The safest rule is simple: never let another person use your bank account to receive, withdraw, convert or forward money. A request may be presented as a job, prize, grant, investment, online-romance gesture or easy-money opportunity, but your account can still be used to move criminal proceeds. Refuse the transaction, do not share your login or card details, and contact your bank through an official channel if unexpected money appears.
If money has already arrived or moved, stop further transfers, stop communicating with the person who directed you, notify every bank or payment service involved and report the matter in your jurisdiction. Acting quickly can limit additional loss, although a completed wire or gift-card payment may be difficult or impossible to recover.

What a money mule account is
A money mule is a person whose financial account or other access is used to move money obtained through crime. The person may knowingly participate, or may be deceived, manipulated or coerced without realizing that the funds are stolen. A “money mule account” can be an ordinary current account, a newly opened account, a digital-wallet or cryptocurrency account, or an account that someone else has gained access to.

The account is useful to criminals because moving funds through another person can obscure where the money came from. The requested action may be to receive a deposit and send it onward, withdraw cash for collection, buy cryptocurrency for someone else, or purchase gift cards and pass along the redemption codes. The fact that a payment appears in your balance does not make it legitimate.

The National Crime Agency’s plain warning is: “Be suspicious of anyone asking to use your account or offering easy money.” The Federal Trade Commission gives an equally direct instruction: “If someone sends you money and asks you to send it to someone else, STOP.”
How people are recruited
Fake jobs and business assignments
A recruiter may claim that you will be a payment processor, purchasing agent, payroll assistant, local representative or “finance manager.” The work consists mainly of receiving money into your personal account and transferring it to a different account, wire service, cryptocurrency wallet or gift-card issuer. A legitimate employer should not require an employee to use a personal account as a pass-through for company funds.
Online romance and friendship
Someone met through a dating site, social network or messaging app may say that they are travelling, locked out of an account or unable to receive a payment. They may ask you to accept a deposit and send part of it elsewhere. Emotional pressure, promises of a future together and urgent explanations do not change the risk.

A supposed prize or grant may require you to deposit a check, pay a fee, forward a portion, or buy gift cards and provide the codes. The fee is often described as tax, insurance, delivery or verification. If the money is real, the organizer should not need your account to route it to an unknown person.
Checks that appear to clear
A fraudulent check can show as available in your account before the bank finishes determining whether it is genuine. If you send money against that balance, the bank can later remove the deposit. You may have to repay the full amount, pay fees or deal with an overdraft or account closure. “Available” funds are not proof that a check is authentic.

Account access and cash collection
Criminals may ask for your online-banking password, one-time code, debit card, PIN or remote access to your device. In other cases, they ask you to withdraw cash or buy cryptocurrency on their behalf. Lending the account, even briefly, gives another person a way to move funds in your name and can make it harder to explain what happened.
Warning signs that a request is unsafe
| What you are asked to do | Why it is a red flag | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Receive money and send it to a different person or account | You are being used as a transfer layer rather than paid for a genuine service. | Decline, leave the conversation and contact your bank if money has already arrived. |
| Deposit a check, keep a percentage and return the rest | The check may be counterfeit and the bank can reverse it later. | Do not spend or forward any funds; ask the bank to review the deposit. |
| Buy gift cards and send redemption codes | Codes can be redeemed rapidly and are difficult to recover. | Do not buy them. If you already did, contact the issuer and your bank immediately. |
| Wire money, purchase cryptocurrency or withdraw cash for someone else | These methods can move proceeds quickly and obscure their source. | Refuse and do not let the person direct your financial activity. |
| Share your login, card, PIN or security code | The other person can transact as you and may lock you out. | Never share credentials; change compromised credentials through the bank’s official process. |
| Open an account for an employer, client or online contact | The account may be created specifically to receive illicit funds. | Use only accounts you control for your own legitimate activity. |
| Act immediately or keep the arrangement secret | Urgency and secrecy prevent you from checking the story independently. | Pause, verify through an independent channel and seek advice before doing anything. |
How to protect your account before anything happens
Set a personal rule about account use
Decide that your account will receive money only for your own wages, benefits, sales, reimbursements and other transactions you can explain. Do not make exceptions for a person you met online or for a purported employer. A promise of a commission does not transfer responsibility for the payment through your account.

