When AI increases the amount, difficulty, risk or pace of your job, negotiate from documented changes rather than from the technology itself. Map your original duties against today’s work, record review and correction time, identify the decisions and risks you now carry, and connect those changes to your employer’s role levels, pay bands and review rules. Bring comparable salary data for your location and experience, then request a specific review of scope, classification, compensation and workload controls.

There is no universal “AI raise” percentage and no general rule that an expanded workload automatically produces a raise. Your rights depend on your country or state, worker status, contract and any collective agreement. The practical goal is to make the change measurable and obtain a written decision, timeline or workload adjustment.

What counts as an AI-related increase in workload?

An AI system can remove one task while adding several others. Treat the whole workflow as your workload, including verification, exception handling, correction, documentation, training and accountability.

Safe Work Australia warns that when routine tasks are automated, employees may be left with more complex or cognitively demanding work. Its guidance also notes that technology setting the pace can increase demands. In practice, an AI-assisted process may require you to:

  • Check every output for accuracy, bias, completeness or compliance before it reaches a customer.
  • Investigate exceptions, failed prompts, outages, data-quality problems and edge cases that the previous manual process handled differently.
  • Correct errors and redo work when an output is unusable, while still meeting the old volume target.
  • Train coworkers, maintain prompt or process documentation, and explain limitations to clients or managers.
  • Make decisions, approve recommendations or accept legal, financial, safety or reputational responsibility that used to sit elsewhere.
  • Work at a faster pace because the system increases expected throughput without adding staff or review time.

A useful test is whether the end-to-end job has changed, not whether one keystroke takes less time. If the employer expects the same quality, a larger volume and your sign-off on machine-generated work, those are separate facts to document.

“Routine tasks are automated, workers can be left with more complex or cognitively demanding tasks – fewer workers may be needed but their workload may be more intense.”

Safe Work Australia, Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies — Managing risks

How do I document what changed?

Prepare a short before-and-after map, then maintain a dated log. The map gives the meeting a clear structure; the log supplies evidence when the discussion turns to volume, time or accountability.

Build a before-and-after task map

Work dimension Before the AI workflow Current workflow Evidence to collect
Core production Tasks, normal volume and average time Automated steps plus new checks and rework Samples, ticket counts, time records
Exceptions Known exception rate and who handled it New failure modes, escalations and outage work Incident dates, escalation messages
Quality control Existing review standard Required human verification, fact checking or editing Review checklist, correction totals
Accountability Approval and decision owner Your sign-off, override decisions or client explanations Updated approval paths, emails, meeting notes
Capability Training already expected Tool training, coaching and documentation you provide Training hours, materials, attendee lists
Targets and pace Old quota, service level or deadline New target, shorter cycle or unchanged target with added checks Dashboards, schedules, target notices

Keep a dated workload log

For each representative week, record hours or minutes spent using the tool, reviewing outputs, correcting errors, handling exceptions, training others and resolving incidents. Note the number and complexity of items, the decisions you made, the risk you carried and any target change. Keep copies of instructions showing when the new process became effective.

Use company-approved storage and remove customer or confidential information from personal notes. You need enough detail to establish the work pattern, not a copy of protected data. If time tracking is prohibited, record observable counts such as cases reviewed, escalations closed or training sessions delivered.

Separate time saved from responsibility added

Do not claim that automation added work if it genuinely reduced your total effort. Instead, show the trade-off: for example, drafting may take 20 minutes less, while verification, correction and client explanation add 35 minutes. Also identify changes that are not captured by time, such as being the final decision-maker or carrying a new compliance obligation.

How do I connect the change to pay and promotion rules?

Ask your employer to explain how the expanded duties fit its job architecture. The UK Government’s guidance on pay, promotion and rewards says employees should understand how to increase pay or obtain a promotion and how decisions are made. That guidance applies to England, Scotland and Wales; it is not a worldwide legal requirement.

Request the written job description, current level or grade, pay band, salary-review calendar, promotion criteria and the effective date of the changed duties. Then ask which criterion the new work affects: scope, complexity, skills, accountability, supervision, business impact or market position. If the employer has no formal band, ask what comparable internal roles are used and who makes the decision.

Frame the issue as a role-alignment question rather than a demand based on novelty: “My responsibilities now include independent review, exception ownership and client sign-off. Which level and salary-review criteria cover those responsibilities?” This invites the decision-maker to apply an existing process or acknowledge that one is missing.

Questions that expose the decision process

  • What duties are officially part of my role from the implementation date?
  • Which level or pay band includes this degree of complexity and decision authority?
  • When is the next salary review, and can a scope change be reviewed before that date?
  • What evidence is required for reclassification or promotion?
  • Who approves an adjustment, and when will I receive a written answer?

What salary data should I bring?

