Paying a grandchild’s student-loan servicer is generally a gift to the grandchild for U.S. federal gift-tax purposes. The unlimited educational exclusion does not apply to loan repayment; it applies only when you pay qualifying tuition directly to an educational organization. For 2025, gifts above $19,000 to one person generally require the donor to file Form 709, but filing does not by itself mean gift tax is owed. An existing 529 plan (qualified tuition program, or QTP) is a separate route that can repay up to $10,000 of one individual’s student-loan principal or interest over that person’s lifetime.
What happens when you pay the servicer
If you send money to a grandchild’s loan servicer, make a payment through the servicer’s website, or reimburse the grandchild for a payment already made, the federal gift-tax analysis generally treats the transfer as a gift to the grandchild. The fact that the check goes to a lender rather than into the grandchild’s bank account does not turn the transaction into tuition.

That gift is considered together with your other gifts to the same grandchild during the calendar year. A qualifying present-interest gift can be covered by the annual exclusion up to the amount allowed for that year. For 2025, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) states a general $19,000 per-donee threshold for filing when gifts to one person exceed that amount, subject to the exceptions in the Form 709 instructions. The amount is year-specific; the 2026 threshold was not established in the official material used here, so confirm the instructions for the year in which you give.
If the total exceeds the applicable annual exclusion, you generally report the excess on Form 709. A return reports the transfer and can apply the donor’s available lifetime gift-tax and estate-tax exemption. A filing requirement is not the same as a bill: whether tax is ultimately payable depends on the donor’s prior taxable gifts, remaining exemption and other facts.

The three ways grandparents commonly help
| Route | Who receives the payment | What it pays | Primary federal rule | Limit or filing point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pay the loan servicer | The servicer, for the grandchild’s debt | Student-loan principal or interest | Gift to the grandchild; annual exclusion and Form 709 rules apply | For 2025, gifts over $19,000 to one person generally require Form 709, subject to the instructions’ exceptions |
| Pay the school directly | A qualifying educational organization | Tuition only | Educational exclusion from gift treatment | No stated dollar cap, but payment must be made directly to the school and be for tuition |
| Use an existing 529/QTP | The plan’s designated beneficiary (or an eligible sibling under the rule) | Student-loan principal or interest | QTP distribution rules | $10,000 lifetime limit per individual; interest paid from the distribution cannot also be used for the student-loan interest deduction |
These routes are not interchangeable. Paying tuition before a loan is taken can qualify for the educational exclusion; paying the resulting loan later generally cannot. A 529 distribution follows its own statutory limit and does not make a grandparent’s separate cash payment to a servicer tax-free.
Route 1: Pay the student-loan servicer and handle the gift correctly
1. Add every gift to the same grandchild
List the proposed loan payment alongside birthday money, holiday checks, tuition reimbursements, investments transferred to the grandchild and any other transfers to that person during the calendar year. The annual exclusion is measured per donor, per donee, per year, so the loan payment cannot be evaluated in isolation.
2. Identify the gift year
Use the calendar year in which the transfer is made. Keep the payment date and the date the servicer posts it. If a payment straddles December and January, retain confirmations showing which year each amount belongs to.

For 2025, the IRS Form 709 instructions use $19,000 as the general per-donee amount for determining whether a return is required when gifts to one person exceed that figure. The instructions contain exceptions, including transfers that are outside gift-tax treatment and special rules for future interests. Do not carry the 2025 number into 2026 without checking that year’s instructions.
4. File Form 709 when required
If your gifts to the grandchild exceed the applicable annual exclusion, report the gift on Form 709 for that calendar year. The report can use available lifetime exemption; filing alone does not establish that you owe gift tax. If you and a spouse elect gift splitting, each spouse is responsible for a separate return, even when the split gifts fall within the annual exclusion.
5. Preserve a complete file
- Amount of each payment and the date it was sent.
- Grandchild’s name and the loan servicer’s name and account reference.
- Servicer confirmation or bank record showing the payment was received.
- A running schedule of all other gifts to that grandchild in the same year.
- Copies of Form 709, any gift-splitting consent and supporting worksheets.
Good records do not change the tax classification, but they let you and your preparer reconcile annual gifts and demonstrate what was paid, to whom and when.
Route 2: Pay future tuition directly to the school
The federal educational exclusion is the cleanest way to pay qualifying tuition without treating the payment as a gift. The payment must go directly to a qualifying educational organization and must be for tuition. Paying the grandchild first, paying a loan servicer, or paying a parent who then pays the school does not satisfy the direct-payment requirement.

