Yes, you can prepare for CA Intermediate Paper 3 Taxation without coaching if you treat self-study as a managed process rather than simply reading a book. Anchor your plan to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) material applicable to your exact examination sitting, cover both Income-tax Law and GST, practise questions with your notes closed, maintain an error log, and use the sitting-specific Revision Test Paper (RTP), statutory update and mock tests.

For the September 2026 examination, ICAI’s Board of Studies applicability listing specifies July 2025 study material for both sections, plus the September 2026 RTP and statutory update. A different sitting can have a different edition or amendment cut-off, so the first task is always to verify the current applicability notice.

Start by fixing the examination sitting and material version

Tax law changes, and ICAI applies study material and legislative updates by examination sitting. A self-study plan built on an old book can leave you learning provisions that are no longer examinable or missing amendments that are.

  1. Identify your target sitting. Write the month and year at the top of your planner.
  2. Open ICAI’s Board of Studies applicability listing for that sitting. Note the prescribed study-material edition, study guidelines, RTP and statutory update for Paper 3.
  3. Download the official Income-tax Law and GST material. Keep the two sections in separate folders, physical files or notebook sections.
  4. Record the update cut-off. A pronouncement or statutory-update document for one sitting does not automatically apply to another. For example, a May 2026 pronouncement list has a stated cut-off that should not be carried forward to September 2026 or January 2027 without checking the newer notice.

ICAI’s Income-tax Law page lists its material as applicable to the May 2026, September 2026 and January 2027 examinations and provides a September 2026 statutory-update link. Treat that as an applicability reference, not as a permanent edition. Before every attempt, recheck the Board of Studies listing.

Understand what Paper 3 Taxation contains

Paper 3 has two sections. Your preparation is incomplete if it covers only the section you find easier.

Section A: Income-tax Law

The official outline starts with basic concepts, residential status and scope of total income. It then develops the heads of income:

  • Salaries
  • Income from house property
  • Profits and gains of business or profession
  • Capital gains
  • Income from other sources

The course continues with the related provisions and computations prescribed in the applicable modules. Build your chapter checklist from the current ICAI contents page rather than relying on an older coaching index.

Section B: Goods and Services Tax

The GST material covers the framework and the compliance mechanics that follow from it, including:

  • GST in India
  • Supply
  • Charge of tax
  • Place of supply
  • Exemptions
  • Time and value of supply
  • Input tax credit
  • Registration
  • Tax invoices and credit or debit notes
  • Accounts and records
  • E-way bills
  • Payment of tax
  • Tax deduction or collection at source, where included for the sitting
  • Returns

Use the applicable study guidelines to identify exclusions, newly added provisions and any topic-specific instructions for your sitting. Do not assume that a topic listed in a previous edition is tested in the same way in the next one.

Build a self-study plan that covers both sections

Divide your available calendar into learning, question practice and revision. The exact number of hours differs by student and is not prescribed by the official sources; what matters is that every block has a defined output.

Create a chapter map

Make one checklist for Income-tax Law and one for GST. Under each chapter, leave space for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • First reading completed
  • Examples solved without assistance
  • Question practice completed
  • Errors corrected
  • Revision completed
  • RTP or mock-test questions attempted

Mark chapters as not started, in progress, practised or revision-ready. A percentage of pages read is not a useful completion measure if you cannot solve the associated questions.

Sequence the learning blocks

For Income-tax Law, begin with the basic concepts and residential-status framework because later computations depend on knowing who is taxable and what enters total income. Then move through the heads of income in the order used by the module, keeping a running sheet of definitions, conditions, exemptions, deductions and computation formats.

For GST, learn the tax architecture before jumping to return forms. A practical sequence is GST fundamentals, supply, charge, place of supply, exemptions, time and value of supply, input tax credit, registration and invoicing, followed by accounts, e-way bills, payment, tax deduction or collection at source and returns. If the applicable study guidelines change that order or exclude a topic, follow the sitting-specific document.

Allocate time deliberately

Do not postpone one section until the other is finished. A weekly plan can alternate sections or assign different days to each, but it should include both every week. Reserve separate calendar blocks for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Learning new provisions and examples
  • Closed-book question solving
  • Error-log review
  • Amendment and statutory-update reading
  • Timed RTP or mock-test work

Leave a final revision window in which you are no longer trying to read every paragraph for the first time. If your checklist still contains untouched chapters near the examination, prioritise the applicable module and high-frequency practice rather than replacing it with unverified summaries.

