Plan the job change around two confirmed payroll dates: the last regular payday from your current employer and the first payday on the new employer’s calendar. Federal law does not guarantee an immediate final paycheck, and it does not require a general payout of unused vacation or sick leave. Your state’s rules and the written employer policy or agreement may change both results. The new employer’s payroll cutoff, start date and pay frequency determine when the first deposit arrives and whether it covers a partial period.
Before resigning, obtain the old employer’s final-pay and leave details in writing, ask the new employer for its first-pay-period dates, and build a transition budget from estimated net deposits rather than salary or gross wages.

The three cash events to put on one calendar
A job change can involve three separate transactions. Treating them as one payment is the source of many cash-flow surprises.
| Cash event | What controls the date or amount | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Final ordinary wages | Your former employer’s regular payday, the last pay-period dates, and any state deadline | Last day worked, pay period covered, normal payday and whether a separate deposit is expected |
| Unused vacation or PTO | State law plus the employer’s policy, agreement or contract; federal law does not require general vacation, sick, holiday or severance pay | Recorded balance, payable leave categories, calculation rate and anticipated payment date |
| First new-job wages | The new payroll calendar, cutoff, start date, pay frequency and treatment of a partial period | First payday, dates covered, expected partial-period treatment and direct-deposit setup deadline |
Make a single timeline with the three events rather than assuming the old employer’s payday and the new employer’s payday will line up. Use confirmed dates where possible and label estimates clearly.

Before you give notice: capture the facts that disappear from memory
Save your recent pay statements and write down the items below while you still have easy access to the payroll system. A statement can show the pay-period dates and deductions that you will later need to check.
- Final work date and the normal payday for that pay period.
- Start and end dates of the last pay period.
- Current vacation, PTO, sick-leave and other leave balances by category.
- The written policy, employment agreement or bargaining-agreement language that addresses payment at separation.
- Any payroll contact or HR case number for follow-up.
Policies often distinguish vacation from sick leave or personal leave. Record each balance separately; an all-in PTO number does not establish that every hour is payable.
When is my last paycheck after I quit?
Federal baseline
The U.S. Department of Labor states that employers are not required by federal law to give former employees their final paycheck immediately. The federal starting point is therefore the employer’s regular payday for the last pay period, unless a different rule applies.
State rules can create an earlier deadline
Some states require final wages on a specific schedule, which can differ depending on whether the employee resigned, was laid off or was discharged. The Department of Labor’s state-payday table is a broad starting point and was last revised January 1, 2023; it advises workers to consult the relevant state labor office for official information. Because the state is not known here, do not use a generic number of days as your deadline. Check the current labor-department rule for your work location.
What to ask the former employer

- What date will the final regular-wage payment be issued?
- Which pay-period dates does it cover?
- Will it arrive through the usual direct-deposit method or by another method?
- Will any leave payout be included in that payment or issued separately?
- Who should explain a missing or incorrect payment?
Keep the response with your pay statements. If the regular payday passes and wages are still unpaid, the Department of Labor directs workers to its Wage and Hour Division or to the state labor department. An agency can explain the complaint or assistance process; it cannot turn an unverified employer promise into a confirmed payment date.
Does my employer have to pay out unused vacation?
There is no universal federal payout rule
The Fair Labor Standards Act does not require vacation, sick, holiday or severance pay. Whether unused leave must be paid when employment ends can depend on state law and on the employer’s policy, agreement or applicable contract. The fact that a balance appears in a payroll portal does not, by itself, establish that every hour is payable.
Separate the balance from the payable categories
Ask payroll to identify each category and its treatment at separation. For example, a policy may treat vacation differently from sick leave, or impose conditions described in the written terms. Ask for the recorded hours, the categories that qualify, the rate used to calculate the payment and the anticipated payment date. Request the policy version that applies to you if the rules have changed.
Check the law where you worked
State leave and wage laws vary, and the controlling state may depend on where you performed the work rather than where the company’s headquarters is located. Use the relevant state labor department for a current answer. If a contract or bargaining agreement promises payment, preserve that document and ask how it interacts with state law.
Questions that prevent an unexpected zero
- Is the balance an earned vacation balance, a general PTO bank, sick leave or another category?
- Does the policy pay the balance at separation, and are there conditions?
- What hourly or daily rate will be used?
- Will the payment be on the final regular check or a separate payroll?
- What date should you expect, and how will it be described on the statement?
Do not count an unconfirmed leave payout in money needed for rent, debt payments or other bills. Treat it as a possible later deposit until both the entitlement and date are confirmed.