Use comparisons that match your job, location and level. The U.S. Department of Labor Veterans’ Employment and Training Service TEAMS Salary Negotiation Participant Guide 2026 (February 2026) recommends comparing salary information by job title, location, experience and skills, and preparing for counteroffers and negotiation scenarios.

Build a small set of like-for-like references rather than collecting the highest number you can find. Record the source date, geography, currency, employment type and whether the figure is base pay, total cash or an hourly rate. Explain the similarities and differences between each reference and your role.

Comparison check What to verify Why it matters
Title and level Same function, seniority and decision authority A title alone may hide different scopes
Location Same city, labor market or remote-pay policy Pay ranges can vary by geography
Experience Years, specialist knowledge and management duties AI-tool familiarity is only one skill factor
Skills Technical, regulatory, client and language requirements New review or oversight skills may change the match
Pay measure Base salary, bonus, equity, allowance or hourly rate Different measures cannot be compared directly

The guide does not establish a raise percentage for AI-related work, and no defensible universal percentage follows from the sources available. Your evidence supports a review of the job’s value and conditions; it does not prove a particular number.

What compensation or workload outcomes can I propose?

Offer more than one way to address the change. A menu lets the employer solve the underlying problem even if its payroll process cannot deliver an immediate base-pay adjustment.

Option When it fits Details to define
Salary adjustment The expanded scope is permanent and fits a higher market or internal level Amount or range, effective date, approver and review date
Reclassification or promotion Decision authority, complexity or accountability now match a higher grade New title, level, band, criteria and implementation date
Temporary allowance A pilot or transition adds duties for a limited period End date, renewal rule and what happens if the pilot becomes permanent
Paid training time The employer expects new tool, compliance or oversight skills Hours, provider, scheduling and whether training is mandatory
Target or deadline reset Review and correction consume capacity New volume, quality standard, service level and measurement method
Additional staffing or specialist support Exceptions or risk exceed one person’s capacity Headcount, escalation coverage and response times
Narrower responsibility The employer will not fund the added accountability Tasks removed, approval owner and limits on client or compliance sign-off

Put a measurable condition on any deferred solution. For example, agree that a review will occur on a stated date after a defined pilot, using recorded volume, correction time and responsibility criteria, with a named decision-maker.

How should I conduct the compensation conversation?

Request a dedicated meeting with the person who can change scope or pay. Bring a one-page summary, supporting log and salary comparisons; do not rely on an improvised explanation during a routine check-in.

  1. State the implementation point. Identify when the AI workflow started and which duties changed.
  2. Show the end-to-end workload. Compare old and current volume, review time, exceptions, rework, training and pace.
  3. Name accountability. Specify decisions, approvals, client commitments or risk controls you now own.
  4. Connect to the framework. Ask how those duties map to the role description, level, pay band and review criteria.
  5. Present your requested outcomes. Offer a preferred solution and practical alternatives such as reclassification, an allowance, paid training or target changes.
  6. Ask for a decision path. Confirm the approver, evidence required, effective date and next meeting.
  7. Handle objections with questions. If the answer is “the tool saves time,” ask how review, error ownership and the new target are measured.

A script you can adapt

“Since the AI workflow began on [date], I now review and correct [type and volume of work], handle [exceptions], and am accountable for [specific decisions]. My records show [documented time, volume or target change]. Can we review how these responsibilities fit my role level and pay band, and agree on compensation and workload criteria for this work?”

Keep the tone factual. You are asking for a role and workload review, not asserting that a particular technology guarantees a particular raise.

Questions to ask in the meeting

  • Which responsibilities are now permanent, and which tasks should stop or be deprioritized?
  • What quality, review and volume standards apply to machine-generated work?
  • What paid training, human support and override authority are available?
  • If pay cannot change now, what trigger, date and decision-maker will reopen the review?
  • How will errors, outages and disputed outputs be assigned and recorded?

What if my employer says AI makes me more productive?

Accept genuine time savings, then show the complete production system. Productivity is not the same as capacity when the employer adds verification, correction, risk ownership or a higher quota.

Use a side-by-side example: “Drafting fell from 40 to 20 minutes, but mandatory checking averages 25 minutes, corrections average 10 minutes, and the weekly target rose by 30 percent.” If your total effort is lower, ask whether the employer will convert the gain into a reduced target, higher-value duties with appropriate level recognition, training time or a documented productivity-sharing arrangement.

Ask what metric management uses. A count of generated outputs can conceal review queues and failure handling. A credible measure should include quality, rework, exceptions, customer outcomes and the time needed to exercise human judgment.

How do unions and worker-voice rules affect the discussion?

Worker representation can turn an individual workload concern into a documented consultation or bargaining issue. The Welsh Government’s November 2025 guidance for devolved public-sector workplaces emphasizes social partnership, human oversight, fair work, workforce capability and protecting jobs when algorithmic systems are introduced. Its scope is those Welsh public-sector settings, not every employer.

