1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAs of 19 October 2026, you cannot pay a Latvian tax bill directly with Bitcoin, Ether, USDT, or another crypto-asset under any published Latvian procedure. You must calculate and declare the taxable amount to the State Revenue Service (VID), then pay the resulting liability in euros through the Electronic Declaration System (EDS) or by bank transfer to Latvia’s single tax account.
If VID or the State Treasury later launches a crypto-payment channel, do not rely on a wallet address, exchange listing, or social-media announcement. Use only a dated official notice that explains the asset, network, euro conversion, identification, confirmation, fees, and error handling.

Can I pay Latvian taxes in Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency?
No—not on the basis of the Latvian instructions published as of 19 October 2026. VID’s payment guidance states that taxes and fees are calculated and paid in euros and cents. It does not describe Bitcoin, Ether, stablecoins, or any other crypto-asset as an accepted payment instrument.
The current process has two separate parts:
- Tax calculation and reporting: declare taxable crypto income to VID.
- Settlement: pay the resulting euro amount through EDS or a transfer to the single tax account.
A crypto transaction sent to the tax account’s IBAN is not made valid merely because the sender labels it as a tax payment. The published account is a banking destination for euro payments, not a blockchain address.

What happens when you sell cryptocurrency in Latvia?
Crypto disposals are generally capital gains
VID treats an individual’s income from selling crypto-assets (also described in its guidance as virtual currency) as income from capital gains. From 2025, the personal income-tax rate applied to that crypto capital gain is 25.5%, according to VID guidance updated on 10 September 2026.
Buying crypto and holding it is not, by itself, a capital-gain disposal. A taxable disposal generally occurs when you sell the asset or otherwise exchange it in a transaction that produces disposal proceeds. Crypto received for goods, services, employment, business activity, or another income source is classified according to the economic nature of that receipt rather than automatically treated as a capital gain.
How the gain is calculated
The general calculation is:
Capital gain = disposal value − acquisition value − directly related expenses
Disposal value is the amount received when you sell or otherwise dispose of the asset. Acquisition value is what you paid to obtain it. Related expenses can include transaction costs that are directly connected with the purchase or disposal. If the original acquisition value cannot be determined, VID says to use zero.
Use the euro value applicable to the relevant transaction date and keep the evidence supporting that valuation. A gain is not the same as the total sale proceeds: the acquisition cost and allowable related expenses matter when they can be established.
Which filing deadline applies to crypto gains?
Latvia uses a quarterly threshold to determine whether you make a capital-gain declaration after each quarter or use the annual schedule. The threshold concerns your total income from capital-asset transactions in that quarter; it is a filing-timing threshold, not a tax-free allowance.

| Quarterly capital-asset transaction income | Declaration timing | Payment timing |
|---|---|---|
| More than EUR 1,000 | File the DK period declaration of income from capital gains by the 15th day of the following month. | Pay the calculated liability by the 23rd day of the following month. |
| EUR 1,000 or less | Use the annual capital-gain declaration by 15 January of the following year. | Pay by 23 January of the following year. |
For example, a quarter whose capital-asset transaction income exceeds EUR 1,000 triggers the next-month filing and payment deadlines. A quarter at or below EUR 1,000 is handled under the annual 15 January/23 January schedule described by VID. The declaration still needs to identify the crypto-asset income in the prescribed form.

Step 1: Identify every taxable disposal
- List each sale, crypto-to-crypto exchange, or other transaction that disposed of an asset during the relevant period.
- Separate ordinary purchases and holdings from transactions that generated disposal proceeds.
- Flag crypto received for work, goods, services, or another source of income for classification under that source’s rules.
Do not wait for a crypto-payment option before reporting a disposal. The tax obligation arises from the taxable income and the applicable filing schedule, not from the payment method you would prefer to use.
Step 2: Build a euro calculation that can be defended
- Export exchange statements covering purchases, sales, conversions, fees, and dates.
- Collect wallet records, transaction hashes, purchase confirmations, sale confirmations, and records of transfers between your own wallets and exchanges.
- Record the euro valuation used for each disposal and keep the source or calculation method used to establish it.
- Subtract acquisition value and directly related expenses from disposal value for each relevant transaction, then total the results for the declaration period.
- If an acquisition value genuinely cannot be determined, apply VID’s stated zero-value treatment rather than inventing a cost basis.
VID says supporting transaction documents do not have to be attached to the DK declaration. They must nevertheless be retained for at least five years and produced if VID requests them.
Step 3: Submit the DK declaration
Use VID’s DK “period declaration of income from capital gains” and identify the crypto-asset income in the prescribed fields. Choose the quarterly or annual schedule based on the EUR 1,000 threshold and the period in which the disposals occurred.
Check that the declaration’s euro total agrees with your transaction worksheet before submitting. Keep a copy of the submitted declaration, the calculation supporting it, and the confirmation showing that EDS accepted the filing.
Step 4: Pay the euro liability through EDS or a bank
VID’s published route is the EDS Payments section or an internet-bank transfer to the single tax account. The published account details are:
Rank #3
| Field | Published detail |
|---|---|
| Recipient | State Budget (VID) |
| Recipient institution | State Treasury |
| Registration number | 90000010008 |
| IBAN | LV33TREL1060000300000 |
| BIC | TRELLV22 |
| Payment currency | Euros and cents |
Use the payment reference or other fields requested in EDS or your bank so the payment can be matched to your liabilities. VID allocates payments under its published first-in, first-out (FIFO) rules, so an existing older debt can be settled before a newer crypto-related liability.
If your funds are held in dollars, a stablecoin, or another non-euro asset, convert them through a lawful financial channel before paying. VID’s instructions describe conversion into euros for payment; they do not treat a crypto transfer as a substitute for that conversion.
Can I send USDT or another token to the Latvian tax office?
Not under the currently published procedure. USDT is a crypto-asset, and the single tax account is an IBAN, not a token deposit address. Sending tokens to an address you find online could leave the payment uncredited, irreversible, or impossible to attribute to your tax account.

