To open a Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme (SCSS) account, submit Form-1 at a post-office or other authorised accounts office, complete the institution’s current KYC and age checks, and deposit the amount you want to invest. If you qualify through a retirement route before age 60, include evidence of retirement and retirement-benefit payment. When the account is opened, give clear instructions for quarterly interest—such as credit to an eligible savings account or, where the post office supports it, payment by money order.
India Post’s 2026 listing shows an SCSS rate of 8.2% per annum. Small-savings rates can be revised by quarter, so verify the rate and the applicable government notice on the day you apply. Interest periods end on 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December; India Post operating guidance says payment is made on the first working day of April, July, October and January respectively.

What you are opening
SCSS is a Government of India small-savings account designed for eligible senior citizens. You make a deposit subject to the scheme’s aggregate ceiling, and the account pays interest every quarter rather than waiting until maturity. The account can be opened alone or jointly with a spouse. You may hold more than one SCSS account, but the total balance in all of your SCSS accounts must stay within the ceiling prescribed by the scheme.
The account-opening rules come from the Department of Economic Affairs’ Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme rules. The service experience—forms, accepted documents, payment channels and processing—can differ between a post office and an authorised bank, so the institution’s current checklist matters as much as the scheme rules.

Check eligibility before you collect documents
Applicants aged 60 or over
A person who is at least 60 years old may generally open an SCSS account. Proof of age is required, and the accounts office will apply its current KYC standards before accepting the deposit.
Retirees aged 55 to under 60
Someone below 60 can qualify after retirement only when the relevant conditions are met. The route is tied to retirement, receipt of retirement benefits and opening the account within the period allowed by the scheme. Bring the employer or retirement certificate that applies to your case and proof that the retirement benefit was disbursed. The exact evidence requested can vary with the retirement route, so ask the accounts office for its current list before visiting.
Retired defence personnel aged 50 or over
Retired defence personnel may be eligible from age 50, subject to the scheme’s conditions. This provision excludes civilian defence employees. A defence retiree should carry service or retirement records that establish the qualifying status and the timing of retirement-benefit payment.

Joint accounts with a spouse
An SCSS joint account may be opened with a spouse. Eligibility is determined by the first account holder; the second applicant does not have to meet the age threshold. Both applicants should still be ready to complete the institution’s identity and KYC checks.
More than one account
The rules allow multiple SCSS accounts, but the combined deposits across them are subject to one aggregate ceiling. Before opening another account, add the balances of your existing SCSS accounts and confirm the current ceiling with the accounts office. Do not assume that a second account creates a separate limit.

Choose where to apply
You can apply through a post office or an authorised bank that offers SCSS. The scheme terms are set by the Government of India, while day-to-day service details are institution-specific.
| Decision point | Post office | Authorised bank |
|---|---|---|
| Where you submit Form-1 | At a post-office accounts office that accepts SCSS applications. | At a participating branch or channel designated by the bank. |
| Document checklist | India Post publishes customer guidance, but the office may ask for current KYC and case-specific evidence. | The bank’s checklist can differ operationally; obtain it from the branch before applying. |
| Interest collection | Operational material describes credit to a post-office savings account and money-order payment on request, with commission deducted from a money order. | Ask the bank which savings-account credit arrangement it supports and what account details it requires. |
| Practical choice | Useful if a nearby post office can process the account and you want its documented payment options. | Useful if an authorised branch is more convenient or you already use its savings-account services. |
Call the chosen office before travelling. Confirm that it is accepting new SCSS accounts, ask for the latest Form-1 and checklist, and find out whether interest can be credited to the savings account you intend to nominate.