Study the official material actively

Reading a tax chapter once creates familiarity, not reliable recall. Use a repeatable cycle for every subtopic.

  1. Read a small unit. Cover one rule, illustration or tightly related group of provisions.
  2. Work the official example. Write each step, including the reason an item is included, excluded or adjusted.
  3. Close the material. Reproduce the core rule, conditions and computation sequence from memory.
  4. Attempt the related questions. Do not look at the answer while deciding the issue, selecting the provision or performing the calculation.
  5. Compare and annotate. Identify whether your mistake was conceptual, provision-based, computational or presentational.
  6. Schedule a delayed reattempt. Return to the question after a gap and solve it again without copying the earlier working.

For computation-heavy Income-tax topics, write a fixed format: identify the taxpayer and relevant year or period, state the applicable rule, list the components, apply exclusions or deductions, perform the calculation and present the conclusion. For GST questions, identify the transaction, determine whether there is a supply, analyse charge and place of supply, apply time and value rules, test exemptions and input-tax-credit conditions, and then address the compliance consequence where the question requires it.

Use an error log as your personal revision syllabus

A notebook or spreadsheet should capture every material error, not only questions you got completely wrong. Record the following fields:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Field What to write
Question and source Chapter, question number and whether it came from the module, RTP or mock test
Topic For example, residential status, salary valuation, supply or input tax credit
Error type Concept, provision, calculation, reading the facts or presentation
What you did The incorrect step or assumption, in your own words
Correct rule A concise statement linked to the applicable module or update
Next action Re-read a specified paragraph, solve a related question or memorise a condition
Reattempt result Correct, partially correct or still unresolved

Review the log before choosing your next revision block. If several errors share a cause, revise the rule once and then solve a small cluster of questions. Do not turn the log into a second textbook; keep the correction short enough to use repeatedly.

Practise Income-tax Law as a sequence of decisions

Income-tax questions often test whether you can apply a chain of provisions, not whether you can recite an isolated definition. Use a consistent decision path.

Classify the taxpayer and scope first

Begin by identifying the assessee, residential status and the resulting scope of taxable income under the applicable provisions. If the question gives dates, locations or receipts outside India, put those facts into a small timeline before calculating anything.

Work head by head

For salary, house property, business or profession, capital gains and other sources, list the gross items, exclusions, statutory deductions and resulting income in the order used by the module. Keep separate workings for each head so that an error in one does not obscure another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

State assumptions and show workings

Where a fact is missing, use only an assumption permitted by the question or the applicable material and state it. Show the provision or condition supporting an adjustment. A neat working makes it easier to detect a wrong rate, threshold, period or classification during review.

Mix illustrations with unseen questions

Official illustrations teach the method; unseen questions test transfer. After completing a set of examples, choose questions from the chapter without looking at the answer pattern. Include integrated questions that require more than one head or preliminary concept when the module provides them.

Practise GST by linking concepts to compliance

GST questions can feel fragmented if each chapter is memorised separately. Build a one-page flow for a transaction:

  1. Is there a supply under the applicable definition?
  2. What is the nature of the supply and who are the parties?
  3. Which charging provision applies?
  4. What is the place of supply and the resulting tax type?
  5. Is an exemption available?
  6. What are the time-of-supply and value-of-supply consequences?
  7. Can input tax credit be claimed, and are the conditions satisfied?
  8. What registration, invoice, record, e-way-bill, payment or return consequence follows?

Use this flow only as a solving aid; always apply the exact conditions in the current module and statutory update. Practise short conceptual questions as well as calculations. For compliance chapters, make comparison sheets for the trigger, document, due event and consequence stated in the applicable material.

Bring amendments into the main study process

Read the statutory update alongside the chapter it changes. If you leave amendments until the final day, you risk confusing an old rule with the current one.

  1. List every update heading in the sitting-specific statutory-update document.
  2. Write the affected chapter beside each heading.
  3. Mark the paragraph or example in your main notes that the update changes.
  4. Replace superseded figures or conditions instead of keeping two competing versions on the same page.
  5. Practise at least one question that uses each material amendment, if an applicable question is provided.

The Board of Studies listing for September 2026 pairs the July 2025 study material with a September 2026 statutory update and RTP. That pairing illustrates why a previous-attempt book or notes set must be checked rather than assumed current.

