Check your current contract, calculate the date you can actually leave, verify the new offer’s conditions, then propose one specific alternative date in writing. The employer may say no, so treat this as a negotiation rather than an entitlement.
Start with the date your current job can support
Your existing employment contract sets the practical boundary for any new start date. Find the notice period, any contractual terms affecting your departure, and the method for giving notice. GOV.UK advises employees to check their contract for notice requirements and related terms before handing in notice: Handing in your notice: Your employment contract.

Calculate a realistic final working day
- Locate the notice clause. Check whether notice is expressed in weeks, months, or another period, and whether the contract specifies when notice begins to run.
- Identify the correct notice date. Write down the day you would deliver notice and apply the contract’s calculation method. Do not rely on a general internet rule or a colleague’s experience.
- Allow for a handover. List the projects, clients, documentation, training, or access transfers that must be completed or assigned. A responsible handover may fit inside the contractual notice period, but it should not be assumed to shorten it.
- Turn the result into a proposed joining date. Include any time needed between jobs for travel, relocation, rest, or administration only if you genuinely need it and can explain the timing.
If the calculation is uncertain—for example, because the contract uses a calendar-month rule, has a probation provision, or refers to a collective agreement—ask a qualified adviser in the jurisdiction governing your employment before promising a date.
Do not promise a date based on an assumed “standard” notice period
There is no universal notice period that applies to every country, role, or contract. The date you propose should come from the document that governs your current employment, not from an assumed two-week or one-month convention. If your employer voluntarily releases you early, obtain that agreement in writing before treating the earlier day as final.

Make sure the new offer is safe to rely on
Before resigning, understand whether the prospective employer’s offer is conditional or unconditional. In the UK, GOV.UK says employees should wait for an unconditional offer before handing in notice because a conditional offer could fall through: Job offers: your rights. Conditions can include checks or other requirements, so read the offer rather than assuming that an accepted email is the final contract.
Check these offer details
- Whether the offer is expressly conditional and which conditions remain outstanding.
- The stated start date and whether it is described as fixed, provisional, or subject to agreement.
- Any probation, pre-employment screening, right-to-work, reference, or qualification requirements that could delay commencement.
- The employing legal entity, work location, working pattern, and pay or benefits start date.
- Whether the document gives a process for changing terms or identifies a contact who can approve a revised date.
An accepted unconditional offer can have contractual consequences in the UK, while the legal effect of acceptance differs elsewhere. If you have already accepted, changing the date is not simply an administrative edit; check the governing law and wording before you resign.
Ask before signing, using one concrete proposal
Raise the timing issue as soon as you know your current notice obligations, ideally during the offer discussion and before signing. Australian Government guidance specifically lists the employment start date among terms that may be negotiated and says the employer may decline a requested change: Accept a job offer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the right channel
- Use a call or meeting for the discussion. A conversation lets the hiring manager explain onboarding constraints and suggest alternatives.
- Follow up by email. A written recap prevents different people from relying on different dates.
- Keep the request separate from your resignation. Do not hand in notice until the new role is sufficiently confirmed and you know what date the new employer will honor.
State the date, not only the problem
“I need more time” leaves the employer to solve the scheduling problem. Give the current date, the date you can meet, and a brief reason tied to your existing obligation. A specific date also makes it easier for the employer to test your request against training cohorts, manager availability, equipment, and payroll setup.

Replace the bracketed text with facts you have checked. Do not invent a notice requirement, claim that a manager has approved an early release, or promise a date before confirming it.
Give a reason that is truthful and useful
The strongest explanation is usually short: your contract requires a particular notice period and you want to complete a proper handover. That tells the new employer the request is based on a defined transition rather than indecision. You can add a genuine logistical reason, such as a move or a pre-arranged commitment, if it materially affects the date.
What to emphasize
- Your enthusiasm for the role and intention to join.
- The date your current employment can realistically end.
- The steps you are taking to leave responsibly.
- Your willingness to discuss an alternative that fits the employer’s onboarding plan.
What to leave out
- Complaints about your current manager or workplace.
- Private details that are irrelevant to scheduling.
- Threats to reject the offer if the date is not accepted.
- Promises to breach your current contract or abandon unfinished work.
A concise explanation is a practical communication approach, not a guaranteed formula for acceptance. The employer still has to decide whether the timing works for its business.
Offer options without weakening your position
Present one preferred date first. If you know the employer has a fixed induction cycle, add one or two feasible alternatives rather than an open-ended range. Every option should be compatible with your actual notice and transition timeline.
| Arrangement | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Later full start date | Your notice period ends after the date in the offer. | That the revised date appears in the offer or a written confirmation. |
| Earlier start after an agreed release | Your current employer confirms an earlier final day. | Written confirmation from the current employer and no conflicting contractual obligation. |
| Different onboarding session | The new employer runs more than one induction or training date. | Whether pay, benefits, equipment, and access begin on the new session date. |
| Limited pre-start activity | The employer offers optional preparation before the formal start. | Whether the activity is paid, insured, voluntary, and consistent with your current employment terms. |
| Remote or location-adjusted first days | Travel or relocation is the constraint rather than notice. | Working location, equipment delivery, security access, and the date employment officially begins. |
Do not accept an informal workaround that leaves the legal start date, pay, or benefits unclear. If the arrangement changes a contractual term, ask who has authority to approve it and request written confirmation.

Respond to the employer’s answer
If the employer agrees
Thank the decision-maker and restate the exact date in your reply. Ask for the offer letter or contract to be amended, or request a clear written confirmation that identifies the original date and the replacement date. Acas says a job offer can be made verbally but is better in writing to avoid later misunderstandings, and its guidance says the start date should be included: Offering someone a job.

