Yes, you can move from construction into technology sales without a degree, but no employer-wide rule makes that route automatic. The most practical entry point is usually an SDR (sales development representative) or BDR (business development representative) role. These jobs commonly involve finding prospects, qualifying whether they are a fit, and booking meetings for more senior sellers. Your construction background can help when you turn real examples—coordinating crews, explaining technical issues, solving field problems, or handling schedule changes—into evidence of communication, listening, organization, persistence, and learning ability.
Requirements depend on the employer, what the product does, and how technical the sale is. A posting may accept related experience instead of a degree, while another may require a relevant bachelor’s degree. Treat every vacancy as its own set of requirements, not as proof that all tech-sales jobs are degree-free.

What “tech sales” means at the entry level
Technology sales is not one job. The first role you target determines the work you will do, the skills you need to demonstrate, and whether a degree is likely to appear in the requirements.
SDR and BDR roles
Salesforce describes SDR and BDR positions as common entry-level paths. Their core activities are lead generation, prospect qualification, and setting meetings for account executives or other sellers. Some teams work mainly from lists and outbound messages; others handle inbound inquiries or focus on a defined customer segment. Read the responsibilities instead of assuming every SDR or BDR job is identical.

Account executive roles
Account executives normally manage more of the sales process, from discovery and demonstrations through negotiation and closing. An employer may hire an experienced career changer directly, but an SDR or BDR job is more commonly presented as the starting point. Promotion is not guaranteed: ask how the company fills AE vacancies, what performance evidence it expects, and whether internal progression actually occurs.
Technical sales
“Technical sales” can describe sales of complex hardware, scientific equipment, industrial systems, or software that requires substantial product expertise. The term is broader than SaaS prospecting. Some technical-sales positions expect specialized education or close support from sales engineers and product specialists. Do not assume that a degree-free SDR route qualifies you for every technical-sales position.
Is a degree required?
There is no universal answer. Salesforce says junior salespeople may not need prior sales experience or a degree, and Computacenter UK advertises an early-career route for applicants with two to three years of sales or related experience where a degree is not required. Those examples show that degree-free entry exists; they do not create a rule for every employer or country.

That classification is broader than software SDR work, so use it as a warning to inspect the actual posting rather than applying it mechanically to every technology company.
| Opportunity | What to verify | How your construction background may fit |
|---|---|---|
| SDR or BDR | Outbound versus inbound work, meeting targets, segment, coaching, and degree wording | Communication, persistence, customer contact, organized follow-up, and comfort learning a process |
| Account executive | Required closing experience, quota history, sales-cycle length, and promotion policy | Relevant only when you can prove customer ownership, negotiation, or commercial responsibility from your actual work |
| Technical or scientific sales | Specific education, certifications, technical depth, travel, and specialist support | Trade knowledge may help with a related buyer, but it does not replace a stated technical qualification |
Choose a first role and product area
Start with a focused search instead of applying to every vacancy containing the word “technology.” Search SDR and BDR postings, then read the duties line by line. Record whether the job is primarily outbound prospecting, inbound qualification, account research, or a mixture.
A sensible hypothesis for a construction professional is to investigate products used by contractors, builders, and project teams. Familiarity with field workflows could make customer conversations easier, but it is not proof that a company prefers construction candidates. Validate the idea by reading the customer description in the posting and speaking with people who sell that product.