Use RTPs and mock tests as diagnostic tools

After completing the relevant chapters, attempt the RTP for your sitting under timed, exam-like conditions. ICAI’s course portal also lists model or mock-test resources; the available set and applicability depend on the examination sitting.

  1. Download the correct sitting-specific paper and answer material.
  2. Attempt the paper in one uninterrupted sitting when practical, without opening the solution.
  3. Mark questions you leave unanswered as well as those you answer incorrectly.
  4. Compare your working with the official answer, including the reasoning and presentation.
  5. Enter each substantive issue in your error log.
  6. Return to the relevant module section and then reattempt the question after a delay.

Track topic-level accuracy, incomplete workings and unanswered questions. A small number of mock scores is not a reliable prediction of the actual result; use the data to decide what to revise next.

Choose supplementary books without losing the syllabus anchor

A supplementary question bank or explanation book can be useful, but it should not replace the official applicability reference. Compare any two resources on these five axes:

Check Questions to ask
Exam sitting and syllabus Does it state the target examination and cover both Income-tax Law and GST as prescribed?
Update coverage Does it identify the statutory-update cut-off and incorporate the amendments for your sitting?
Worked examples Are solutions explained step by step, including why an item is included or excluded?
Practice volume Does it provide enough varied questions across both sections rather than concentrating on one?
Role of the resource Is it a primary text, a question bank or a revision aid, and are you using it for that role?

If a commercial book conflicts with the current ICAI material, pause and resolve the difference against the applicable official source before memorising either version.

Decide whether you need a physical Paper 3 book

A printed CA Intermediate Taxation study book is optional. It may suit learners who concentrate better offline, annotate heavily or want a single desk reference. ICAI’s online material is a direct alternative, so buying a book is not a prerequisite for self-study.

Before purchasing, verify the examination sitting, edition, statutory-update coverage and whether both Income-tax Law and GST are included. A listing that does not state those details should not be treated as current merely because its title says “CA Inter Taxation.” No particular retailer or edition is automatically applicable to your attempt.

Common self-study failures and specific fixes

Using a previous attempt’s notes unchanged

Fix: Match every chapter and amendment against the current applicability listing. Keep superseded notes out of the active revision file.

Reading only the easier section

Fix: Put both sections on the weekly checklist and reserve revision time for each. Paper 3 preparation has to cover Income-tax Law and GST.

Looking at solutions too early

Fix: Close the material, write the issue and attempt the computation first. Use the answer only for comparison and correction.

Collecting multiple summaries

Fix: Keep ICAI’s applicable modules as the syllabus base and add only a resource that solves a specific problem, such as extra practice or concise revision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring presentation errors

Fix: Record missing workings, unexplained assumptions and skipped conditions in the error log alongside substantive mistakes.

Treating mock marks as a guarantee

Fix: Analyse chapter-level accuracy, unanswered questions and recurring error types. Use those findings to set revision priorities, not to predict a result.

A practical final-revision cycle

When the first pass through the syllabus is complete, cycle through the following tasks:

  1. Review the chapter checklist and identify unresolved topics.
  2. Read the corresponding error-log entries before opening the chapter.
  3. Reproduce key conditions, definitions and computation formats from memory.
  4. Solve a mixed set containing both Income-tax Law and GST questions.
  5. Attempt the applicable RTP or mock-test questions you previously missed.
  6. Update your notes only where the current material or statutory update requires it.
  7. Repeat the cycle until errors are isolated and corrected rather than merely familiar.

In the last revision block, prioritise the sitting-specific statutory update, your unresolved error-log items and questions you leave incomplete under time pressure. Do not replace the official material with an unverified last-minute list.

What “ready” means for a self-study candidate

You are using a workable preparation system when you can identify the correct sitting and material version, explain the rule before calculating, solve questions from both sections without immediately checking the answer, locate and correct recurring errors, and apply the current statutory update. Readiness is demonstrated by that process and by improving practice performance at topic level; it is not established by a pass-rate statistic or a fixed number of study hours.

The most defensible self-study route is therefore straightforward: use the applicable ICAI modules as the authority, learn concepts through worked examples, practise closed-book questions, maintain an error log, integrate amendments, and test yourself with the correct RTP and mock resources. Coaching may provide structure for some students, but the official material and a disciplined feedback loop are sufficient to organise preparation without it.
