An overseas move is financially orderly when you complete three tasks in the right sequence: have each Indian bank account reviewed and redesignated when required, use a remittance route that matches your residence status and purpose, and determine Indian tax residence separately for every relevant financial year. Your destination country’s tax and reporting rules must then be checked locally, because they depend on the country, immigration status, work arrangement, income and assets.
Do not wait until the airport to start. Build an account inventory, record your travel days, ask an authorised dealer bank for its document list, and preserve evidence of Indian income and taxes. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Income Tax Department provide the governing framework, but a bank’s operating process and another country’s rules are fact-specific.

What changes when you leave India
Moving abroad can change how your Indian accounts are treated even if the account numbers, balances and standing instructions remain the same. The RBI’s account notification says: “When a person resident in India leaves India for a country (other than Nepal or Bhutan) for taking up employment or for carrying on business or vocation or for any other purpose indicating his intention to stay outside India for an uncertain period, his existing account should be designated as a Non- Resident (Ordinary) Account.”
This is a regulatory direction, not a universal bank checklist. The qualifying facts include your purpose for leaving and whether the move indicates an uncertain period abroad. A short trip, an assignment with a defined return, or a move to Nepal or Bhutan may be treated differently under the cited rule. Ask every bank, broker and financial institution holding your money what status update it requires.

Why the designation matters
An account’s resident or non-resident status affects the transactions the institution can process, the evidence it requests, tax withholding and the way money can be remitted. Leaving an ordinary savings account unchanged can create rejected transfers, incorrect interest treatment or a compliance query later. Updating the account does not itself decide your tax residence for the year; banking status and income-tax residence are separate questions.
Build an India-finance inventory before departure
Make one list of every relationship that could need a status, mandate or contact-detail change:
- savings, current, salary and fixed-deposit accounts;
- home, education or personal loans and their repayment accounts;
- brokerage, mutual-fund, insurance, pension and other investment accounts;
- rent, dividends, pension, interest or business receipts expected in India;
- recurring debits for utilities, insurance premiums, subscriptions, taxes and family support;
- debit cards, cheque books, net-banking users, powers of attorney and joint holders; and
- documents needed to prove identity, address, employment, tax status and the source of funds.
For each item, record the institution, account number, current status, balance, expected monthly inflow or outflow, a backup payment method and the service channel to contact from abroad. Do not assume that a bank’s change to one account automatically updates your deposits, investments or loan records elsewhere.
Ask for the bank’s process in writing
Before you travel, ask each institution:
- When it wants the status change submitted: before departure, after arrival or either;
- which forms, identity documents, overseas address and tax declarations it accepts;
- whether a physical visit, notarisation, attestation or in-person verification is required;
- how existing mandates, joint holders, cards and online access will work after redesignation;
- how interest, maturity proceeds, rent and other Indian receipts will be credited; and
- which branch or authorised dealer will handle future remittances and what records it will retain.
RBI directions establish the regulatory basis; they do not specify every bank’s operational workflow. Save the written response, submitted forms, acknowledgement and the date the institution confirms the change.
Understand NRO treatment after a qualifying move
An NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) account is a rupee account used for bona fide rupee transactions. RBI guidance describes crediting Indian income and paying Indian expenses through this type of account. Current income such as rent, dividends, pension and interest may be remitted subject to applicable tax and the bank’s requirements.
Remitting money from NRO funds
RBI guidance also describes remittance of up to USD 1 million per financial year (April–March) for bona fide purposes, subject to the authorised dealer bank’s satisfaction and other applicable conditions. The figure is a conditional regulatory ceiling, not an automatic entitlement or a promise that a particular transfer will be approved. The bank may require evidence of the source of funds, tax deducted or paid, declarations and other documents before processing the request.

Ask the bank to identify the route for each source of money rather than treating every balance as one category. A rent receipt, sale proceeds, inherited asset and accumulated savings can have different documentation and tax consequences. Keep the remittance application, bank advice, exchange-rate record, tax paperwork and proof of the underlying transaction together.

