1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUntil your employer confirms both the net amount and the payment date of a salary revision or arrears, plan your ordinary spending as though that money is unavailable. Build a date-by-date cash-flow plan from money already in your account and income you can rely on, protect bills with the most serious consequences, and contact payroll and providers before a payment is missed.
When the payment arrives, check the calculation and deductions first. Then use it to repair the gap created by the delay before deciding what can go toward savings or other goals. Tax, employment and debt rules differ by country; the regulatory examples below are mainly from the UK, with one Canadian federal payroll example identified separately.

Start with money you can prove is available
A proposed pay rise, a promised correction, or an arrears calculation is not spendable cash until your employer confirms what you will receive and when. Treating uncertain money as unavailable is a conservative planning choice, not a universal legal rule about entitlement. It prevents a projected payment from being assigned to a bill that falls due before the money actually reaches your account.

- Cash already held: current-account balances and physical cash that you can use.
- Confirmed income: pay, benefits or other receipts with a known amount and date.
- Unconfirmed money: the gross or estimated revision, arrears, bonus or reimbursement that has not yet been confirmed in writing as a net amount with a pay date.
Keep the third line visible, but exclude it from the money available for rent, food or debt payments. If payroll later confirms a different amount or date, you can update the plan without having built commitments on an assumption.
What counts as confirmation?
Useful confirmation normally states the period covered, the gross adjustment, expected deductions or the method used to calculate net pay, and the payroll date. A verbal assurance such as “it is being processed” is a reason to follow up, not a reliable balance for your budget. Ask for the information in writing and save it with your payslips.
Map every commitment by date and consequence
A budget is a list of money available against commitments. The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) advises listing each payment organisation, amount due, due date and whether an amount is already behind. Use a notebook, a spreadsheet or a budget planner; the format matters less than seeing the timing.

| Entry | Record | Why it matters while pay is uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Housing | Rent or mortgage amount, due date, and any arrears | Missed housing payments can trigger serious contractual or legal consequences. |
| Utilities | Gas, electricity, water or heating charge and billing date | Service restrictions and extra costs may follow missed payments, subject to local rules. |
| Food and medication | Realistic amount needed until the next confirmed income | These are immediate living needs, not discretionary targets. |
| Work access | Transport, fuel, parking or required equipment | Protecting the ability to get to work can protect future income. |
| Insurance and childcare | Premium or fee, renewal date and cancellation terms | Changing cover or care can create a larger risk than the temporary saving. |
| Debt minimums | Creditor, minimum payment, due date and status | Record which debts are already late and ask about temporary arrangements before default. |
Make a calendar view as well as a total. A month can look affordable in aggregate but still fail if several direct debits leave the account before the next pay date. Mark the day each confirmed receipt arrives and the day each essential payment leaves. MoneyHelper’s guidance for variable income similarly recommends totalling regular outgoings and planning for periods with higher spending or lower income.
Put high-consequence bills first
When available cash is less than the total due, rank commitments by the harm that non-payment could cause, not by the order in which statements arrive. FCA UK examples of debts that commonly require priority include rent or mortgage, council tax or rates, and gas or electricity. Your country may classify obligations differently, and the same debt can have different consequences depending on the contract and your circumstances.

