An inheritance message can be fake, and pressure from a relative or caregiver can be financial exploitation. Protect the money by pausing every unexpected request, verifying people and institutions through contact details you find independently, securing accounts, preserving records, and reporting suspected abuse promptly. Warning signs justify attention but do not, by themselves, prove that a crime occurred.

Estate, probate, property, power-of-attorney, and debt rules differ by state. If anyone disputes a will, deed, beneficiary change, transfer, or authority to act for an estate, obtain advice from a licensed attorney who handles those matters in the relevant jurisdiction.

Start here: a five-minute response to an inheritance request

If a letter, email, text, call, or in-person request concerns an inheritance, do not treat the sender’s story as established fact. Take these steps before sending money, sharing information, signing anything, or changing an account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the transaction. Do not pay a release fee, withdraw cash, transfer funds, buy gift cards, send cryptocurrency, or provide a password or one-time code while the request is being checked.
  2. Save the evidence. Keep the original message, envelope, caller ID, phone number, email headers when available, payment instructions, and a timeline of conversations. Do not edit screenshots.
  3. Verify independently. Find the purported court, insurer, law firm, bank, government agency, executor, or company yourself. Use an official website or a phone number from a statement or other trusted record, not a link or number supplied in the message.
  4. Secure exposed accounts. Contact the bank or credit union through a verified channel, explain what happened, and ask what account protections, holds, recalls, or reporting options may be available. Change compromised credentials using a device and contact route you trust.
  5. Bring in an independent person. Ask a trusted contact who is not involved in the request to review it with you. If an older adult may be in danger or under pressure, prioritize safety and use the reporting routes below.

These actions are useful whether the sender is a stranger or someone you know. They create time to distinguish a legitimate estate matter from an attempt to obtain money, Social Security information, bank details, account access, or identity information.

How inheritance scams usually begin

An unexpected “unclaimed inheritance” notice

A letter or message may claim that a long-lost relative died, that an insurance benefit is waiting, or that a law firm, bank, or foreign official can release money after you pay a fee. The promised inheritance may be entirely fictional. The objective can be a wire payment, a check deposit followed by a request to return money, Social Security or bank information, a copy of identification, or access to an account.

Do not send money or sensitive information merely to “release” an inheritance. The Federal Trade Commission recommends reporting unexpected inheritance notices. Preserve the notice and verify the supposed insurer, law firm, executor, or court independently before taking any action. A legitimate organization should withstand a verification call made through its published, official contact route; a scammer will often insist that you use only the number, link, or email address in the message.

Impersonation of a relative, agency, or business

Impostors may claim to be a grandchild, attorney, bank employee, government investigator, delivery company, or estate representative. They may know a few real details, use a familiar voice, or spoof a telephone number. A convincing identity is not proof of a legitimate request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the person to pause while you contact the real institution or relative separately. Do not call back through a recent text, click the message’s link, or rely on caller ID. If a purported relative asks for secrecy, verify through another family member or a number already stored in your records. If a supposed institution asks you to “protect” money by moving it, treat that instruction as a danger sign.

“Know that the DOJ will never threaten you, say you must transfer your money to ‘protect it,’ or tell you to withdraw cash and give it to someone.”

The statement is from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Elder Justice Initiative. A real agency, bank, or court will not make an inheritance safer by directing you to hand cash to a stranger or move funds to an account selected by an unsolicited caller.

Warning signs and the safer response

Warning sign Why it matters Safer response
Urgency, a deadline, or a threat of arrest or forfeiture Pressure prevents independent checking. End the conversation and verify through an official channel you locate yourself.
Demand for secrecy Isolation makes a scam easier to complete. Tell a trusted, independent person and ask that person to review the request.
Request for a password, one-time code, Social Security number, bank login, or remote access Those details can enable account takeover or identity theft. Refuse to share them; contact the institution using a known official route.
Wire, cryptocurrency, gift card, prepaid card, cash, or payment-app demand These methods can be difficult to reverse or recover. Do not pay. Ask your bank what immediate steps are available if money was already sent.
Instructions to move money to “protect” it Moving funds can place them under the scammer’s control. Keep funds where they are until an independently verified professional explains the issue.
Unsolicited forms, links, or attachments requesting personal data They may install malware or harvest identity information. Do not open them; locate the organization’s official website or telephone number independently.

Protect an inheritance before money moves

Verify the legal and financial claim

Ask for the sender’s full name, organization, physical address, case or policy number, and a clear explanation of what action is requested. Treat those details as leads to check, not as proof. Search for the institution independently and compare contact details. For a court or estate, use the court’s official public contact information; for an insurer or bank, use a statement, card, or website that you already trust. Do not allow the sender to stay on the line while you “verify” using a link they supplied.

