Protect it by linking only a verified, supported device; approving the smallest practical spending limit; keeping the watch, companion phone and UPI account locked; never sharing your UPI PIN or OTP; and contacting the participating app or bank immediately if the watch is lost.
The exact safeguards depend on whether the watch uses UPI Circle IoT delegation, card-based contactless payments or a stored-value wallet. A contactless symbol alone does not prove that a watch supports UPI.

What “wearable UPI” actually means
People use “wearable UPI” to describe more than one product. Under the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) UPI Circle IoT framework, a watch or another permitted device can act as a secondary payment profile linked to a primary UPI account. The primary user authorizes that profile, sets a limit and remains responsible for the delegated spending.
A different watch may make card-network contactless payments from a tokenized card, or use a stored-value balance. Those products have different authentication rules, limits and dispute processes. NPCI’s IoT rules do not automatically apply to them. Before relying on any watch for a purchase, identify the exact payment rail shown in the watch maker’s app and the participating UPI app or bank.

Why linking a watch is a financial authorization
NPCI’s circular dated 8 October 2025 extends UPI Circle to permitted IoT devices and software profiles, explicitly including watches. Linking is therefore an authorization decision: the primary and secondary devices must be close to one another during setup, the primary user must consent, and a spending limit must be specified.
Only NPCI-permitted IoT devices or software profiles may be linked. The circular limits this IoT use to domestic person-to-merchant transactions and requires every IoT debit transaction to be initiated by explicit user action. A watch should not be able to create an unattended stream of debits simply because it is paired with your phone.
Availability is not universal. NPCI describes AI- or software-driven IoT payments as a limited-user, closed-group pilot, and its public pages do not provide a current, comprehensive list of ordinary-user watch models, banks or apps. Treat a sales claim as conditional until the exact model, app, bank and customer account are confirmed as supported.

Use the lowest limit that still covers the purchases you expect to make. The figures below come from two NPCI publications with different dates and contexts, so check the live limit displayed by your participating app before approving a link.

A provider may show a lower user-selected limit than these ceilings. A lower setting is useful because it limits exposure if the watch is stolen, left unlocked or linked to an account that later becomes compromised. Revisit the limit when your spending pattern changes, rather than raising it permanently for an occasional large purchase.
Check eligibility before you link anything
Verify the exact payment route
Look for an explicit UPI Circle IoT or equivalent UPI-device enrollment flow in the participating UPI app. A watch that supports a card wallet, NFC tap or contactless logo may still have no UPI capability. Ask the bank or app whether the feature is available for your account and region, not merely whether the watch contains NFC hardware.

Confirm the parties that control the account
You need the mobile number already registered in the primary UPI app, access to that phone for OTP verification, and an eligible bank account and UPI app. The watch should remain under your physical control while it is being enrolled. Do not let a merchant, caller or “support” agent perform the linking on your behalf.
Update and lock the devices first
Install current software on the watch and companion phone, enable the watch’s available screen lock or biometric unlock, and protect the phone and UPI app with their own authentication. These are practical security measures, not universal UPI Circle eligibility requirements; the available device features differ by model.
How the UPI Circle IoT linking flow works
NPCI’s public product description gives the following general sequence. Labels can differ between apps, so use the participating provider’s current screens rather than a third-party tutorial.
- Start in the IoT or wearable app. Choose its UPI registration or linking option and enter the mobile number already used in your primary UPI app.
- Verify the OTP. Enter the one-time password only in the legitimate enrollment flow you initiated. No genuine support representative needs you to read an OTP aloud.
- Continue to the primary UPI app. The flow may use a QR code or an intent that opens the established UPI app on your phone.
- Inspect the device details. Confirm the watch or software profile shown by the primary app is the device you intend to authorize. Check the permissions and proposed spending limit.
- Give consent and set the limit. Choose the lowest useful limit, taking account of any initial-linking restriction shown by the app.
- Authenticate in the primary app. The product description says the primary user authenticates with a UPI PIN or an available biometric method. Do not assume the watch itself will accept, store or display your UPI PIN.
- Complete the proximity-based link. Keep the primary phone and secondary watch close together until the app confirms completion. If the devices are not nearby, stop and restart through the provider rather than accepting an unexpected remote-link request.
After linking, the watch may initiate a permitted merchant payment, but the transaction still has to follow the provider’s authentication and explicit-action design. The link is not permission for arbitrary transfers, person-to-person payments or international purchases under the cited IoT rules.
Protect the UPI PIN and OTP from social engineering
NPCI’s consumer guidance is unambiguous: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” It also says BHIM does not store or read the PIN and that bank customer support will never ask for it. Treat any call, text, QR-code instruction or screen-sharing request that asks for your PIN or OTP as a fraud signal.
- Enter the PIN only in the trusted UPI app or authentication screen that you opened for a payment or account action.
- Never type the PIN into a form sent by a caller, merchant, courier, social-media account or remote-support session.
- Do not disclose an OTP, even if the caller already knows your name, phone number or recent transaction.
- Reject “refund,” “KYC,” “account unblocking” or “device verification” stories that require you to approve an unexpected collect request or link.
- Shield the phone screen when entering credentials and avoid saving screenshots or notes containing the PIN.
A biometric option can reduce how often you type a PIN, but it does not make a request trustworthy. Confirm the payee, amount and device shown by the app before approving any biometric prompt.

