Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrepare a concise picture of why you want advice, what you want to accomplish, when decisions must be made, and the financial facts relevant to those decisions. Have recent statements and tax returns available, add monthly income and expenses if budgeting or debt is central, and take a written list of questions about services, fees, conflicts, credentials, and follow-up. The meeting is also your opportunity to decide whether the planner is qualified and suitable for your needs.
What the first meeting is—and what it is not
An introductory meeting is usually a fact-finding and fit assessment, not an obligation to hire anyone and not necessarily the appointment at which you receive a complete financial plan. The planner needs to understand your circumstances, priorities, risk concerns, and deadlines before making personalized recommendations. You need enough information to judge whether the person can provide the type of help you want, how the relationship would work, and what it would cost.

CFP Board describes the opening stages of financial planning as “Understand the client’s personal and financial circumstances,” “Identify and select goals,” and “Analyze the client’s current course of action.” Those labels come from CFP Board’s process overview published August 14, 2019. They are a useful model, not a script that every planner must follow or a guarantee that a full plan will be delivered at the first appointment.

Investment-adviser rules and terminology discussed below are primarily U.S.-specific. A person may use the title “financial planner” while offering a narrower service, working under a different regulatory framework, or holding no particular credential. Confirm the rules and registrations that apply to the individual and firm you are considering.

Prepare before you schedule or attend
1. Write the reason you are seeking advice
Start with a plain-language explanation of what prompted the meeting. Examples include a job change, an inheritance, approaching retirement, a new business, a large debt balance, uncertainty about investing, a marriage or divorce, a new child, or a need to coordinate taxes and insurance. Your reason helps the planner determine whether the engagement fits and keeps the conversation focused.
Write the two or three questions that matter most right now. A short priority list is more useful than trying to describe every possible financial concern. If several issues compete for attention, rank them so you can say which decision has the nearest deadline or greatest consequence.
2. Define the outcome you want
Decide whether you are looking for a one-time financial plan, continuing investment management, ongoing planning, or a combination. Then identify the areas you expect to cover:
- Cash-flow and budgeting
- Debt repayment
- Emergency savings
- Investments and portfolio allocation
- Retirement income or retirement saving
- Insurance and risk management
- Tax planning or coordination with a tax professional
- Estate and legacy planning
- Education funding
- Equity compensation, business finances, or a major purchase
Do not assume one planner handles all of these areas. Services and product access can be limited, and a planner may refer work to another professional. Ask specifically which matters are included and which are outside the engagement.
3. List deadlines and time horizons
Record dates that could change the advice: a planned retirement, a home purchase, a tax filing or estimated-tax payment, a required distribution, a college payment, an insurance renewal, an expiring employee benefit, or a debt-rate reset. For each goal, note the time horizon and how flexible the date is. The SEC advises prospective clients to discuss goals, timelines, investment size, desired service, and costs; having these details ready makes that discussion concrete.

4. Gather a usable financial snapshot
You do not need to build a perfect financial model before the first conversation. Assemble the information that relates to your questions and be ready to explain anything unusual. Practical first-meeting guidance identifies financial statements and recent tax returns as useful starting documents. If debt or budgeting is central, write down monthly income and expenses.
Before the meeting, note your approximate net worth, cash reserves, debts, interest rates, employer benefits, insurance coverage, and investment accounts. Estimates are acceptable for an initial discussion if you label them as estimates. The purpose is to give the planner enough context to ask better questions, not to prove that your records are flawless.

What to bring or have available
There is no universal, regulator-mandated document packet for every first meeting. The right materials depend on your circumstances and the work you want done. Use this as a relevance-based checklist rather than a demand to disclose everything immediately.
| Information or document | Why it may help | When it is especially relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Recent bank and brokerage statements | Shows balances, account types, cash holdings, and existing investments. | Investment management, allocation, retirement, or cash-reserve questions. |
| Retirement-account and employer-plan statements | Shows contributions, holdings, beneficiary designations, and available plan options. | Retirement saving, rollovers, job changes, or income planning. |
| Recent federal and state tax returns | Provides income, deductions, capital gains, and tax context. | Tax-sensitive investing, a sale of property, equity compensation, or retirement withdrawals. |
| Monthly income and expense list | Shows recurring cash flow and the amount available for saving or debt repayment. | Budgeting, debt reduction, emergency savings, or an irregular income. |
| Debt statements | Shows balances, interest rates, minimum payments, and repayment terms. | Credit-card, student-loan, mortgage, or other debt strategy. |
| Insurance declarations or policy summaries | Identifies coverage amounts, deductibles, premiums, and renewal dates. | Life, disability, health, property, or long-term-care planning. |
| Employee-benefit materials | Clarifies retirement-plan rules, stock compensation, insurance, and employer contributions. | Changing jobs, exercising options, or comparing workplace benefits. |
| Estate documents and beneficiary information | Helps identify existing instructions and gaps to discuss with an attorney. | Marriage, children, inheritance, incapacity planning, or legacy goals. |
| Personal notes about goals and concerns | Captures priorities that may not appear in account statements. | Every meeting, especially when family members disagree or goals are evolving. |
Bring copies or secure digital access only when you are comfortable with the planner’s privacy practices. You can ask what is needed before sending sensitive records and whether the firm uses a secure portal. Do not email account passwords, Social Security numbers, or full login credentials.
Research the planner and firm independently
Check registration and disciplinary information
For U.S. investment professionals, Investor.gov provides a free search tool with registration and background information. Search both the individual and the firm rather than relying on a business card, website biography, or referral. Review the registration status, business history, and any reported disciplinary information, then ask the planner to explain anything you do not understand.

