized-user notices you did not request.
- Multiple financial institutions reporting suspicious activity after the same exposure.
In that situation, preserve the evidence, contact each affected institution through a verified channel, review your credit reports, and consider an identity-theft report and recovery steps. A freeze or fraud alert can reduce the risk of new credit being opened; it cannot investigate the existing card transaction for you.

Do not buy credit-card “loss protection” from a scare pitch
Unexpected calls may claim that you must buy insurance or a protection package to avoid liability. The FTC’s guidance is direct: “Don’t buy the pitch – and don’t buy the ‘loss protection’ insurance.” Federal law already limits unauthorized credit-card liability, and issuers commonly provide protections described in their card agreements. Instead of paying a caller, end the conversation and contact the issuer using the number on your card or statement.
Be especially wary when the caller demands immediate payment, asks for an MFA code, or says your account will be closed unless you act through a supplied link. A real issuer can be reached through its normal official channels, and you can ask for the representative’s instructions in writing.
Common mistakes that make fraud harder to contain
- Waiting for a second charge. Report the first suspicious transaction and ask whether the account should be replaced.
- Using a search-result phone number. Search listings and sponsored results can be manipulated. Use the number printed on the card or a known app.
- Assuming a pending charge is harmless. Tell the issuer what you see and ask how it wants pending transactions handled.
- Ignoring authorized users. Check whether a household member or employee made the purchase before declaring it fraud, then describe the facts accurately to the issuer.
- Confusing a credit freeze with a card lock. A card lock concerns new activity on one card; a freeze concerns access to your credit file for prospective creditors.
- Assuming replacement ends the risk. Continue reviewing statements and alerts because a merchant account, email account, or another card may also have been exposed.
- Sending sensitive information by reply email. Use the issuer’s secure app, website, or a verified telephone number instead.
A practical decision guide
| If this happened | First action | Additional action to consider |
|---|---|---|
| You see one unfamiliar credit-card transaction | Contact the issuer, report it as unauthorized, and follow the FCBA dispute process. | Replace the card if the issuer recommends it and monitor subsequent activity. |
| Your physical credit card is missing | Lock it in the app if available, then report the loss immediately and request replacement. | Change credentials if other devices or documents were lost with it. |
| Your card number was exposed in a breach | Ask the issuer whether to replace the card or account number and turn on alerts. | Consider a freeze or fraud alert only if there is a realistic risk of new-account identity theft. |
| You find unfamiliar credit accounts or inquiries | Contact the affected creditors and review all three credit reports. | Place freezes individually with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion and pursue identity-theft recovery steps. |
| A caller sells “loss protection” | End the call and do not provide payment, passwords, or codes. | Contact the issuer independently if you are concerned about the account. |
What effective protection looks like over time
Fraud prevention is a routine, not a one-time purchase. Keep issuer access protected with a unique password and MFA, enable alerts, review activity, and treat every unexpected request for account information as untrusted until you verify it independently. If fraud occurs, speed and documentation matter more than buying a product: report to the issuer, use the required dispute channel, preserve records, and choose a freeze or fraud alert only when the facts indicate a risk of new credit being opened in your name.
