You cannot remove interest-rate risk from a bond ETF portfolio, but you can usually reduce it. The most direct move is to reduce exposure to longer-duration bonds, while checking what that change does to income, reinvestment risk, credit exposure, inflation protection, liquidity and taxes. Short-term bond ETFs, floating-rate funds, Treasury bills and TIPS address different risks; none is a universal hedge.
Start with each fund’s current effective duration, maturity distribution, credit mix, fees, liquidity and tax treatment rather than relying on labels such as “short-term,” “floating-rate” or “inflation-protected.” Then match the portfolio to its job: spending soon, generating income, preserving purchasing power or diversifying a stock portfolio.

Why rising rates usually hurt bond ETFs
Bond prices and market yields generally move in opposite directions. When newly issued bonds offer higher yields, existing bonds with lower coupons become less attractive, so their market prices usually fall. An ETF reflects those changing prices through its net asset value (NAV), and its exchange price can also trade at a premium or discount to NAV.

The size of the move depends heavily on duration. Duration is an estimate of how sensitive a bond or portfolio is to a change in yields. A portfolio with longer duration generally experiences a larger price move for the same change in yields than a portfolio with shorter duration. It is an approximation, not a guarantee: the result can differ when holdings have varied maturities, embedded call or prepayment options, changing credit spreads, leverage or derivatives.

The distinction between maturity and duration matters. Maturity is when an individual bond is scheduled to repay principal. Duration incorporates the timing of all expected cash flows, including coupons, and therefore is usually shorter than maturity for a conventional coupon bond. An ETF owns many bonds with different maturities and normally sells maturing holdings and buys new ones, so a shareholder does not ordinarily receive a single principal repayment on a fixed date.
The PIMCO Funds prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 1, 2026, states: “Fixed income securities with longer durations tend to be more sensitive to changes in interest rates, usually making them more volatile than securities with shorter durations.” That is a useful risk principle, not a promise that every short-duration fund will outperform during a particular rate move.
Step 1: Audit the rate risk you actually own
Before selling or exchanging an ETF, open its latest prospectus, shareholder report and portfolio page. Record the following for every fund:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Effective or average duration: This is the primary first-pass measure of rate sensitivity. Confirm the date and methodology because it changes as yields, holdings and option assumptions change.
- Maturity distribution: Two funds can both call themselves short-term while holding very different concentrations in one-, three- or five-year securities.
- Yield measure: Check whether the published figure is a standardized yield, distribution yield or another measure, and note its date. A higher current yield can reflect higher credit or liquidity risk rather than a safer portfolio.
- Credit quality and sector mix: Shortening duration does not eliminate the possibility that corporate, bank-loan, municipal or securitized holdings lose value when credit spreads widen or borrowers weaken.
- Call, prepayment and extension exposure: Mortgage and callable bonds may repay earlier than expected when rates fall and remain outstanding longer when rates rise, changing the portfolio’s effective duration.
- Expenses and trading conditions: Compare the expense ratio, bid-ask spread, average trading volume and the size and frequency of premiums or discounts to NAV.
- Leverage and derivatives: These can make observed duration and losses differ from what the fund’s name suggests.
Do not assume that a fund becomes safer merely because its share price has already fallen. The relevant question is what securities and risks it holds now, and how those risks fit your time horizon.
Defensive approaches compared
| Approach | Risk it can address | Tradeoffs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce longer-duration exposure | Usually lowers sensitivity to a given yield change, all else equal. | May change income and performance across different yield-curve moves. Compare duration, maturities, yield, expenses and credit mix. |
| Short-term fixed-rate bonds | Generally have less price sensitivity than longer-duration fixed-rate bonds. | They can still lose value, and shortening maturities leaves reinvestment and credit risk. |
| Floating-rate bonds | Periodic coupon resets can moderate sensitivity to some changes in market rates. | Coupons can lag general rates; credit, resale and liquidity risks remain. Income can fall when reference rates decline. |
| Treasury bills or cash-like reserves | Can provide liquidity and, depending on the instrument, less duration than longer bonds. | Yields change, guarantees should not be assumed, and a cash-like label does not make every fund risk-free. |
| TIPS | Principal is adjusted with changes in the Consumer Price Index, addressing a specific inflation risk. | Prices can fall when real yields rise. TIPS funds continue to have duration and do not share one maturity date. |
| Derivatives or inverse funds | Can change interest-rate exposure in specialized portfolios. | Leverage, basis, timing, financing costs and implementation risk make these unsuitable as a default response without specialist knowledge. |
Shorten duration deliberately, not by label
Moving part of a longer-duration allocation into shorter-duration bonds is the clearest way to reduce sensitivity to a specified change in yields, assuming other risks remain comparable. The tradeoff is that shorter bonds generally mature or reset sooner. Their proceeds then must be reinvested at whatever rates are available, so a portfolio that benefits when rates rise can lag if rates subsequently fall.

