To buy a listed share in India, you normally need three linked accounts: a demat account to hold securities electronically, a trading account with a SEBI-registered broker to place exchange orders, and a bank account to move money for those trades. Open them only after verifying the intermediary’s registration, reading the complete fee schedule and account terms, and checking that your contact and bank details are correct.
Your first purchase should be treated as a controlled process, not a shortcut to guaranteed returns. Shares can lose value, companies can fail, dividends are not assured, and no broker or tip can remove market risk. The steps below show how to open the accounts, submit an order through the official broker channel, and verify what happened afterward.

Understand the three accounts before you apply
Each account has a separate job. Confusing them can lead to sending money to the wrong place, misunderstanding a fee, or assuming that a security has been purchased when an order was only placed.

| Demat account | Holds shares and other securities in electronic form. | A depository participant (DP) connected to a recognized depository. | A demat or client account number and periodic holdings statements. |
| Trading account | Sends buy and sell instructions to a stock exchange through the intermediary. | A SEBI-registered stock broker or broking firm. | A unique client ID or Unique Client Code (UCC), order history, funds ledger and contract notes. |
| Bank account | Supplies money for purchases and receives sale proceeds and other trade-related payments. | Your bank, linked through the broker’s approved process. | Bank debits and credits that match the transactions you authorized. |
India’s two depositories are NSDL and CDSL. A broker may offer a demat account through a DP connected to either one. The depository is not the same thing as the broker: the broker routes orders, while the depository infrastructure records ownership.

NSE’s investor guidance lists PAN, a bank account, a demat account and a SEBI-registered broker as the usual starting requirements. After onboarding, the broker allocates a client identifier. SEBI’s September 2024 FAQ makes the same distinction among demat, trading and bank accounts and describes the broker’s KYC and UCC process.
Verify the intermediary before sharing documents or money
Do not begin with an advertisement, a social-media tip or a message that asks you to install software. Begin with an official registration check.
Check broker and exchange membership
- Find the intermediary’s legal name, not only its app or trading name.
- Use SEBI’s current intermediary-registration records to confirm that it is registered as a stock broker.
- Check the exchange membership shown in the broker’s official disclosures. A broker should identify the exchanges on which it can execute orders.
- If the demat account is supplied by a separate DP, verify that DP through the relevant depository’s official records.
- Make sure the phone number, email domain and payment instructions in the application match the verified provider’s official channels.
NSE’s “Opening an account” guidance tells first-time investors to find a registered member, check exchange membership, complete KYC and the broker-client agreement, and ask for copies of the forms. Registration can change, so repeat the check immediately before applying rather than relying on an old screenshot or a recommendation.
Compare service and support, not just an advertised rate
Make a side-by-side note for the providers you are considering. Compare the services you actually need, onboarding method, customer-support channels, account statements, complaint process, and the full schedule of brokerage and other charges. A low headline brokerage figure does not by itself show the total cost of a transaction.
Prepare the information and documents
NSE account-opening material identifies a photograph, PAN, identity proof and address proof among the usual documents. Requirements can differ by investor type, residency, account structure and current rules, so use the chosen broker or DP’s live official checklist as the final authority.
Practical pre-application checklist
- Permanent Account Number (PAN) details exactly as recorded by the tax authority.
- A bank account in your name, with account and IFSC information entered exactly as shown by the bank.
- Current identity and address proof accepted by the provider.
- A recent photograph or camera access if the process is digital.
- Your own mobile number and email address, both able to receive one-time passwords and alerts.
- Details of any nominee or other account holder, if the provider asks for them.
- A device and connection suitable for electronic signing or video in-person verification (IPV), where offered.
Do not upload an altered document or use another person’s phone number. If a name or address differs across records, ask the provider how to correct it before submitting the application; mismatches can delay KYC or cause a payment to be rejected.

Open the demat and trading accounts step by step
1. Start from the provider’s official application
Use the provider’s authenticated website or official application. Type the address yourself or use a trusted bookmark rather than a link in an unsolicited message. Confirm that the legal entity named in the application is the same entity you verified in the registration records.

