How to Pay EMIs After Your Credit Card Is Cancelled (India)

Canceling or blocking the plastic does not automatically cancel the EMI debt. First confirm whether the issuer only blocked the card or formally closed the credit-card account. Then obtain the issuer’s current EMI and total-outstanding figures, ask how it will accept payment without the card, and use only that approved route. If you want to repay early, request a written foreclosure amount and every applicable fee before transferring money.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) distinguishes temporary card blocking from account closure, while the exact payment and foreclosure process depends on your issuer and the EMI terms you accepted. The RBI’s official explanation is in Query 16 of its credit-card FAQ.

What “cancelled” can mean

A card that no longer works is not necessarily an account that no longer exists. Your first task is to identify the account status recorded by the issuer.

Blocked or deactivated card

RBI says blocking or deactivation temporarily stops transactions while the credit or account relationship with the issuer continues. Its FAQ states: “No. De-activation/Blocking of a credit card temporarily curtails the ability of a cardholder to make any transaction in a credit card account while still maintaining the credit/account relationship with the card-issuer.” You may therefore still have an active EMI schedule, interest, fees, and a payment due date even though the card cannot be used.

Formally closed credit-card account

RBI describes closure as termination of the account-based relationship between the cardholder and issuer. Closure is different from merely cancelling the card as a payment instrument. Existing dues still have to be cleared, and the issuer must tell you what those dues are and how to pay them.

Ask the issuer to state the status in writing

Do not infer closure from a declined transaction, a destroyed card, an app message saying “card cancelled,” or the absence of a replacement card. Ask whether the card is:

  • temporarily blocked or deactivated;
  • cancelled as a card but linked to an open account; or
  • part of a credit-card account that has been formally closed.

Keep the issuer’s email, app message, complaint number, or letter. The status determines whether your scheduled EMI continues, whether the issuer is processing closure, and which payment instructions apply.

What to do immediately

  1. Check your latest records. Save the last statement, EMI booking confirmation, payment history, and any cancellation SMS or email. Note the next EMI due date, the total amount due, and the EMI’s remaining tenure. An unusable card is not proof that the balance is zero.
  2. Contact the issuer through an official channel. Use the issuer’s official app, website, or the telephone and postal details printed on your statement. Avoid payment links sent by unverified messages. Tell the issuer that the card is cancelled or blocked and that you need to pay an existing EMI.
  3. Request four specific answers. Ask: “Is my card blocked or is my credit-card account closed? What is the current total amount due? What is the next EMI amount and due date? Which payment methods can I use now?”
  4. Clarify whether the EMI is continuing. Ask whether the existing instalment plan will run to its scheduled end or whether the issuer requires a separate settlement because of the cancellation. The RBI FAQ does not prescribe one post-cancellation payment channel or one EMI treatment for every issuer.
  5. Ask for a foreclosure quote if you want to pay early. Request the outstanding principal, interest or other components, taxes, foreclosure charge, and the quote’s validity date in writing. Do not send a lump sum based on an estimate from an old statement.
  6. Pay only through the route the issuer confirms. Use the account reference and amount supplied by the issuer. Retain the receipt, transaction reference, date, and the communication that authorised the route.
  7. Verify posting and the remaining balance. After the issuer’s stated processing period, ask for confirmation that the payment was credited to the correct card account. Check the next statement or obtain a written zero-balance or revised-EMI confirmation, depending on what you paid.
  8. Obtain closure confirmation when applicable. If you asked for formal account closure, request written confirmation after all dues are settled. Keep the closure reference and the final statement.

How to keep paying a scheduled EMI

If the issuer says the account remains open and the EMI continues, treat the instalment as an ordinary debt with a due date. The cancelled card is only the payment instrument that stopped working; it is not a discharge of the underlying obligation.

Separate the next EMI from the total outstanding

Ask for both figures. The next EMI due is the amount needed for the current billing cycle under the existing schedule. The total outstanding may include future principal, accrued interest, taxes, fees, and other posted transactions. Paying only the next EMI does not ordinarily settle the entire plan; paying the full amount without a foreclosure quote may leave a fee or adjustment.

Use an issuer-approved alternative

There is no single RBI-mandated channel that every issuer must use after a card is cancelled. The issuer may provide an account-specific alternative, but the available route, reference format, cut-off time, and posting process are issuer matters. Ask the issuer to identify:

  • the exact beneficiary or account reference, if one is required;
  • the amount to pay and the date by which it must be received;
  • how the payment will be allocated to the EMI account; and
  • how you will receive a receipt or confirmation.

Do not redirect payment to a new card number unless the issuer expressly tells you to do so. A replacement card, if any, does not by itself prove that an old EMI has been transferred or closed.

Do not wait for a statement if the due date is near

RBI says that when closure is requested while dues remain, the issuer must provide details of those dues without waiting for the next billing cycle and advise payment to complete closure. The same practical approach helps when an account is blocked: contact the issuer immediately rather than allowing a due date to pass while you wait for a new statement.

Choosing between scheduled instalments and early foreclosure

You generally have two practical paths, subject to your issuer’s terms:

Choice What you ask the issuer to confirm Main risk to control
Continue the EMI schedule Next instalment, due date, remaining tenure, and approved payment route Missing a due date because the old card no longer works
Foreclose the EMI early Written settlement amount, remaining principal, taxes, fees, and validity date Paying an estimate that excludes a foreclosure charge or later adjustment

Cancellation does not automatically select either option. The RBI material does not say that a cancelled card wipes out future instalments or automatically forecloses them. Your issuer’s EMI booking terms and the reason for cancellation can affect the result.