- Do not disclose your username, password, debit-card number, PIN, one-time authentication code or security answers.
- Do not give another person remote access to your phone or computer for “bank verification.”
- Use the bank’s official app or a phone number printed on your card when checking a message or payment.
- If you suspect that credentials were exposed, change them using the bank’s genuine website or app and ask what account protections or closure steps are required.
Verify jobs and payment requests independently
Contact a prospective employer through a website or telephone number you found independently, not through details supplied in an unsolicited message. Ask why a personal account is required, who legally owns the funds and what written controls govern the payment. A request that cannot survive basic verification is not worth the risk.
Pause unexpected deposits
If an unfamiliar payment appears, do not return it to a new account, withdraw it, spend it or follow the sender’s instructions. Do not assume that sending it back to a different account is harmless; that can create another transfer for investigators to examine. Contact your bank through its established channel and ask how it wants the payment handled.
Protect personal information
Strong passwords, multifactor authentication, software updates and careful control of identity documents can reduce unauthorized account opening and account takeover. These measures do not make it safe to act as someone else’s payment intermediary, and no particular security product is required to follow the core prevention rule.

Legitimate payment versus a mule request
| Question | Lower-risk legitimate arrangement | High-risk mule pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Who initiated contact? | You have an established relationship and can verify the organization independently. | An unsolicited online contact, recruiter or romantic interest approaches you. |
| Whose account receives the money? | Payment goes directly to the person or business that earned it. | Your personal account receives money belonging to someone else. |
| What happens next? | You keep records for your own sale, wages or service. | You must forward, withdraw, convert or redeem funds for another person. |
| What is the explanation? | The purpose, payer and recipient are documented and make commercial sense. | The explanation is a prize, romance, urgent favor, secret job or easy commission. |
| Can you say no? | Refusing does not trigger threats or penalties. | You are pressured to act immediately, keep silent or pay a fee. |
No single sign proves that a transaction is criminal. Several of these features together, however, should be treated as a reason to stop rather than investigate by moving more money.

What to do when suspicious money arrives
- Do not touch the funds. Do not spend, withdraw, transfer, convert or “refund” them based on the sender’s instructions. Leave the balance unchanged while the bank investigates.
- Stop the conversation. Do not argue with or warn the recruiter. Preserve messages, email addresses, phone numbers, payment notices and transaction details, then stop responding.
- Call the bank using an official channel. Use the number on your card, a statement or the bank’s verified app. Explain that an unexpected payment is connected to a request to move money and ask for written instructions.
- Tell every payment provider involved. If a wire service, gift-card issuer, digital wallet or cryptocurrency exchange was used, report the transaction immediately. Give the provider the transaction number and the recipient details.
- Secure the account. Ask whether the bank should block transfers, replace a card, reset credentials, add a fraud alert or close the account. If the other person obtained your account information, Federal Trade Commission guidance issued in 2021 advises closing the account immediately.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the original messages and receipts rather than editing screenshots. Record dates, amounts, account numbers, wallet addresses and the names used by the contact.
- Report in the correct jurisdiction. Reporting does not guarantee that money will be recovered, but it helps the bank and authorities connect related transactions.
US reporting and recovery steps
For readers in the United States, the Federal Trade Commission advises stopping the transaction and communication, notifying the bank or payment company, and reporting the scam through ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Use the provider’s fraud process as soon as possible for a wire, gift-card purchase or other transfer. Gift-card and wire payments can be difficult or almost impossible to recover, so do not wait for the person to provide a new explanation.
If a check was deposited, tell the bank that you believe it may be fraudulent and ask what amount must remain untouched. Do not assume that the initial credit is final. The depositor can be responsible for repayment and associated charges even when the check looked genuine at first.
UK reporting and safeguarding routes
The National Crime Agency directs fraud victims in the UK to Action Fraud. People in Scotland should use Police Scotland’s route for fraud reporting. A situation requiring an immediate police response should be reported by calling 999. If you suspect that someone is recruiting others into money muling, the NCA guidance also identifies local police and Crimestoppers options. Check the current instructions before reporting because agencies can change their procedures.
The UK Home Office action plan discussed here covers England and Wales and notes that policing policy is devolved in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Do not assume that an England-and-Wales procedure applies elsewhere in the UK; follow the relevant local authority’s current direction.

