After applying for federal disaster assistance, protect the information tied to your claim: keep your FEMA application number and nine-digit registration ID private, verify every unexpected contact through FEMA, and watch for credit or account activity you did not authorize. FEMA says it contacts people who have already contacted the agency or registered for assistance; it does not ask for payment.
If someone applied in your name, tell FEMA immediately that you did not submit the application, ask the agency to stop processing it, preserve every notice and message, and then place the credit protections that fit your risk.

Do these things first
- Secure your FEMA identifiers. Store your application number and nine-digit FEMA registration ID somewhere private. Do not post them, read them to an unverified caller, or give them to a visitor whose identity you have not confirmed.
- Use an official verification route. For a suspicious call, text, email, letter or visit, contact FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 using a number you obtained from official FEMA or USA.gov information. Do not call a number supplied only in the suspicious message.
- Refuse payment requests. FEMA states that federal and local disaster workers do not ask for or accept money. A request for a fee, gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency is a fraud warning.
- Do not disclose extra personal data. An unverified person should not receive your documents, full Social Security number, bank details, income information or insurance records.
- Check for unauthorized activity. Review bank and card transactions, email and phone-account notices, and your credit reports. Move quickly if you see a disaster-assistance application, account or inquiry you did not initiate.
How legitimate FEMA contact differs from impersonation
FEMA’s 2025 guidance says the agency will call or email only when you have contacted FEMA first or registered for assistance. That does not mean every contact after an application is automatically genuine; it means you should be able to connect the contact to your application and independently verify it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Check | Legitimate contact | Impersonation warning |
|---|---|---|
| Who initiated the conversation? | Follows your contact with FEMA or your registration for assistance and can be verified through the official helpline. | Unexpected outreach claiming you must act immediately, especially when you never contacted FEMA. |
| Is money requested? | No payment is required to receive disaster assistance or an inspection. | Any demand for money, a fee, gift card, wire, cryptocurrency or “processing” payment. |
| What information is requested? | Information connected to your application may be requested through an official process or letter. | Requests for a full Social Security number, banking credentials, income details or document copies from an unverified person. |
| What identification is shown? | FEMA personnel and inspectors carry official photo identification. | A FEMA shirt, jacket, badge-looking item or vehicle by itself proves nothing. |
| What is the safe next step? | End the conversation and confirm the contact through 1-800-621-3362. | Do not click links, call back the supplied number or share the nine-digit registration ID until FEMA confirms the person and purpose. |
FEMA clothing is not proof of identity. If an inspector comes to your home, ask to see official photo identification and independently verify the visit. You can decline to hand documents to a person whose identity you cannot confirm while you contact FEMA.

What information your application contains
A federal disaster-assistance application can require a Social Security number, insurance information, annual household income, contact details, a description of the damage and bank-account information when you choose direct deposit. Each item can be useful to a criminal, so treat the complete application as sensitive financial information.
Protect the nine-digit registration ID
The registration ID is issued after you apply and helps FEMA locate your file. It is not a password, but an impostor may use it to sound credible. Do not publish it or provide it to a caller, texter or visitor until FEMA confirms the contact. Keep the application number and related letters with your other identity records.
Use only official application channels
USA.gov identifies four official ways to apply: DisasterAssistance.gov, the FEMA mobile app, the telephone application route and a Disaster Recovery Center. A link or phone number delivered by an unsolicited message is not automatically one of those routes. Navigate to an official government site yourself or ask FEMA to confirm the channel before entering information.

What normally happens after a genuine application
A real application can move through several ordinary stages. FEMA may review the information, arrange an inspection, request supporting information by official letter and then send a decision letter. The decision letter explains whether assistance is approved, the amount, permitted use of the money and your appeal rights.
Application review
Review can involve your identity, residence, damage description, insurance and other eligibility details. A request that arrives through an official letter or a contact FEMA confirms may be part of this review. Do not assume that an urgent text or an unexpected web form is legitimate simply because it mentions a real disaster.
Inspection
An inspection may be scheduled when FEMA needs to verify damage. Inspectors carry official photo identification. Verify the appointment through FEMA before allowing access, and do not treat a FEMA-branded shirt or jacket as sufficient identification.

Requests and decision letters
Keep copies of letters, forms, photographs, receipts and messages related to the claim. A decision letter should identify the determination, amount, permitted use and appeal rights. If a notice refers to an application you never made, treat it as possible identity theft rather than as a routine request.