Why a written foreclosure quote matters

A foreclosure quote should identify the amount that will fully close the EMI on a specified date. Ask whether it includes all interest, taxes, and charges and whether the amount changes after the quote expires. Obtain confirmation that the payment will be applied to foreclosure rather than treated as an advance payment against future bills.

Federal Bank example: an issuer-specific charge

The Federal Bank credit-card MITC states a foreclosure charge of 3% plus applicable GST on the remaining principal when its credit-card EMI is closed before the tenure ends, subject to that bank’s terms. The document also contains a limited cancellation window for certain EMI bookings. This is Federal Bank’s policy, not an India-wide rate. Other issuers may charge a different amount, impose different conditions, or offer no comparable window. Ask your own issuer for its current written terms before paying early.

Formal account closure and the seven-working-day rule

If you have requested formal closure, RBI says the issuer must honour the closure request within seven working days, subject to payment of dues. Where dues are outstanding, the time you take to clear them is excluded from that period. In other words, the seven-working-day period is not a promise that an unpaid account disappears within seven days.

Ask the issuer to tell you the dues needed to complete closure and how to make that payment. Once those dues are cleared, request written confirmation that the account is closed. RBI also says the issuer should report the closure suitably to credit information companies. Keep the final statement and confirmation so you can challenge an inaccurate status later.

What to say when you contact the issuer

A precise written request reduces back-and-forth. You can adapt this wording:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
My credit card ending in [last four digits] was cancelled or blocked on [date]. Please confirm whether the card is blocked, cancelled while the account remains open, or whether the credit-card account is formally closed. Please provide the current total amount due, the next EMI amount and due date, the remaining tenure, the approved payment method without using the card, and the written foreclosure amount and applicable charges if I choose early repayment. Please also confirm how I will receive payment and closure confirmation.

Keep the date you sent the request and the issuer’s case or complaint number. If the issuer calls instead of replying in writing, send a follow-up message recording what the representative told you and ask the issuer to correct it if inaccurate.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming “cancelled” means “debt cancelled”

A card’s cancellation changes your ability to transact; it does not establish that the EMI balance has been forgiven, settled, or transferred. Confirm the account and EMI status directly.

Paying the old card number without instructions

After cancellation, an old payment path may be rejected or may not be allocated as you expect. Use the issuer-approved route and retain proof of the reference you used.

Paying only the amount on an old statement

Statements can predate a cancellation, a fee, a refund, or an EMI adjustment. Request a current figure and its calculation date before paying.

Foreclosing without checking the fee

An early lump-sum payment can attract a foreclosure charge or tax. Get the written quote first; the Federal Bank 3% plus GST example illustrates why an issuer-specific check is necessary.

Missing the due date while waiting for closure

A closure request does not necessarily suspend the payment obligation. Ask what amount is due now and how to pay it while closure is processed.

Failing to verify the final status

Keep receipts, statements, and written confirmation. If you paid the full quoted amount, verify that the EMI is marked foreclosed and that no residual balance remains. If you continued instalments, verify that the next due date and remaining schedule are correct.

When and how to escalate a complaint

RBI’s stated route is issuer first. Submit a written complaint to the card issuer describing the cancellation, the EMI, the amount you were told to pay, the payment evidence, and the resolution you want. Include copies rather than originals of statements and receipts.

Under RBI’s FAQ, you may approach the RBI Ombudsman when the issuer rejects the complaint, you are dissatisfied with the response, or the issuer has not responded within 30 days of your complaint. The FAQ points to the RBI Complaint Management System (CMS) as a route for lodging the complaint. Read the applicable instructions in Query 17 of the RBI FAQ before filing. An escalation does not guarantee a particular compensation or account outcome; present the record and the remedy you requested.

Practical decision guide

Your situation Next action
The card is blocked, but the account appears active Request the next EMI, total due, and issuer-approved payment route; continue payments unless the issuer confirms another arrangement.
The issuer says the account is formally closed, but a balance remains Request the current dues and instructions needed to clear them; obtain closure confirmation after payment.
You want to finish the EMI immediately Request a dated written foreclosure quote, including principal, taxes, fees, and validity; pay only after checking the total.
The issuer has not resolved your written complaint Wait for the conditions in RBI’s escalation rule: rejection, an unsatisfactory response, or no response for 30 days, then consider the RBI Ombudsman route.

Final checklist

  • Card status confirmed as blocked, cancelled with account open, or formally closed.
  • Current total due and next EMI due date obtained.
  • Issuer-approved payment method and account reference recorded.
  • Scheduled continuation or early foreclosure decision documented.
  • Foreclosure quote and all charges checked before an early lump-sum payment.
  • Receipt and transaction reference saved.
  • Payment posting, remaining balance, and EMI status verified.
  • Written closure confirmation obtained when closure was requested.
  • Issuer complaint number retained if anything remains unresolved.

Issuer channels and EMI terms can change. Recheck the current terms supplied by your issuer on the date you pay, and use the RBI FAQ as the regulatory reference for the distinction between blocking, closure, dues, and complaint escalation.