Questions to answer before applying
- Who buys the product, and what business problem does it address?
- Will you contact prospects by phone, email, social channels, events, or a combination?
- Is success measured by activity, qualified meetings, pipeline value, or another target?
- Does the employer require a degree, prefer one, accept related experience, or say nothing?
- What training and manager coaching occur during ramp-up?
- How technical is the product, and are sales engineers or product specialists available?
- What are the location, travel, schedule, and remote-work expectations?
Translate construction experience into sales evidence
Hiring managers cannot evaluate “hard worker” or “good with people” without an example. Build a short inventory of situations you personally handled. Use only duties and outcomes that are true.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Construction experience | Sales capability it can demonstrate | Evidence to describe |
|---|---|---|
| Explaining a technical issue to a customer, inspector, or new worker | Clear communication and adapting a message to the listener | What was misunderstood, how you explained it, and what happened afterward |
| Coordinating subcontractors, deliveries, or changing schedules | Organization, follow-up, and stakeholder management | The competing constraints, your communication method, and the completed result |
| Solving an unexpected field problem | Discovery, diagnosis, and practical problem-solving | The symptoms, questions you asked, options considered, and outcome |
| Handling a complaint or disagreement | Listening, empathy, and objection handling | The other person’s concern, your response, and the resolution |
| Following safety or quality procedures under pressure | Process discipline and reliability | The requirement, the steps you followed, and how you prevented a repeat issue |
| Learning a new tool, material, code requirement, or method | Coachability and product learning | How you learned, how quickly you applied it, and who benefited |
For each example, write the situation, your action, and the result. Do not invent sales quotas, revenue, account ownership, or customer-success metrics. If your work did not include a measurable number, describe the observable result: a schedule was recovered, a rework issue was avoided, a handoff was completed, or a customer received a clear explanation.
Example resume transformation
“Worked on commercial construction projects” is too broad. A truthful, evidence-based version might be: “Coordinated daily updates among the site supervisor, subcontractors, and delivery team when a material shipment changed; clarified the revised sequence and kept the crew aligned with the updated plan.” Replace the details with your own facts. The point is to show the behavior, not to relabel construction work as sales.
Build enough product knowledge to sound informed
You do not need to become an engineer before applying for an entry-level sales role. You do need to understand the target product well enough to discuss its customer and problem.
- Choose one product category. Read the company’s product pages, customer descriptions, implementation information, and job posting.
- Define the buyer. Identify the role that feels the problem and the role that may approve a purchase. For construction-related software, do not assume the field worker, project manager, and finance approver have the same priorities.
- Write a one-page problem brief. State the likely customer problem, the current workaround, what the product changes, and one risk or limitation a buyer might raise.
- Prepare discovery questions. Ask how the customer handles the process now, what delays or errors cost them, who is affected, and what a successful outcome would look like.
- Practice a short explanation. Explain the product without jargon, then explain why the issue matters to a particular customer.
Salesforce’s career guidance emphasizes researching the role, networking with sellers, listening, and showing a willingness to learn. A concise product brief and thoughtful questions demonstrate those behaviors more credibly than listing generic technology buzzwords.
Training options and what they do—and do not—prove
Employer-provided training
The BLS says many wholesale and manufacturing sales employers provide formal training. A technology employer may also teach its product, sales process, systems, and messaging, but the amount of support varies. Ask who trains you, how long ramp-up lasts, how calls are reviewed, and what a new hire must achieve during the initial period. Never assume “entry level” means no preparation is expected.

TrainYo example
TrainYo describes a free eight-week training and placement program intended to prepare people for entry-level technology-sector sales and says that not having a degree does not rule someone out. Treat this as an example to verify directly. The available description does not establish current cohort dates, geographic eligibility, placement terms, or an affiliate relationship. Confirm those details before committing time or changing jobs, and do not treat a short course as a hiring guarantee.
Computacenter UK example
Computacenter UK describes an early-career technology-sales program with two routes: one for recent graduates and another for applicants with two to three years of sales or related experience, where a degree is not required. This is a UK employer-specific example. It does not establish the requirements for U.S. employers or for other products.
Apply strategically without overstating your background
Tailor the resume
Put the evidence most relevant to the posting near the top: customer communication, coordination, troubleshooting, learning new systems, documentation, and follow-through. Use the employer’s accurate language where it matches your experience, but do not claim prospecting, closing, pipeline management, or quota attainment unless you actually did those things.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use a focused cover note
A short note can connect your background to the customer. Explain why the product area interests you, give one construction example that shows a relevant behavior, and state what you have learned about the role. Avoid presenting construction experience alone as proof that you are already qualified.
Network with useful questions
Ask current sellers how their day is divided, what new hires struggle with, how the team coaches calls, and what the job posting leaves unclear. Networking is for learning and building relationships, not requesting a referral before you understand the work. Keep a record of what you learn and use it to improve your applications.
Prepare for the interview
Expect questions about communication, persistence, handling rejection, organization, learning, and judgment. Prepare several situation-action-result stories from real projects. A construction example can work if it shows the behavior the interviewer needs.

