Prepare for an AI-shaped interview by becoming better at the parts AI cannot credibly perform for you: independent problem-solving, clear communication, sound trade-offs, and accurate discussion of your own work. Use an AI assistant before the interview for realistic practice and feedback, but never assume it is allowed during a live session. Read the assessment instructions and ask the recruiter when the rules are unclear.

The format may be live coding, pair programming, a take-home project, system design, behavioral questions, or an asynchronous recording. Your preparation should mirror that format, while still proving that you can reason without generated wording.

What AI is changing—and what it is not

Companies increasingly use AI in engineering work and in parts of recruitment. An employer may use automated interview software, AI-assisted scoring, coding platforms with different rules, or a take-home assignment designed to reveal how you use tools. Other employers prohibit generative AI entirely for a particular stage. There is no universal candidate rule.

The constant is that you remain responsible for the accuracy and authenticity of your answers. You should be able to explain your code, assumptions, tests, architecture, and decisions in your own words. A polished answer that you cannot defend under follow-up questions is a liability, whether or not AI helped create it.

A 2025 survey of 131 people preparing for software-engineering interviews found that candidates rarely practiced in authentic conditions. The authors associated that gap with stress and feeling unprepared; the survey does not prove that one routine causes better hiring results. The practical implication is to rehearse the actual environment rather than only reading solutions.

An Oxford Internet Institute Hire AI experiment involving 1,800 recruiters and HR professionals in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany (project period February 2025 to February 2026) reported that candidates with certified AI skills were significantly more likely to receive interview invitations. That finding describes the experiment, not a promise that a certificate will secure an interview. Demonstrable judgment with AI is more useful than collecting credentials you cannot apply.

Start with the job and the assessment format

1. Translate the job description into a skill map

List every requirement under four headings:

  • Core coding: languages, data structures, algorithms, testing, debugging, and version-control practices.
  • System responsibilities: APIs, databases, distributed systems, cloud services, observability, security, or performance.
  • Ways of working: code review, incident response, documentation, collaboration, and explaining trade-offs.
  • AI-related expectations: prompt design, tool evaluation, retrieval, model integration, data governance, or simply responsible use of coding assistants.

Choose the language you can explain most clearly unless the employer specifies one. If the role names a required language, practice in that language and learn its standard library and testing conventions well enough to justify your choices.

2. Identify the likely interview type

Do not prepare for “a technical interview” as though it were one universal event. Ask the recruiter what each stage measures, how long it lasts, and what tools are available. Your practice should resemble the answer environment:

Assessment Practice that matches it What interviewers can observe
Live coding or pair programming Timed problems in a shared editor; speak while you work Reasoning, collaboration, testing, and recovery from mistakes
Take-home project Build a small feature with a README, tests, and a short design note Scope control, maintainability, documentation, and trade-offs
System or API design Draw a design, state assumptions, estimate scale, and discuss failure modes Decomposition, prioritization, reliability, and communication
Debugging or code review Diagnose unfamiliar code, reproduce a defect, and propose a minimal fix Investigation method, test discipline, and risk awareness
Behavioral or project discussion Rehearse concise stories, then answer unpredictable follow-ups Ownership, judgment, learning, and credibility
Asynchronous video Record answers to a time limit without restarting Clarity, structure, and ability to prioritize information

Use a repeatable problem-solving routine

For coding questions, practice this sequence until it feels natural:

  1. Clarify the task. Restate the input, output, constraints, and assumptions. Ask about invalid, empty, duplicate, or unusually large inputs.
  2. Offer a baseline. Describe the simplest correct approach before optimizing. This gives the interviewer a reference point and exposes hidden assumptions.
  3. Choose a design. Explain the data structure or architecture, why it fits the constraints, and the alternatives you rejected.
  4. Estimate complexity. State time and space complexity, including the dominant operation and any extra memory.
  5. Implement in small steps. Name invariants and keep the interviewer oriented as the code changes.
  6. Test representative cases. Use a normal case, a boundary case, an empty or minimal case, and a case that would break a tempting but incorrect approach.
  7. Review and improve. Look for off-by-one errors, mutation, concurrency hazards, input validation, and unnecessary work. Then explain what you would change in production.

Practice speaking this process aloud. Silent success on a coding platform does not demonstrate the communication an interview requires.

