How to Pay Large UPI Transactions Safely in India: Limits, Checks and Alternatives

For most UPI payments in India, the ordinary ceiling is ₹1 lakh per transaction. Higher ceilings exist only for specified categories and purposes, so an amount below a published special limit may still be rejected by your bank or app. Before you approve any large payment, match the beneficiary name, amount and purpose; a UPI payment cannot be stopped after it is initiated.

If the amount or category is not supported, use a bank transfer that fits the transaction. RTGS accepts payments of ₹2 lakh or more with no RBI-set maximum and runs 24x7x365; NEFT uses half-hourly batches; IMPS allows up to ₹5 lakh per transaction on most channels, subject to your bank’s own limit.

What is the UPI limit for a large payment?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) lists ₹1 lakh per transaction as the ordinary UPI limit. That is a system-level reference point, not a guarantee that every bank, account, app or payment channel will allow the full amount. Your sending bank can set a lower customer or channel limit, and the amount shown in your app is the practical limit for that payment.

NPCI’s UPI FAQ also lists higher limits for particular uses: up to ₹2 lakh for certain specified categories, and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO applications and the Retail Direct Scheme. A later NPCI circular creates enhanced merchant-category limits, including ₹5 lakh per transaction for several eligible categories, with category-specific 24-hour cumulative caps. Those ceilings are activated through merchant-category and purpose codes; they do not turn every person-to-person transfer into a ₹5 lakh UPI payment.

In other words, “Can I pay more than ₹1 lakh by UPI?” has a conditional answer: only when the payment’s category, purpose, bank and channel all support a higher ceiling. Check the amount your app permits immediately before sending and ask the bank if the screen is unclear. The official references are the NPCI UPI FAQs and the NPCI FY 2025–26 higher-limit circular.

UPI, RTGS, NEFT and IMPS limits compared

Choose a payment rail by considering the amount, whether a minimum applies, how quickly it settles, whether you can verify the account name, and which channels your bank makes available. The following figures are from NPCI and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI); bank-level limits can be lower.

Rail Official limit or processing rule What it means in practice
UPI, ordinary transaction Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction according to NPCI’s FAQ. This is the ordinary system limit. Your bank or app may allow less, and the full amount is not available for every account or transfer type.
UPI, specified categories NPCI lists up to ₹2 lakh for certain categories and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments. A FY 2025–26 circular adds enhanced merchant-category limits, including ₹5 lakh per transaction for several eligible categories and category-specific 24-hour cumulative limits. Eligibility depends on the merchant category and purpose code. Do not use a special-category ceiling for an ordinary person-to-person payment.
IMPS NPCI states a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit on channels other than SMS and IVR. The participating bank can impose a lower limit. Confirm the limit and channel in your bank’s app or with its support team.
RTGS RBI sets a minimum of ₹2 lakh, no RBI-set maximum, and 24x7x365 availability with real-time, transaction-by-transaction settlement. The bank may apply its own customer, channel or security controls. RTGS settlement is final and irrevocable, so verify before authorising.
NEFT RBI describes batch processing; its FAQ specifies 48 half-hourly batches operating 24x7x365. It suits a transfer where half-hourly batch processing is acceptable. Check your bank’s cut-off display, channel and any customer limit.

RBI’s RTGS FAQ, Payment and Settlement Systems FAQ, and NPCI’s IMPS overview contain the applicable system descriptions.

How to check whether your UPI payment is eligible

1. Identify the payment type

Determine whether you are paying an individual, a business, an IPO, the Retail Direct Scheme or another regulated category. A normal friend-to-friend or customer-to-business transfer should be treated as an ordinary UPI transaction unless your bank explicitly identifies it as an eligible higher-limit category.

2. Read the app’s limit and error message

Enter the amount without authorising it. Look for the maximum permitted amount, a daily or 24-hour cumulative cap, and any warning that the beneficiary or merchant is not eligible. A rejected amount is a signal to change rails or contact the bank, not to keep retrying with guesses.