The cited RBI notification expressly excludes Nepal and Bhutan from the resident-to-NRO wording quoted above and refers to different treatment for those destinations. Do not apply the ordinary overseas-move instruction to a Nepal or Bhutan relocation without asking the bank how the rule applies to your facts.
Choose the remittance route by status, purpose and source
There are two different contexts that are often confused: a resident individual sending money under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), and a person resident outside India moving eligible rupee funds through NRO arrangements. They are not competing products.
| Question | Resident individual using LRS | Person resident outside India using NRO arrangements |
|---|---|---|
| Who it addresses | A resident individual in India | A person whose Indian banking is being handled as non-resident, with rupee funds in an NRO account |
| What determines eligibility | The permitted current- or capital-account purpose and the LRS conditions in force when the transfer is made | The nature and source of Indian funds, tax compliance, documents and the authorised dealer bank’s satisfaction |
| Published limit in the cited guidance | USD 250,000 per financial year, subject to the scheme’s terms and current rules | Up to USD 1 million per financial year (April–March) for bona fide purposes, subject to conditions |
| Typical handling question | Is the sender still resident and is the stated purpose permitted? | Is the balance eligible for remittance and have tax and source-of-funds requirements been met? |
If you are still resident before departure
The RBI Master Direction on LRS, updated 6 September 2024, describes permitted current- and capital-account remittances by resident individuals, with a USD 250,000 limit per financial year. Confirm the live direction, the purpose code and documentation with an authorised dealer bank before sending money. The limit and permission are not a blanket approval for every transfer, and a transfer made after your status changes should not automatically be described as LRS.
If you are already non-resident
Once the bank is handling your Indian funds as non-resident, ask about the NRO route rather than presenting the transfer as LRS. Explain whether the money is current income, a repayment, investment proceeds, a sale receipt or another asset-related amount. The bank will determine the applicable forms, tax evidence and approval path under the current RBI directions.
Plan transfers around the move date
Prepare two scenarios: money needed abroad before departure and money earned or received in India after redesignation. For each, write down the sender’s status on the transfer date, the account debited, the purpose, the source of funds, the intended recipient and the documents available. If a payment is urgent, ask the bank whether processing must begin before your travel date or can be completed remotely.

Determine Indian tax residence for each financial year
The Income Tax Department states: “The residential status of an individual is determined based on his physical presence in India during the relevant financial year.” A permanent-sounding move does not make someone non-resident for every purpose immediately. Count days and apply the law for each financial year (1 April to 31 March), including any prior-year look-back required by the applicable test.
Record the facts that the tests use
- Departure and return dates, including every entry and exit;
- total days physically present in India during the relevant financial year;
- days spent in India in the preceding four years where the test requires that history;
- purpose and nature of the overseas employment or assignment;
- Indian income relevant to any special rule, including the ₹15 lakh figure cited in the guidance; and
- citizenship, Indian-origin status and other facts that may trigger a special provision.
Keep passport stamps, immigration records, tickets, employer letters and a contemporaneous travel calendar. A calendar reconstructed months later is harder to defend than records made as you travel.
How to read the commonly quoted thresholds
| Figure in official guidance | How it should be used |
|---|---|
| 182 days | One statutory presence threshold in the general residence framework; it must be applied with the other conditions and exceptions for the relevant year. |
| 60 days plus 365 days in the preceding four years | A combined current-year and prior-four-year test that applies in the general framework subject to statutory exceptions and special rules. |
| ₹15 lakh | An income figure appearing in special residence provisions; it is not a universal “safe” income limit or a substitute for checking the complete rule. |
The overseas-employment exception and other special rules can alter how the day tests operate. The exact result depends on the year, the purpose of travel and the facts listed in the Income Tax Department’s residential-status guidance. Immigration permission, a visa label or your own use of “NRI” does not settle the tax answer.

Residence is not the same as taxability
Residence status determines the scope of income that may be taxable in India, but each receipt still needs classification. Separate Indian salary, rent, interest, dividends, pension, capital gains and business income; note tax deducted at source and advance or self-assessment tax paid. Then ask a qualified adviser how the destination country’s rules and any treaty interact with those receipts. Do not assume that a change in bank status removes an Indian tax filing or payment obligation.
A practical timeline for the move
Six to eight weeks before leaving
- Freeze the inventory. Download statements, note balances and maturities, and identify every Indian receipt and payment that will continue.
- Start bank conversations. Ask each institution about resident-to-NRO redesignation, account access, mandates, cards, deposits, loans and overseas contact details.
- Map cash flow. Estimate Indian rent, loan instalments, insurance, taxes, household costs and family support for at least the first several months.
- Build the day-count file. Enter every travel date for the current year and gather the preceding-four-year history where relevant.
- Separate transfer purposes. Label money needed abroad before departure, current Indian income and asset-related proceeds; do not combine them merely for convenience.
Two to four weeks before leaving
- Submit status requests. Provide the documents each bank requests and obtain an acknowledgement or case number.
- Test access. Sign in from the destination network if possible, confirm one-time-password delivery, update a reliable phone number and verify that a backup contact can respond to the bank.
- Confirm standing instructions. Check that loan, insurance, tax and utility debits have sufficient funding and that any mandate remains valid after redesignation.
- Ask about planned remittances. Give the authorised dealer bank the sender status, purpose, source and timing, and obtain its current document list and applicable charges.
- Archive evidence. Save forms, confirmations, statements, tax certificates and travel records in encrypted storage accessible from abroad.
On departure and during the first month abroad
- Record the actual exit date and retain the travel evidence.
- Notify banks of the confirmed overseas address and employment details if requested.
- Check that redesignated accounts accept expected Indian credits and pay scheduled debits.
- Reconcile each Indian receipt, tax deduction and transfer against your cash-flow plan.
- Obtain destination-country guidance on tax residence, foreign-account reporting, payroll withholding and declarations before the first local filing deadline.
Keep Indian bills and income running safely
A move does not automatically stop Indian obligations. Maintain a rupee liquidity buffer sized to known loan payments, insurance, taxes, property costs and family support. Use a separate ledger for Indian inflows and outflows so you can identify the source of every balance later. If rent or dividends are expected, confirm the payer’s updated bank details and whether tax is being deducted correctly.
For loans and recurring payments, verify the debit account, due date, late-payment consequence and a fallback funding method. A failed debit while you are changing phone numbers or account status is avoidable operational risk. Ask the lender whether a non-resident borrower must update contact or tax information independently of the bank holding the repayment account.