What the exclusion covers
It covers tuition charged by the qualifying organization. It is separate from the annual exclusion, so a properly structured tuition payment does not consume the annual per-donee amount.
What it does not cover
- Student-loan principal or interest after the school has already been paid.
- Books and supplies.
- Room and board.
- Transportation, insurance and other non-tuition charges.
If one payment to the school includes tuition and non-tuition items, only the qualifying tuition portion can use the educational exclusion. The remainder is generally a gift to the student and must be considered with your other gifts for the year. Ask the school for an itemized invoice and pay the tuition line directly rather than sending a lump sum to the student.
Timing matters
This route helps with future or current tuition bills. It does not retroactively convert an existing loan balance into tuition. If the family has already borrowed to pay the bill, a later payment to the lender remains a loan repayment for gift-tax purposes.
Route 3: Use an existing 529 plan (QTP)
Federal guidance permits a qualified tuition program distribution for the designated beneficiary’s or the beneficiary’s sibling’s student-loan principal or interest. The lifetime limit is $10,000 per individual. The limit follows the individual whose loan is being repaid, not a new $10,000 allowance every year.

Confirm the account and beneficiary
Before requesting a distribution, verify with the plan administrator that the account is a QTP, that the grandchild is the designated beneficiary (or qualifies under the sibling rule), and that the administrator’s process supports student-loan repayment. Keep the plan statement, distribution request and servicer confirmation together.
Track the lifetime cap
Record every QTP distribution used for student-loan repayment, including amounts taken in prior years or from other accounts for the same individual if the family has those records. Stop when the individual’s aggregate qualifying distributions reach $10,000. The federal rule does not create an unlimited way to drain a 529 into loan payments.
Avoid double use of student-loan interest
Interest paid from a QTP distribution cannot also be used for the student-loan interest deduction. Coordinate the distribution with the borrower’s income-tax records so the same dollars are not claimed for both purposes.

Keep the QTP route separate from cash gifts
A QTP distribution is governed by QTP rules. It does not provide a blanket exemption for a grandparent’s separate check to the servicer. If you withdraw cash from your own account and send it to the lender, analyze that cash transfer under the gift rules even if a 529 account also helped the grandchild.
When Form 709 is required for a loan payment
The 2025 threshold
For gifts made in 2025, the IRS instructions generally call for Form 709 when gifts to one person exceed $19,000, subject to the instructions’ exceptions. This is a filing threshold, not a tax rate and not an automatic tax bill. A donor who exceeds the annual exclusion may report the taxable portion and apply available lifetime exemption.
Separate returns and gift splitting
Each spouse has a separate Form 709 responsibility. If spouses elect to split gifts, the election requires returns even when the split gifts are within the annual exclusion. Do not assume that one spouse’s filing covers the other spouse or that a joint income-tax return substitutes for a gift-tax return.
Due date and extensions for 2025 gifts
The 2025 gift-tax return is generally due April 15, 2026. An income-tax extension generally carries over to the gift-tax return, and Form 8892 is another route for requesting a filing extension. Neither type of filing extension extends the time to pay gift or generation-skipping transfer tax that is actually due. Check the instructions for the relevant year before filing because dates and procedures can change.
Information to give your preparer
- A calendar-year total of gifts to the grandchild, including the loan payment.
- Payment confirmations and the servicer’s identity.
- Whether a spouse made gifts to the same grandchild or a gift-splitting election is planned.
- Records of prior taxable gifts that could affect available lifetime exemption.
- Any trust, custodial-account or entity involvement.
Generation-skipping transfer (GST) questions
A grandchild is generally a skip person for many GST-tax purposes, so a large or repeated transfer can raise a GST question in addition to gift tax. That does not mean every payment to a grandchild triggers GST tax. Applicability depends on the type of transfer, exclusions, available GST exemption and the donor’s prior transfers.
Recommended Free Tools
The IRS instructions include a special generation-assignment rule when the grandchild’s parent who is the donor’s child is deceased at the relevant time. Family circumstances can therefore change the analysis. Trusts, direct skips, gifts split between spouses and substantial cumulative transfers deserve individual advice from a professional who handles both gift and GST matters.
Worked examples
Example 1: A payment below the 2025 annual amount
A grandparent pays $12,000 directly to a grandchild’s loan servicer in 2025 and makes no other gifts to that grandchild. Assuming the transfer is a qualifying present-interest gift and no exception applies, the amount is within the $19,000 2025 per-donee amount. The grandparent should still retain the servicer confirmation and a record of other gifts.