3. Confirm both the bank limit and the channel

System ceilings and bank ceilings are different. A bank may set separate limits for its mobile app, internet banking, branch, debit-account type or newly added beneficiary. Ask the sending bank which route supports the amount and whether a cooling period or additional authentication applies.

4. Do not split payments to evade a control

Sending several smaller UPI payments solely to get around a per-transaction or bank limit is not a safe workaround. It can trigger fraud controls, leave you with more opportunities to select the wrong recipient, and may violate the bank’s terms or the purpose of a category limit. If UPI will not accept the amount, use RTGS, NEFT or IMPS as supported by your bank, or ask the bank for an approved process.

How to verify the recipient before paying

The beneficiary check is the most important step because an authorised UPI transfer cannot be stopped. NPCI requires the ultimate beneficiary bank name to be displayed for person-to-person and person-to-person-to-merchant transactions. Compare what your app displays with a trusted invoice, contract or contact record obtained independently of the payment request.

  1. Obtain the details independently. Call the recipient using a phone number already saved in your records, visit the business’s known website or use an invoice received through an established channel. Do not rely on a new number, forwarded message or QR image supplied in an urgent request.
  2. Enter the identifier carefully. Use the intended UPI ID, account number and IFSC, or scan a QR code only when you have verified where it came from. Check spelling, punctuation and unexpected characters in the displayed ID.
  3. Read the beneficiary name and bank name. Stop if the name is missing, different, truncated in a way you cannot explain, or associated with an unexpected bank. A familiar-looking logo or a correct amount does not prove that the account belongs to the intended recipient.
  4. Confirm the purpose and amount. Match the payment against the invoice, purchase order, rent notice or other reason. Recalculate the amount, including any fees, before the final authorisation screen.
  5. Authorise only after the final review. Treat the last screen as a point of no return. If any detail changed after you entered it, cancel and verify again through an independent contact method.

For RTGS and NEFT, RBI directed participating banks to offer beneficiary-account-name lookup using the account number and IFSC through internet banking, mobile banking and branches by 1 April 2025. The facility helps identify the account name; it does not establish that the person requesting money is the person who owns the intended business or obligation. Confirm availability in your bank’s channel. See the RBI beneficiary-name lookup notification.

UPI security rules for a high-value payment

A UPI PIN authorises a debit

Your UPI PIN is used to approve money leaving your account. It is never needed to receive a refund, prize, salary, transfer or “cashback.” NPCI’s fraud guidance states: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” No bank representative or support agent should ask you to disclose it.

A QR code is not a receiving button

NPCI warns that “scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is only meant for making payments, not receiving them.” A request to scan a code and enter your PIN to get money back is a payment request. Decline unexpected collect requests, refund links and reward prompts, and contact the supposed sender through a known channel.

Ignore urgency and authority pressure

Fraudsters often create a deadline, claim an account will be blocked, or impersonate a supplier, employer, bank or government office. Pause the transaction, independently look up the organisation’s official contact details and ask for written confirmation of the amount and beneficiary. Do not let a caller stay on the line while you approve a large transfer.

Use the official app and device controls

Install the bank or UPI app from the device’s official app store, keep the operating system and app updated, and protect the phone with a screen lock. Do not use a remote-control or screen-sharing app at another person’s direction. Turn on transaction notifications so an unexpected debit is visible quickly.

What to do when a UPI payment is pending, failed or wrong

Pending transaction

Do not immediately repeat the payment. Save the transaction reference, date, amount and beneficiary details, then check the status in the app and your account statement. A second payment can create a duplicate debit if the first later completes. Use the bank’s official support route to ask for the status.

Failed or reversed transaction

Record the error message and reference number. Check whether the debit was reversed before trying again. If the account was debited but the recipient did not receive funds, raise a complaint with the participating bank through its UPI app or published support channel and provide the reference number.

Wrong recipient or unauthorised payment

Contact your bank immediately through its official app, card or account documentation, not through a number in a message. Report the transaction, preserve screenshots and messages, and request the bank’s dispute and fraud procedure. A UPI transfer cannot be stopped once initiated, so recovery is not guaranteed; speed and complete records matter.

