To place a stop-loss on an Indian stock, open your broker’s order ticket, select the correct NSE or BSE symbol and quantity, choose Sell for a long holding (or Buy to cover a short), then select either SL (stop-loss limit) or SL-M (stop-loss market, only where supported). Enter the trigger price; for an SL order, also enter a limit price. Submit the order and verify that the exchange accepted it and shows the expected pending status.

A stop-loss is not a guarantee that your shares will sell at the trigger price. SL converts to a limit order and can remain unfilled after a gap or fast move. SL-M generally seeks execution at the available market price, but it can fill far away from the trigger and is not available in every segment. The instructions and labels below reflect NSE rules and common Indian broker tickets; check the live ticket for the exact exchange, product and validity choices.

What a stop-loss order does

NSE keeps a stop-loss order in a separate stop-loss book until its trigger condition is met. For a sell stop, the last traded price (LTP) must reach or fall below the trigger. For a buy stop, the LTP must reach or rise above the trigger. Once triggered, the order is released into the regular order book.

That direction matters:

  • Long position: you own the shares and want protection against a decline, so the protective order is normally a sell stop below the current market price.
  • Short position: you have sold first and need to buy back if the price rises, so the protective order is normally a buy stop above the current market price.

The trigger is an activation condition, not necessarily the price at which a trade occurs. After activation, the order must still find a counterparty under the rules of the order type you selected.

SL versus SL-M: the choice that controls execution and price

Indian broker tickets usually present two stop-loss variants. Their names can differ slightly, but the mechanics are distinct.

Feature SL (stop-loss limit) SL-M (stop-loss market)
Prices entered Trigger price and limit price Trigger price only
After trigger Becomes a limit order at your specified limit Sends a market order when the segment and broker support it
Main advantage Sets a worst acceptable price boundary Usually prioritises getting a fill
Main risk Can remain open or expire unfilled if the market moves beyond your limit Can execute at a surprisingly poor price in a gap, thin book or rapid move
Options availability Used for options where a stop trigger is required NSE has discontinued SL-M for options
Price certainty Price control, but no execution certainty Execution intent, but no price certainty

For a protective sell SL order, the limit is generally set below the trigger so that a normal move can still trade through the order. For a protective buy SL order, the limit is generally above the trigger. The exchange and broker enforce tick-size and distance rules, so the permitted gap is not identical for every security or segment.

NSE’s worked example uses a stop-loss buy with a trigger of ₹93 and a limit of ₹95. While the market is at ₹90, the order is dormant. When the market reaches or exceeds ₹93, it is released as a limit buy at ₹95. A seller must still be available at ₹95 or better for a fill.

What you need before opening the order ticket

  • The exact security and exchange: NSE and BSE are separate selections, and liquidity or prices can differ.
  • Your position direction and quantity. Confirm whether you are protecting an existing long, covering a short, or placing a new conditional entry.
  • The broker’s product type, such as delivery or intraday. Product labels, margin requirements and allowed order types vary.
  • A trigger level chosen from your own risk plan rather than an exchange-mandated percentage. No single stop-loss percentage is universal for Indian stocks.
  • For SL, a limit price that leaves room for ordinary price movement without accepting a loss larger than you can tolerate.
  • Knowledge of the broker’s validity setting and cancellation rules. Day, immediate, or other labels can differ between platforms.

How to place a stop-loss order step by step

1. Open the order ticket and identify the contract

From your broker’s holdings or positions screen, open the order ticket for the exact stock. Select NSE or BSE deliberately, verify the symbol, series or contract where shown, and enter the quantity you intend to protect. Do not rely on a watch-list symbol if the same company has multiple instruments.

2. Choose the transaction side

Select Sell when protecting shares you own. Select Buy when covering a short position. If you are using a stop to enter a trade rather than protect an existing one, make sure the quantity and product type match that separate plan.

3. Select SL or SL-M only if the segment permits it

Choose SL when you want a trigger plus a limit boundary. Choose SL-M only when the broker and exchange segment show it as available and you accept market-price uncertainty. NSE has discontinued SL-M for options; an options ticket may therefore offer only an SL-limit structure for a stop order.

4. Enter the trigger price

For a long holding, enter a trigger below the current market price. For a short position, enter a trigger above it. The order remains dormant until the LTP reaches or passes that level in the required direction. If the ticket rejects the value, check whether you accidentally entered a trigger on the wrong side of the market or outside the instrument’s tick-size rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Enter the limit price for an SL order

An SL ticket normally requires both fields. A sell limit is generally below the sell trigger; a buy limit is generally above the buy trigger. The gap should be wide enough for ordinary fluctuations but not so wide that a fill would exceed your planned loss. The exact tick increment and maximum distance are controlled by exchange and broker validations.

