After a data breach, use a layered response: read exactly what was exposed, place a credit freeze or fraud alert for new-credit protection, inspect all three credit reports, review existing financial accounts, and set a repeating schedule for checks. A freeze or alert can make new-account fraud harder, but neither protects an existing bank or card account, detects every misuse of your information, or replaces reviewing statements and responding quickly to warning signs.
Your first steps should follow the breach notice and the information involved. Use the Federal Trade Commission’s incident guidance at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach, then keep records of every call, confirmation number, report and dispute.

What to do immediately after receiving a breach notice
1. Read the notice for the information that was exposed
Do not assume every breach included a Social Security number. The notice should identify the categories involved, such as account credentials, payment information, Social Security numbers or other personal data. The appropriate response depends on that list, the dates involved and whether the organization says your information was actually accessed or only potentially affected.
Note the organization’s fraud contact, the deadline for enrolling in any offered service, and the exact duration and scope of free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance. The FTC advises taking advantage of relevant free services offered after a breach: “If a company affected by a data breach offers you free services, like credit monitoring or identity theft insurance, take advantage of it.” That offer is a benefit, not proof that the service covers every kind of identity misuse.

2. Make a short incident file
Save the notice, enrollment instructions and any emails separately from the potentially affected account. Record when you received the notice, what data categories it names, and which protections you activate. Keep bureau confirmation numbers, copies of disputes and the dates you contacted companies. This documentation makes follow-up easier if an account is opened or changed without your permission.
Choose protection against new-credit applications
A credit freeze and a fraud alert address the same immediate concern—someone using your information to seek new credit—but they work differently. You may use both.
| Decision point | Credit freeze | Initial fraud alert |
|---|---|---|
| Main function | Restricts potential creditors’ access to your credit report for new-credit decisions. | Asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit. |
| Where to set it up | Contact Equifax, Experian and TransUnion separately. | Contact one nationwide bureau; it must notify the other two. |
| Cost | Free to place and lift. | Free. |
| Duration | Until you lift it. | One year; renewable. |
| Credit score | Does not affect your credit score. | The cited FTC guidance describes identity verification; it does not state a score effect. |
| When you apply for credit | Temporarily lift the freeze, ideally for the bureau the lender will use. | The lender is prompted to verify that the applicant is you. |
| Eligibility | Available to anyone. | Available if you are, or suspect you may be, affected by identity theft. |
| Can it coexist with the other tool? | Yes. | Yes. |
These terms come from current FTC consumer guidance at IdentityTheft.gov. Bureau procedures and online labels can change, so use each bureau’s current official instructions.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A freeze blocks prospective creditors from accessing your report for most new-credit decisions, which makes it harder to open a new account in your name. It is free, does not lower your score and remains in place until you remove it. Set it separately with all three nationwide bureaus; freezing one does not freeze the others.
When you legitimately apply for a loan, card, utility service or other credit, ask the lender which bureau it will check when possible. Temporarily lift the freeze for that bureau, or schedule a lift for the period the lender needs, then confirm that the freeze is restored. A freeze does not stop a creditor that already has access to an existing account from processing transactions.

When an initial fraud alert helps
An initial alert tells businesses to take reasonable steps to verify identity before opening new credit. You place it with one bureau, which must notify the other two. It lasts one year and can be renewed. Because an alert does not block access to your report, it is less restrictive than a freeze, but it can be useful if you expect to apply for credit frequently or want an additional verification signal.
If identity theft has already occurred, official recovery guidance describes an extended fraud alert that lasts seven years, provided you submit the required identity-theft documentation. An extended alert is not the same as renewing an initial one; follow the documentation instructions from the bureau or IdentityTheft.gov.
Inspect your credit reports, then keep checking
Start with all three reports
If the notice says a Social Security number or credit information was exposed, obtain your reports and look for accounts or activity you do not recognize. Review each report for:
- Credit cards, loans, collection accounts or other accounts you did not open.
- Hard inquiries from businesses you do not recognize.
- Incorrect names, addresses, employers or other identifying details.
- Balances, payment histories or account status that do not match your records.
IdentityTheft.gov says consumers can check their reports weekly for free through AnnualCreditReport.com. Weekly access is particularly useful soon after a breach, when new information may appear at different times. Save a copy or note the date of each review so you can compare changes rather than relying on memory.
Do not treat a clean report as a clean bill of health
A report can be accurate while another kind of misuse is occurring. A credit freeze does not prevent charges on an existing card, withdrawals from a bank account, changes to an insurance account or other activity outside the new-credit process. Credit reports also may not show a new account immediately. Continue reviewing your financial records even when every report looks normal.