Registration does not by itself establish that a planner is the right fit, and a title alone does not establish registration. The SEC’s guidance on investment advisers applies to investment advisers, not automatically to every person who calls themselves a financial planner.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Verify credentials
If the planner claims a credential, ask which organization issued it, what education and experience it represents, and what standards or continuing requirements apply. Verify the designation with the issuing organization instead of treating initials after a name as proof of expertise. Ask about experience with clients facing circumstances like yours, not merely the number of years in the industry.
Read disclosures before committing
Ask whether the planner will provide a Form ADV and relationship summary when applicable, along with the proposed agreement. Read the scope, compensation, termination terms, conflicts, discretion over accounts, custody arrangements, and responsibilities of each party. You should be able to take the documents away and consider them; pressure to sign immediately is a reason to slow down.
Questions to ask during the meeting
Scope, fit, and qualifications
- What services do you provide, and which of my concerns fall outside your scope?
- Do you provide financial planning, investment management, or both?
- What work product will I receive, and when will I receive it?
- Which services and products are included, and which are limited or billed separately?
- What experience do you have with people in circumstances like mine?
- What qualifications do you hold, who issued them, and what do they require?
- Who will actually work on my account if I become a client?
- How often will we meet, and what monitoring or follow-up is included?
These questions expose a common mismatch: a person seeking broad planning may meet a provider whose work is limited to a particular investment product, or an investor may pay for ongoing management when a one-time plan would address the need.
Compensation and total cost
- Are you paid hourly, through a fixed or flat fee, an asset-based fee, commissions, or a combination?
- What would I pay for the initial work?
- What would a typical ongoing year cost at my expected account size?
- Are there account, transaction, custodial, fund, insurance, or other third-party expenses in addition to your fee?
- When are fees charged, and can they be deducted from an account?
- What happens to the cost if my assets, service needs, or meeting frequency change?
Compare the service purchased, not just the headline number. An hourly consultation, a written plan, and ongoing asset management are different engagements. The SEC notes that advisory costs can include the adviser’s charge plus third-party or investment expenses, so ask for the total cost categories in writing.

Conflicts and recommendation process
- Are you limited to recommending particular products, account types, or platforms?
- How do you select investments, insurance, or other recommendations?
- Do you or the firm receive commissions, revenue sharing, referral payments, or other compensation connected to a recommendation?
- What conflicts could affect me, and how are they disclosed and managed?
- Will you have discretion to trade or move money, and what authorization would that require?
Investor.gov explains that compensation can create conflicts even when a professional is providing useful advice. Investor.gov also states that investment advisers are required to act in a client’s best interest. Keep that statement within its proper context: it concerns investment advisers and should not be generalized to every professional using the planner title.
Service and communication
- How will you communicate—meetings, phone, secure messages, or email?
- How quickly do you normally respond to questions?
- Who is my contact when you are unavailable?
- How will you coordinate with my tax preparer, attorney, or insurance professional?
- How are recommendations updated when markets, laws, income, or family circumstances change?
- How can either of us end the relationship, and are there termination fees?
How to evaluate the answers
Listen for specificity. A strong answer identifies the service, its limits, the person responsible, the fee method, and the documents you can review. Vague promises such as “we do everything” are less useful than a written description of what is included and excluded.
Notice whether the planner asks about your goals, liabilities, taxes, time horizon, risk capacity, family obligations, and existing professionals—or immediately pushes a product. A first meeting should leave you better informed about the decision, not less able to explain what you would be buying.
- Good fit indicators: the planner explains unfamiliar terms, acknowledges limits, distinguishes planning from product sales, discloses compensation, and gives you time to review documents.
- Pause indicators: pressure to transfer assets immediately, reluctance to discuss fees, claims of guaranteed returns, evasiveness about registration or discipline, or recommendations made without learning your circumstances.
- Privacy indicators: the firm explains how records are collected, stored, shared, and destroyed and uses a secure method for sensitive documents.
What a typical first process may look like
- Initial conversation: You describe the reason for seeking help, goals, deadlines, financial situation, and desired service. The planner explains the firm’s scope and whether it appears able to help.
- Information and document review: If you proceed, the planner gathers the records needed for the agreed work. This stage may reveal missing information or a need for another professional.
- Goal selection and analysis: The planner prioritizes goals and analyzes your current course of action, including assumptions, trade-offs, and risks.
- Recommendations or plan delivery: The timing and format depend on the engagement. A one-time plan may produce a written analysis; ongoing management may involve an investment policy, implementation, and monitoring.
- Implementation and follow-up: You decide which recommendations to accept. Clarify who opens accounts, contacts other professionals, tracks tasks, and schedules the next review.
This sequence is a planning model rather than a promise. Some planners charge for the initial discovery meeting; others offer an introductory conversation and quote a later engagement. Ask what, if anything, will be delivered before you agree to pay.
If you are comparing more than one planner
Use the same questions and request comparable written information. A lower quoted fee may cover a narrower service, while a higher fee may include coordination or ongoing monitoring that you do not need. Record the answers while they are fresh.

