You can pay for coffee with bitcoin in seconds when the café presents a Lightning payment request. Before ordering, load bitcoin into a wallet that can send Lightning payments. At the register, select Bitcoin or ask the cashier to enable it, scan the displayed Lightning QR code (or paste its invoice text), review the amount and expiry, and tap Pay or Send. Wait for the register to confirm the payment and keep the wallet receipt until your order is complete.
What you need before you reach the counter
Lightning payments do not come directly from an empty wallet. You need three things in place:

- A Lightning-enabled wallet: The wallet must be able to send Lightning payments, not merely hold bitcoin on the base Bitcoin network.
- A bitcoin balance: Add bitcoin before you order. Funding methods and settlement times depend on the wallet, so do not assume you can complete setup while a line is waiting.
- A café that presents a Lightning request: Ask whether the shop accepts Bitcoin or specifically Lightning. Acceptance varies by merchant, point-of-sale system and geography.
Open the wallet before joining the queue, confirm that it shows spendable funds and make sure your phone has enough battery and a working camera. A Lightning payment normally needs an internet connection so the wallet can communicate with the Lightning network.

The café’s register creates a Lightning invoice for the exact order. An invoice is a payment request containing the amount, destination, a payment hash and an expiry. The register commonly encodes that request as a QR code. Your wallet reads the invoice, checks its details, finds a route through the Lightning network and sends the payment. The recipient can verify settlement using the invoice’s cryptographic preimage and payment hash.

Bitcoin Design describes an invoice as “the basis of payment requests on lightning” and as a “single-use payment request” with a built-in expiry. Its current guide says the default expiry is 60 minutes, although a merchant or wallet can use a different setting. A QR invoice is therefore not a reusable account number: once paid or expired, it should not be reused.
Step-by-step: pay at a QR-code checkout
- Ask for Bitcoin or Lightning. Tell the cashier you want to pay with Lightning before the order is finalized. Some systems require the seller to select Bitcoin; on supported Square Register checkouts, the seller selects Bitcoin or the buyer chooses it on the customer-facing display.
- Let the register display the request. The POS should show a Lightning QR code and, in some implementations, the invoice as text. Confirm that the screen shows the correct order total before scanning.
- Open the wallet’s send or scan function. Choose the wallet option labeled Scan, Pay, Send or similar. Do not use a generic Bitcoin-on-chain receive screen; the payment request must be a Lightning invoice.
- Scan the entire QR code. Hold the phone steady and include all four corners of the code in the camera frame. The wallet should decode the invoice and display its amount, destination or merchant information and expiry.
- Use invoice text if scanning fails. Copy the complete invoice string from the register and paste it into the wallet’s send field. Do not retype a long invoice manually; one missing character can invalidate it.
- Inspect the payment details. Check that the amount matches the order, the merchant description is plausible, the destination information is what the wallet provides and the expiry has not passed. Stop if the wallet shows an unexpected amount or an invoice that is already expired.
- Confirm the payment. Tap Pay, Send or the wallet’s equivalent confirmation control. The wallet will attempt to route the payment through Lightning.
- Wait for both confirmations. A successful wallet status is important, but the café also needs its register to update. The seller’s display should show that the Lightning payment settled. Keep the wallet receipt or transaction record until you receive the drink and any change or adjustment is resolved.
How to read the invoice before you approve it
A Lightning invoice is more than a QR image. The encoded request carries information that your wallet decodes for review:
- Amount: The bitcoin-denominated value requested for the order. If the amount does not match the printed or displayed total, ask the cashier to regenerate the request.
- Destination: The receiving node or payment destination identified by the invoice. Wallets may present this as a destination name, node information or an abbreviated identifier.
- Payment hash: A unique reference that lets the recipient identify the payment and verify settlement.
- Expiry: The deadline after which the invoice is no longer valid. Bitcoin Design’s current guide gives 60 minutes as the default; the actual invoice may specify a shorter or longer period.
- Description: A merchant note or order description. It should make sense for the coffee purchase and help you detect a wrong or substituted request.
Never treat a QR code’s appearance as proof that it belongs to the café. The wallet’s decoded details are the information to review. If a cashier asks you to pay a second invoice after your wallet reports success, show the receipt and have the POS checked before sending another payment.

Can you tap your phone instead of scanning?
Sometimes. Square documents an NFC flow on the second-generation Square Register when the customer uses a Lightning-enabled wallet. In that setup, the register can accept an NFC tap from the wallet instead of requiring a camera scan.