6. Set validity and review the order

Select the validity option offered by your broker, review the estimated margin or funds, and recheck side, quantity, exchange, trigger, limit and product. Special-term orders such as stop-loss orders are not allowed during the NSE pre-open session, so a ticket may be unavailable or rejected at that time.

7. Submit and confirm the resulting status

After submission, confirm that the order was accepted rather than rejected. Before the trigger, it should normally appear as pending, open or waiting in the stop-loss book. After activation it may show as triggered, open in the regular book, partially filled, filled, cancelled or rejected. A notification alone is not proof that the full quantity sold; check the order history and the live position.

How to choose a trigger without a universal percentage

Neither NSE nor the material published by the securities regulator prescribes one stop-loss percentage or rupee distance for every Indian stock. A sensible trigger is an investor-specific risk decision. Consider these factors together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maximum rupee loss

Start with the largest loss you are prepared to accept on the position. Divide that amount by the number of shares to estimate the price distance you can tolerate, then check whether the resulting level makes sense for the stock. This is a personal risk-management method, not an exchange formula. Include the possibility of slippage and costs rather than assuming an exact fill at the trigger.

Volatility and ordinary noise

A highly volatile stock can trade through a very tight trigger during normal fluctuations and then recover. A wider, volatility-aware level may reduce accidental exits, but it also increases the potential loss per share. Compare the proposed trigger with the stock’s recent trading range and your holding period.

Liquidity and spread

Thinly traded shares can have a wide bid-ask spread and fewer buyers at each price. A limit placed only a tick below a sell trigger may never meet a buyer when the market moves quickly. Conversely, an extremely wide limit can accept a price you did not intend. Review the visible order book and typical volume, while remembering that displayed depth can disappear.

Support, resistance and the reason for the trade

If your investment thesis fails below a particular support area, a trigger just beyond that level may be more coherent than an arbitrary percentage. Do not place the stop exactly where routine intraday fluctuations are likely to reach it. The level should reflect why you own or short the stock, not a number copied from another security.

Position size

Reducing quantity can allow a wider, more realistic stop while keeping the total rupee risk within your limit. A tight stop is not automatically safer if it causes repeated exits or leaves an SL order unable to fill.

Illustrative order examples

Long stock using SL

Assume, purely as an illustration, that a share is trading near ₹500 and you own 100 shares. You decide that a sustained move below ₹480 invalidates your plan. You could enter a sell SL with a ₹480 trigger and a lower limit such as ₹475, subject to the broker’s permitted tick and distance rules. Until the LTP reaches ₹480 or lower, nothing is released. At the trigger, the order becomes a sell limit at ₹475; if the market jumps directly to ₹470 and no buyer is available at ₹475 or better, some or all of the order can remain open.

Short stock using SL

Assume you are short 100 shares near ₹500 and want protection above ₹520. A buy SL could use a ₹520 trigger and a higher limit, subject to the instrument’s rules. When the LTP reaches or exceeds ₹520, the buy limit enters the regular book. A rapid move above the limit can leave the short partially covered, exposing you to further losses until you manage the remaining quantity.

NSE’s documented trigger example

NSE describes a stop-loss buy with a ₹93 trigger and ₹95 limit. It stays inactive while the market is ₹90, then releases as a limit order when the market reaches or exceeds ₹93. The example demonstrates the sequence; it is not a recommendation for any security.

Why a stop-loss may not sell your shares

Price gaps

A stock can open or jump below a sell trigger, or above a buy trigger, without trading at every price in between. An SL order then enters the book at its limit. If the market is already beyond that limit, no matching counterparty may exist. SL-M, where available, is more likely to obtain a fill in a gap but can execute at an unexpectedly distant price.

Limit-price-protection rejection

NSE’s limit-price-protection checks can reject an SL-limit order after it is released if the buy limit is above the permitted high protection boundary or the sell limit is below the permitted low boundary. NSE advises avoiding extreme prices and keeping the difference between trigger and limit reasonable. A rejection means the order did not become a valid executable order; check the rejection reason and submit a compliant replacement if appropriate.

Thin liquidity and partial fills

Even when the limit is reachable, the available quantity may be smaller than your order. The exchange can fill part of the position and leave the balance open. Monitor the remaining quantity rather than assuming the original stop covers you.

