How to protect your savings if your bank is in trouble

If you have deposits at a U.S. bank insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the first protection to check is the insurance limit: $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category. The limit includes principal and interest accrued through the date of a bank failure. Balances in the same category at the same bank are combined, while qualifying categories and separately insured banks can have separate limits.

Confirm the institution in FDIC BankFind, map every balance to its legal owner and ownership category, and use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE). If the bank closes, the FDIC generally transfers insured deposits to another bank or pays insured depositors directly; money above the applicable limit becomes a claim in the receivership rather than an insured payment.

What this guidance covers

This article addresses deposits held at FDIC-insured banks in the United States. FDIC rules do not automatically apply to credit unions, nonbank financial-technology companies, brokerage firms, or banks outside the United States. An app or financial brand may be only an intermediary; the legal bank holding the deposit determines whether FDIC insurance applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FDIC insurance protects against the failure of an insured bank. It does not protect an investment from market losses, guarantee uninterrupted access to an account, or reimburse theft and fraud. The FDIC material discussed here explains insurance and failure-resolution procedures, not the current financial condition of any particular institution.

Six actions to take before there is a bank closure

  1. Verify the legal institution. Search the bank in FDIC BankFind. Coverage is automatic for a qualifying deposit account at an FDIC-insured bank; you do not buy a separate policy or enroll. If you use a cash-management service, brokerage sweep, payment app, or other intermediary, identify the FDIC-insured bank that actually receives the funds and how the intermediary keeps ownership records.
  2. Inventory every deposit by bank and owner. Record checking accounts, savings accounts, money market deposit accounts, certificates of deposit (CDs), and accrued interest. Group accounts by the insured bank and legal ownership category, not by branch, nickname, online dashboard, or account number.
  3. Check account titles and records. A balance above $250,000 at one bank may receive more coverage only when it fits different qualifying ownership categories and each category’s documentation requirements. Opening several accounts with the same owner and category does not create several $250,000 limits.
  4. Run the numbers in EDIE. Enter the bank, balance, ownership, beneficiaries or co-owners, and other requested details. EDIE is an estimate, not a substitute for reviewing governing documents. Trusts, brokered deposits, pass-through arrangements, business accounts, and employee-benefit plans can require a manual determination.
  5. Separate deposits from investments. Check the product’s legal form. A product sold through a bank is not automatically an insured deposit. Use the product classifications below before deciding that a balance is protected.
  6. Keep evidence accessible. Save current statements, CD confirmations, beneficiary designations, trust instruments, business ownership records, and intermediary statements in a secure location. Those records can help the FDIC determine ownership if a resolution makes the account history difficult to reconstruct.

How the $250,000 FDIC limit is calculated

The FDIC’s standard insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category. The calculation includes the principal and interest accrued through the date the bank fails. The limit applies to the total in a category at that bank, rather than to each individual account.

Coverage dimension What counts What does not create a new limit
Insured bank Deposits at two separately insured banks are evaluated separately. Two branches, websites, or brands operated by the same insured bank are not separate insurance institutions.
Ownership category Each qualifying category can have its own limit when its rules and records are satisfied. Changing an account nickname or opening another account in the same category does not multiply coverage.
Balance Principal plus accrued interest through failure. Interest expected after the failure date is not part of the insured balance calculation.
Account type Checking, savings, money market deposit accounts, and time deposits such as CDs are deposit products. A bank’s investment or insurance product is not covered merely because the bank sells or administers it.

Why branches and account labels can mislead you

Suppose one person has $170,000 in a savings account at a bank’s downtown branch and $100,000 in a checking account at its online division. If both are single-owner deposits at the same insured bank, the combined $270,000 is assessed together. The first $250,000 fits the standard limit; the remaining amount is not made insured by the different branch or account label.

Ownership categories that can differ

FDIC guidance recognizes categories including single accounts, joint accounts, certain retirement accounts, revocable and irrevocable trust accounts, employee-benefit plan accounts, corporation, partnership and unincorporated-association accounts, and government accounts. The exact treatment depends on the category’s legal requirements and the information in the bank’s records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A category is not created simply by using a different name on a statement. For example, a joint account must meet the applicable joint-ownership rules, and a trust account depends on the trust relationship and required beneficiary information. If a category is not properly established or documented, the FDIC may aggregate the funds under another category.

Which products are insured—and which are not

Generally listed by the FDIC as insured deposit products Listed by the FDIC as not insured deposits
Checking accounts Stocks and bonds
Savings accounts Mutual funds
Money market deposit accounts Crypto assets
Time deposits, including CDs Life insurance and annuities
Other qualifying deposit accounts held at the insured bank Municipal securities
Safe-deposit boxes and their contents
U.S. Treasury bills, bonds, and notes

That distinction is about the asset, not the sales channel. A brokerage account that happens to hold a bank deposit may involve FDIC coverage for the deposit portion, subject to pass-through and recordkeeping rules; securities in the same account are not transformed into deposits.

What happens when an FDIC-insured bank fails

The FDIC becomes insurer and receiver

When an insured bank is closed, the FDIC acts in two capacities. As insurer, it protects deposits up to the applicable limit. As receiver, it takes control of the failed bank’s assets and liabilities and handles claims that are not covered by insurance.

Two common resolution paths

  • Assumption by a healthy bank: The FDIC may arrange for another institution to assume some or all deposit accounts. Instructions may explain the new bank’s name, account access, checks, cards, and any actions needed from customers.
  • Direct payment: The FDIC may pay insured depositors directly up to the amounts determined to be covered.

