Protecting a large cash balance requires two separate plans. FDIC deposit insurance addresses the risk that an insured bank fails; it does not reimburse money stolen through a scam, account takeover, or unauthorized transfer. To protect yourself, verify the bank and account structure that determine insurance, then ask the bank to configure the strongest controls available for that specific account and act immediately if a transfer looks fraudulent.
The standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Balances in the same category at the same bank are added together, including accounts held at different branches. You may obtain more than $250,000 of coverage through qualifying ownership categories or separately insured banks, but simply opening more accounts at one bank does not multiply the limit. The steps below apply to U.S. consumers and U.S. federal guidance.

Start with the distinction: bank failure versus fraud
“Insured” does not mean “protected against every loss.” The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) states in its Deposit Insurance at a Glance brochure: “Deposit insurance coverage protects depositors against the failure of an insured bank; it does not protect against losses due to theft or fraud, which are addressed by other laws.”

| Risk | What addresses it | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Insured bank fails | FDIC insurance for qualifying deposits, subject to the applicable limit and ownership rules | Confirm the institution is FDIC-insured and calculate coverage for the exact ownership and product arrangement |
| A criminal or scammer obtains money from your account | Account-security controls, the bank’s investigation and applicable consumer-protection laws; FDIC insurance itself is not fraud insurance | Use available alerts and transfer safeguards, verify payment instructions independently, monitor activity and report suspected transactions immediately |
A large balance therefore needs both an insurance review and a fraud-prevention plan. Solving only one leaves the other risk exposed.

How the $250,000 FDIC limit applies
The FDIC’s standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, as explained in FDIC consumer guidance and the agency’s Understanding Deposit Insurance page, last updated April 1, 2024. Confirm the current limit before relying on it because insurance rules can change.
Balances in one category are combined
The FDIC combines all qualifying deposits you own in the same ownership category at the same insured bank. For example, if you have $180,000 in a checking account and $120,000 in a savings account in the same individual ownership category at one bank, the bank does not treat those as two separate $250,000 limits. The combined $300,000 is evaluated against one $250,000 limit, leaving $50,000 outside that limit.
Opening several accounts or moving money among branches of the same bank does not by itself create additional coverage. Separate branches are not separate insured banks for this calculation.

Additional coverage may be available when deposits are held in different qualifying ownership categories or at separately insured banks. Eligibility depends on how the account is owned and whether the FDIC’s requirements for that category are satisfied. A different account title, an extra debit card or a new branch is not enough on its own.
Do not assume that a brand, website or banking app represents a separate insured institution. Confirm the legal bank and its FDIC status. Two institutions that share a platform may or may not be separately insured; the insurance calculation follows the insured bank and ownership category, not the appearance of the user interface.

Which products are covered—and which are not
FDIC insurance is automatic for qualifying deposit accounts at an FDIC-insured bank. The FDIC identifies checking accounts, savings accounts, money market deposit accounts and certificates of deposit (CDs) as covered deposit types. The agency’s overview is available at FDIC Deposit Insurance.
A bank can also offer products that are not deposits. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds and annuities are investments, not FDIC-insured deposits merely because you purchased them through a bank or its affiliated service. Securities and investment products have different risks and protection regimes. Before counting an asset toward your insured cash total, identify exactly what the contract says the product is.
A five-step coverage check for a large balance
Complete this review for every institution where you keep substantial cash. Keep a copy of your statements and the account agreements you used so that your calculation can be recreated later.
- Confirm the legal institution. Search the bank in the FDIC’s BankFind tool or ask the institution for its FDIC-insured legal name. Check the bank itself, not only the brand name, mobile application or branch signage.
- Identify the product. Record whether each balance is a checking account, savings account, money market deposit account, CD or another product. Do not classify an investment as an insured deposit without confirming its terms.
- Record the ownership category. Note who legally owns each account and whether the account is individual, joint or another category recognized by FDIC rules. The category must be genuine and properly documented; relabeling an account does not create eligibility.
- Add deposits in the same category at that bank. Include every account and CD in that category, even if it is at another branch or has a different account number. Compare the total with the $250,000 standard limit.
- Run the arrangement through EDIE or ask the FDIC. The FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) can help calculate a specific arrangement. If the result is unclear, contact the FDIC or request a written explanation from the bank before moving the money.
The FDIC’s consumer pages at Deposit Insurance at a Glance and Understanding Deposit Insurance describe the categories and aggregation rules. A general rule of thumb is not a substitute for checking your actual ownership documents and balances.
Ways to organize more than $250,000
There is no single best structure. Compare coverage, legal eligibility, access to cash, and administrative burden before moving funds. Current interest rates, fees and account terms are institution-specific and are not established by the FDIC guidance cited here.