When will I get my first paycheck at a new job?
The payroll calendar, not the offer letter alone, controls the date
Your start date may fall inside an existing pay period or after its cutoff. Ask the new employer for the first payday and the exact start and end dates of the period it covers. Also ask whether the first check will cover a partial period and how the employer handles a start date that misses the cutoff.
Get the setup deadlines
Confirm the pay frequency and the deadline for direct-deposit enrollment. If your banking details are submitted after the cutoff, the first payment may use the employer’s alternative delivery method or a later payroll; the employer’s payroll team must explain its procedure. Do not assume that completing onboarding on your first day guarantees direct deposit on the first payday.
Questions for the new payroll team
- What is the first payday for a person starting on my date?
- Which dates will that payment cover?
- Will the first payment be for a full period or a partial period?
- What is the pay frequency after the first check?
- By what date must Form W-4 and direct-deposit information be submitted?
The Department of Labor’s state-payday information can provide context, but it is not a substitute for the employer’s current payroll calendar or current guidance from the state labor agency.
Build a transition calendar before the last day
Create a worksheet with one row for every expected deposit. Include the source, confirmation status and the period covered. A simple layout keeps estimates from looking like promises.
| Entry | Record |
|---|---|
| Former employer final wages | Confirmed or estimated issue date; pay-period start and end; expected net amount once the statement is available |
| Former employer leave payment | Eligible category and hours; rate; separate or combined payment; confirmed or estimated date |
| New employer first wages | First payday; covered dates; full or partial period; expected net amount |
| Bills during the gap | Due date and minimum amount for housing, utilities, insurance, debt and other fixed obligations |
| Uncertainty buffer | Cash retained for a late deposit, a smaller partial check or a correction |
Put the calendar dates beside your bill due dates. If a bill is due before a confirmed deposit, plan for it from money already available rather than from a payment that is only expected.

Budget from estimated net pay, not salary
Salary and hourly rate are gross figures. The amount you can spend is the deposit after withholding and other payroll deductions. Your first new-job check may also cover fewer dates than a normal check, so a full-period salary divided by the pay frequency can overstate what will arrive.
A practical cash-bridge method
- List cash currently available and subtract obligations due before the first confirmed new-job payday.
- Add only the net amount of the final old-job payment that payroll has confirmed or that you can reasonably estimate from a prior statement.
- Keep any potential leave payout in a separate, uncommitted line until eligibility and timing are documented.
- Estimate the first new-job deposit using the covered dates and the deductions shown on comparable statements, then mark the estimate as provisional.
- Retain a buffer for timing changes, a partial period or a correction after payroll reviews your records.
If the resulting cash balance is negative, identify the exact date and amount of the shortfall early. That gives you time to ask billers about due-date options or to discuss the timing with payroll instead of waiting for an expected deposit that may not arrive.

Withholding follows the W-4 and your pay
When you start, you complete Form W-4. It supplies information the employer uses to determine federal income-tax withholding. The Internal Revenue Service says withholding depends on your pay and the information on the W-4. A change in wage income or household job situation is a reason to review withholding rather than copying an old form automatically.
Check the period before judging the amount
First verify the pay-period start and end dates on the statement. A partial period can make a correct check smaller than a normal full-period check. Then compare the gross wages with the dates and rate you were promised, and review each listed withholding or other deduction. Ask payroll for an itemized explanation of anything you do not recognize.