The FDIC’s FAQ says insured depositors have historically been paid within a few days, usually by the next business day. That is historical and general timing, not a guaranteed service level for every account. Trust deposits, brokered deposits, pass-through arrangements, and other complex records can take longer while the FDIC determines ownership and coverage and requests supplemental information.

What happens to money above the limit

An amount above the applicable insurance limit is an uninsured deposit. It becomes a claim handled through the receivership, alongside the failed bank’s other assets and liabilities. The official guidance does not establish a universal recovery percentage or promise that all excess funds will be returned. Filing a claim does not convert an uninsured balance into an insured one.

Ways to organize savings when balances exceed one limit

Distribution decisions should start with the legal coverage structure, not with rumors or a search for the highest advertised rate. The relevant comparisons are the identity of the separately insured bank, the ownership category and account title, the combined balance including accrued interest, and how easily you can access funds during a transfer or claims process.

Use genuinely separate insured banks

Deposits at separately insured banks are evaluated independently. Before relying on that separation, verify each bank in FDIC BankFind. A shared parent company, common app, or familiar brand name does not by itself establish separate insurance coverage; the insured legal institution does.

Use qualifying ownership categories carefully

Different legal categories may provide separate limits, but only when the category requirements are met. Do not create a nominal second owner, beneficiary, or entity solely to obtain a higher number without confirming that the arrangement is legally valid, properly titled, and accurately recorded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave an operating cushion

Interest can push a balance over a limit even when the opening principal was below it. Include expected accrued interest in your review and leave room for ordinary deposits, payroll, or transfers. A calculation made on one date can change as the balance changes.

Balance insurance planning with access needs

Spreading funds can add transfer steps, separate online logins, different cutoff times, and varying procedures if a bank is resolved. Keep enough accessible operating cash in an account whose statements and ownership records you can readily produce, while still checking its insurance category.

Special cases that need closer review

Trust accounts

Trust coverage can depend on the trust type, beneficiaries, trustee records, and the bank’s account-registration data. A trust document that exists outside the bank’s records may not be enough for an immediate insurance determination. Keep the executed document and any amendments available and ask the FDIC for guidance when the balance exceeds a standard limit or the beneficiaries are complex.

Brokered and pass-through deposits

A broker or intermediary may place funds at one or more banks. Coverage can pass through to the underlying depositor only if the arrangement and records satisfy the applicable rules. Obtain a statement identifying the receiving bank, the legal owner, the allocation, and the information the intermediary maintains. Do not assume that one consolidated statement represents one insured bank or one ownership category.

Business and employee-benefit accounts

Corporation, partnership, unincorporated-association, and employee-benefit-plan accounts have category-specific requirements. The entity’s legal existence, plan structure, participants, and recordkeeping can affect the calculation. Keep formation documents, plan records, and participant information together with the bank statements.

Retirement accounts

Certain retirement accounts are treated as a separate ownership category, but the account must meet the applicable FDIC definition. Confirm the account type and registration rather than relying on a generic label such as “retirement savings.”

How to calculate your exposure with examples

Example: two single-owner accounts at one bank

You hold $140,000 in a savings account and $90,000 in a checking account, both solely in your name at the same insured bank. The combined $230,000 is within the single-account limit. A later $25,000 deposit would bring the category to $255,000, before considering any accrued interest, leaving an amount above the standard limit.

Example: separate banks

You hold $220,000 in a single-owner CD at Bank A and $220,000 in a single-owner savings account at Bank B. If both institutions are separately FDIC-insured, each bank is evaluated separately and each balance is below the standard limit. Moving the second balance to Bank A would combine the two amounts under Bank A’s single-account category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: a different category

You hold a qualifying single account and a separately qualifying joint account at the same bank. Each category is evaluated under its own rules, so the joint account is not automatically added to your single-account total. The joint account’s coverage still depends on the number of owners, each owner’s interest, and the applicable recordkeeping requirements.

Example: accrued interest

A CD has a principal of $248,000 and $3,000 of interest accrued by the failure date. The insurance calculation uses $251,000, not only the original principal. The excess is treated according to the receivership process unless another qualifying category applies.

What to do if the bank is actually closed

  1. Read the FDIC or acquiring-bank notice. Use the instructions supplied for account access, checks, cards, direct deposits, and any required forms.
  2. Do not move money based only on a rumor. A social-media post or unverified message is not evidence that a particular bank is failing. For bank-specific concerns, consult current regulator or institution communications.
  3. Preserve statements and legal records. Keep copies of balances, ownership documents, trust instruments, and intermediary reports from before and after the closure.
  4. Confirm the insured amount. Compare the FDIC’s determination with your records. Complex arrangements may require supplemental information before coverage is finalized.
  5. Track any uninsured claim separately. Amounts above the limit follow the receiver’s claims process and should not be treated as immediately available insured cash.

How to review your setup regularly

Perform a coverage review after a major deposit, inheritance, property sale, business payment, account-title change, marriage or divorce, creation or amendment of a trust, or change in beneficiaries. Recheck when a CD renews because the balance and registration may change. Include accrued interest and all accounts held through intermediaries.

A practical worksheet has one row for each account and columns for the legal insured bank, account type, legal owner, ownership category, principal, accrued interest, beneficiaries or co-owners, and the record proving that status. Total the rows by bank and category, then compare the totals with the applicable limits in EDIE.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are outside the United States

The $250,000 figure is a U.S. FDIC rule. Other countries use different deposit-protection agencies, limits, currencies, ownership definitions, and payout procedures. Identify the national insurer and the legal institution holding the funds before applying any coverage number. A U.S. account held at a foreign branch, a foreign account held through a U.S. platform, and a nonbank wallet can have materially different rules.