| Arrangement | Coverage implication | Access and operational considerations | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Several checking or savings accounts in one ownership category at one bank | Balances are combined under one category limit; extra account numbers do not automatically add coverage | Convenient access, but concentration remains and multiple statements can obscure the total | Aggregate every account and CD in that category |
| Qualifying accounts in different ownership categories at one bank | May provide separate limits when each category genuinely qualifies under FDIC rules | Ownership, documentation and tax or estate consequences can be more complex | Confirm category requirements and ownership records with the bank or FDIC |
| Deposits at separately insured banks | Each insured bank has its own limit for the same ownership category | Spreads operational risk but creates more logins, statements, transfer procedures and possible fees | Verify that the institutions are legally separate insured banks, not branches of one bank |
| Non-deposit investments offered through a bank | Not counted as FDIC-insured deposits merely because a bank distributes them | May provide market exposure or different liquidity, but values can fluctuate and access rules differ | Read the product contract and identify the protection that actually applies |
Do not move money solely to create a theoretical coverage amount if doing so makes the account difficult to monitor or increases the chance of a mistaken transfer. A structure that you cannot reconcile each month is a fraud risk as well as an insurance-management problem.
Ask the bank to harden the account against unauthorized transfers
Controls differ by bank, account type, customer profile and transfer method. The official guidance does not establish that any particular feature is available to every customer, so ask the bank what it can enable for your exact account and how each control works.
Transaction alerts and monitoring
- Ask whether the bank can send immediate alerts for outgoing wires, ACH transactions, large debit-card purchases, new payees, address changes and changes to online-access credentials.
- Ask which alerts are real-time, which are delayed, and whether they cover every account in the ownership relationship.
- Decide who will receive the alert and what number the bank expects you to call when an alert is not authorized.
Wire and transfer verification
- Ask whether the bank offers a callback, confirmation step, dual approval or another verification process for high-value wires. Learn the exact enrollment and cutoff rules; none of these controls should be assumed to be universal.
- Use a known telephone number or secure message to confirm a beneficiary’s instructions. Do not rely on a changed email address, an unexpected text or a caller who pressures you to bypass the bank’s normal process.
- Ask whether daily or per-transaction transfer limits can be adjusted and how quickly a temporary increase takes effect. A limit that is too high for routine use can increase exposure; one that is too low can cause rushed workarounds.
Access and authentication
- Ask what multifactor-authentication options the bank supports for the account and which events trigger an additional identity check.
- Use a unique password for online banking, keep recovery information current and never disclose a one-time verification code to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.
- Separate routine spending from a high-balance account when practical. Keeping only the amount needed for ordinary payments in a transaction account can reduce the amount exposed if that account is compromised, but it does not replace insurance or bank controls.
A written response plan
Before a problem occurs, ask the bank for the fraud department’s contact route, after-hours instructions and the information it will require to investigate. Write down the bank’s instructions and keep them somewhere accessible without logging in to the potentially compromised account. Ask how to freeze online access, cancel pending transfers and secure linked accounts. The bank’s procedure, not a generic checklist, controls what can actually be stopped.
Daily practices that reduce social-engineering risk
Fraud often begins with a convincing message rather than a technical break-in. Treat an urgent request to move a large balance as untrusted until you verify it through a separate channel.
- For a payment to a new recipient, independently obtain the recipient’s telephone number from a contract, invoice or prior record. Do not use the number in the suspicious message to “confirm” the change.
- Ask the bank what information it will display during a wire or ACH setup and compare the beneficiary name and account details carefully before approving.
- Review balances, recent transactions and new payees on a schedule you can maintain. An alert is useful only if someone sees it and knows how to respond.
- Keep statements, confirmations and correspondence for high-value transfers. They help the bank determine what happened and when.
- Limit the number of people who can initiate or approve transfers. If several people must use the account, ask the bank whether it can assign distinct users and approval roles rather than sharing one login.
These practices lower the chance of an unauthorized transfer, but no control guarantees that a scam will be prevented or that a completed wire can be recovered.