Income can change as well. A short-term fund may have a lower or higher yield than a long-term fund at a particular point on the yield curve, and that relationship can reverse. A curve move is not always parallel: two-year yields may rise while ten-year yields fall, or one segment may move much more than another. Compare the actual maturity buckets and duration instead of treating “short-term” as a complete description.
Shortening duration also does not cure credit risk. A short-maturity corporate or below-investment-grade fund can lose value if investors demand a larger credit spread, even when Treasury yields are unchanged. If capital stability is the priority, examine both duration and the issuer-quality distribution.

Are floating-rate bond ETFs safer when rates rise?
Floating-rate securities pay coupons linked to a reference rate, usually with a stated spread and a reset schedule. Because the coupon can reset, their prices may be less sensitive to a rise in general rates than those of comparable fixed-rate bonds. That benefit is conditional, not a free hedge.
A reset may occur monthly, quarterly or on another schedule, and many instruments have a floor below which the coupon cannot fall. The reference rate can therefore lag the market rate you are watching, while the spread can widen or narrow with the issuer’s perceived creditworthiness. Fund income may not rise as quickly as headline rates, and it will generally decline if the reference rate falls.
Many floating-rate portfolios have meaningful exposure to bank loans or other lower-rated borrowers. They can face defaults, downgrades, limited resale markets and wider bid-ask spreads during stress. A fund can also hold loans whose repayment is delayed, extending the period during which investors bear credit and liquidity risk. Review credit ratings, seniority, sector concentration, reset frequency, floors, average price and trading liquidity in the current filings.

Do TIPS ETFs lose value when real rates rise?
Yes. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) are designed to adjust principal for inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index, not to protect against every increase in interest rates. The U.S. Treasury’s TreasuryDirect page states: “The principal (called par value or face value) of a TIPS goes up with inflation and down with deflation.” At maturity, an individual TIPS pays the greater of its inflation-adjusted principal or its original principal. Interest is paid every six months.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That inflation adjustment is separate from the bond’s real yield. When real yields rise, the present value of future TIPS cash flows can fall, causing a TIPS ETF’s NAV to decline. A fund’s duration still matters because it measures sensitivity to real-yield changes. Inflation can be rising at the same time that real yields rise, so the principal adjustment may offset part, all or none of the market-price decline over a particular period.
TreasuryDirect lists individual TIPS issuance terms of five, ten or 30 years. Those are issuance choices for individual securities, not the maturity profile of an ETF. A TIPS fund continually replaces holdings and normally has no single date on which every shareholder receives principal. For perspective, a PIMCO Broad U.S. TIPS Index ETF prospectus reported the underlying index’s average maturity as 6.90 years on September 30, 2025. That is average maturity, not the fund’s current duration and not a forecast of future performance.
Taxes require special care. For directly held TIPS, annual federal tax can apply to inflation-related principal increases even before the adjustment is received in cash. Tax treatment inside a TIPS fund depends on the fund’s distributions and your account type. Check the fund’s tax documents and consider whether the holding is in a taxable, tax-deferred or tax-free account.
Use Treasury bills or cash-like reserves for near-term spending
If the money has a known near-term use, a reserve with very short maturity can reduce the duration mismatch between the portfolio and the spending date. Treasury bills and some cash-like vehicles may provide liquidity with less interest-rate sensitivity than intermediate- or long-term bond funds, but their yields reset as bills mature and should not be assumed to persist.

Do not equate a cash-like label with a government guarantee. Verify what the vehicle owns, whether it can trade below its target value, what settlement and withdrawal limits apply, and whether your account provides any applicable protection. The purpose of this reserve is liquidity and a shorter time horizon, not a promise of a particular return.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Risks that remain after reducing rate sensitivity
Credit-spread risk
Bond prices can fall because investors demand more compensation for lending to an issuer, even if Treasury yields do not rise. Government, investment-grade corporate, high-yield, bank-loan and securitized funds respond differently. Duration analysis cannot substitute for reviewing issuer quality and concentration.
Liquidity and market-price risk
An ETF’s exchange price can temporarily diverge from NAV, especially when the underlying bonds are difficult to price or trade. Wide spreads and a discount to NAV can increase the cost of exiting. Use limit orders when appropriate and avoid judging liquidity solely by the ETF’s recent volume; examine the liquidity of the underlying bonds too.
Calls, prepayments and convexity
Callable and mortgage-backed securities can change their expected cash-flow timing. When rates fall, borrowers may refinance and repay sooner, forcing reinvestment at lower yields. When rates rise, prepayments may slow, leaving the fund with longer exposure than a simple maturity label suggests. Convexity affects how sensitivity changes as yields move, so duration is not a perfect straight-line forecast.