If the employer proposes another date
Compare the counterproposal against your contractual final day, income and benefits continuity, travel or relocation plans, and any onboarding consequences. Ask for time to check your current contract rather than agreeing immediately. If the date works, confirm it in writing using the same process as an accepted request.
If the employer declines
Ask whether there is another start date or onboarding arrangement that could work. You then have three practical choices:
- Keep the original start date only if you can lawfully and realistically leave your current job by then.
- Continue negotiating a date that follows your notice period, accepting that the offer may not remain available indefinitely.
- Decline or withdraw if the employer cannot accommodate a date you are able to meet without breaching your current obligations.
Do not resign first and hope the new employer will later make an exception. The Australian guidance notes that an employer may decline a proposed change, so plan for that outcome.
Document the final agreement before resigning
New Zealand Government guidance recommends getting job details in writing before giving notice, and keeping resignation communication brief: When you get a job offer. The same discipline is useful wherever you work.

Your written confirmation should identify
- The employer and role.
- The agreed start date, including the year.
- Any change from the original date.
- Whether the offer remains subject to conditions.
- Any changed location, working pattern, pay, or onboarding arrangements.
- The name and title of the person confirming the change.
Save the signed offer, revised contract, email confirmation, and any message from your current employer approving an earlier release. If the documents conflict, ask the new employer to resolve the conflict in one corrected document before you give notice.
Then give notice and manage the handover
Once the new arrangement is documented and any offer conditions are understood, follow your current employer’s notice procedure exactly. Deliver notice through the required channel, state the intended final working day, and keep a copy. If the employer disputes your calculation, pause and obtain advice rather than changing dates unilaterally.
Build a handover record
- List each active project, deadline, owner, and current status.
- Document recurring tasks, key contacts, approvals, and access-transfer steps.
- Schedule brief knowledge-transfer sessions where needed.
- Mark confidential information and return company property through the required process.
- Ask your manager to confirm any agreed early-release date in writing.
A clear handover protects your professional reputation and gives the new employer a credible reason to trust the date you proposed. It does not automatically waive a contractual notice period.

Jurisdiction-specific points to keep separate
| Jurisdiction or source | What the guidance establishes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Check your contract for notice terms; wait for an unconditional offer before resigning; accepted offers can have contractual consequences; written offers should state the start date. | Apply these points to UK employment situations, not automatically to another country. |
| Australia | The start date is a term that may be negotiated before signing, and the employer may decline a requested change. | Raise the issue before signing and plan for a refusal. |
| New Zealand | Obtain job details in writing before giving notice and keep resignation communication brief. | Secure written terms before leaving your current role. |
These are jurisdiction-specific official statements, not a single international rule. If your employment spans countries—for example, a foreign employer, remote work, or relocation—identify which law and contract govern each job.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Resigning before the offer is secure
Problem: You resign while checks or other conditions remain outstanding. Recovery: Ask the new employer for the status of each condition and avoid assuming the role is guaranteed. In the UK, the official advice is to wait for an unconditional offer.
Giving only a vague request
Problem: “Can I start later?” gives no planning information. Recovery: Recalculate your final working day and propose a specific replacement date.

Inventing a notice period
Problem: A manager or recruiter later discovers that the contract says something different. Recovery: Correct the record promptly, explain the verified requirement, and provide a revised date.
Relying on a verbal agreement
Problem: The recruiter, hiring manager, and payroll team hold different dates. Recovery: Send a written recap and request corrected offer paperwork.
Assuming flexibility is a right
Problem: You treat a negotiation request as something the employer must accept. Recovery: Prepare alternatives and decide in advance what date you can meet without violating your current obligations.
Ignoring the financial transition
Problem: A delayed start creates an unpaid gap or changes when benefits begin. Recovery: Ask the new employer when salary, insurance, leave accrual, and other benefits start, then compare that timing with your current employer’s final pay and coverage. Keep the figures specific to the written terms rather than assuming continuity.

A practical timeline
- Before accepting: Read the new offer, identify conditions, and calculate your current notice and realistic final day.
- During offer discussions: Tell the employer the date you can meet and propose a later date if necessary.
- Before signing: Resolve the start-date wording and any onboarding alternative. In Australia, the government specifically advises discussing contract changes before signing.
- After agreement: Obtain the revised date in the offer, contract, or clear written confirmation.
- Before resigning: Verify that conditions are satisfied or understand which remain, and confirm the date you will give your current employer.
- During notice: Complete the handover and keep evidence of any agreed early release.
- Before the first day: Reconfirm the start date, location, working pattern, equipment, and onboarding instructions with the new employer.
Decision checklist
- Have I read the current contract’s notice and departure terms?
- Can I show how my proposed date follows from the contract and handover plan?
- Is the new offer unconditional, or do I understand every remaining condition?
- Have I asked before signing where possible?
- Did I provide one concrete date and a truthful reason?
- Have I considered an alternative onboarding date without promising an impossible start?
- Is the final agreement written and consistent across all documents?
- Have I checked income, benefits, travel, and relocation timing?
- If the date was already accepted, have I obtained advice specific to the governing jurisdiction?
Bottom line
Negotiate the start date as a concrete scheduling issue: calculate what your current contract permits, verify the new offer, ask before signing, and document the answer. A later date is often negotiable, but the new employer can refuse it and local law controls the consequences of changing an accepted date. Do not resign until the offer conditions and the agreed start date are clear enough for you to rely on.