Review existing accounts and statements
Bank and credit-card accounts
Read every bank and credit-card statement, including electronic statements you usually ignore. Scan for unfamiliar merchants, small “test” charges, changed payment details, new payees, transfers, ATM withdrawals and address or contact changes. Turn on transaction notifications where your institution offers them, and use a payment method’s own alert controls in addition to any monitoring service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInsurance and other financial statements
Review insurance statements and online account activity for claims, policy changes or contact information you did not authorize. The breach notice may identify a particular type of account; give that category extra attention, but do not limit your review to it. Existing-account fraud can continue even while a freeze is active.
Secure access when a warning appears
If you see an unauthorized transaction or account change, use the institution’s published fraud channel rather than a phone number in a suspicious message. Ask what evidence it needs, when the account will be restricted and how it will reverse or investigate the activity. Change the affected account’s password and PIN, and change any reused password on other accounts.
Build a repeatable monitoring routine
A routine is more reliable than checking once and assuming the risk has ended. Use the breach notice’s deadlines and your normal statement cycle to set calendar reminders.
At least weekly during the early response
- Check each of the three credit reports through AnnualCreditReport.com for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries and inaccurate personal information.
- Review bank and card transaction alerts and scan recent activity.
- Check the status of any freeze, fraud alert or free breach-related service you enrolled in.
Whenever a statement closes
- Read the complete bank, credit-card and insurance statement.
- Compare balances and transactions with receipts, transfers and expected payments.
- Confirm that contact details, authorized users and linked payment accounts have not changed.
When you receive an account or bureau alert
- Open the alert through the institution’s official app or website, not through an unexpected link.
- Determine whether the change is yours. A legitimate inquiry, address update or new account may still be worth documenting.
- If it is not yours, contact the affected company’s fraud department immediately and preserve the alert and account details.
After the first intensive period
Continue periodic report and statement reviews for as long as the breach notice or your identity-theft case warrants. Keep a reminder for the expiration of a one-year fraud alert or a free monitoring offer so you can decide whether to renew, replace or end it. A freeze has no expiration date, so keep it in place unless you need to lift it for a legitimate application.

Use free breach services and paid monitoring realistically
Evaluate the service offered in the notice
Confirm which bureaus are monitored, how long enrollment lasts, what information triggers an alert, whether you receive report access or only notifications, and whether identity-theft insurance has exclusions or claim requirements. Enroll before the stated deadline if the service addresses your situation, but continue your own report and statement checks.
Questions to ask before paying for monitoring
- Does it monitor one bureau or all three nationwide bureaus?
- How often does it check for changes, and which changes generate an alert?
- Is access to the underlying credit reports included, or charged separately?
- Does it include identity-monitoring features that check data sources beyond credit reports?
- What support, documentation and insurance terms apply if fraud occurs?
Credit monitoring can notify you about some report changes, but FTC guidance says it may not detect unauthorized bank withdrawals or someone using your Social Security number to file a tax return. Identity monitoring checks other data sources, yet no service should be described as comprehensive without provider-specific evidence. Monitoring is an additional signal, not a guarantee of prevention or detection.
What to do when you find suspicious activity
1. Contact the affected company
Call the company where the fraud occurred and ask for its fraud department. Request that it close or freeze the affected account, stop further transactions and explain the process for removing unauthorized information. Ask for written confirmation and keep the case number.
2. Change credentials and access codes
Change the affected account’s password and PIN immediately. Change reused credentials elsewhere, and use unique passwords for important financial and email accounts. If an account’s recovery email or phone number was changed, tell the company that the change was unauthorized.

4. Add or strengthen new-credit protections
If you have not already done so, place a freeze with all three bureaus or an initial fraud alert with one bureau. If the incident qualifies as identity theft and you have the required documentation, ask about the seven-year extended alert. These tools reduce the chance of additional new-credit accounts but do not repair an existing account automatically.
5. Dispute inaccurate report information
Dispute unfamiliar accounts, inquiries or incorrect personal details with the credit bureau showing the information and with the company that supplied it. Include copies of relevant records, keep proof of delivery or online submission and track response deadlines. Continue checking for related entries that appear later.
Match the response to the exposed information
Social Security number or credit information
Prioritize a freeze or fraud alert, review all three reports, and maintain weekly checks through AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for both new accounts and incorrect information that could signal attempted use.
Existing financial-account information
Prioritize statement and transaction review, account alerts, password and PIN changes, and direct contact with the financial institution. A credit freeze alone does not protect these accounts.
Information covered by a breach-related monitoring offer
Check the offer’s enrollment deadline, participating bureaus, duration and alert scope. Use it if relevant, but continue independent checks because the service may not cover every form of identity theft.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Freezing only one bureau and assuming all new-credit applications are blocked.
- Placing a fraud alert and then never reviewing credit reports or statements.
- Assuming a clean report means an existing bank or card account is safe.
- Clicking a link in an unexpected “fraud” message instead of contacting the institution through its official channel.
- Letting a one-year alert or free monitoring enrollment expire without recording the date and deciding what protection you still need.
- Paying for monitoring without checking the number of bureaus, alert frequency, report access and identity-monitoring scope.
A practical checklist
- Read and save the breach notice; list the exposed information and all service deadlines.
- Use IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for incident-specific guidance.
- Place a free freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, or place an initial fraud alert with one bureau; use both if appropriate.
- Check all three reports weekly for free at AnnualCreditReport.com during the early response.
- Review bank, card and insurance statements and activate transaction alerts.
- Enroll in relevant free breach services after checking their scope and duration.
- Respond to suspicious activity by contacting the company, closing or freezing the account, changing passwords and PINs, and reporting at IdentityTheft.gov.
- Record alert, freeze and service expiration dates, and continue a periodic monitoring schedule.
