An IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a free, six-digit number that the Internal Revenue Service uses to confirm that you are the person filing an individual federal income tax return. It helps prevent someone who has your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from submitting a fraudulent return in your name. The IRS generates a new PIN every year.

Request one through your IRS Online Account whenever possible. If you cannot complete online identity verification, the IRS provides a Form 15227 route for eligible taxpayers and an in-person Taxpayer Assistance Center option. Once the IRS assigns a PIN, use the number for applicable federal returns filed during that calendar year, keep it private, and retrieve it through your IRS account if you lose it.

What an IRS Identity Protection PIN does

The IP PIN is a filing credential, not a paid identity-monitoring product. It is issued by the IRS at no charge and contains six digits. The number ties your verified identity to the filing of an applicable individual federal return. A return submitted with your SSN or ITIN but without the required PIN, or with an incorrect PIN, may be stopped or rejected by the IRS.

The protection is specific: an IP PIN authenticates a tax return. It is not a general identity document, a password for every IRS service, or proof of identity when you call or visit an IRS office. It also does not guarantee that every kind of identity theft will be prevented. The IRS has not published a national statistic establishing how many fraudulent returns an IP PIN prevents.

Who can enroll

IRS guidance says anyone with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity may enroll. The IRS may automatically enroll people it identifies as victims of tax-related identity theft. You do not have to wait for an identity-theft incident to request a PIN if you can complete the required verification.

Annual renewal is built in

A new IP PIN is generated each year. Do not carry last year’s number forward. The PIN for the current calendar year is the one used on applicable returns filed during that calendar year, even when the return reports an earlier tax year.

Choose the enrollment route that fits your situation

Route Who it serves Enrollment and retrieval Important qualification
IRS Online Account Taxpayers who can create or access an account and pass online identity verification Enroll from the Profile area; retrieve the current PIN online Fastest route. You can select continuous enrollment or one-time enrollment.
Form 15227 Taxpayers unable to access or validate an online account Submit through the IRS guided process and complete IRS verification Current IRS guidance states an adjusted gross income limit of $84,000 for an individual or $168,000 for married filing jointly. These thresholds and procedures can change.
Taxpayer Assistance Center Taxpayers who cannot use the online or Form 15227 routes, or who have unresolved verification problems Schedule an appointment and bring identity-verification documents Appointments are required; the IRS decides what documents are sufficient.

Enrollment can be continuous, meaning it remains active in future years, or one-time, meaning it ends after the current calendar year. The choice affects whether you need to enroll again, not whether the annual PIN changes: a different six-digit number is generated each year either way.

How to request an IP PIN online

The online route is generally the quickest because the IRS can display the PIN in your account after you pass identity verification.

  1. Open or sign in to your IRS Online Account. Use the account you have already established, or follow the IRS account-creation process if you do not have one.
  2. Open the Profile area. Look for the Identity Protection PIN enrollment option.
  3. Complete identity verification. The IRS must confirm that you are the taxpayer connected to the SSN or ITIN before enrollment is accepted.
  4. Select an enrollment duration. Choose continuous enrollment if you want to remain in the program in future years, or one-time enrollment if you want participation to end after the current calendar year.
  5. Record the displayed PIN securely. Store it where you can retrieve it when preparing a return, but do not leave it in an unsecured message, document, or shared account.

Online enrollment is also the best recovery method later: the current PIN can normally be retrieved from the same account instead of waiting for a mailed notice.

What to do if online verification does not work

Use Form 15227 when you meet the current income condition

If you cannot access or validate an IRS Online Account, the IRS provides a guided submission associated with Form 15227. Current IRS guidance states that the last-filed-return adjusted gross income must be below $84,000 for an individual or below $168,000 for married filing jointly. Those figures are identified by the IRS for 2026 guidance; confirm the live IRS instructions before submitting because limits and procedures may be revised.

Submitting the form does not bypass identity verification. The IRS still has to establish that you are the taxpayer requesting the PIN. If the IRS cannot verify you through this route, use the in-person option rather than repeatedly sending incomplete requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schedule a Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment

A taxpayer who cannot use either the online account or Form 15227 route may schedule an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Bring the identity-verification documents the IRS requests for the appointment. The center is an alternative verification channel, not a way to obtain a PIN without proving your identity.

How to use the PIN when filing

Use the current calendar year’s PIN on an applicable federal individual return if the IRS has issued one to you. The IRS FAQ identifies these forms:

  • Form 1040
  • Form 1040-NR
  • Form 1040-PR
  • Form 1040-SR
  • Form 1040-SS
  • Form 1040-X

The IP PIN does not apply to a state income tax return or to Form 4868, the federal individual extension request. It is used for the federal individual returns covered by IRS instructions.