Destination-country duties cannot be assumed
The India-focused rules do not establish your new country’s tax residence, foreign-account reporting, payroll treatment, capital-gains rules or treaty relief. Those answers vary by country and by your immigration status, employer, income sources, account balances and time spent there. Use the destination government’s official tax and financial-regulator guidance, and obtain qualified cross-border advice when you have substantial Indian income, property, investments, business activity or more than one country of residence.

Prepare a factsheet for that review: arrival date, visa or work status, days in each country, Indian and foreign income, account locations, property, investments, taxes withheld and remittances. A precise factsheet helps an adviser distinguish an Indian banking question from a residence, treaty or reporting question in the destination country.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
Leaving a resident account unchanged
Symptom: the bank rejects a transfer or asks why your address and account status conflict. Fix: disclose the qualifying move, request the correct redesignation and keep the bank’s acknowledgement. Do not create a second account and ignore the first one.
Calling every outward transfer LRS
Symptom: a post-move NRO transfer is described as an LRS transaction. Fix: identify status on the transfer date, purpose and source of funds, then use the route the authorised dealer bank confirms. LRS is specifically for resident individuals and permitted transactions.
Treating the USD 1 million NRO figure as guaranteed
Symptom: a transfer is planned without tax documents or proof of source. Fix: ask what the bank needs, satisfy its review and treat the USD 1 million per-April–March figure as conditional.
Using departure day as the tax answer
Symptom: a person assumes that leaving in March automatically creates non-resident status. Fix: count physical presence for the entire relevant year, examine prior-year days and apply the overseas-employment and other special rules.

Ignoring small Indian receipts
Symptom: interest, rent or dividends are omitted because they are paid into an Indian account. Fix: reconcile all Indian income, tax deducted and tax paid, then determine filing and reporting requirements for the year.
Worked planning examples
Example 1: Employment move with a pre-departure transfer
A resident employee leaves India for an overseas job in September and needs funds abroad before the flight. The employee records the exit date, asks the bank when the move will be treated as qualifying, and discusses the pre-departure transfer while still resident. The bank reviews the stated purpose under the current LRS direction. After the move, the employee does not assume that later transfers use the same route; Indian salary arrears, interest and other receipts are handled through the redesignated account and reviewed under NRO rules.
Example 2: Indian rental income after relocation
A person living abroad continues to receive rent in India and pays a home-loan instalment and property tax locally. The person asks the bank to confirm NRO operation, keeps the lease, rent statements, tax deductions and loan records, and remits only after the authorised dealer confirms the documentation. The person separately applies the Indian day-count tests for the financial year and checks the destination country’s treatment of the rent.

A person relocating to Nepal or Bhutan sees that the cited RBI notification treats those destinations differently from other countries. Instead of applying the ordinary resident-to-NRO instruction, the person asks the bank for the rule and workflow applicable to that destination and keeps the response with the account records.
Records to retain
- Account inventory, statements and redesignation acknowledgements;
- forms, identity and address documents supplied to each institution;
- travel calendar, passport or immigration evidence and employer letters;
- rent, dividend, pension, interest and salary records;
- tax deducted-at-source certificates, returns, challans and payment confirmations;
- remittance applications, purpose declarations, bank advices and exchange-rate records;
- loan, insurance, utility and family-support payment confirmations; and
- destination-country filings, official guidance and professional advice.
RBI and tax directions can change. The official account and LRS directions and the Income Tax Department’s residential-status guidance accessed for this article were current as of 13 October 2026; verify the live rules and your bank’s requirements immediately before acting.
The safest plan is therefore year-by-year and account-by-account: redesignate qualifying accounts, use the remittance route that matches your status and purpose, preserve the evidence, and obtain destination-country advice for obligations India-focused guidance cannot answer.