Answering “Why sales?”
Connect the answer to activities you genuinely enjoy: understanding a problem, explaining options, coordinating people, and following through. Do not say that sales is merely an escape from physical work or a quick route to high pay. Employers want evidence that you understand prospecting and meeting targets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAnswering the degree question
Be direct: “I do not have a degree. I have built relevant experience by coordinating customers and crews, explaining technical issues, solving problems under changing conditions, and learning new procedures quickly. I am targeting roles where the posting accepts related experience, and I have studied your customer and product so I can speak specifically about the work.” Replace the examples with your own record.
Questions to ask the employer
- What percentage of the role is outbound prospecting, inbound qualification, research, and administrative work?
- What are the first-quarter expectations, and how are they adjusted during ramp-up?
- How is performance measured, and what percentage of the team reached its target in the period you can share?
- What coaching, call review, and product training are provided?
- What backgrounds have succeeded on this team?
- How do SDRs move into other roles, and what evidence is required?
Compare offers on more than the headline salary
Before accepting, create a side-by-side record for each opportunity. A high variable-pay figure is not useful if the quota, ramp, or attainment history is unclear.
| Comparison point | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Degree and experience | Is a degree required, preferred, or absent from the posting? Does related construction or customer experience count? |
| Sales motion | How much time is spent prospecting, qualifying inbound leads, managing accounts, or supporting renewals? |
| Product complexity | What must you learn, and when do technical specialists join a customer conversation? |
| Training and coaching | Who teaches the product and process? How often are calls reviewed? |
| Compensation | What is base pay, what is variable pay, how is it calculated, when is it paid, and what happens during ramp? |
| Target attainment | How is quota set, and how does the company explain recent attainment? Treat missing answers as a risk to investigate. |
| Practical conditions | Location, travel, schedule, remote policy, equipment, and any background or work-authorization requirements |
How to interpret published wage data
BLS reported May 2025 U.S. median annual wages of $72,080 for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives except technical and scientific products, and $104,920 for representatives of technical and scientific products. These are medians for broad occupational categories, not starting salaries for a new SaaS SDR. They include workers with different products, experience levels, and responsibilities. Use the figures as occupational context, never as a promise about your first offer.
Protect your finances during the switch
A career change can alter income, schedule, benefits, and commute costs before it improves your options. Treat the move as a financial project.
- Set a cash runway. List essential monthly expenses and decide how long you can manage an employment gap or a lower base salary. Include health coverage, transportation, tools, and debt payments.
- Compare guaranteed pay separately from variable pay. Build your baseline budget around base salary until you understand how commissions are calculated and paid.
- Ask about benefits and timing. Check health insurance, retirement contributions, paid time off, and when coverage begins.
- Do not resign for a course certificate alone. Training can improve preparation, but none of the examples above guarantees a job or income.
- Keep a transition log. Track applications, interviews, training costs, travel, and lost work hours so you can judge whether the plan is affordable.
If possible, apply and interview while still employed. A written offer with clear compensation and start-date terms is safer than leaving construction based on a verbal promise or an assumed promotion path.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming every tech-sales job is degree-free
Correction: Check the exact wording in each posting and the product’s technical depth. If a degree is listed as required, do not hide it; target roles that explicitly accept related experience or ask whether equivalent experience is considered.
Using generic transferable-skill claims
Correction: Replace “excellent communicator” with a real situation, your action, and the result. One detailed example is stronger than a list of adjectives.
Chasing a title instead of the work
Correction: Read the daily duties. An SDR role can involve substantial repetitive prospecting and rejection; an AE role can require a proven closing record. Choose knowingly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Promising a promotion timeline
Correction: Ask how internal moves are decided and what evidence is required. An SDR position may be an entry point, not a guaranteed promotion track.
Using broad salary data as a personal forecast
Correction: Separate national occupational medians from the written base and variable compensation in your offer. Consider geography, product, experience, and attainment.
Ignoring geography
Correction: BLS education and wage information cited here is U.S.-specific. The Computacenter example is UK-specific. Verify local labor rules, pay, work authorization, and employer requirements where you live.
Trusting an unverified training promise
Correction: Confirm cohort dates, eligibility, costs, placement language, and outcomes directly with the provider. A free or short program is preparation, not proof of employment.
