Protect your data by selecting a bank that clearly explains its AI processing, disabling optional permissions and personalisation, securing access with two independent authentication factors, and regularly reviewing devices, alerts and third-party consents. Ask specifically whether transaction data is used for model training, fraud scoring or personalisation, how long it is retained, who can access it and how you can object or request deletion.
European data-protection and payment rules provide a baseline, not a complete privacy guarantee. GDPR principles require data minimisation, limited retention and restricted access, while PSD2 strong customer authentication (SCA) requires two independent factors for specified online banking and payment actions. Each bank’s privacy notice, settings and recovery process determine how those principles work in practice.

Why an AI banking app needs extra scrutiny
AI can make a banking app useful: it may categorise transactions, detect unusual activity, forecast cash flow or personalise financial guidance. Those functions also increase the number of signals a provider may collect and analyse. Depending on the service, signals can include transaction history, device characteristics, IP address, location, login timing, contact data and interaction patterns.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The key question is not whether a bank uses “AI” as a label. It is whether each data element is necessary for a stated purpose, used on a clearly explained legal basis, retained only as long as needed and accessible only to people or processors who require it. A privacy-friendly app should let you use core banking services without silently enrolling you in optional profiling.

Fraud detection deserves a separate distinction. Machine-learning analysis of device, IP or location signals can add a security control, but it does not replace the two independent elements required for SCA when PSD2 applies. Behavioural biometrics, such as typing rhythm or gesture patterns, can also create GDPR concerns because continuous data capture may profile individuals and expose sensitive information if misused or compromised.
Know the European rules that protect you
GDPR privacy by default
European Commission guidance says that, by default, organisations should process personal data with the highest privacy protection. In practical terms, a provider should:
- Collect only data necessary for the stated service or security purpose.
- Keep it for the shortest period compatible with that purpose and legal obligations.
- Limit access to authorised staff and service providers who need it.
- Explain purposes, recipients, retention and international transfers in understandable language.
These are principles, not a guarantee that every app uses minimal settings automatically. Read the bank’s privacy notice and check the controls exposed in the app.

The European Banking Authority defines SCA as “an authentication based on the use of two or more elements categorised as knowledge (something only the user knows), possession (something only the user possesses) and inherence (something that the user is).” The elements must be independent, so compromising one should not compromise the others.
PSD2 SCA applies when a payer accesses an account online, initiates an electronic payment or performs a remote action that may carry fraud risk, subject to the regulation’s exemptions. A password plus a code generated on the same compromised device may not provide the separation you expect. Ask how the bank binds a device, what it treats as each factor and how it handles recovery.

Evaluate a bank before enabling its AI features
Read the privacy notice before activating AI budgeting, automatic categorisation, financial coaching or personalised offers. Record the answers to these questions; vague or missing answers are a meaningful comparison signal.
Identify the parties and purposes
- Who is the data controller for the app and each AI feature?
- Which companies act as processors, fraud-service providers, cloud hosts or analytics vendors?
- Is transaction data used for account operation, fraud scoring, product personalisation, general model training, or several of these?
- Are the purposes optional, and can you use the core account without consenting to them?
Check retention and transfers
- How long are raw transactions, derived profiles, device fingerprints and model inputs retained?
- Are separate retention periods stated for fraud investigations, customer support and marketing?
- Are data or support operations transferred outside the European Economic Area, and what safeguards are described?
- Does the notice distinguish data used to make a decision from data retained to audit that decision?
Look for human review and explanations
- When an AI system blocks a payment or flags an account, can a trained employee review it?
- How can you challenge an incorrect fraud or risk decision?
- Does the bank explain the categories of data and broad logic used, without claiming that the model is impossible to explain?
Reduce optional collection in the app
Menu names vary by provider, but privacy, security, notifications and consent screens usually contain the relevant controls. Make changes before you connect extra services.

- Disable optional personalisation. Turn off tailored offers, behavioural advertising, automated coaching or similar features unless their value justifies the additional profiling.
- Review contact access. Deny contact syncing if it is not required for a payment feature you use. Revisit the operating system’s app-permission screen after updates.
- Restrict location. Select “while using” or deny precise location when approximate location is sufficient. A fraud-control feature should explain why it needs continuous or precise location.
- Inspect open-banking consents. In the bank’s connected-services or third-party-access page, revoke providers you no longer recognise or need.
- Save evidence. Download or screenshot the consent and privacy settings after changing them, including the date. This helps if a later dispute concerns what you enabled.
Turning off an optional feature may remove its budgeting or personalisation benefit. It should not be presented as a reason to grant unrelated access to contacts, precise location or marketing data.
Secure login and payment approval
Use a unique passphrase and a locked device
Create a long, unique passphrase for the bank. Do not reuse it for email, your mobile account or another financial service. Protect the phone or tablet with a current operating-system lock, and enable automatic locking. Never disclose a one-time code, password or approval request to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
Choose two genuinely independent factors
Use the strongest combination the bank supports, normally a knowledge factor plus an independent possession or inherence factor. An authenticator-app approval or a separate hardware device can provide possession; a device biometric can provide inherence when the bank’s implementation treats it that way. Ask whether the app’s biometric setting unlocks a locally stored credential or sends a reusable biometric template to the bank. The former generally exposes less biometric data, but the exact design is provider-specific.