A practical priority test
- Could non-payment threaten housing, essential energy, personal safety or the ability to work? Put that commitment near the top and ask the provider about options immediately.
- Could a legal, enforcement or service consequence occur quickly? Check the notice and local rules rather than guessing from the bill label.
- Is there a required minimum payment that prevents a larger penalty? Confirm the minimum with the creditor and ask whether a temporary arrangement is available.
- Is the expense flexible without creating a greater risk? Delay or reduce it only after checking cancellation, interest, insurance and contract consequences.
Free debt advice is appropriate when the shortfall is more than a timing problem. The FCA directs UK consumers to MoneyHelper’s free debt-advice locator. A qualified adviser can help distinguish priority obligations and communicate with creditors; use the equivalent public or charitable service in your jurisdiction.
A repeatable interim-budget procedure
Use this sequence each time a revision or arrears payment is delayed.
- Set the planning period. Choose the date of the next confirmed income and the bills that must be paid before then. If the delay could extend beyond one pay cycle, create a second period rather than assuming it will be resolved quickly.
- Enter confirmed resources only. Add opening balances and confirmed receipts. Put the estimated revision or arrears in a separate “not available” line.
- List essentials in due-date order. Include housing, utilities, food, medication, childcare, transport to work, insurance and required debt minimums. Add any amount already overdue.
- Assign cash to the highest-consequence items. If the total is greater than available money, do not spread a small amount across every bill automatically. Contact providers and ask what arrangement protects the most important services.
- Freeze or trim flexible spending. Pause subscriptions, non-urgent purchases and optional upgrades that can wait. Keep a note of the date each pause can be reviewed.
- Test the calendar. Check the balance immediately before every payment date, including weekends and bank holidays where relevant. Move a payment only with the provider’s agreement; cancelling a direct debit without an arrangement can create fees or missed-payment records.
- Escalate before the first missed payment. Write to payroll for the amount, calculation and expected date. Tell affected providers what you can pay and ask what temporary change to timing or amount they can offer.
Contact payroll and providers early
Early communication gives payroll time to correct an error and gives providers a chance to discuss alternatives. The FCA says providers may be able to change how or when some payments are made, but any outcome depends on the provider and your circumstances.
Questions for payroll
- Which pay periods and contractual rates are included in the revision?
- What is the gross amount, and what deductions are expected?
- On which payroll run will the adjustment be paid?
- Will a separate payslip or written calculation be issued?
- If the amount is disputed, who owns the review and when will you receive the next update?
Keep the request factual. For example: “Please confirm the pay periods covered, gross and estimated net amount, deductions, payroll date and the contact responsible for resolving any discrepancy.” Attach the announcement, agreement, timesheets or earlier correspondence that establishes what was promised.
Questions for a bill provider
- Explain that your income correction is delayed and state the date and amount you can pay now.
- Ask whether the due date, instalment, payment method or fee can be changed temporarily.
- Request the arrangement and any effect on interest, credit reporting, service or insurance in writing.
- Record the representative’s name, date and reference number.
Do not promise a payment date that depends on unconfirmed arrears. Offer the date supported by your confirmed cash-flow plan.

Reduce spending without creating a larger problem
Discretionary spending is the first place to look, but every cut has a consequence. Delay restaurant meals, entertainment, non-urgent clothing, upgrades and optional purchases before cutting food, medication or work transport.
Be cautious with insurance and pensions. FCA guidance says to understand the consequences before changing pension arrangements and to contact an insurer before cancelling cover. A missed premium, loss of protection or tax charge can cost more than the temporary saving. Check childcare, tenancy and service contracts for notice periods before stopping payment.
A short-term “pause list”
- Subscriptions that can be restarted without a penalty.
- Planned purchases that are not needed for health, safety or work.
- Extra debt payments above the required minimum, unless a specific adviser has told you otherwise.
- Travel or delivery upgrades that can be replaced by a lower-cost option.
Keep a small, realistic amount for unavoidable variable costs. A plan that assumes zero flexibility often fails when transport, medicine or food costs change.
Choose a planning format that you will update
The FCA mentions a tool such as MoneyHelper’s Budget Planner or an adviser-provided tool. Choose the simplest option that shows dates, balances and consequences.
| Format | Cost | Best for | Limit to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper list and calendar | Free | A quick plan when privacy or offline access matters | Totals and date changes must be recalculated manually. |
| Spreadsheet or online planner | Often free; check the provider’s terms | Changing scenarios, running balances and sharing a plan with a partner | Protect access and avoid entering information you do not need. |
| Free debt adviser | Free through public or charitable services | Multiple priority debts, enforcement letters or a shortfall that will not close next month | Appointments may require documents and availability varies by location. |
Use one source of truth. Duplicating figures across several apps makes it easier to miss a changed due date or double-count an expected payment.