When the account holder may be a victim
An account connected to suspicious transfers does not by itself prove that the account holder knowingly agreed to launder money. The Home Office describes people being coerced, manipulated, deceived or exploited, including children and adults at risk. Banks may have difficulty distinguishing a willing participant from a victim when they first see unusual activity.
Frontline guidance lists possible indicators of exploitation: unexplained large deposits, sudden changes to banking arrangements, new bank or cryptocurrency accounts, increased secrecy about finances, altered cash use or ATM withdrawals, an unexpected account closure, difficulty opening accounts, and unusually frequent letters from banks or debt collectors. These signs are not specific to money-mule exploitation and should not be treated as a diagnostic checklist.
If a young person or an adult at risk is involved, prioritize safety and involve an appropriate safeguarding professional or local authority. Do not confront a suspected exploiter if doing so could increase danger. The person may need coordinated support from banking, law-enforcement and social-care services rather than blame.
Financial and legal consequences
Reversals, debt and account restrictions
A counterfeit check can be reversed after you have sent away real money. You may owe the bank the deposit, incur overdraft fees and lose access to the account. Banks can also close accounts or restrict services when activity cannot be explained. These consequences can occur even when the original request was presented as harmless.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLegal exposure
US consumer guidance warns that moving stolen money can create legal trouble even if the person did not realize it was stolen. The facts, intent and applicable law determine what happens; do not assume that saying “I did not know” automatically resolves the matter.

In the UK context covered by the Home Office action plan, money muling is treated as a form of money laundering. The plan states a maximum sentence of up to 14 years for the relevant offence. That is a UK-specific maximum, not a universal penalty, and it does not mean that every person whose account is misused receives that sentence. The same plan describes possible long-term difficulty accessing banking, credit and other services for people knowingly and willingly involved.
What recent UK evidence can—and cannot—tell you
A 2026 Home Office study used a survey of 208 respondents, interviews with nine former money mules and interviews with 11 subject-matter experts. Those figures describe the study’s sample and methods; they are not an estimate of how common money-mule recruitment is in the general population. The findings are useful for understanding lived experience and professional observations, but they should not be turned into a percentage risk for an individual account holder.
A practical refusal script
You do not need to prove that a request is a crime before refusing it. A short response is enough: “I do not receive or transfer money for other people. Please do not send anything to my account.” If funds have already arrived, do not negotiate a return payment. Say that your bank is handling the matter, save the conversation and end contact.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep a percentage if someone asks me to forward money?
No. Keeping a commission does not make the arrangement legitimate. Receiving and forwarding money for another person can make your account part of a criminal transfer, and you may still owe the bank if the original payment is reversed.
Should I send an unexpected payment back to the sender?
Do not follow the sender’s instructions or send the money to a different account. Leave it untouched and ask your bank, through an official channel, how it wants the payment handled.
What if I did not know the money was stolen?
Lack of knowledge does not automatically remove financial or legal risk. Tell the bank and the relevant reporting authority exactly what happened, preserve the messages and stop further transfers. Authorities should consider whether you were deceived, coerced or exploited.
Can a bank close my account after suspicious activity?
It can restrict or close an account when transactions cannot be explained. A fake check can also lead to repayment obligations, fees, an overdraft or account closure.