For a genuine estate matter, a local attorney can explain whether a document, fee, or signature is actually required. Probate procedures and filing practices are jurisdiction-specific, and an online notice cannot establish your legal rights.

Control access to accounts and devices

Use the bank or credit union’s independently verified phone number to report a suspicious request or an account detail that may have been exposed. Ask what protections are available, such as reviewing recent transactions, placing a temporary hold, replacing credentials, or documenting a fraud report. The institution decides which measures it can offer and whether a transfer can be stopped or recalled.

Never disclose a one-time verification code to a caller who initiated contact. If you clicked a suspicious link or installed remote-access software, disconnect the affected device from the internet and contact the relevant financial institutions from a different, trusted device. Keep a written record of when you called, whom you spoke with, and any case number provided.

Use a trusted contact without creating a new risk

A trusted contact can be part of a longer-term fraud-prevention plan: that person may notice unusual requests, help review statements, or encourage a pause before a large transfer. Choose someone independent of the person making the request and someone who will respect the recipient’s decisions. A trusted contact is not automatically authorized to withdraw money, change beneficiaries, sign documents, or make medical or legal decisions. Do not hand over control simply because someone offers to “help.”

Keep an inheritance trail

Store copies of the will or trust documents you are permitted to access, account statements, deeds, beneficiary designations, correspondence, and receipts in a secure location. Record dates, amounts, account names, and who authorized each transfer. If documents are held by an executor, trustee, or attorney, ask how you can obtain accurate copies and where the originals are kept. A clear record helps a bank, investigator, or lawyer determine what happened and when.

How can I tell if a friend, neighbor, or family member is a victim of financial exploitation?

Financial exploitation can be committed by a family member, caregiver, neighbor, professional, or stranger. The following are warning signs, not diagnoses or proof of a crime. Look for a pattern, listen to the older adult privately, and avoid assuming that a change in spending or documents is wrongful without understanding the person’s wishes and capacity.

Isolation and control

  • The person appears fearful around a relative or caregiver, or suddenly stops speaking with friends.
  • Someone insists on answering every question, blocks private conversations, screens calls, or controls mail and online accounts.
  • An accompanying person pressures the older adult to agree, sign, withdraw money, or keep a transaction secret.
  • The older adult’s explanation sounds rehearsed, inconsistent, or unlike the way they normally communicate.

Money and account changes

  • Bank statements, checks, cards, or identity documents are missing.
  • There are unexplained withdrawals, new payees, unusual transfers, large gifts, or rapid changes in spending.
  • A new signer, joint owner, beneficiary, or online user appears without a clear explanation.
  • Utilities, housing costs, taxes, or care bills go unpaid even though money should be available.

Documents and authority

  • A will, trust, deed, beneficiary designation, or power of attorney changes suddenly or under unusual circumstances.
  • A signature appears forged, or a document is presented without allowing the person time to read it or obtain advice.
  • Someone uses a power of attorney for personal benefit rather than for the person’s stated interests.
  • A relative, caregiver, or other helper threatens abandonment, eviction, loss of care, or other harm unless money or property is transferred.

Any one sign can have an innocent explanation. The concern grows when pressure, secrecy, missing records, and unexplained financial changes occur together. Ask open questions such as, “Can you tell me what this payment is for?” and “Would you like to review this with someone independent?” Do not promise confidentiality if the person faces immediate danger.

What to do when family pressure or exploitation is suspected

If there is immediate danger

Call emergency services when someone is being threatened, assaulted, confined, or is at immediate risk of losing essential shelter, medication, or care. Move the person to a safer setting if you can do so without escalating the danger. Do not confront a suspected abuser alone when that could put anyone at greater risk.

If the concern is serious but not an emergency

The DOJ identifies Adult Protective Services (APS) as a reporting route for suspected exploitation of an older adult by someone close to them. Depending on the circumstances, DOJ also identifies local law enforcement and the National Elder Fraud Hotline for financial fraud. Agency names, intake rules, and response times vary by location, so use the current contact information for the jurisdiction where the older adult lives.

When reporting, explain who may be involved, what was observed, dates and amounts, the older adult’s current safety, and whether access to accounts or documents may be changing. Provide copies of records when requested and keep the report number. A report is a request for assessment; it is not a finding that a crime occurred.

Notify the financial institution

Call the bank or credit union through a verified number, describe the suspicious activity, and ask what protections and reporting options are available. If a transfer is pending, say so immediately. Ask how to preserve statements, dispute unauthorized transactions, protect online access, and identify new signers or beneficiaries. Follow up in writing if the institution instructs you to do so, and retain every reference number.

Preserve evidence lawfully

Keep original messages, envelopes, call logs, transaction records, document versions, and notes of conversations. Do not alter files, impersonate another person to obtain records, or access an account without authorization. If you are unsure what you may lawfully copy, ask a local attorney or the institution’s fraud department. A dated chronology is often more useful than a pile of unorganized screenshots.