If you suspect a fraudulent wire or transfer
Speed matters. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance, What To Know Before You Wire Money, says that someone who sent a wire through a bank and suspects fraud should contact the bank and report the transfer. Follow this sequence:
- Call the bank immediately. Use the number on your bank statement, debit card or the bank’s official website—not a number supplied in the suspicious message. State that the transfer is suspected fraud and ask what emergency steps are available.
- Ask whether the transfer is pending and what can still be stopped. Request the bank’s instructions for securing online access, linked accounts and payment credentials. Do not assume a recall is possible; recovery depends on timing, payment method and the receiving institution’s actions.
- Preserve evidence. Save emails, texts, caller IDs, invoices, wire confirmations, dates, amounts, beneficiary details and names used by the sender. Do not delete the conversation before the bank records it.
- Follow the bank’s investigation process. Provide the requested timeline and documents promptly, and record the case number, employee names and promised follow-up date.
- Report the scam to the FTC. Submit a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, as the FTC directs. The report does not guarantee reimbursement, but it creates a consumer-fraud record and supplies information to enforcement agencies.
Do not send additional money to someone promising to recover the first payment. A second “processing,” “tax” or “verification” payment is a common follow-on scam.
Questions to settle with the bank before moving a large balance
Use these questions during a branch, telephone or secure-message appointment:
- What is the legal name of this FDIC-insured bank, and is another account I use at this brand actually held by the same bank?
- Which of my products are deposits, and which are investments or other non-deposit products?
- How does the bank classify each account’s ownership category for FDIC purposes?
- Which balances will be aggregated with this account?
- Can the bank calculate my coverage or help me use EDIE for the complete arrangement?
- Which alerts, beneficiary-verification steps, transfer limits and approval controls are available for this account?
- What is the after-hours number and exact procedure for a suspected fraudulent wire?
- How will the bank notify me of a transfer, password change, new device or contact-information change?
Request answers in writing when possible. Product names and online labels can be ambiguous; the account agreement and the bank’s legal entity matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWorked examples
Example 1: two accounts, one category, one bank
You hold $210,000 in savings and $90,000 in checking as individual accounts at the same insured bank. The $300,000 total is aggregated in one ownership category. The standard limit covers $250,000 of that category, so $50,000 is above the limit unless another qualifying arrangement applies.

Example 2: separate insured institutions
You hold $240,000 in a qualifying individual deposit at Bank A and $240,000 in a qualifying individual deposit at Bank B. If the institutions are separately insured banks, each bank’s limit is calculated separately. Verify the legal institutions in BankFind; two branches or two product brands of one bank would not produce this result.
Example 3: a different ownership category
You have an individual account and an account titled in a different ownership category. The second category may receive a separate limit only if the ownership and documentation meet FDIC requirements. Do not count the additional amount until the bank or FDIC confirms that the category qualifies.
Example 4: a bank-distributed investment
You buy a mutual fund through a bank’s investment service and leave $100,000 in the bank’s savings account. The savings account may be a covered deposit if the bank and account qualify; the mutual fund is not an FDIC-insured deposit simply because the bank sold it. Review the investment agreement separately.
What FDIC insurance cannot answer
FDIC insurance does not tell you whether a transfer was authorized, whether a payment can be recalled, whether a bank will reimburse a particular loss, or which security features your account supports. Those questions depend on the transaction, account agreement, applicable law and the bank’s investigation. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s consumer explanation, How can I be sure my money is safe in my bank account?, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s explanation of insured deposits at HelpWithMyBank.gov provide additional federal guidance.
The practical goal is not to find a single product labeled “fraud-proof.” It is to keep the insurance calculation accurate, limit unnecessary exposure, make unusual transfers harder to approve, and give the bank enough time and information to respond when something goes wrong.