2. Enter KYC information and upload documents
Complete the current KYC fields, upload only the requested documents and review every character before proceeding. The broker may use electronic KYC services and may ask for a photograph, PAN, identity proof and address proof. Keep the submission reference number and a copy of what you sent.
3. Complete video or in-person verification
SEBI’s Investor Charter describes digital account opening that can include entering information, submitting documents and completing video IPV without visiting a DP office. Availability and the exact sequence depend on the provider. During a video check, follow only the instructions displayed in the authenticated application; never read an OTP or trading password aloud to an unsolicited caller.
4. Read the agreement, authorizations and service choices
Before accepting, open each document and check the broker-client agreement, terms of service, risk disclosures, privacy permissions, power-of-attorney or electronic-debit authorizations, and the services you selected. SEBI says investors have a right to account-opening documents and information about fees and charges. You do not have to accept an optional service merely because it appears in the onboarding flow.
5. Examine every charge before you consent
Look for brokerage, account-maintenance charges, transaction or depository-participant charges, taxes and any fees for statements, pledges, transfers or optional products. The amount and frequency can vary by provider and plan. Save the complete tariff or fee schedule with the date you accepted it.

Understand the cost before funding the account
Charges are not limited to the number displayed beside “brokerage.” The applicable amount depends on the provider, service, transaction and prevailing taxes or statutory levies. SEBI advises investors to note applicable fees, keep records and not pay more than the agreed charges.
| Cost category | Question to ask before accepting | Where to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Account opening | Is there a one-time opening fee, and is it refundable? | Account-opening form and tariff sheet. |
| Annual or periodic maintenance | When is it charged, and does it apply to the demat account, trading account or both? | DP and broker fee schedules. |
| Brokerage | Is the charge percentage-based, per order, or subject to a minimum? | Brokerage plan and order confirmation. |
| Depository and transaction charges | Are there charges for selling, transfers, pledges or other demat actions? | DP tariff and contract-note disclosures. |
| Taxes and statutory levies | Which taxes, exchange charges or levies will be added to the trade? | Contract note and current statutory schedule. |
| Optional services | Have you selected research, alerts, managed services or other paid features? | Service-selection screen and agreement. |
A fee table is useful only if you keep the version that applied when you agreed. If a debit does not match the agreed schedule, ask the broker for an itemized explanation and retain the response.

Decide what you can afford to risk before placing an order
A share represents an ownership interest in a company, but its market price can rise or fall. NSE warns that returns are not guaranteed and that a company can fail, leaving its shares potentially worthless. SEBI also notes that dividend payments are not guaranteed.
- Use money you can leave invested and potentially lose; do not use rent, emergency cash or money needed for near-term obligations.
- Do not borrow to invest. SEBI specifically advises against taking loans for investments.
- Do not treat a hot tip, chat message or promised fixed return as analysis. SEBI warns against tips and unregistered intermediaries.
- Set a personal limit for the first transaction before opening the order screen. The limit is a risk-control decision, not a claim about what any share will earn.
- Read the company’s public disclosures and understand what business you would own. The official beginner material does not establish one universally suitable stock-selection formula or first-purchase size.
There is also no universally “best” order type for every beginner. Learn the labels and consequences shown by your broker, and make sure the instruction you send matches your own decision.
Place your first buy order through the registered broker
The exact screen names differ, but the sequence is broadly the same. Use only the authenticated trading account and the payment route specified by the intermediary.