If pay is late, wrong or disputed
Acas guidance for Great Britain says employers should tell workers in writing as soon as possible when they know pay will be late or incorrect, explain how they plan to resolve it and make payments owed as soon as possible. It also says employers should give workers an opportunity to discuss financial difficulty caused by late pay. Acas summarises the approach plainly: “Employers should keep workers informed and fix the issue as soon as possible.”
Keep a chronological file containing:
- Payslips for the affected periods.
- The written pay-revision announcement, contract term or agreement.
- Timesheets or other records showing work or eligibility where relevant.
- Emails and letters with payroll, management and representatives.
- Bank charges or other costs directly caused by the late payment.
In Great Britain, a worker may be able to claim wages owed and losses caused by non-payment or late payment, such as bank charges. Deadlines, procedures and available remedies differ elsewhere, so use the employment authority, union or legal adviser for your jurisdiction. Documentation is useful even when the issue is resolved informally.
“Paid in arrears” can mean a normal payroll schedule
Payroll in arrears is not automatically back pay. It can simply describe a regular schedule in which an employer pays after the work period ends. Public Services and Procurement Canada explains that Canadian federal employees are paid for a two-week work period at the end of the following two-week period. Its guidance says new or returning federal public servants who do not receive pay on time can request an emergency salary advance.
That Canadian example applies to the federal public service, not to every Canadian worker or every employer. Check your contract and the relevant payroll authority to determine whether you are seeing a normal cycle, a first-pay delay or an unexpected amount owed.

- Match the periods. Confirm that every month, shift, allowance or rate change promised is included.
- Separate gross and net. The gross figure is not the amount available for household spending. Record the net deposit and each deduction shown.
- Check related adjustments. Benefits, payroll deductions, pension contributions or other income-linked items may change when pay is corrected.
- Repair the delay. Pay overdue essential bills and unavoidable late costs, and replace money borrowed from savings if that is appropriate.
- Reserve for known near-term costs. Set aside amounts already scheduled before treating the remainder as free cash.
- Choose a deliberate use for what remains. Options can include an emergency reserve, high-cost debt, a necessary purchase or a non-essential goal. The right choice depends on your current obligations, not a universal percentage.
UK tax treatment is jurisdiction-specific
HM Revenue & Customs’ Employment Income Manual, updated 11 September 2026, describes arrears as earnings paid after the date they should have been paid and says they are usually paid as a lump sum. For UK tax purposes, its guidance says arrears retain the character they would have had if paid on time and describes the tax liability as arising in the tax year of entitlement rather than the eventual payment year. This is UK guidance; do not apply it automatically in another country. Ask HMRC or a qualified adviser how your payroll should handle a particular correction.
Illustrative cash-flow decisions
The figures below are hypothetical examples of the method, not typical salaries or recommended amounts.
Example: the date, not the total, creates the problem
Suppose a household has £1,400 confirmed for the next four weeks and £1,250 of essential commitments, but £500 of those commitments fall before the next pay date. The projected £600 arrears payment is excluded because payroll has not confirmed it. The household can reserve the £500, trim flexible spending and ask two providers whether dates can be moved. If the arrears arrive later, the original calendar is updated; it was not used to justify spending early.
Recommended Free Tools
Example: a disputed amount
Suppose an employer confirms a revision for six months but the payslip includes only four. The employee records the missing periods, keeps the payslip and announcement together, and asks payroll for a written calculation and resolution date. The budget uses the net amount actually received, while the disputed balance remains outside available income.
Example: deciding what a lump sum repairs
Suppose a payment covers two overdue utility bills, a bank charge caused by the delay and money borrowed from an emergency fund. Those costs are identified before any amount is assigned to a holiday or investment goal. The remaining balance can then be allocated according to current debt costs, reserve needs and upcoming bills.
Country and rule checks before you act
Employment status, tax year, benefits, debt enforcement and payment protections vary by country and sometimes by region. Before relying on a rule, verify:
- Which employment authority covers your workplace.
- Whether the revision is contractual, discretionary, collectively agreed or still proposed.
- How your tax authority treats late-paid earnings and deductions.
- Whether a missed payment affects credit reporting, insurance or essential service access.
- Whether a public or charitable debt adviser is available and free in your area.
Use local advice for legal deadlines or a formal wage claim. The UK FCA, Acas, HMRC and MoneyHelper material cited here is not a substitute for rules in another jurisdiction.