Until VID, the State Treasury, or a binding government notice publishes an operational crypto-payment method, pay in euros and retain the bank or EDS confirmation as your proof of settlement.
What Latvia’s 2026 crypto reporting rules change
Amendments effective 1 January 2026 require crypto-asset service providers to collect and report transaction information to VID for international exchange with other tax administrations. The Finance Ministry’s 2025/2026 policy summary describes this as expanded reporting by service providers.
That reporting can make previously undisclosed transactions easier for tax authorities to identify. It does not create a payment channel, change the euro requirement for settling a tax bill, or replace your obligation to file the appropriate declaration.

If Latvia introduces direct crypto tax payments
A future option would need more than a public wallet address. Before using it, look for a dated notice from VID, the State Treasury, or another legally authorized Latvian body that specifies the complete operating rules.

Confirm custody and the intermediary
The notice should state whether crypto goes directly to the State Treasury or first to a regulated intermediary that converts it into euros. It should also identify which party is responsible for custody, conversion, sanctions screening, and a transaction that is delayed or lost.
These questions are a practical due-diligence checklist, not announced Latvian rules. Do not treat a provider’s marketing page or an exchange’s new withdrawal destination as evidence that VID accepts crypto payments.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Using a crypto address found online
Why it fails: an address may be unofficial, obsolete, on the wrong network, or unrelated to your tax liability.
Recovery: stop sending additional funds, preserve the transaction hash and communications, and contact the official VID or State Treasury channel named in the applicable notice. Do not assume a completed blockchain transaction can be reversed.

Paying a euro liability with a token transfer
Why it fails: the current single tax account accepts euro banking payments, not crypto deposits.
Recovery: arrange a euro payment through EDS or a bank and keep evidence of both the attempted transfer and the valid euro settlement. If a deadline is near, prioritize the accepted euro payment and address the failed attempt separately.
Confusing provider reporting with tax payment
Why it fails: a service provider’s report to VID is information exchange, not a payment credited to your account.

Recovery: complete your own calculation, file the DK declaration, and pay the assessed amount through the accepted euro route.
Missing the filing or payment date
Why it fails: the EUR 1,000 quarterly threshold changes the declaration schedule, and the filing and payment dates are different events.
Recovery: submit the overdue declaration and pay the liability as soon as possible through EDS or the single tax account. Keep the submission and payment confirmations, and follow any further instructions VID issues about the late account.
Failing to preserve acquisition evidence
Why it fails: without a defensible acquisition value, VID’s stated fallback is zero, which can increase the calculated gain.

A practical decision path for taxpayers
- Have you disposed of crypto or received it as income? If no, a purchase or holding alone is not a capital-gain disposal. If yes, classify the receipt or disposal.
- Can you establish disposal value, acquisition value, and related expenses in euros? If yes, calculate the gain. If acquisition value cannot be established, apply VID’s zero-value rule.
- Did quarterly capital-asset transaction income exceed EUR 1,000? If yes, use the following-month filing and payment deadlines. If no, use the annual 15 January and 23 January schedule.
- Has VID officially announced a crypto-payment channel? As of 19 October 2026, no published procedure does so. Therefore file through EDS and pay euros to the single tax account.
- Has a future notice supplied all operational details? Verify the asset, network, conversion timestamp, identity requirements, receipt standard, fees, and error rules before sending anything.
What to keep in your records
- Exchange statements showing purchases, disposals, conversions, and fees.
- Wallet addresses and transaction hashes linking transfers to your records.
- Purchase and sale confirmations and the euro valuation used on each relevant date.
- The worksheet showing disposal value, acquisition value, expenses, and the resulting gain.
- The submitted DK declaration and EDS acceptance confirmation.
- The bank or EDS payment confirmation and any allocation or account statement.
- Correspondence with VID or a regulated intermediary about an error, refund, or payment reference.
Keep these records for at least five years, even though VID says they do not need to be attached to the DK declaration. The records are what allow you to explain the calculation and prove how the payment was matched.