Fees, leverage and derivatives
Expenses reduce the return available to shareholders in every rate environment. Leverage and derivatives can alter economic exposure, create collateral or financing needs and make losses larger or less intuitive. A practical implementation process
- Define the job of the bond allocation. Write down whether it is for spending in the next few years, income, emergency liquidity, inflation protection, diversification or a combination. A portfolio built for a known withdrawal date should not be managed like a perpetual income sleeve.
- Set a time horizon for each liability. Match money needed soon with assets whose duration and liquidity are consistent with that date. Keep longer-duration exposure only where you can tolerate interim price declines and do not need to sell at an inconvenient time.
- Collect current fund data. From each ETF’s latest prospectus and holdings file, record effective duration, maturity buckets, credit mix, yield definition and date, expense ratio, assets, spread, premium or discount history, derivatives and distribution schedule.
- Choose the risk you are willing to retain. A shorter-duration fund retains reinvestment risk; a floating-rate fund may retain substantial credit and liquidity risk; TIPS retain real-rate risk; Treasury bills retain the risk that future yields will be lower. Decide which exposure is acceptable before making a switch.
- Make changes in a tax-aware way. In a taxable account, calculate realized gains or losses and consider transaction spreads. In retirement accounts, the tax cost of a trade may differ, but fund expenses, liquidity and allocation risk still matter. Avoid selling solely because a rate headline is dramatic.
- Stage the transition if timing is uncertain. Moving in several tranches can reduce the risk of committing the entire allocation immediately before a reversal, but it cannot guarantee a better result and may leave the portfolio exposed to the original risk for longer.
- Document a rebalancing rule. Use a calendar, allocation bands or a liability-based trigger rather than repeatedly reacting to forecasts. Record why the holding exists and what would cause you to replace it.
Match the tool to the problem
If you expect to spend the money soon
Prioritize liquidity, a short time to principal recovery and limited dependence on selling a volatile long-duration fund. A short-duration or Treasury-bill sleeve may fit better than reaching for yield in a credit-heavy fund. Confirm settlement time and the consequences of a market-price discount.
If your main concern is a further rise in nominal yields
Compare the portfolio’s current duration with a shorter alternative and examine the maturity buckets that drive the exposure. Accept that the change can reduce income or increase reinvestment risk if rates later decline.
If inflation is the central concern
Consider whether inflation-linked exposure is needed, but separate protection against CPI changes from protection against rising real yields. TIPS can lose market value when real rates rise, and a TIPS ETF does not provide an immediate, fixed-date return of principal.
If credit losses are the bigger threat
Reducing duration alone is insufficient. Review issuer quality, sector concentration, defaults, downgrades, loan covenants and liquidity. A short-duration fund can still be volatile when credit spreads widen.
If you depend on regular income
Look beyond the latest distribution. Floating-rate income can reset downward, short-term funds must reinvest frequently and longer-duration funds may offer different income at the cost of greater price sensitivity. Compare the source and sustainability of the distribution with your spending need.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “short-term” means risk-free: Duration may be shorter while credit, liquidity or mortgage risks remain high.
- Using maturity as a substitute for duration: Cash-flow timing, coupons, calls and prepayments can make the two measures materially different.
- Treating floating-rate funds as a guaranteed rate hedge: Reset lags, floors, credit spreads and illiquidity can dominate the result.
- Buying TIPS solely because inflation is high: Rising real yields can still push a TIPS fund’s price down.
- Ignoring the ETF’s trading price: A discount to NAV and a wide bid-ask spread affect the price you actually receive.
- Chasing the highest yield: Yield can be compensation for duration, credit, liquidity or call risk rather than a free benefit.
- Making a large switch based on a rate forecast: Forecasts are uncertain, and different parts of the yield curve can move in opposite directions.
- Forgetting taxes: Direct TIPS ownership can create taxable inflation adjustments, while fund taxation depends on the fund and account.
How to monitor the portfolio after the change
Review the same measures that justified the adjustment. Duration can change as yields and holdings change; a fund that was short in one report may not remain so. Check whether credit quality, sector weights, maturity buckets, expenses, liquidity and premiums or discounts have drifted. Revisit the analysis when your spending horizon, tax situation or inflation objective changes.
There is no single “safe” bond ETF category for every rising-rate environment. A durable plan combines a duration decision with a clear spending horizon, an explicit view of credit and inflation risks, sufficient liquidity and tax-aware implementation. Use each fund’s current documents for the facts that can change, and treat any reduction in rate sensitivity as a tradeoff rather than a guarantee.
