Compare the account’s variable annual percentage yield (APY), fees, minimums, transfer speed and withdrawal rules rather than chasing a headline rate. No cash arrangement guarantees that purchasing power will beat inflation in every period.

What an emergency fund is supposed to do
An emergency fund is cash reserved for unplanned bills or an interruption in income. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes it as money set aside for financial shocks and notes that the right amount depends on your circumstances and past expenses. A household with variable income, one earner, chronic medical costs or an older car may need a different reserve from a dual-income household with unusually stable expenses.
Because the fund’s first job is availability, the account should be usable when a deductible, repair, urgent trip or missed paycheck arrives. Inflation protection is a secondary objective. If you lock up the money or expose the principal to market losses, you can defeat the purpose of the reserve.

Start by reviewing several months of essential spending and known income risks. Include bills that do not arrive every month, such as insurance premiums, annual fees or predictable vehicle maintenance. Use that information to define a target range, then divide the target by access need:
- Immediate-access core: money that might be needed today or this week.
- Delayed-access reserve: money that is still part of your emergency plan but can remain untouched for a year or more.
Do not place the second category in an account that you would have to raid for an ordinary short-term bill. If every dollar could be needed quickly, keep the entire fund liquid. A target is not a permanent number: a job change, new dependent, move, debt payment or change in essential expenses can make a previously adequate reserve too small.
Keep the core in an insured deposit account
A savings account or bank money market deposit account (MMDA) at an institution with applicable federal insurance is generally the starting point for the liquid portion. CFPB explains that qualifying deposits are protected against a bank or credit-union failure up to applicable limits, but insurance depends on the institution, product and ownership category. The commonly cited limit is $250,000 for the stated account-holder coverage; ownership and aggregation rules determine how coverage applies. Confirm your coverage with the bank’s FDIC information or the credit union’s NCUA information instead of multiplying the limit by the number of accounts.

When checking coverage, identify the legal institution holding the funds, the exact product name and the ownership category shown in the account agreement. Ask how balances in other accounts at the same institution are counted. Keep a copy of the institution’s insurance disclosures and your balance records, especially if your total approaches an applicable limit.
An insured deposit is not the same as every product that uses the words “money market.” CFPB distinguishes a bank money market deposit account from a money market mutual fund: the latter is an investment, not a savings or checking deposit account, and is not an FDIC- or NCUA-insured deposit. Read the legal product name and account disclosures before transferring emergency cash.
Account features to compare
| Comparison | What to verify | Why it matters for emergencies |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance and ownership | Whether the institution and account are covered by FDIC or NCUA insurance, and how your ownership category is aggregated | Insurance addresses institutional failure, subject to the applicable rules and limits. |
| Access method | Debit card, electronic transfer, bill pay, branch or wire availability; cutoff times and expected delivery | A high rate is not useful if funds cannot arrive before a bill is due. |
| Transfer and withdrawal rules | Any limits, holds, waiting periods or fees for outgoing transfers and withdrawals | Restrictions can force you to use expensive credit during a crisis. |
| Fees and minimum balance | Monthly fees, overdraft charges, minimum opening or ongoing balances, and conditions for waivers | Fees reduce the reserve and can erase a modest yield advantage. |
| Yield and rate behavior | Current APY, whether it is variable, and how the institution can change it | A variable rate can fall, and a quoted APY is not a promise that the account will outpace inflation. |
CFPB’s consumer guidance on bank and credit-union accounts explains why an account can provide a safer place to hold cash and why access and insurance details matter. Review the institution’s current disclosures at account opening and whenever terms change.
Access should be measured, not assumed. Initiate a small outbound transfer, note the time of day and any cutoff, and record when the money actually arrives in the destination account. Check whether a new payee, external account or large transfer triggers a hold. This test is more useful than relying on a marketing statement that funds are “available online.”
Understand the inflation trade-off
Inflation reduces what a fixed dollar balance can buy. CFPB’s National Standards for Personal Financial Education states: “Inflation can erode the value of savings if the interest rate earned on a savings account is less than the inflation rate.” An insured deposit protects against the institution failing; it does not guarantee that the balance will maintain purchasing power.

Deposit rates are usually variable. When market rates or the institution’s pricing changes, your APY may change without you moving the money. Compare APY over the same time period as the inflation measure you are using, and treat any gap as the cost of immediate access and principal stability. A temporary rate above inflation does not establish a permanent advantage, while a rate below inflation does not make the account unsafe; it means the reserve is losing real purchasing power while it waits.
Use the rate as one input rather than the decision itself. A slightly lower APY with no monthly fee, dependable transfers and clear insurance may leave more usable money than a higher advertised APY that requires a balance you cannot maintain or charges for withdrawals. Conversely, if two insured accounts offer comparable access and fees, reviewing the current APY can improve the reserve’s purchasing-power trade-off.
Check the account on a regular schedule and after major changes in interest rates. Recheck fees, minimums and transfer times at the same time. Moving to another insured account can improve the trade-off, but do not close the existing account until the replacement is open, verified and tested with a small transfer.