Act as soon as you receive an inspection request, notice or other indication that an application exists without your permission.
- Tell the inspector or FEMA representative clearly: “I did not apply for this assistance.” Do not sign forms or provide additional sensitive information to an unverified person.
- Ask FEMA to stop processing the fraudulent application. Contact the FEMA helpline at 1-800-621-3362 or ask for the Fraud Branch. Use an independently obtained official number.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the notice, envelope, caller’s name and number, dates and times, email headers, text messages, screenshots and copies of anything you sent. Write down what the person claimed and what information was requested.
- Confirm the correction. Ask what happens next, how to identify the fraudulent file and how to submit proof that you did not apply. Record the representative’s instructions and any reference number.
- Apply legitimately if you still need assistance. FEMA can help create a valid application after the fraudulent one is stopped. Do not abandon needed relief merely because an impostor used your information.
Do not try to “take over” the fraudulent application or send more information to make it look legitimate. The priority is to stop processing, document the impersonation and establish a clean application record.

Should you freeze your credit or place a fraud alert?
Both protections are free, but they work differently. A freeze is the stronger preventive step when you believe a Social Security number may be misused. An alert asks businesses to take additional steps to verify identity before opening new credit.
| Feature | Credit freeze | Initial fraud alert | Extended fraud alert |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can place it? | Anyone, for any reason. | Anyone who wants an extra identity check. | Identity-theft victims who meet the qualifying requirements. |
| Cost | Free. | Free. | Free. |
| How long it lasts | Until you lift it. | One year. | Seven years for eligible identity-theft victims. |
| Can prospective creditors access your report? | No, while the freeze is active, so new creditors generally cannot open an account using the report. | Yes, but businesses are told to verify your identity before opening new credit. | Yes, with the longer verification warning. |
| How do you set it up? | Contact Equifax, Experian and TransUnion separately and place a freeze with each bureau. | Contact one bureau; it must notify the other two. | Follow the bureau’s identity-theft documentation process. |
| What happens when you apply for new credit? | You must temporarily lift the freeze or give a creditor the access process required by the bureau. | The lender may contact you or take additional steps to confirm that you made the application. | The lender uses the extended alert’s verification procedures. |
When a freeze makes sense
The Federal Trade Commission says a credit freeze is something you can do anytime, for any reason. It does not affect your credit score and remains until you lift it. Because it blocks prospective creditors from accessing your report, it is the more restrictive choice when your Social Security number may have been exposed or used in a fraudulent FEMA application.

When an alert may be enough
An initial fraud alert lasts one year. Contacting one bureau causes that bureau to notify the other two, so you do not have to make three separate requests. The alert does not block access to your report; it tells businesses to verify that the applicant is really you.
An extended alert can last seven years for identity-theft victims. It is designed for people who have experienced identity theft and may require supporting documentation. Follow the bureau’s instructions and retain confirmation of the alert.
If other identity fraud appears
A fraudulent disaster-assistance application may be the only misuse, or it may be one sign that your personal information is circulating. If you find an unfamiliar account, inquiry or transaction, take these steps in order:
- Contact the affected company’s fraud department. Use the company’s independently obtained contact information, not a number in a suspicious message. Ask the company to close or freeze the account and explain what documents it needs.
- Change passwords and PINs. Start with email, banking, payment, mobile-carrier and government-service accounts. Use unique passwords and change any reused credential.
- Place a fraud alert or credit freeze. Choose the protection based on whether you need to block new-credit access or simply require additional verification.
- Obtain your credit reports. Look for unfamiliar accounts, hard inquiries, addresses and collection activity. Save copies and note the date you reviewed each report.
- Report the theft at IdentityTheft.gov. Based on the information you enter, the Federal Trade Commission’s site creates an Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan.
- Follow through with each creditor. Dispute accounts you did not open, ask for written confirmation of closure and keep a dated file of every call and submission.
Where to report disaster-related fraud
FEMA

National Center for Disaster Fraud
FEMA’s Emergency Financial First Aid Kit lists the National Center for Disaster Fraud hotline: 866-720-5721. Use it to report disaster-related fraud in addition to notifying FEMA and the FTC when the circumstances warrant.

- Stopping after closing one fraudulent account: Continue with credit-report review, password changes, alerts or freezes and the FTC recovery plan.