How to use an AI assistant before the interview

Ask it to be a demanding mock interviewer

Give the assistant the role, seniority, and publicly available requirements from the job description. Instruct it to ask one question at a time, wait for your answer, and probe assumptions rather than immediately showing a solution. A useful prompt is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Act as a senior interviewer for a backend engineer role. Ask one system-design question at a time. Do not provide a solution unless I request a hint. After each answer, ask one realistic follow-up about scale, reliability, security, or trade-offs. At the end, score my assumptions, structure, technical accuracy, and communication against explicit criteria.

Keep the interview realistic: use a timer, avoid looking at generated answers, and finish by writing your own correction list.

Generate targeted questions, not generic trivia

Paste only non-confidential, public information such as the role requirements and technology categories. Ask for a balanced set of questions covering implementation, debugging, design, collaboration, and the AI-related duties named in the listing. Request increasing difficulty and a reason each question matters for the role.

Use a hint ladder

When stuck, ask for a single hint about the next decision, not a complete solution. Try the problem again, then request a second hint only if necessary. Finally, close the assistant and re-solve the problem from a blank page. This converts help into learning instead of answer memorization.

Request critique against criteria

An assistant can flag missing edge cases, unclear explanations, or an unjustified complexity claim. Give it your own reasoning and code, then ask it to separate factual errors from stylistic preferences. Treat every claim as unverified until you check it against documentation or run a small example yourself.

Protect confidential information

Do not paste an employer’s private prompt, a current employer’s source code, customer data, credentials, unreleased product information, or personal information into an unapproved tool. Replace names and values with fictional ones, or work from a public analogue. Follow any non-disclosure and assessment instructions.

Verify everything an AI generates

AI assistants can produce plausible but wrong algorithms, obsolete APIs, invented metrics, and confident explanations of code that does not run. Use this verification loop:

  • Re-derive the algorithm or design without looking at the generated answer.
  • Run representative and adversarial examples, including the edge cases you identified.
  • Check complexity, error handling, security assumptions, and version-specific behavior against authoritative documentation.
  • Rewrite the explanation in your own vocabulary and remove claims about projects, skills, metrics, or outcomes you did not actually achieve.
  • Keep a short error log. Reviewing your recurring mistakes is more valuable than collecting more generated questions.

Can you use AI during a live interview?

Only when the employer explicitly permits it for that stage. Never infer permission from the fact that the job involves AI or that an ordinary search engine is allowed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before an assessment, check the invitation, candidate portal, coding-platform rules, and confidentiality notice. If they do not say whether generative AI, documentation, internet access, or ordinary autocomplete is allowed, ask the recruiter in writing. Ask which tools are permitted, when they may be used, whether use must be disclosed, and whether the same rule applies to every stage.

The Scottish Government Recruitment Team states: “It’s important to understand that while AI can help you prepare for an interview, AI must never be used during an interview to generate responses.” That is guidance for Scottish Government recruitment, not a universal rule for private employers. The same guide says, “Your application, assessment and interview should give us an accurate and authentic picture of your skills and experience.” Follow the employer’s announced policy for your assessment.

Rule communicated by employer Your appropriate action
AI prohibited Disable assistants and extensions, use only the permitted editor and resources, and do not ask an external model for hints.
AI allowed with disclosure Use only named tools, disclose when and how you used them, and verify every output. Keep your own reasoning visible.
AI encouraged because it reflects the job Demonstrate tool selection, prompt quality, testing, privacy controls, and how you reject or correct unsafe output.
No clear rule Pause and ask the recruiter before the session. Do not treat silence as permission.

Prepare stories from your real work

For each significant project, write a one-page outline:

  1. Problem: who needed what, and what constraint mattered?
  2. Your contribution: which decisions and implementation did you personally own?
  3. Options: what alternatives did you consider, and why did you reject them?
  4. Evidence: what changed after your work? Use a real metric only when you can explain how it was measured.
  5. Failure or trade-off: what did not work, and how did you respond?
  6. Learning: what would you do differently now?

Expect follow-ups such as “Why that database?”, “What happened at ten times the traffic?”, “How did you test it?”, or “What part would you automate?” If AI helped you draft a résumé bullet or rehearse a story, ensure every sentence remains factually yours and that you can reconstruct the underlying work without the draft.

Show practical AI literacy when the role calls for it

AI literacy is not the ability to recite model terminology. It is the ability to make a safe, testable engineering decision. Be ready to discuss:

  • How you define success and evaluate output quality.
  • How you detect hallucinations, bias, prompt injection, leakage, and unsafe content.
  • What data may be sent to a tool and what must remain private.
  • When deterministic code, search, or a human review is preferable to a model.
  • How you monitor cost, latency, reliability, and regressions after deployment.
  • How you document tool use so another engineer can reproduce or audit it.