No single checklist should be treated as universal. India Post’s customer guide identifies the main categories, but a bank may use different forms or request additional evidence. Confirm the current list with the selected accounts office.
For every applicant
- Form-1: the prescribed SCSS application form, completed as instructed by the accounts office.
- Identity and KYC evidence: carry the identity documents and address information accepted by the institution, together with originals if the office requires verification.
- Proof of age: the document used to establish that you are 60 or over, or that you meet the applicable lower-age retirement category.
- Deposit details: the amount and payment method you will use, within the aggregate SCSS ceiling.
- Interest-payment instructions: the savings-account details needed for credit, if you choose account credit.
For an applicant below 60 using a retirement route
- Retirement or employer certificate showing the qualifying retirement event.
- Evidence that the relevant retirement benefits were paid or disbursed.
- Any additional declaration or timing evidence requested by the accounts office to show that the account is being opened within the permitted period.
Do not rely on a document list copied from an old article. Scheme eligibility may be stable while an institution’s KYC process, form edition or accepted proof changes.
For a joint account
Take the spouse’s identity and KYC documents as well as the first holder’s documents. Tell the office at the outset that the account is joint so it can provide the correct form fields and signature instructions.

How to open the account: step by step
- Confirm your category. Check your age and, if you are below 60, establish which retirement provision makes you eligible. If you are a retired defence person, verify that you are not applying as a civilian defence employee and that the other scheme conditions are met.
- Count existing SCSS deposits. Add every SCSS balance you already hold, including accounts at other institutions. The new deposit must keep the combined amount within the scheme ceiling.
- Select an accounts office. Choose a post office or authorised bank branch, then ask for its current Form-1, KYC checklist, accepted deposit methods and interest-credit requirements.
- Decide on individual or joint holding. A joint account must be with a spouse, and the first holder is the person whose eligibility governs the account.
- Complete Form-1 carefully. Enter names exactly as they appear on the identity documents. Check date of birth, address, contact details, holding type and the instructions for receiving interest before signing.
- Submit documents for verification. Present the required identity, age and—where relevant—retirement evidence. Ask the official to tell you immediately if a copy, signature or certificate is missing rather than leaving the application unresolved.
- Make the deposit. Pay the chosen amount using the methods accepted by that accounts office. Request a receipt or account-opening confirmation showing the deposit date, because the first interest period is measured from that date.
- Give interest-payment instructions. If you want credit, provide the eligible savings-account details in the format the institution requires. If you prefer post-office money-order payment and that service is available, ask for it when opening; the documented money-order option deducts a commission.
- Check the completed record. Before leaving, verify the account number, first-holder name, joint-holder name where applicable, deposit amount, opening date and the selected interest-payment method. Keep the receipt, Form-1 acknowledgement and any retirement evidence with your financial records.
Rate, deposit ceiling and what can change
The rate currently shown by India Post
India Post’s savings page lists 8.2% per annum in its 2026 material. That is the official listing captured for this article, not a promise that the rate will remain unchanged for the entire life of an account. The Department of Economic Affairs publishes small-savings rate revisions by quarter; a notice dated 30 September 2026 is among the current revision notices. Check the applicable notice for the quarter in which you open the account and do not rely on an undated bank table or an old statement that says the rate has applied since an earlier year.

SCSS permits multiple accounts but applies one combined deposit ceiling to the depositor. The numeric ceiling is not printed in the institution-specific checklist you may receive, and operational staff should confirm the amount in force when you apply. Treat the ceiling as an account-level rule across all your SCSS holdings, not as a limit available afresh at every branch.
Do not confuse rate and payment frequency
The quoted percentage is annual. Payment is quarterly, so the annual rate is divided across the scheme’s interest periods according to the account’s deposit and the applicable rules. A quarterly payment is not a separate annual return, and the first payment can cover less than a full quarter.
When SCSS interest is paid
The scheme uses four interest periods ending on fixed calendar dates. India Post’s operational guidance identifies the first working day of the following month as the payment day.
| Interest period ends | Usual payment timing described by India Post | What the payment represents |
|---|---|---|
| 31 March | First working day of April | Interest accrued through 31 March. |
| 30 June | First working day of July | Interest accrued through 30 June. |
| 30 September | First working day of October | Interest accrued through 30 September. |
| 31 December | First working day of January | Interest accrued through 31 December. |
If you deposit during a quarter, the first period starts on the deposit date and ends at the next quarter date. For example, an account opened on 10 August does not receive a full June-to-September period; its first calculation runs from 10 August through 30 September. Later periods follow the regular quarter-end schedule.