Consider a FIDO2 security key
A FIDO2/WebAuthn hardware security key can represent the possession factor and resist many phishing attacks because the credential is bound to the legitimate website or app. Compatibility is not automatic: the bank must support FIDO2/WebAuthn or a compatible hardware-key flow. Before relying on a key, confirm:
Recommended Free Tools
- Whether it works for login, payment confirmation, or only selected actions.
- Whether the mobile app, web portal and your device operating system support it.
- How many keys you can register and where to keep a spare.
- What recovery process applies if the key is lost, damaged or unavailable.
If the bank does not support a key, use its strongest available MFA, protect the registered phone number and understand how account recovery can be abused.
Handle biometric prompts carefully
Biometric login is convenient, but it is not a substitute for judgment. Keep a device passcode that no one else knows, disable biometric unlock temporarily if you may be compelled to unlock the device, and never approve an unfamiliar login or payment prompt. Distinguish a one-time device unlock from behavioural biometrics that continuously analyse typing, swipes, movement or location; the latter raises additional profiling and data-minimisation questions.
Ask whether your transactions train AI
A bank may use transaction data for several different activities, and “AI use” does not identify which one. Send the bank a written question through its secure message channel or privacy contact:
- Is my transaction data used to train, fine-tune or evaluate a general or bank-specific model?
- Is it used only for real-time fraud scoring, or also for product personalisation, marketing or credit-related decisions?
- What is the legal basis for each purpose, and is consent required or optional?
- How long are the original transactions, derived profiles and model-training records retained?
- Which processors or vendors receive the data, and are there transfers outside the European Economic Area?
- When an automated system flags me, is there human review and a route to challenge the result?
- Can I object, disable optional processing or request deletion, and what statutory retention limits apply?
Keep the bank’s reply. Regulatory rules establish the principles and SCA requirements, but they do not reveal the exact model, training source, retention period or processor location used by every provider.

Keep devices, sessions and consents under control
Maintain the trusted device
- Install the official banking app from the device’s recognised app store and keep it updated.
- Apply operating-system and browser security updates promptly.
- Avoid banking on rooted or jailbroken devices, where normal security controls may be weakened.
- Use the bank’s device-management page to remove old phones, tablets and browsers.
React to alerts instead of dismissing them
Enable transaction, login, beneficiary-change and device-registration alerts. If an alert is unexpected, do not tap its embedded link or approve the request. Open the official app or type the bank’s known address, review recent activity, lock the card or account if necessary and contact the bank through its published channel.
Review third-party access
At regular intervals, inspect open-banking permissions, connected budgeting tools and payment beneficiaries. Revoke anything unfamiliar, expired or no longer useful. A consent that was appropriate for a one-time service should not remain indefinitely by default.
Use your GDPR rights when the explanation is inadequate
Send rights requests to the privacy contact identified in the bank’s notice. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to request access to your data, correction of inaccurate information, erasure, restriction of processing, objection to certain processing or portability. State the specific AI purpose, account or data category involved and the date of your original question.
Ask for a clear explanation when a fraud or profiling decision affects you. Keep copies of your request, the bank’s acknowledgement and its final response. If the response does not address the issue, the privacy notice should identify the relevant supervisory authority or complaint route.
Compare European banking apps on privacy, not just features
| Criterion | Questions to ask | Stronger signal | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data minimisation and retention | What data is required for each feature, and how long is each category kept? | Separate purposes and retention periods with optional features off by default | Broad “service improvement” wording with no periods |
| AI transparency | What does each model do, and is transaction data used for training? | Plain-language purpose, data categories and limits | AI described only as “smart” or “personalised” |
| Profiling controls | Can behavioural analysis, marketing or personalisation be disabled? | Granular switches that do not disable core banking | One bundled consent for unrelated uses |
| Authentication and recovery | Which factors are supported, how are devices bound, and how is a lost device replaced? | Independent MFA, phishing-resistant options and documented recovery | Recovery based only on easily obtained personal details |
| Open-banking consent | Where can you see and revoke third-party access? | Central consent dashboard with dates and providers | No visible list or unclear revocation process |
| Processors and transfers | Who receives data and where is it processed? | Named categories of processors and transfer safeguards | Unspecified “partners” or no transfer explanation |
| Fraud and breach handling | How are alerts, false positives and incidents handled? | Rapid alerts, human review and clear support channels | Unclear escalation or no way to challenge a block |
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Accepting every permission during setup
Fix this by completing registration first, then enabling only the permission required for a function you actually use. Recheck permissions after major app updates.

Assuming AI fraud detection is automatically privacy-safe
Fraud prevention can be legitimate and valuable, but ask what signals are collected, whether behavioural profiling is involved and how long the signals remain available. Security benefit does not remove the need for minimisation and transparency.
Using SMS or email codes without understanding the risk
SMS and email can be exposed through number takeover or account compromise. If the bank offers an authenticator approval or supported FIDO2 key, compare the independence of that factor and its recovery process before choosing.
Ignoring recovery until a phone is lost
Register a spare factor where permitted, store recovery codes securely and learn the bank’s out-of-band verification process. Do not weaken security by leaving an old device enrolled.
Leaving old third-party consents active
Review connected services on a schedule, not only after a suspicious transaction. Revoke access immediately when you close an external budgeting or payment service.
Quick Recap
A practical privacy routine
- When opening an account: read the privacy notice, identify AI purposes and set optional personalisation, contacts, location and marketing controls.
- Before first payment: enable the strongest available MFA, test alerts and confirm recovery for a lost device or security key.
- Each month: review recent logins, registered devices, payment alerts, beneficiaries and open-banking consents.
- After an unexpected prompt: deny it, access the bank through the official app, inspect activity and contact support using a trusted channel.
- After a policy change: reread the updated purposes, processors, retention periods and objection controls; disable optional processing you no longer want.
- When leaving a service: revoke third-party access, remove devices and submit any applicable GDPR request while retaining confirmation.