If you hold an AI certificate, treat it as supporting evidence, not a substitute for a working demonstration. The Oxford experiment’s invitation finding does not establish that every credential has value or that certification guarantees employment.

Understand how employers may use AI in assessment

Canada’s federal Public Service Commission guidance says hiring managers remain accountable for appointment decisions, should validate AI output, explain relevant uses, and inform candidates when AI is used. It discusses automated interview tools and AI-supported assessment while warning that opaque scoring can introduce bias or make decisions hard to explain. It also says candidate AI use may be allowed when it reflects the job, provided the employer specifies permitted tools and stages. This is Canadian federal public-service guidance, not a statement of every employer’s legal duties.

If an employer describes an AI-enabled process, reasonable questions include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What tool or type of tool will be used?
  • Is the session recorded, transcribed, or scored automatically?
  • Which competencies are being assessed, and how is human review involved?
  • May I use an AI assistant, ordinary documentation, or accessibility software?
  • How should I request an accommodation or report a technical problem?

Do not assume a particular answer is guaranteed by law. The applicable policy and jurisdiction determine what information or accommodation an employer must provide.

Choose practice resources by fit, not hype

When you have several ways to prepare, compare them on these dimensions:

Decision factor Questions to ask
Similarity Does it match the real format, time limit, collaboration model, and allowed tools?
Independent reasoning Will I solve and explain, or merely recognize a generated answer?
Feedback Does it assess correctness, communication, complexity, and edge cases?
Privacy Can I practice without uploading confidential material?
Accessibility Can I use the format, language, and accommodations I need?
Coverage Does it include debugging, design, behavioral, and role-specific work—not only puzzles?

Cracking the Coding Interview, 6th Edition, by Gayle Laakmann McDowell, is one optional technical resource. The author’s description lists 189 programming questions and solutions, technical topics, and behavioral preparation. It is a practice book, not a current guide to AI-enabled hiring policy; pair it with the employer’s instructions and role-specific rehearsal. Free alternatives include writing your own problems from the job description, reviewing public documentation, and conducting timed sessions with a peer.

A practical seven-day rehearsal plan

  1. Day 1: map the job description, confirm the stages, and ask about AI and documentation rules.
  2. Day 2: complete one timed coding or debugging session in the permitted environment; record your assumptions and complexity analysis.
  3. Day 3: practice a system or API design relevant to the role, including scale, failure modes, security, and observability.
  4. Day 4: use an AI assistant as a mock interviewer. Request hints only after attempting each problem, then verify its feedback.
  5. Day 5: rehearse three project stories and invite follow-up questions about decisions, failures, and measurable outcomes.
  6. Day 6: run a full simulation with the real time limit, editor, camera, or whiteboard. Review your error log.
  7. Day 7: solve one final problem without assistance, review the employer’s rules, test your equipment, and prepare concise questions for the interviewer.

Common mistakes and recovery

Relying on generated scripts

Symptom: your answer sounds polished but collapses under a follow-up. Fix: close the assistant, explain the idea from first principles, and write down the trade-off you would defend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practicing only puzzle questions

Symptom: you perform well on algorithms but cannot discuss debugging, design, or prior work. Fix: allocate practice time across the stages listed in the employer’s process.

Assuming AI is permitted

Symptom: an extension or model is open when the rules prohibit it. Fix: remove unapproved tools before starting and obtain written clarification in advance.

Uploading sensitive material

Symptom: you paste proprietary code or customer data to obtain feedback. Fix: replace it with a fictional example and use an approved environment for any real material.

Claiming AI expertise without evidence

Symptom: you list tools but cannot explain evaluation, privacy, or failure handling. Fix: prepare one small, reproducible example that shows how you tested and corrected an AI-assisted result.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The 131-person preparation survey describes how a defined group practiced; it does not establish a causal hiring advantage for a specific routine. The Oxford experiment’s 1,800-participant result concerns certified AI skills and interview invitations in three countries; it should not be generalized to every employer, role, or credential. A Harvard Kennedy School article in August 2025 reported that BrightHire and Harvard Business School research found only 2.2% of interviews in 2025 included explicit AI questions. The underlying page was inaccessible for verification here, so the figure’s detailed methodology and context are uncertain. Treat it as a provisional description of that summary, not a universal measure of hiring practice.

These limits do not change the preparation decision: build independent technical ability, practice communicating it in the exact assessment format, use AI as a supervised learning aid before the interview, and follow the disclosed rules during it.