When RTGS is the better choice

RTGS is designed for a transfer of ₹2 lakh or more. RBI says it has no RBI-set upper ceiling, is available 24x7x365 and settles each transaction individually in real time. It can be a practical choice for a property-related payment, business settlement or other large bank transfer when the beneficiary’s account and IFSC have been independently confirmed.

Enter the beneficiary account number and IFSC exactly, use the account-name lookup if your bank provides it, and review the beneficiary, amount and purpose before submitting. RTGS settlement is final and irrevocable under the RBI description, so an incorrect account number is not something to “cancel” later. Your bank may still require a branch visit, a higher authentication step, a newly added-beneficiary waiting period or a lower channel limit.

When NEFT is the better choice

NEFT is suitable when you do not need RTGS’s individual real-time settlement and can accept batch processing. RBI describes 48 half-hourly batches operating 24x7x365. The exact credit time can depend on the receiving bank and the status shown by your sending bank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the same beneficiary controls as for RTGS: obtain the account number and IFSC independently, check the returned account name where available, and reconcile the amount with the invoice. Ask the bank whether a newly added beneficiary, account type or channel has a lower limit.

When IMPS is the better choice

IMPS provides an instant alternative when the amount is within the bank’s IMPS limit. NPCI states a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit for channels other than SMS and IVR, but participating banks can set lower limits. Confirm the available ceiling in your app before entering the PIN.

IMPS is still an irrevocable payment decision in practical terms: a fast rail does not provide a safety reversal for a mistaken beneficiary. Apply the same independent verification and final-screen review used for UPI.

A safe workflow for paying a large amount

  1. Write down the obligation. Record who should be paid, why, the exact amount, due date and the source of the beneficiary details.
  2. Verify the request independently. Contact the intended person or organisation through a known phone number or established account. Treat changed bank details as a new fraud risk, even when the invoice looks familiar.
  3. Check the available rail. Compare the amount with your app’s UPI limit and, if relevant, the category and purpose code. If it does not fit, check RTGS, NEFT and IMPS limits in the bank’s channel.
  4. Confirm beneficiary information. For UPI, read the displayed beneficiary and bank name. For RTGS or NEFT, enter the account number and IFSC and use the account-name lookup if offered.
  5. Secure the session. Use your own device and network, close remote-access tools, and never disclose the UPI PIN, password or one-time authentication code.
  6. Perform the final check. Compare the name, bank, account or UPI ID, amount and purpose one last time. Stop if anything is unexpected.
  7. Save evidence. Keep the transaction reference, confirmation screen, invoice and communications until the recipient confirms receipt and your statement reconciles.
  8. Escalate anomalies promptly. For pending, failed, duplicate, wrong or unauthorised payments, contact the bank through its official support route and provide the reference number.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming ₹5 lakh is a general UPI ceiling: the higher amount applies only to specified categories and coded purposes, not every transfer.
  • Confusing a system limit with your bank’s limit: an NPCI or RBI ceiling is not a promise that your account or channel enables that amount.
  • Trusting the request instead of the beneficiary: a genuine-looking invoice, QR code or caller can contain a changed account.
  • Entering a PIN to receive money: PIN entry authorises a debit.
  • Retrying a pending payment: wait for the status and check whether the account was debited before making another attempt.
  • Using multiple transfers to bypass controls: choose an approved rail or ask the bank how to proceed instead.
  • Believing name lookup is a guarantee: it confirms the account name returned for the details entered, not the identity or honesty of the person requesting payment.

Questions to answer before you press Pay

  • Is this an ordinary UPI payment or an eligible special category?
  • Does the sending bank and this channel allow the full amount and any required 24-hour cumulative total?
  • Did I obtain the beneficiary details independently?
  • Does the displayed name and bank match the intended recipient?
  • Is the amount and purpose exactly what I authorised?
  • Am I being asked for a PIN, QR scan, remote access or urgent action that I did not expect?
  • Do I know how to reach the bank through its official support channel if the status is pending or wrong?