Vacation pay can be withheld differently
Regular pay and vacation pay are subject to income-tax withholding. The IRS’s 2026 Publication 15 says an annual lump-sum payment for unused vacation, when paid in addition to regular wages for the vacation period, is treated as supplemental wages for withholding purposes. That classification determines withholding treatment; it does not by itself determine your final tax liability.

Because a one-time leave payment can be processed separately from regular wages, compare its statement with the explanation payroll gave you. A larger withholding amount is not, on its own, proof that the payment was calculated incorrectly.
Use the IRS estimator when the job change changes the picture
If your combined household income, number of jobs or other circumstances changed, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator or review a completed pay statement before revising Form W-4. The IRS warns that too little withholding can lead to a tax bill or penalty, while too much withholding can leave money inaccessible until a refund is issued. Make changes based on the whole-year situation, not solely on one unusually small or large check.
How to verify each payment
Final regular wages
- Match the statement’s pay-period dates to your final work date.
- Check that the rate and hours or salary portion agree with your records.
- Confirm that any known adjustment is identified separately.
- Compare the deposit date with the written payroll response and applicable state rule.
Unused leave
- Match paid hours to the eligible category, not merely the total portal balance.
- Check the rate used and whether the payment is separate from regular wages.
- Look for the withholding treatment described by payroll.
First new-job wages
- Match covered dates to the employer’s first-pay-period confirmation.
- Check whether the check is partial because of your start date or a payroll cutoff.
- Verify that direct-deposit details and Form W-4 were submitted by the required deadlines.
- Ask for an itemized explanation of any deduction or missing day.
Keep your written questions and the responses. A concise record makes it easier for payroll or a labor agency to identify whether the issue is a timing question, a policy question or a wage error.

Start with a written payroll inquiry
State the payment you expected, the pay-period dates, the amount or hours you believe are missing and the date you expected it. Attach the relevant statement or policy language. Ask for an itemized explanation and a corrected-payment date if payroll confirms an error.
Escalate using the correct authority
For unpaid final wages, the Department of Labor identifies its Wage and Hour Division and the state labor department as places workers can seek help. For leave payout, the state labor agency and the applicable written policy or agreement are especially important because federal law does not create a general entitlement. Use current state guidance rather than relying solely on an older table.
Preserve the record
Keep pay statements, time records, leave-balance screenshots, policy documents, your resignation or termination date, payroll emails and bank records showing the deposit. Do not delete access to a payroll portal until you have saved the documents you may need.
Tax documents after changing employers
Keep the Form W-2 from each employer for the tax year. The IRS says the W-2 reports wages and withholding and is furnished by January 31 for the preceding year. That deadline applies even when you no longer work for the employer that issues the form. A job change therefore can produce more than one W-2 for the same tax year; retain each one and use the amounts when preparing your return.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare the W-2 totals with your year-end pay statements and with any separate vacation payment. If a form is missing or appears inconsistent, contact the issuing employer and follow the IRS process for unresolved W-2 problems.
Quick Recap
A concise action plan
- Save recent statements and record your final work date, last pay-period dates and leave balances.
- Read the policy or agreement for each leave category and check the current rule of the state where you worked.
- Ask the former employer in writing for final-wage and leave-payment dates, categories, rates and delivery method.
- Ask the new employer for its first payday, covered dates, partial-period treatment, pay frequency and direct-deposit deadline.
- Place confirmed deposits and bill due dates on one calendar.
- Build the bridge budget from estimated net deposits and keep an uncertainty buffer.
- Complete Form W-4 using your current circumstances and review withholding if household wage income changed.
- Read both employers’ pay statements, challenge discrepancies promptly and preserve every response.
- Keep all W-2s issued for the tax year, including those from an employer you left.