Use Series I bonds only for money that can stay untouched
Series I savings bonds adjust their interest rate for inflation. TreasuryDirect’s official description says, “The interest rate on a Series I savings bond changes every 6 months, based on inflation.” That adjustment can help a long-term cash reserve respond to rising prices, but an I bond is not an immediate-access emergency account.
Access rules come before the rate
- You cannot redeem an I bond during the first 12 months after purchase.
- If you redeem it before you have held it for five years, you forfeit the last three months of interest.
- The inflation component resets every six months, so a rate quoted for one issue period is not a forecast or a permanent return.
These rules make an I bond unsuitable for the core amount that might be needed at once. It can be considered for a separately tracked secondary reserve only when your liquid account already covers plausible short-term shocks and you can tolerate the 12-month lock. The three-month interest penalty is a further cost if you need to sell before five years.
Think of the holding as “available later,” not as part of the balance you can spend today. Maintain a record of each purchase date, the first eligible redemption date and the five-year date at which the early-redemption penalty no longer applies. If a potential emergency could occur before the first date, that money should not be assigned to the delayed reserve.
What the published 2026 rate means
| Issue period | Composite annual rate | Fixed-rate component | Inflation component included |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 1 through October 31, 2026 | 4.26% | 0.90% | 3.34% annualized, based on the CPI-U change for the six months through March 2026 |
The 4.26% figure is the U.S. Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service rate for bonds issued in that six-month window. It combines the fixed rate with an inflation calculation and can change when the inflation component resets. It is not directly comparable with a deposit APY unless you align the measurement periods and account for the very different access terms. Do not buy solely because this particular rate is higher than a quoted savings rate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The rate also does not tell you what a bond purchased in a different issue period will earn. Date any comparison, distinguish the fixed and inflation components, and read the current redemption terms before buying. A bond’s inflation adjustment can support a delayed reserve, but it cannot remove the need for a liquid account.

A practical two-part setup
The following is an example structure, not a prescribed percentage or personal recommendation.
Part one: the liquid core
- List essential monthly outflows, current income sources and the events most likely to create a sudden bill.
- Choose an FDIC- or NCUA-insured savings account or MMDA whose transfer method can deliver funds within the time your obligations require.
- Confirm the ownership category and insurance coverage in writing. If balances across accounts could exceed the applicable limit, ask the institution how they are aggregated.
- Test an outbound transfer before an emergency. Record the amount, initiation cutoff and arrival time.
- Keep enough in the core to cover the shocks you would realistically need to pay immediately. Do not reduce it merely to obtain a higher rate elsewhere.
- Write down the account, transfer instructions and customer-service contact in a place you can access if your usual phone or computer is unavailable.
Part two: an optional delayed reserve
- Only after the core is adequate, identify money that can remain unavailable for at least 12 months.
- If you use I bonds, track each purchase date so you know when redemption becomes possible and when the five-year penalty ends.
- Keep a separate record of the bond balance and do not count it as same-day cash.
- Reassess your income, expenses and access needs before adding more. A job change, move, new dependent or debt payment can make delayed funds inappropriate.
- After any withdrawal from the liquid core, restore the immediate-access amount before directing additional money to a locked product.
When a different choice is safer
Your income is unstable
Freelancers, commission workers and seasonal employees may face a longer gap between an income shock and replacement income. In that case, prioritize a larger liquid core rather than shifting more money into a locked product. The right target depends on the person’s expenses and risk, so a generic “three months” or “six months” rule should not override your cash-flow analysis.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Your likely emergency is immediate
If you have a medical procedure, lease payment, insurance deductible or essential repair that could require funds soon, use the account with the shortest reliable access time. An I bond purchased today cannot solve a bill due next month because of the 12-month redemption prohibition.
Your balance is near insurance limits
Ask the institution how your accounts are categorized and aggregated for insurance. Coverage is based on the applicable ownership rules, not simply on having several account numbers. Keep documentation of the institution, ownership category and covered balance.
You are considering a money market mutual fund
Do not substitute a money market mutual fund for an insured deposit account without understanding the difference. CFPB describes the mutual fund as an investment rather than a deposit account. Its product structure, protections and access mechanics are different, so it should not be labeled FDIC- or NCUA-insured.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Chasing a rate without checking access: Read transfer holds, cutoff times and withdrawal limits first. Correct the mistake by testing the route with a small transfer.
- Assuming “money market” means insured cash: Confirm whether the legal product is a deposit account or a mutual fund.
- Counting an I bond as available cash: Mark the first 12 months on your calendar and exclude that balance from same-day emergency resources.
- Ignoring the early-redemption penalty: If a bond is sold before five years, include the loss of the last three months of interest in your decision.
- Treating a published rate as permanent: Date the rate and note whether it is variable or tied to a six-month I bond reset.
- Assuming insurance covers every similarly named product: Verify the institution, product type and ownership category through current disclosures.
- Letting fees silently consume the reserve: Review monthly charges and balance requirements; a lower-fee account can preserve more money even when its advertised APY is not the highest.
- Putting the entire reserve in one inaccessible place: Separate immediate needs from money that can wait, and keep the immediate portion in a tested liquid account.
- Failing to update the target: Recalculate after a change in income, household size, debt or essential expenses instead of relying on an old balance.
How to review the plan over time
Set a recurring review at least when your income, household, debt, insurance or essential expenses change. During the review, recalculate the target from current spending, confirm the account’s insurance and ownership classification, compare the current APY and fees, and retest transfer timing if the institution has changed its systems or terms.
Also check the date and terms of any I bond holdings. The inflation component can change every six months, and the bond’s access status changes as it passes the 12-month and five-year milestones. Keep a written distinction between “available now” and “available later” so a spreadsheet balance does not create a false sense of liquidity.

