Use pause when you need a temporary break; use cancellation when you want the recurring instruction to end. A pause may resume instalments automatically after a facility-defined period. Cancellation ends the registered SIP instruction, and restarting later may require a new registration and payment mandate. The exact notice period, pause length, processing time and submission route depend on the mutual fund scheme and the platform where you registered the SIP.
Before acting, identify the SIP’s AMC or transaction platform, check the next debit date, and read the current SIP service terms. Do not assume that a pause period, deadline or restart process used by one scheme applies to another.

Pause, stop or restart: choose the right request
A mutual fund SIP is a recurring instruction to invest a specified amount at a chosen frequency. The service request changes future instalments; it is not the same as redeeming units already bought.
Pause the SIP for a temporary cash-flow problem
A pause suspends instalments for a defined period while leaving the existing SIP instruction in place. The scheme document may specify when deductions resume, how long the pause can last, how far in advance you must apply and whether the facility can be used repeatedly.

One SEBI-hosted Unifi scheme document describes the facility this way: “SIP Pause facility allows investors to pause their existing SIP for a temporary period, without discontinuing the existing SIP.” That is the wording of that scheme document, not a universal regulatory definition.
Cancel the SIP when recurring debits should end
Cancellation addresses the ongoing registered mandate and future instalments. It is the appropriate request if you do not want the SIP to resume automatically or you no longer want that recurring investment instruction.
Restart only after confirming the provider’s process
A paused SIP may restart under the facility’s terms. A cancelled SIP may require a fresh SIP registration and payment mandate. The evidence available for this guide does not establish a universal one-click reactivation process, so obtain confirmation from the AMC or platform before assuming a cancelled instruction can simply be switched back on.

Before you submit any request
Gather the information that lets the service team identify the correct instruction:
- AMC and scheme name, folio or account reference, and the SIP amount and frequency.
- The bank account or payment mandate used for the SIP.
- The platform used to register it, such as the AMC’s own service channel or an exchange facility.
- The date of the next scheduled debit.
- Whether you need a temporary break, a permanent stop or a later restart.
Read the current scheme information document or SIP terms for four items: eligible frequency, maximum pause period, advance-notice deadline and the route for submitting the request. Save a copy or screenshot of the terms and of your completed request.
How to pause a mutual fund SIP
- Open the correct service channel. Sign in to the AMC or transaction platform that holds the SIP registration and locate its SIP service-request area. If the SIP was registered through an exchange facility, use the route specified for that registration rather than assuming the AMC portal can alter it.
- Select the pause facility, not cancellation. Check that the request identifies the correct scheme, folio, amount and frequency. A cancellation option is not a temporary pause.
- Choose an eligible pause period. Enter only a duration permitted by the scheme. Some terms use a number of instalments; others use calendar months. Check whether the first instalment skipped and the restart instalment are shown clearly.
- Submit before the stated deadline. The deadline is measured against the next instalment in the scheme’s terms. If the next debit is close, contact the provider immediately and ask whether the request can take effect in time. There is no safe universal cutoff.
- Record the acknowledgement. Keep the request number, submission timestamp and any confirmation message. A screen showing “submitted” is not the same as confirmation that the debit has been stopped.
- Verify the restart details. Confirm the date on which instalments resume, the amount, frequency and bank mandate. If the provider does not show a restart date, ask for it in writing.
What a pause does not do
A pause concerns future SIP purchases. It does not, by itself, redeem or sell units already held in the fund. Your existing units remain subject to the fund’s normal value changes, charges and redemption rules.

How to stop SIP deductions permanently
- Use the provider’s SIP cancellation service request. Start with the AMC or platform where the SIP was registered. If another service provider submitted the original instruction, use that provider’s cancellation route or ask it to identify the correct route.
- Specify the exact SIP. Include the folio or registration reference, scheme, amount, frequency and bank account details requested by the provider. If you have several SIPs, check each one separately.
- Submit the request and note its effective date. Ask whether the request stops only future instalments or whether any already-presented debit will still be processed.
- Obtain confirmation that the mandate and future instalments are cancelled. A provider’s acknowledgement should identify the instruction affected. Keep it with your records.
- Check the next expected debit. Review the provider’s status and your bank account around the next scheduled date. If a debit appears after the stated effective date, contact the provider promptly with the acknowledgement.
A SEBI-hosted Unifi scheme document says the AMC will endeavour to cancel the registered SIP mandate within two business days after receiving a cancellation request. That is a document-specific operational statement, not a guarantee for every AMC, scheme or platform.