Example 2: Other gifts push the total over the threshold
The same grandparent pays $18,000 to the servicer and gives the grandchild $4,000 in cash during 2025. Total gifts are $22,000. The amount above the applicable annual exclusion is generally reported on Form 709. Reporting does not by itself mean a check is due; available lifetime exemption may cover the reported amount.
Example 3: Tuition and loan repayment in the same year
A grandparent pays the university $20,000 directly for tuition and later pays $8,000 to the grandchild’s loan servicer. The direct tuition payment can qualify for the educational exclusion if it is paid to a qualifying organization for tuition. The $8,000 loan payment is analyzed separately as a gift to the grandchild and is added to other gifts to that person.

The QTP distribution uses part of the beneficiary’s $10,000 lifetime student-loan limit. The personal check remains a separate gift analysis; the 529 rule does not shelter it. Any interest paid from the QTP distribution cannot also support the student-loan interest deduction.
Example 5: A payment covering non-tuition charges
A grandparent pays a college’s $15,000 invoice, consisting of $10,000 tuition and $5,000 room and board. Only the $10,000 tuition portion can use the direct educational exclusion. The $5,000 non-tuition portion is generally a gift to the student and must be combined with other gifts for the year.

Calling a servicer payment “tuition”
Loan repayment occurs after the school has been paid. Labeling the check “tuition” does not change the recipient or the substance of the transfer. Use the gift rules for the servicer payment.
Forgetting other gifts
Annual exclusion calculations include all gifts to the same donee in the calendar year. Maintain one running schedule instead of checking each payment in isolation.

Using the wrong year’s threshold
The $19,000 figure cited here applies to 2025 gifts. Confirm the applicable IRS instructions for 2026 or any later year before planning a payment or quoting a threshold.
Paying the school for the wrong charges
Request an itemized bill. Direct payment of room, board, books or supplies does not receive the tuition-only exclusion, even when the check is sent to the school.
Overlooking gift splitting
If spouses want to split a gift, plan for the required separate returns and retain the consent and supporting records. A joint income-tax return does not replace Form 709.

Ignoring GST or trust complications
Large, repeated or trust-related transfers to a grandchild can involve GST rules that are not resolved by the annual exclusion alone. Obtain advice before sending a substantial payment when those facts are present.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the purpose. Is the money paying current tuition, repaying an existing loan, or coming from a 529/QTP?
- Identify the recipient. Use the school’s qualifying organization, the loan servicer, or the QTP distribution process as applicable.
- Separate the dollars. Keep tuition, non-tuition charges, QTP distributions and personal cash payments in distinct records.
- Total the annual gifts. Add every transfer to the same grandchild made by the same donor during the calendar year.
- Check the year’s IRS instructions. For 2025, the general per-donee filing threshold cited by the IRS is $19,000; do not assume that amount applies to another year.
- Decide whether Form 709 is required. Include gift-splitting analysis and the instructions’ exceptions.
- Track QTP usage. Record the individual’s lifetime student-loan distributions against the $10,000 limit and coordinate interest deductions.
- Escalate complex cases. Seek gift-tax and GST advice for large or repeated gifts, trusts, prior taxable transfers, or uncertainty about generation assignment.
Federal scope and state-law caution
This framework describes U.S. federal rules. States can apply different rules to gifts, estate taxes and 529 plans, and a state’s treatment may not match the federal result. Confirm the law for the donor’s and student’s jurisdictions, the calendar year of the payment and the specific plan terms before acting.
Bottom line for a grandparent’s payment
To help with an existing loan, you can pay the servicer, but treat the amount as a gift to the grandchild and evaluate it with the year’s annual exclusion and Form 709 rules. To use the educational exclusion, pay a qualifying school directly for tuition—not a lender and not non-tuition expenses. If an existing 529/QTP is available, it may repay up to $10,000 lifetime of the individual’s student-loan principal or interest, with the separate restriction on claiming a deduction for interest paid from that distribution.