When reviewing, ask four practical questions: Could I pay the most likely urgent bill today? Do I know exactly how long a transfer takes? Is the product still an insured deposit rather than a similarly named investment? Is any delayed money genuinely surplus to the immediate target? If an answer changes, adjust the structure before a crisis occurs.

How much should I keep in an emergency fund?
There is no universal amount. CFPB says the appropriate target depends on your circumstances and past expenses. Use essential outflows and income risks to set a range, then decide how much must be available immediately. Avoid letting a generic month-count rule override your actual cash-flow needs.
Can an insured savings account guarantee protection from inflation?
No. Insurance addresses bank or credit-union failure, while inflation affects purchasing power. If the account’s interest rate is below inflation, the balance may buy less over time even though the principal is protected against an insured institutional failure.
Is a money market account the same as a money market mutual fund?
No. A bank money market deposit account is a deposit product that may qualify for applicable insurance. CFPB describes a money market mutual fund as an investment, not a savings or checking deposit account. Check the legal product name and disclosures.
Does the $250,000 insurance amount apply separately to every account?
Not automatically. Coverage depends on the institution, ownership category and aggregation rules. Ask the bank or credit union how all relevant balances are counted instead of multiplying the limit by the number of account numbers.
When can I use an I bond for an emergency?
You cannot redeem one during the first 12 months after purchase. Redemption before five years forfeits the last three months of interest. Therefore, count an I bond only as delayed reserve money until it is eligible and suitable for your plan.
What is the I bond rate for May through October 2026?
Treasury lists a 4.26% composite annual rate for bonds issued May 1 through October 31, 2026, including a 0.90% fixed rate and a 3.34% annualized inflation component based on the CPI-U change through March 2026. The inflation component resets every six months, so this is issue-period information, not a permanent forecast.

How can I tell whether a higher APY is worth switching accounts?
Compare the APYs over the same period and then weigh fees, minimum balances, transfer speed, holds, withdrawal rules and insurance. Test the replacement account with a small transfer before closing the old one. A headline rate is not useful if access fails when a bill is due.
Bottom line
Protect purchasing power without taking excessive risk by protecting access first: hold the immediately needed reserve in a confirmed FDIC- or NCUA-insured deposit account, then compare variable APY, fees and transfer rules. Consider I bonds only for surplus emergency money that can remain untouched for at least a year, and account for the three-month interest penalty before five years. Inflation protection is useful, but no low-risk cash vehicle promises to outpace inflation continuously.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I keep in an emergency fund?
There is no universal amount. Base the target on essential expenses, income stability and likely financial shocks, then separate money needed immediately from money that can wait.
Are I bonds a replacement for a savings account?
No. I bonds cannot be redeemed during the first 12 months, and redemption before five years forfeits the last three months of interest. They are only a possible secondary reserve.
Is a money market mutual fund FDIC-insured?
No. CFPB distinguishes it from a bank money market deposit account; a mutual fund is an investment rather than an insured deposit.
What does the 4.26% I bond rate mean?
It is the composite annual rate for bonds issued May 1 through October 31, 2026, including a 0.90% fixed component and a 3.34% annualized inflation component. The inflation component changes every six months.
Does deposit insurance prevent inflation losses?
No. Insurance protects qualifying deposits against institutional failure within applicable limits. If the account rate is below inflation, purchasing power can still decline.