Secure the watch, phone and controlling account
On the wearable
Enable the watch’s screen lock and, where offered, biometric unlock. Set the shortest practical auto-lock period. Do not leave a payment-enabled watch unattended while it is unlocked, and remove it from a shared or loaned device-management account. If the watch can display transaction notifications, configure them so another person cannot read sensitive balances or merchant details at a glance.
On the companion phone
Use a strong phone passcode, keep the operating system and UPI app updated, and install apps only from the device’s official store. Review which apps can read notifications, accessibility controls or Bluetooth-related data. A malicious app with broad control of the phone can undermine the security of a well-locked watch.
On the UPI account
Keep the registered mobile number under your control, review account alerts and periodically inspect the list of linked secondary devices. Remove profiles you no longer use through the participating provider’s current device-management process. Do not assume that changing a watch strap, resetting the watch or unpairing Bluetooth automatically revokes the UPI authorization.

Do not assume every wearable is PIN-less
The Reserve Bank of India’s Authentication mechanisms for digital payment transactions Directions, 2025, issued on 25 September 2025, state that covered domestic digital payments must use at least two distinct authentication factors unless an exemption applies. For transactions other than card-present transactions, at least one factor must be dynamic. The Directions require compliance by 1 April 2026 and allow issuers to choose authentication factors consistent with those rules.
Separately, an NPCI circular dated 7 October 2025 introduced optional smartphone on-device biometrics instead of a UPI PIN for eligible UPI transactions, initially up to ₹5,000. That is a smartphone authentication option, not a universal wearable rule. One vendor announcement from Amazon India describes a biometric, device-encrypted, PIN-less wearable implementation; it describes that company’s implementation and does not establish how every watch, bank or UPI app works.
Before depending on a watch, make a small test purchase and identify where authentication occurs, which factor is requested, what amount limits apply and what happens if the watch is removed from your wrist or loses connectivity. If the provider cannot clearly explain the flow, do not use the watch for routine spending.

What to do if the watch is lost or stolen
Act as though the linked payment endpoint is exposed, even if you believe the screen lock is enabled.

- Contact the participating UPI app or bank immediately. Ask the provider to secure, suspend or unlink the wearable profile and confirm what has been revoked. The available procedure is provider-specific; official material does not establish one universal “lost watch” menu.
- Use the watch maker’s account and device controls. If the manufacturer offers a current remote-lock, erase or device-removal function, use it, but do not treat that action alone as proof that the UPI delegation has ended.
- Review recent transactions and alerts. Note the time you noticed the loss and any unfamiliar merchant, amount or device activity.
- Report an unauthorized payment. Raise the dispute with the participating UPI app or bank and follow its instructions for account protection and evidence.
- Secure the primary phone and account. Change compromised device credentials and remove unknown sessions or linked profiles using the provider’s current controls.
Do not wait for a universal remote-disable feature to appear. The safest response is prompt provider contact followed by transaction review.
Monitor payments and handle a suspected fraud
Turn on transaction notifications in the UPI app and bank account, and check the payment history after using the watch. Compare the merchant name and amount with what the watch displayed. Save the notification, date, amount and reference details if anything is wrong.
For an unauthorized transaction, contact the participating UPI app or bank through its official in-app or published support route. Tell the agent that the payment involved a linked wearable profile, ask whether the profile can be suspended, and request a dispute reference number. Never use the same call to disclose a PIN or OTP; legitimate support should not need either credential.

The watch has NFC but no UPI option
NFC hardware and card contactless support do not prove UPI Circle compatibility. Check the exact model and app with the bank or UPI provider before purchasing or linking.

The enrollment asks for a remote approval
NPCI’s IoT flow requires proximity between primary and secondary devices and explicit user action. Cancel an unexpected remote request and restart from the established primary app.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
The app shows a limit higher than you need
Lower it before consent if the app allows that choice. A provider’s maximum is not a target spending amount.
A caller claims to be bank support
End the call and contact the bank through its official channel. NPCI says bank customer support will not ask for your UPI PIN.
Biometric approval appears unexpectedly
Read the payee and amount before approving. Biometrics authenticate you to a device; they do not validate the merchant or prove that a request is legitimate.
The watch is unpaired but payments still appear possible
Bluetooth unpairing or a factory reset may not revoke a server-side payment profile. Ask the UPI app or bank to confirm unlinking.
How to compare two wearable payment options
If you are choosing between products, compare the payment implementation rather than the watch’s general specifications.
| Question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Is it available to you? | Whether the exact watch, UPI app, bank and account are currently permitted and generally available. |
| Which payment rail is used? | UPI Circle IoT delegation, card contactless payment or stored value. |
| Where does authentication occur? | Whether the PIN, biometric or another factor is entered on the phone, watch or another approved device. |
| What are the limits? | Per-transaction, daily and monthly caps, plus whether you can lower them. |
| How is loss handled? | The provider’s current process for remotely securing or unlinking the device. |
| Who handles problems? | Which bank or app sends alerts, investigates disputes and controls the linked profile. |
Current official material does not establish comparable model-by-model answers for a broad retail watch market, so a ranked product list would create false confidence. Verify each option directly with the participating provider.
A practical setup and review checklist
- Confirm that the exact watch and app support the payment route you intend to use.
- Link only from the established primary UPI app while both devices are nearby.
- Read the device identity, permissions and limit before giving consent.
- Set the smallest useful limit and review it periodically.
- Keep the watch, phone, UPI app and registered mobile number under your control.
- Use screen locks or biometrics where available, and keep software current.
- Never share a UPI PIN or OTP with a person or prompt you did not initiate.
- Check alerts and payment history after transactions.
- Know which provider to contact before an incident occurs.
- If the watch disappears, request provider-side suspension or unlinking immediately and dispute anything unauthorized.
Bottom line
Wearable UPI can be managed safely when you treat the watch as a delegated financial instrument. Verify compatibility, authorize it deliberately, keep the spending limit low, authenticate only through trusted devices, and rely on the participating UPI app or bank—not a generic watch reset—to revoke access after loss. The PIN remains confidential, and no biometric or contactless feature changes that rule.