- Sign in directly. Open the verified broker website or application, check the secure connection and sign in with your own credentials. Never use a remote-access session offered by a stranger.
- Confirm available funds. Check the funds ledger and, if money is needed, transfer it through the bank route displayed inside the broker account. Do not send money to a personal account, a new QR code in a chat, or an account name that you cannot verify.
- Find the listed security carefully. Search the exact company name and exchange symbol shown in the broker’s instrument list. Check that you have selected the intended listed security, not a similarly named instrument.
- Choose Buy and review the order fields. The screen normally asks for the exchange, quantity, price instruction and validity or product choice. Read the broker’s explanation of each field; do not assume that a market, limit or other instruction will behave the same in every situation.
- Enter only the quantity and price you intend. Recheck the number of shares and any displayed estimated value, charges or required funds. A misplaced zero can multiply the order.
- Review the confirmation page. Verify the security, side (buy), exchange, quantity, price instruction, validity and estimated total. If anything differs from your plan, cancel the screen and correct it before authorizing.
- Authorize with your own security factor. Enter the trading PIN, OTP or other confirmation only in the official application. Keep the confirmation private.
- Record the order number and status. A submitted order is not necessarily an executed trade. Note whether it is open, partially executed, rejected, cancelled or complete, and read the stated reason for any rejection.
Never place an order by handing your login to another person. If you need help understanding a field, use the broker’s documented support channel and make the final authorization yourself.
Verify execution and the movement of shares and money
Check the order against your instruction
After submission, compare the order status and executed quantity with what you authorized. A partially executed order, rejection or cancellation can produce a result different from the amount you expected. Do not submit a duplicate order until you understand the first order’s status.
Obtain the contract note or confirmation
SEBI advises investors to insist on a valid contract note or confirmation memo within 24 hours. The note should identify the trade and charges. Compare its security, quantity, price, date, order reference and total debits with your instruction and the broker’s order history.
Reconcile all three records
- Trading record: order and execution status, funds ledger and contract note.
- Demat record: the holding statement or transaction entry showing the securities credited, subject to the applicable market-settlement process.
- Bank record: the debit for a purchase or the credit for a sale and any separate charge.
Credit timing and statement labels can vary with the exchange process and provider. If the contract note, demat entry and bank movement do not agree, contact the broker and DP promptly, attach the records and ask for a written explanation.
Protect the account from common frauds
Keep credentials private
NSE explicitly warns investors not to share login IDs, passwords, OTPs or TPINs. That warning includes people who claim to be broker employees, exchange officials or “account managers.” A genuine support representative should not need your one-time code to take control of the account.
- Use a unique password and enable the strongest available sign-in protection.
- Do not approve a login, mandate or transfer you did not initiate.
- Do not install screen-sharing or remote-control software at a caller’s request.
- Lock your phone and update the operating system and broker application from official stores.
- Review login, order, fund-transfer and demat alerts as they arrive.
Reject risky documents and promises
SEBI cautions against signing blank or partly completed delivery instruction slips, accepting assured or fixed-return claims, and responding to messages promising unusually large profits. Complete documents yourself, keep copies and use the provider’s published complaint route when something looks wrong.

Monitor the account after the first trade
Safety does not end when the order shows “complete.” Set a recurring review of your broker ledger, contract notes, demat statements, bank entries and exchange messages. SEBI encourages regular review of statements and accurate contact information.
Monthly record check
- Match every trade in the broker statement with a contract note.
- Match securities credited or debited in the demat statement with executed trades.
- Match money movements in the bank statement with the broker ledger.
- Check that fees and taxes follow the tariff you accepted.
- Confirm that email, mobile number and correspondence address remain current.
Keep records in a secure location for as long as your tax, regulatory or personal-finance needs require. If you close an account later, download final statements and obtain written confirmation of closure and any outstanding balance.
What to do when something goes wrong
The application is rejected or stuck in KYC
Read the stated reason rather than opening a second account immediately. Common causes include a document mismatch, unreadable upload, outdated address or failed verification. Ask the broker or DP which field must be corrected, resubmit through the authenticated channel and retain the acknowledgement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe order is rejected or remains open
Check the exact status message, available funds, trading hours and the fields you entered. If you still do not understand it, contact the broker before retrying. A second order can create an unintended duplicate if the first one later executes.
The contract note is missing after 24 hours
Request it through the broker’s official support or compliance contact and keep the order number and date. NSE and SEBI investor guidance treats the contract note or confirmation memo as an essential record.
The holding or bank debit does not match
Collect the contract note, order history, demat statement and bank entry. Report the discrepancy promptly to the broker and DP, ask for a written case number and escalate through the intermediary’s formal grievance process if it is not resolved.
You suspect unauthorized access or fraud
Change the password from a trusted device, disable or revoke suspicious authorizations, contact the broker’s official security channel and notify your bank when money is involved. Preserve messages, phone numbers, screenshots and transaction references. Do not negotiate with the person who contacted you or send more money to “unlock” a withdrawal.

The risks you cannot remove
Opening the accounts correctly reduces operational and fraud risk; it does not make equity investing safe in the sense of guaranteeing your capital. Prices fluctuate, a company can lose value or fail, and your shares may become worthless. Dividends are discretionary and not guaranteed. The amount you can lose is therefore not limited to a broker fee or a temporary delay: it can include part or all of the money invested.
Use the regulated account structure, documented instructions and regular reconciliation to control preventable mistakes. Make the investment decision only after accepting that market risk remains.