Choose the reporting route by situation

Situation First practical contact Additional step
Unexpected inheritance notice or impersonation by a stranger Financial institution if money or account information was exposed; report the notice to the FTC. Preserve the message and report financial fraud through the current official channel.
Suspected exploitation by a relative, caregiver, neighbor, or other trusted person Adult Protective Services in the older adult’s locality. Contact local police or sheriff when appropriate; DOJ also identifies the National Elder Fraud Hotline.
Immediate threat, violence, confinement, or loss of essential care Emergency services. Tell APS and law enforcement about the immediate safety concern when it is safe to do so.
Suspicious bank activity or compromised account access Bank or credit union through an independently verified contact route. Ask about holds, recalls, credential changes, monitoring, and the institution’s fraud-reporting process.
Disputed will, deed, beneficiary change, power of attorney, or estate transfer Licensed estate or elder-law attorney in the relevant jurisdiction. Preserve originals and records; do not sign a new document under pressure.

Do not accept a relative’s debt demand at face value

After someone dies, collectors may contact a spouse, executor, administrator, or another person authorized to pay from estate assets. That does not automatically mean the person contacted must pay the debt from personal funds. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2011 policy statement says collectors may communicate about estate debts with people authorized to handle estate assets and may not mislead someone into believing that person is personally obligated to pay when they are not.

That statement is older, and probate and debt-liability procedures vary by state and by the type of debt. Do not promise payment, sign an acknowledgment, transfer estate property, or use inherited funds solely because a collector demands it. Request the claim in writing, keep the caller’s details, and obtain current local legal advice about the estate’s obligations and your own potential liability.

Handling disputed documents and transfers

Wills, trusts, deeds, and beneficiary designations

A sudden change can be legitimate, but pressure, secrecy, incapacity concerns, forged signatures, or a beneficiary who arranged the change warrant prompt legal advice. Keep the date and version of each document, identify who was present, and note how it was delivered. Do not destroy an earlier original or attempt to “fix” the record yourself.

Powers of attorney

A power of attorney can authorize someone to act for another person, but the scope and duties depend on the document and applicable state law. A person using that authority for personal benefit, hiding statements, refusing to account for transactions, or pressuring the principal may be abusing it. A bank, APS investigator, or attorney can explain what review or protective action is available in the relevant jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Real estate and other asset transfers

Do not sign a deed, loan, account-ownership form, or settlement while someone is rushing you or preventing independent advice. Ask the recording office, financial institution, or attorney how to obtain a copy of the filed instrument and whether a corrective or protective process exists. Only local professionals can advise on deadlines, recording rules, remedies, and whether a transfer can be challenged.

A practical prevention plan for recipients and families

  1. Agree on a pause rule. Decide that any unexpected inheritance request or large transfer gets at least one independent verification call before action.
  2. Identify two independent contacts. Choose people who are not beneficiaries, caregivers, or advisers with a financial interest in the transaction. Tell the recipient exactly when they may be contacted.
  3. Turn on account notifications. Ask each financial institution what alerts are available for withdrawals, transfers, new payees, logins, or changes to contact information.
  4. Review records regularly. Compare statements with receipts and expected bills. Investigate missing mail, unexplained charges, or a new signer promptly.
  5. Keep documents organized. Maintain a current list of accounts, advisers, insurers, property, and where originals are stored, while limiting access to people who genuinely need it.
  6. Separate help from control. Assistance with transportation, online banking, or paperwork should not silently become ownership, unrestricted account access, or authority to change beneficiaries.
  7. Revisit the plan after major events. A move, diagnosis, death in the family, new caregiver, or large inheritance is a reason to review safeguards with an appropriate local professional.

Scripts for slowing down pressure

Short, neutral statements can create time without making an accusation:

  • “I do not make financial decisions during an unsolicited call. I will contact the institution using a number I already have.”
  • “I will not send a password, code, gift card, cryptocurrency, or cash. Put the request in writing.”
  • “We will review this document with an independent attorney before anyone signs.”
  • “I want to speak with you privately so I can understand what you want.”
  • “I am documenting this transaction and will ask the bank what protections are available.”

These scripts do not determine whether a request is lawful. They simply prevent an irreversible decision while facts, authority, and safety are checked.

The core rule

Time, independent verification, and a documented record are the strongest first defenses. Treat unexpected inheritance notices as unverified, treat urgent secrecy and hard-to-recover payments as warning signs, and take changes involving an older adult’s money or documents seriously without declaring guilt based on a single clue. Use the bank’s verified fraud channel, APS or law enforcement when exploitation is suspected, emergency services for immediate danger, and jurisdiction-specific legal advice for estate documents and debts.