| Comparison point | What to record |
|---|---|
| Service scope | Planning, investment management, both, or another defined service; included and excluded topics. |
| Relevant experience | Experience with your goals, income pattern, family situation, tax issues, or account types. |
| Credentials and history | Issuing organization, verified status, registration, and independently checkable disciplinary information. |
| Total cost | Initial fee, recurring fee, asset-based rate or commission, account and investment expenses, and termination charges. |
| Conflicts and limitations | Products or platforms the planner can recommend, compensation arrangements, and conflict disclosures. |
| Work and monitoring | Written deliverables, implementation help, review frequency, rebalancing or monitoring, and coordination with other professionals. |
| Relationship logistics | Who serves you, response times, meeting format, security practices, and how to end the engagement. |
Do not choose by credentials, fee, or personality alone. Your needs and the planner’s proposed scope must be clear enough to evaluate together.
After the meeting: a decision checklist
- Write down what the planner said would be done, by whom, and by when.
- Compare that scope with the reason you sought help and your top questions.
- Read the Form ADV, relationship summary, agreement, fee schedule, and other disclosures that apply.
- Verify any registration, credential, or disciplinary information independently.
- Calculate direct and indirect costs for the first year and a typical ongoing year.
- List unresolved questions and ask for written answers before transferring assets or signing.
- Discuss the proposal with a trusted person or your existing tax or legal professional when appropriate.
- Keep copies of the documents and notes, including the date and participants in the meeting.
You are not required to hire a planner because you attended a consultation or shared documents. If the service is not a fit, a brief message explaining that you are not proceeding is sufficient. If you do hire the planner, confirm the next action, deadline, and responsible person in writing.
A simple 24-hour preparation plan
The day before
- Review your two or three highest-priority questions.
- Collect statements, recent tax returns, and any deadline-related documents.
- Write monthly income and expenses if cash flow, budgeting, or debt is part of the discussion.
- Check the planner and firm through independent sources and note questions about the results.
- Prepare a one-page summary of goals, time horizons, family responsibilities, and major concerns.
At the meeting
- Explain what prompted you to seek advice before discussing products.
- Ask the scope, fee, conflict, credential, and follow-up questions on your list.
- Take notes on terms you need explained and documents you are promised.
- Do not sign or transfer money until you have reviewed the relevant agreement and disclosures.
Afterward
- Compare the proposal with your priorities and with any other planner you interviewed.
- Confirm costs, deliverables, deadlines, and termination terms in writing.
- Decide whether the relationship provides the specific help you wanted, at a cost and level of oversight you accept.
Questions that depend on your situation
If debt is the main issue
Bring balances, interest rates, minimum payments, promotional-rate expiration dates, and your monthly cash-flow estimate. Ask whether the planner provides debt strategy or only investment management, and how recommendations account for high-interest debt and emergency reserves.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If retirement is approaching
Bring benefit estimates, retirement-account statements, employer-plan rules, expected retirement date, desired spending, and major health or family obligations. Ask how the planner separates accumulation advice from withdrawal, tax, insurance, and Social Security decisions, and which items require coordination with another professional.
If a major transaction is pending
Explain the deadline and what is known versus uncertain. For a home purchase, sale of investments, inheritance, business transaction, or equity-compensation decision, ask what analysis can be completed before the deadline and what information is still needed. Do not let urgency replace review of conflicts, fees, and written terms.
The outcome you should expect
By the end of a productive first meeting, you should understand whether the planner’s services match your questions, what information is needed next, how recommendations would be made, what the relationship could cost, and what happens if you continue. You should also know which claims you can verify independently and which decisions require a tax, legal, insurance, or other specialist.