For an illustrative calculation only, a ₹100,000 balance at an annual rate of 8.2% would correspond to ₹8,200 over a full year before any applicable deductions or adjustments, or roughly ₹2,050 for a simple three-month illustration. The actual credited amount depends on the scheme’s calculation rules, the exact deposit date, the balance and the rate applicable to that period; use the institution’s figure as the record for your account.

Ask for account credit when opening
Tell the post office or bank that you want quarterly interest credited rather than collected manually. Provide the savings-account information requested by that institution and ask whether the destination account must be held with the same institution. India Post’s operational material describes credit to a post-office savings account subject to its CBS procedures; a bank’s process can differ.
Verify the details before the first due date
- Check that the savings-account number and account-holder name were recorded correctly.
- Ask whether the payment instruction has been accepted or is still awaiting verification.
- Note the first quarter end that applies to your deposit and the expected first-working-day payment date.
- Keep the account-opening receipt so the office can trace the deposit if a credit is late or misdirected.
Money order at a post office
India Post documentation also describes payment by money order on request. A commission is deducted from the money-order payment. Ask the post office whether this option is available for your account and how to submit the request; do not assume that a bank branch offers the same service.
What to do if a quarterly payment is missing
- Check the calendar. The due date is tied to the first working day after the quarter ends, not necessarily the last day of the quarter.
- Check the first-period length. A newly opened account may have its first payment calculated from the deposit date to the next quarter end, so it may be smaller than later payments.
- Review the payment route. Confirm whether you selected savings-account credit or money order and whether the institution accepted all required account details.
- Contact the accounts office. Take the account number, deposit receipt and identification. Ask the official to check the payment instruction and the transaction record.
- Correct an instruction problem promptly. If the destination account details are wrong or incomplete, ask the office what correction form or verification it requires and obtain written confirmation of the updated instruction.
The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme rules state: “If the interest payable every quarter is not claimed by a depositor, such interest will not earn additional interest.” In other words, leaving a quarterly amount unclaimed does not make that amount generate extra SCSS interest. Arrange a reliable payment method and follow up on a missed credit instead of allowing payments to accumulate unattended.

Applying under age 60 without proving the qualifying route
Age alone does not establish eligibility for a person aged 55 to under 60. Bring the retirement and benefit-disbursal evidence and apply within the prescribed period.

Using an outdated checklist
Forms and KYC requirements can change. Confirm the current list with the actual post office or bank branch, especially when your application depends on a specialised retirement category.
Assuming every branch handles payments identically
Post-office CBS procedures, bank branch workflows and money-order availability are operational matters. Ask the chosen institution which credit or collection method it supports before you submit Form-1.
Expecting a full quarter for a mid-quarter deposit
The first period ends at the next 31 March, 30 June, 30 September or 31 December. It begins on the deposit date, so the first payment may cover only part of a quarter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIgnoring other SCSS accounts
Opening a new account without counting existing balances can breach the aggregate ceiling. Prepare a list of all your SCSS account numbers and balances before deciding the new deposit.
Calling 8.2% a permanent rate
The 8.2% figure is India Post’s 2026 listing. Small-savings rates are reviewed by quarter. Record the rate and quarter applicable when you open the account, then check later government notices rather than assuming the same percentage will continue.
Keep a simple account record
Maintain one folder or digital record containing the signed Form-1 acknowledgement, deposit receipt, account-opening date, first-holder and joint-holder details, chosen interest-payment route, savings-account information used for credit and each quarterly transaction entry. Record the rate and the quarter alongside the account statement or receipt. This makes it easier to distinguish a genuinely late payment from a smaller first-period payment and gives the accounts office the information it needs to investigate.
Review the account whenever a new quarter begins: confirm that the rate notice has not changed the applicable percentage, check whether the expected credit arrived on the first working day, and keep the combined balance of all your SCSS accounts within the scheme ceiling. Tax treatment is not addressed here; obtain current, situation-specific guidance before making tax decisions about the interest.