Match the PIN to the filing calendar year

The key rule is based on when you file, not only on the tax year shown on the return. The current year’s PIN applies to a current-year return filed during that calendar year, and also to a prior-year or amended return filed during that same calendar year. For example, if you file an amended return in 2026, use the 2026 PIN even if the amendment concerns an earlier tax year. A 2025 PIN should not be reused in 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Joint returns require each spouse’s number

On a joint return, every spouse who has an IP PIN must enter that spouse’s own number. One spouse’s PIN does not cover the other spouse. Confirm both numbers before submitting the return.

Electronic filing and dependents

An incorrect PIN can cause an electronically filed return to be rejected. Correct the number in the tax software and retransmit according to the software’s instructions. If a dependent has been issued an IP PIN, the IRS requires additional entries for an e-filed return. Follow the relevant IRS form instructions and the prompts in your tax software for the dependent’s information; do not assume that entering only the taxpayer’s PIN is sufficient.

Paper filing

If you cannot obtain or recover the PIN and must file on paper, IRS guidance allows a paper return without the PIN in some situations. The IRS warns that processing and any refund may be delayed. Check the current lost-PIN instructions before choosing this fallback, because exceptions apply.

What a tax preparer can and cannot do

A tax professional cannot request an IP PIN for a client. You must enroll and complete identity verification yourself. After you provide the PIN to a tax preparer you chose, the preparer may enter it while preparing and filing your return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give the number only for the purpose of preparing or filing the return. Confirm the preparer’s identity and delivery method before sharing it, and do not send it to someone who contacted you unexpectedly claiming to be from the IRS.

How to recover a lost PIN or a missing notice

Start with your IRS Online Account

Sign in to the IRS Online Account and retrieve the current year’s PIN from your profile. This is normally faster than requesting a mailed reissue and avoids confusion between an old number and the number valid for the current calendar year.

Request a mailed reissue when online retrieval is unavailable

If you cannot access the account, the IRS says you may call 800-908-4490 for identity-verified reissue by mail. The current lost-PIN guidance says the number is mailed to the address of record within 21 days after verification. The IRS may not be able to reissue by mail during its annual maintenance period or when you are enrolling for the first time during the current year. Check the current IRS page for operating hours and exceptions before calling.

Use paper filing only as a last resort

When the IRS cannot reissue the PIN and you cannot access an online account, IRS guidance says you may mail a paper return without the PIN in situations covered by its instructions. Expect possible processing and refund delays. Retain proof of mailing and monitor the return rather than submitting duplicate returns electronically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the PIN private and recognize impersonation attempts

The IRS states: “The IRS will never call, email, text, or message a taxpayer through social media channels to request their IP PIN.” That rule is a practical test for unsolicited contacts. If someone initiates contact and asks for the number while claiming to be the IRS, do not provide it. End the contact and use an official IRS channel that you open yourself.

  • Store the PIN in a secure password manager or another protected location.
  • Share it only when preparing or filing a return, including with a tax professional you selected.
  • Never post it in a public forum or send it in response to an unexpected message.
  • Remember that the PIN authenticates a return; it is not proof of identity for an IRS phone call or office visit.

A practical IP PIN checklist

  1. Decide whether you want continuous or one-time enrollment.
  2. Enroll through the IRS Online Account and complete identity verification.
  3. If online verification is unavailable, check the current Form 15227 income limits and process.
  4. If neither route works, schedule a Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment and bring the requested documents.
  5. Save the current year’s six-digit PIN securely.
  6. Before filing, verify that you are using the PIN for the calendar year in which the return is filed.
  7. On a joint return, confirm that each spouse’s own PIN is entered.
  8. Follow the IRS instructions for any dependent who has an IP PIN.
  9. If the PIN is missing, retrieve it online first; use the mailed-reissue process only after online recovery is unavailable.
  10. Ignore unsolicited requests for the number, because the IRS does not request IP PINs by phone, email, text, or social media.

Common mistakes and the fix for each

Mistake Why it causes trouble Fix
Using last year’s PIN The IRS generates a new number annually. Retrieve the current year’s PIN in your IRS Online Account.
Entering one spouse’s PIN for both spouses Each spouse with a PIN must enter that spouse’s own number. Verify both numbers before filing the joint return.
Assuming the PIN belongs on a state return or Form 4868 The IP PIN requirement described here is for applicable federal individual returns. Follow the specific instructions for the form being filed.
Giving the PIN to an unsolicited caller The IRS does not request an IP PIN through initiated phone, email, text, or social-media contact. Do not share it; contact the IRS through an official channel you access independently.
Waiting for mail when the account already displays the PIN Mailed recovery takes time and may be unavailable during maintenance or first-time enrollment. Check the IRS Online Account first.
Assuming a preparer can enroll you Tax professionals cannot request an IP PIN for clients. Complete enrollment yourself, then provide the PIN to the preparer you chose.

What the IP PIN does not change

You still must file on time, report your income accurately, and follow all other federal and state filing requirements. The IP PIN is one authentication step; it does not replace return information, identity verification for other IRS services, or ordinary account-security practices.