The Communications Workers of America has stated that it will bargain over workload intensification, compensation, benefits, automated decisions and sharing productivity gains. That is a union bargaining position, not a universal legal entitlement. If you are represented, check the collective agreement before agreeing to a permanent duty change; notice, consultation, classification or bargaining provisions may apply.

What to take to a representative

  • The original and current job descriptions, implementation notices and target changes.
  • Your dated workload log, examples of exceptions and evidence of new accountability.
  • Any policy describing AI use, monitoring, quality review or performance scoring.
  • Your proposed remedy and the date by which you need a response.

What if AI is used to set my performance or pay?

Ask what data and criteria are used, how errors are corrected and how you can challenge an outcome. In the United Kingdom, Information Commissioner’s Office guidance explains that Article 22 of the UK GDPR restricts certain solely automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects; some pay decisions may fall within that framework, depending on the facts.

Those protections have conditions and are UK-specific. They do not make every algorithm-assisted decision unlawful, and they do not apply identically in other countries. Ask for meaningful human review, the identity or function of the reviewer, the factors considered and a way to submit relevant evidence. Outside the UK, check the privacy, employment and anti-discrimination rules in the jurisdiction governing your work.

Questions about an automated decision

  • Is a person making the final decision, or merely approving a system score?
  • What data sources, time period and weighting affect the result?
  • How can I correct inaccurate data or provide context the system missed?
  • What happens to my pay or performance record while a challenge is pending?

How do I close the loop after the meeting?

Send a concise factual recap within a day or two. List the changed duties, evidence discussed, requested outcome, agreed actions, owners, dates and unresolved questions. Ask the recipients to correct factual errors.

Keep the original role description, revised documents, pay criteria, meeting notes and any written proposal in an accessible personal record that does not violate confidentiality rules. If the employer promises a review, calendar the date and preserve the agreed measurement method. If the answer is delayed, send a neutral follow-up that quotes the commitment and asks for a new decision date.

A written record shows what was discussed; it does not by itself create a legal right to extra pay. If the change affects classification, overtime, discrimination, health and safety, privacy or a collective agreement, obtain advice from a union, worker representative or qualified employment professional in the relevant jurisdiction.

How should I compare two proposed arrangements?

Evaluate the whole employment arrangement, not salary alone. Use the same questions for the current role and each proposal.

Decision axis Questions to answer
End-to-end workload What are the total hours, volume, verification, exceptions, rework and training requirements?
Scope and accountability Who reviews outputs, owns decisions, handles failures and carries client or compliance responsibility?
Skills and development What new expertise is required, and is paid time or instruction provided?
Pay and classification How does the work map to the level, band, salary review or promotion process?
Targets, staffing and control Will pace rise, will capacity change, and can workers influence how performance is measured?
Oversight and challenge Who can override an output, and can you obtain meaningful human review of a significant decision?

A proposal that adds a small allowance but leaves impossible targets and unlimited liability may be weaker than a lower immediate payment paired with reduced volume, training and a firm reclassification review.

What negotiation mistakes should I avoid?

  • Arguing from the existence of AI alone. Describe the duties, decisions and measurable workload instead.
  • Counting only the automated step. Include checking, correction, exception handling, outages and training.
  • Using mismatched salary figures. Filter for location, level, experience, skills and pay type.
  • Demanding a percentage without a basis. Ask for role alignment and state how your requested amount was derived.
  • Accepting a vague promise. Secure a trigger, date, owner and evidence standard.
  • Ignoring responsibility boundaries. Clarify who approves, who can override and who handles a failed output.
  • Sharing confidential records casually. Redact personal data and use approved systems.
  • Treating general guidance as local law. Verify the rules for your jurisdiction, contract and worker status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I negotiate extra pay if I am a contractor rather than an employee?

Review the statement of work, change-order clause, acceptance criteria and rate structure first. A larger AI-assisted workload may support a revised scope or fee under the contract, but employee pay-band and promotion processes may not apply to an independent contractor.

How can I document AI-related work without exposing confidential information?

Record categories, counts, time ranges and anonymized examples instead of customer names, prompts or proprietary output. Store notes in an employer-approved location and ask what documentation the company permits before attaching samples.

Can I ask for compensation retroactive to the AI rollout date?

You can request an effective date tied to when duties materially changed, but approval depends on policy, contract, collective agreement and local law. Present the implementation notice and dated workload records, then ask who has authority to set the date.

What should I do if my manager refuses to discuss the workload change?

Send a factual written request that identifies the changed duties, evidence and a reasonable meeting date. If there is still no response, use the next internal channel—human resources, a formal grievance process, union representative or worker advocate—while preserving your records and continuing to meet safe, lawful requirements.