Trading halts and session limits

A halt, circuit limit or temporary suspension can prevent matching. Stop-loss orders are not permitted in the NSE pre-open session, and a broker may defer or reject an order submitted then. Session transitions and broker validity settings can also cancel an order before it becomes active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wrong instrument, side or quantity

An order on BSE instead of NSE, a buy entered for a long holding, or a quantity that does not match your position will not provide the protection you intended. The order confirmation and position screen are the final checks.

What the regulator says about execution

SEBI’s investor education material explains that when a security or derivatives contract reaches or trades through the predetermined price, a stop-loss order converts to a market or limit order and is executed at the limit or better. It also warns: “There is no assurance therefore that the limit order will be executable since a security / derivatives contract might penetrate the pre-determined price, in which case, the risk of such order not getting executed arises, just as with a regular limit order.”

In practical terms, the trigger starts the next order; it does not guarantee a trade, a specific price or protection from a gap. Treat an open stop as one part of a risk plan, not as a substitute for monitoring position size and market conditions.

When SL-M is unavailable or unsuitable

For options, NSE has discontinued SL-M. If your options segment does not show a market stop, you need an SL-limit order with a trigger and a limit. Some brokers suggest placing the sell limit materially below the trigger or the buy limit materially above it to make execution more likely. That approach still has a hard limit, remains subject to limit-price-protection checks and does not guarantee a fill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For liquid stocks, an SL-limit may be appropriate when controlling the worst acceptable price matters more than certainty of execution. For a fast-moving or thinly traded instrument, a supported SL-M may better prioritise exit speed, but you must be able to tolerate the resulting price uncertainty. If neither choice fits your risk, reduce the position or use a different risk-control method rather than entering an order you do not understand.

After the trigger: monitoring and recovery

  1. Open order history immediately after an alert or sharp price move.
  2. Check whether the stop is still pending, has triggered into the regular book, is partially filled, fully filled, cancelled or rejected.
  3. If an SL-limit is open after a gap, decide whether to cancel and replace it under your current plan. Do not submit a duplicate without checking the remaining quantity.
  4. Reconcile the filled quantity with your holdings or short position. A partial fill leaves residual exposure.
  5. Review any rejection message, including tick-size, distance, protection or session reasons, before attempting a replacement.
  6. During a halt or exceptional move, follow the broker’s current instructions and reassess the position size; no stop order can create a tradable counterparty when the market is not matching.

Troubleshooting common ticket problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
“Invalid trigger” Trigger is on the wrong side of the market, has an invalid tick increment, or is outside segment rules. Confirm buy versus sell direction, current LTP, tick size and the broker’s permitted range.
SL-M option missing The exchange or product does not support stop-loss market orders; NSE options no longer support SL-M. Use the available SL-limit structure or consult the broker’s current segment help page.
Order rejected after trigger Limit-price-protection or another exchange validation rejected the released price. Read the rejection reason; avoid extreme trigger-limit gaps and submit a compliant order only after reassessing risk.
Order shows triggered but shares remain The limit order is open, partially filled, or the wrong quantity was entered. Inspect regular-book status, open quantity and the actual position.
No stop during pre-open NSE does not allow special-term stop-loss orders in the pre-open session. Wait for the regular session if appropriate and verify the broker’s session policy.
Stop disappeared Validity expired, the order was cancelled, or the broker changed it after a position action. Check order history, validity and whether a prior fill or corporate action altered the position.

A practical decision framework

  • Need a price floor or ceiling and can accept non-execution? Choose SL and set a sensible trigger-limit distance.
  • Need the highest practical chance of an immediate exit and accept an unknown fill price? Consider SL-M only where the broker and segment support it.
  • Trading options on NSE? Expect to use SL-limit because SL-M has been discontinued for that segment.
  • Trading a thin, volatile or halted stock? Assume slippage, partial fills or no fill are possible and size the position accordingly.
  • Unsure which exchange, product or validity applies? Stop before submitting and verify the live ticket and the broker’s current documentation.

Final pre-submit checklist

  • Correct NSE or BSE instrument and quantity.
  • Correct side: sell for a long holding, buy for a short.
  • Trigger is on the protective side of the current price.
  • SL versus SL-M choice matches the segment and your execution priority.
  • For SL, limit is placed on the correct side of the trigger and is not extreme.
  • Product type, validity, funds and margin are correct.
  • Order confirmation shows accepted status.
  • After any trigger, gap or partial fill, the remaining position and order status are checked.