This capability is not documented for Square Terminal, Square Stand or mobile devices. It also requires both compatible POS hardware and a wallet that supports the Lightning NFC interaction. A phone’s general contactless capability does not guarantee that a particular wallet or register will recognize the tap.
- Ask the cashier whether the register supports Lightning NFC.
- Open the Lightning wallet and leave it ready to authorize a payment.
- Hold the phone at the register’s NFC area when prompted.
- Review the amount and merchant information shown by the wallet.
- Approve the payment and wait for the register’s confirmation.
If the tap is not recognized, switch to the QR workflow. Do not repeatedly tap or approve duplicate requests without checking whether the first attempt settled.
QR checkout, NFC checkout and reusable payment identifiers

Lightning Address and LNURL-Pay are not the same as the QR invoice shown for a normal café checkout. They can provide a static identifier that obtains a fresh invoice, while a register generally creates an amount-specific request for each sale.
What to do when the QR code will not scan
Most scan failures are display or camera problems rather than a failed payment. Work through these fixes in order:

- Increase the register screen’s brightness.
- Zoom out or ask the cashier to make the entire QR code visible; cropped corners prevent decoding.
- Clean the phone camera lens and hold the phone a little farther away.
- Disable glare by changing the phone angle rather than covering the screen.
- Use the invoice text field if the register provides one. Copy and paste the complete string into the wallet.
- Ask the cashier to cancel and generate a fresh invoice if the code is damaged, truncated or no longer visible.
Gillespie Coffee, which uses a Strike checkout, advises customers that its screen displays both a QR code and an invoice string. That dual display is useful because text entry remains available when lighting, reflections or camera focus make scanning unreliable.
What to do when a Lightning invoice has expired
An expired invoice cannot be revived by scanning it again. Ask the cashier to generate a new invoice for the same order, then pay the new request. Compare the new amount and description with the order before approving it.
Do not send a second payment merely because the first invoice is no longer visible. First check the wallet’s transaction history. If the wallet shows a pending or successful payment, give the cashier the payment reference and ask the POS operator to verify settlement. Paying a replacement invoice without checking can result in two completed payments.
When the wallet says paid but the register has not updated
Keep the wallet open on the completed payment screen and wait briefly. Lightning settlement and POS display updates can arrive at slightly different times. Then ask the cashier to verify the register rather than generating a new invoice immediately.

Square says its buyer and seller displays show confirmation after a Lightning payment. Its support documentation also says a transaction that takes more than five minutes can be declined and requires a new cart or invoice. If the register reports a decline or the cashier confirms that the request timed out, follow the wallet’s final status before trying again:
- Successful or settled: Show the receipt and have the merchant reconcile the POS. Do not pay a second time unless the first payment is confirmed as reversed or not received.
- Failed or canceled: Ask for a new invoice and retry after checking your connection and wallet balance.
- Pending: Wait for the wallet’s status to resolve and ask the cashier to check the payment hash. Avoid closing the wallet or deleting its history.
Why a Lightning payment can fail

How to avoid paying the wrong invoice
- Use the amount shown by the wallet, not a verbal amount alone. Ask the cashier to correct any mismatch before you authorize.
- Check the description. A note such as an order number or café name helps distinguish the current purchase from an old request.
- Confirm the expiry. A request that has been sitting on a screen for a long time may no longer be valid.
- Pay only once. Keep the wallet receipt and payment hash until the order is complete.
- Protect your wallet approval. Never hand an unlocked phone to someone who could approve a different invoice.
- Keep a backup payment method. A café may lose connectivity, change POS systems or stop accepting Lightning without notice.
Merchant and geography differences
There is no universal café checkout experience. One shop may use a register that generates an invoice automatically; another may display a payment request from a separate service; a third may accept Bitcoin only on the base chain or may not accept it at all. Ask before ordering, especially when traveling.
On supported Square Register checkouts, the seller selects Bitcoin or the buyer selects it on the customer-facing display, after which the register presents a Lightning QR code. The documented NFC option is narrower: it requires second-generation Square Register hardware and a Lightning-enabled wallet. The same behavior should not be assumed on other Square devices or on a phone-based checkout.

A café’s QR invoice normally identifies one amount and one payment request. It is intended for one payment and carries an expiry. A Lightning Address or LNURL-Pay identifier works differently: it is a reusable address-like string that lets the wallet request a new invoice when needed. That model is useful for donations or recurring contact points, but it does not remove the need to review the amount and merchant details generated for the current transaction.

If a wallet shows a static identifier instead of an invoice, wait for it to fetch the fresh invoice and review the resulting amount before approving. The reusable identifier itself is not proof that the requested amount is correct.
After you pay
Leave the completed-payment screen available until the cashier confirms receipt. Save the wallet transaction record, including its timestamp and payment reference, until the order is handed over. If the café needs to investigate a missing payment, those details are more useful than a photograph of the QR code, which may already be expired or single-use.
For a normal completed sale, there is no additional action in the wallet. The café’s POS should record the settlement, and you can close the app once the order is complete. If the merchant says the payment failed after your wallet says settled, do not send another payment before the first transaction is reconciled.