If the next instalment is due soon
Do not wait for an informal assumption that a request will be processed before the debit. Submit the request through the documented channel and contact the provider to ask whether the timing permits the change. Ask three specific questions:
- Has the request been accepted, or is it still pending review?
- What is the effective date relative to the next debit presentation?
- If the debit has already been presented, what action is still possible?
Keep the response, including the date, channel and reference number. Because cutoff times differ, no general statement such as “submit one day before” is reliable.
Will a paused SIP restart automatically?
Often the purpose of a pause facility is to resume the existing SIP after the selected period, but the restart rule belongs to the particular scheme. Confirm:

- The exact pause end date or number of skipped instalments.
- Whether the next instalment is the normal amount or follows a revised schedule.
- Whether the pause can be extended or used again.
- What happens if a bank mandate expires or a debit fails during the pause.
Do not treat a pause as indefinite. If you want the deductions to remain stopped beyond the allowed period, submit a cancellation request in accordance with the provider’s terms.

How to restart after cancelling an SIP
First ask the AMC or platform whether the cancelled registration can be reactivated. The available scheme documents do not establish one universal process. A provider may require a new SIP instruction, a fresh payment mandate, or both.
- Check the old registration status. Confirm that it is actually cancelled rather than paused, pending or terminated after failed debits.
- Ask whether the old mandate is reusable. Get a clear answer about the bank mandate and any new verification required.
- Request the current SIP setup instructions. Confirm minimum amount, frequency options, first instalment date, notice period and authentication steps under the current terms.
- Submit a new registration if required. Review scheme, amount, frequency and bank details before authorising it.
- Verify the first debit. Save the new registration acknowledgement and check that the first instalment is scheduled for the date you selected.
Do not place a second SIP order merely because the cancelled one is no longer visible. First establish whether the old instruction is closed; otherwise you could create an unintended duplicate.

Pause facilities are contractual features of a scheme or transaction platform, so their conditions are not identical. The following examples illustrate the range; they are not current instructions for every investor and should not replace the terms for your own SIP.

All three examples show why a generic “pause for three months” or “cancel within two days” answer can mislead an investor whose scheme has different terms.

Do not use failed debits as a substitute for cancellation
One Bandhan document passage states that three continuous failures may cause auto-termination, subject to that document’s wording. An investor should not intentionally let payments fail to stop a SIP. Failed debits can leave the instruction in an uncertain status and may trigger consequences under the applicable mandate or bank terms. Submit a formal cancellation request and verify the result instead.
Troubleshooting common situations
The pause option is missing
Check whether the SIP frequency is eligible, whether the next instalment is too close for the stated deadline, and whether the SIP was registered on another platform. Ask the AMC or platform to identify the applicable route rather than submitting a cancellation by mistake.
The request says “pending” near the debit date
Contact the provider with the request number and ask for the effective date and whether the debit has already been presented. Do not assume that submission alone prevents the next debit.
The SIP resumed earlier or later than expected
Compare the confirmation with the scheme’s definition of the pause period: it may be based on calendar months or skipped instalments. Ask the provider to explain the calculation and correct the instruction if it does not match the accepted request.
A cancelled SIP still appears in the account
Check whether the display is a historical record, a pending cancellation or an active instruction. Request written confirmation of the mandate status and future instalments. If a debit is scheduled after the confirmed effective date, escalate promptly with the acknowledgement.
You want to invest again but cannot find a restart button
That may be normal after cancellation. Ask whether a new SIP registration and mandate are required and follow the current onboarding steps instead of creating an unverified duplicate.
Records to keep
Retain the scheme terms that applied when you submitted the request, the completed form or online confirmation, request number, acknowledgement date, effective date, provider correspondence and the first post-change account statement. These records help distinguish a missed instalment caused by an approved pause from one caused by a failed debit or an unprocessed cancellation.