Calendar-year timing and IRS notices

The filing-year rule can be easy to overlook when you handle several returns at once. A 2026 PIN belongs on any covered federal individual return submitted during 2026, whether that return reports 2025 income, corrects an older year, or is a current-year filing. If you file the same amended return in a later calendar year, use the PIN for that later year. Always retrieve the number again rather than relying on a saved PIN from a prior season.

Continuous enrollment keeps you in the program, but it does not give you one permanent number. The IRS generates a replacement six-digit PIN each year. One-time enrollment ends after the current calendar year, so you would need to enroll again if you later decide to participate. The IRS may deliver an annual CP01A notice, but the online account is the reliable place to check the current number. During annual maintenance, online display or mailed reissue services can be temporarily unavailable, so avoid waiting until the filing deadline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up your filing workflow before tax season

After enrolling, add an IP PIN check to your normal filing routine. At the start of preparation, sign in to the IRS account and write down only the current year’s number in a protected password manager entry. Give the number to your chosen preparer through that firm’s secure client portal rather than ordinary email or text when possible. Before e-filing, compare the digits with the IRS account one more time; a single transposed digit can cause rejection.

For a joint return, collect both spouses’ current numbers before the preparer starts. If a child or other dependent has an IP PIN, ask the preparer or software how the dependent’s PIN and related identity fields must be entered. Keep a record of the submission confirmation and any rejection code. Correct the PIN and retransmit only after confirming the current number; repeatedly sending a rejected return with the same incorrect number will not resolve the issue.

Understanding the Form 15227 route

Form 15227 is an alternative for taxpayers who cannot access or pass validation for an IRS Online Account. The current IRS guidance lists an adjusted gross income threshold below $84,000 for an individual or below $168,000 for married filing jointly. These limits apply to the last filed return used for verification, not to an estimate of this year’s income. A taxpayer at or above the applicable limit may need to use the online account or an in-person appointment instead.

The guided submission still requires the IRS to verify you. Use information that matches your most recently filed return and follow every instruction for responding to IRS contact. Sending multiple incomplete submissions can slow resolution. If your address, filing status, or access to the last return has changed, an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center may be more practical because staff can review identity documents in person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security practices for the IRS account itself

Protecting the account that displays your PIN is as important as protecting the digits. Use a unique password, enable the strongest sign-in options the IRS offers, and sign out on shared computers. Do not save the PIN in a document synchronized to a family or workplace account. If a preparer asks for it through an unfamiliar link, verify the firm’s phone number independently before responding.

The IRS Tax Tip issued July 16, 2026, repeats that the agency will never call, email, text, or use social media to request an IP PIN. A legitimate IRS employee may need other verification through an official process, but an unsolicited demand for your six-digit filing credential is a warning sign. An IP PIN also cannot be used to prove who you are when calling the IRS or visiting an office.

When a paper return is unavoidable

Paper filing without a PIN is not the preferred solution, but IRS instructions allow it in certain lost-PIN situations after online retrieval and mailed reissue are unavailable. Sign and date the return, use the correct mailing address for the form, and obtain proof of mailing. Do not mail a paper copy and then e-file the same return unless the IRS specifically instructs you to do so; duplicate submissions can create additional processing problems. Expect a longer wait for processing or a refund and monitor your account for notices.

Does my IP PIN stay the same every year?

No. The IRS generates a new PIN each year. Use the PIN for the calendar year in which you file, including when filing a prior-year or amended return.

What if I lost my IP PIN or did not receive a new one in the mail?

Retrieve the current number in your IRS Online Account first. If that is impossible, call 800-908-4490 for identity-verified mail reissue; the IRS says delivery generally takes up to 21 days after verification, subject to maintenance and other exceptions.

Should I give my IP PIN to anyone?

Give it only to a tax professional you selected when that person is preparing or filing your return. Never provide it to an unsolicited caller, email sender, texter, or social-media contact claiming to be the IRS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can my tax preparer request an IP PIN for me?

No. You must enroll and pass identity verification yourself. Afterward, you may provide the PIN to your preparer so it can be entered on the return.

Does an IP PIN go on my state return or Form 4868?

No. The IRS IP PIN applies to covered federal individual returns, including Forms 1040 and 1040-X. It is not entered on a state return or Form 4868.

What happens if I enter the wrong PIN?

An electronically filed return may be rejected. Retrieve the current calendar year’s PIN, correct the entry in your tax software, and retransmit following the software’s instructions. A paper fallback may delay processing.

Do both spouses need to enter a PIN on a joint return?

Yes. Each spouse who has been issued an IP PIN must enter that spouse’s own number. One spouse’s PIN cannot substitute for the other’s.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a dependent have an IP PIN?

Yes. If the IRS issued one to a dependent, an e-filed return requires additional dependent-related entries. Follow the applicable IRS instructions and your tax software’s prompts.

The Bottom Line

An IRS IP PIN is a free, annual six-digit safeguard for federal tax returns. Enroll through an IRS Online Account when possible, use Form 15227 or an appointment when necessary, enter the current calendar year’s PIN for every covered return, and keep it away from unsolicited contacts. If it is missing, check your account before requesting a mailed reissue.
