Short answer: The practical way to mine Dogecoin in 2026 is with a Scrypt application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) connected to a pool that supports Litecoin/Dogecoin merged mining. CPU and GPU mining are technically possible, but they are generally educational or experimental rather than profitable. Before buying equipment, calculate electricity, cooling, pool fees, hardware cost, and the value of both DOGE and any merged-mined LTC rewards.
This guide explains how Dogecoin mining works, what equipment you need, how to connect an ASIC to a pool, how payouts reach a wallet, how to estimate profit, and how to troubleshoot the most common failures. Current market and network figures are identified as snapshots because mining economics and pool policies change constantly.

Is Dogecoin mining still profitable?
It can be profitable for an operator with an efficient Scrypt ASIC, inexpensive electricity, suitable electrical service, and a way to manage heat and noise. It is not automatically profitable. At ordinary residential electricity rates, an older ASIC can lose money even when it is producing DOGE every day.

A GPU may still produce some hashrate, but the income is normally too low to justify its electricity consumption. CPU mining is best treated as a technical experiment or a way to learn how proof-of-work systems operate, not as a serious way to acquire DOGE. Dogecoin’s official mining guide provides the project’s basic hardware and setup guidance.

The correct economic question is not how many DOGE an ASIC earns. It is whether the value of all eligible mining rewards exceeds the total cost of running and owning the operation:
- Electricity
- Pool fees
- Cooling and ventilation
- Hosting or rent, if applicable
- Downtime and maintenance
- Hardware purchase, shipping, taxes, and repairs
- Taxes and possible insurance or electrical work
If your objective is simply to gain exposure to the price of DOGE, buying DOGE directly may be simpler and less risky than purchasing, powering, cooling, and maintaining a mining operation.
How Dogecoin mining works
Dogecoin uses Scrypt proof of work. Miners collect valid pending transactions, assemble a candidate block, and repeatedly hash data until they find a result that satisfies the network’s difficulty target. The successful miner or pool submits the block to the network. Other nodes verify it, and the chain accepts it if it follows the protocol rules.
Mining performs two important functions:
- It helps secure the blockchain by making it expensive to rewrite confirmed history.
- It introduces newly issued DOGE and distributes transaction fees to the miner that finds a qualifying block, or to pool participants under the pool’s payment system.
Under the current protocol rules, Dogecoin targets approximately one block per minute, adjusts difficulty after every block, and pays a permanent 10,000 DOGE block subsidy. The project’s official FAQ and Dogecoin miner explanation describe these rules and the role of miners.
At the target rate, the subsidy implies approximately:
- 10,000 DOGE per block
- 1,440 target blocks per day
- 14.4 million DOGE per target day
- Approximately 5.256 billion DOGE per 365-day target year
These are calculations based on the target interval, not guaranteed realized totals. Block timing varies, and protocol rules could change. The continuing subsidy also means Dogecoin has ongoing issuance rather than a finite maximum supply under the current rules. That is different from saying that its issuance rate is unlimited without constraints: the current subsidy is fixed per block.
Why Dogecoin miners usually use Litecoin merged mining
Dogecoin and Litecoin both use the Scrypt algorithm. Dogecoin supports auxiliary proof of work, commonly called AuxPoW, which allows qualifying work connected to Litecoin mining to also support Dogecoin mining.
In practical terms, a compatible pool creates the mining jobs and handles the additional blockchain accounting. Your ASIC normally receives one Scrypt job; it does not divide its hashrate into one independent Litecoin operation and one independent Dogecoin operation. The same underlying hashing work can give the pool an opportunity to earn rewards on both chains.
This is why many pools describe the process as Litecoin/Dogecoin merged mining. Dogecoin’s official documentation explains that merged mining was implemented after the network’s hashrate declined, following the 2014 proposal and implementation in 2015.
Merged mining does not make electricity free, double the ASIC’s physical hashrate, or guarantee that every pool will pay every auxiliary coin directly. The pool’s accounting and payment rules determine whether you receive DOGE, LTC, other eligible rewards, or a combination. Always read the current payout policy.

Choosing between a full-size and small home miner
Choose a high-output ASIC such as an L9 when you have inexpensive electricity, the required 220–277 V service, adequate ventilation, and a location where approximately 75 dBA of fan noise is acceptable. Bitmain lists a maximum input current of 20 A and a net weight of 14.2 kg for the L9, so it should not be treated like a normal desktop accessory.
Choose a small miner such as the Mini-DOGE III when low power consumption, lower noise, learning, and hobbyist participation matter more than output. Its 400 W draw is easier to accommodate, but its lower efficiency means it may still fail to cover electricity at residential rates.
A cheap older ASIC is not necessarily a bargain. Compare its joules per gigahash, expected uptime, purchase price, repair risk, firmware provenance, and the cost of electrical and cooling work. A miner that is inexpensive to buy but expensive to run can have a shorter economic life than a more expensive efficient model.
Set up a Dogecoin wallet before mining
Use a self-custodial wallet controlled by you rather than sending regular mining payouts to an exchange. The Dogecoin wallet directory lists Dogecoin Core and other wallet categories, including hardware-wallet and self-custodial options.
A wallet does not physically contain coins. It holds or manages the private keys that authorize transactions; the DOGE balance is recorded on the blockchain. Whoever controls the private keys controls the coins, and confirmed cryptocurrency transactions generally cannot be reversed. Dogecoin’s guidance on wallet security and wallet backups explains these principles.
- Generate a fresh DOGE receiving address.
- Confirm that the address is for Dogecoin, not Litecoin or another network.
- Back up the seed phrase or private keys offline.
- Keep the backup away from the miner and from internet-connected storage.
- Where practical, confirm the address with a small test payment before directing regular payouts to it.
- Never share the seed phrase, private keys, wallet backup, or pool-account password.
Do not assume an exchange deposit address is suitable. The exchange must explicitly support DOGE mining-pool deposits and the relevant deposit format. LitecoinPool specifically warns against third-party payout addresses because you do not fully control them and an exchange could change or disable the address.

Choose a merged-mining pool
For most miners, a pool is the default choice because it reduces payout variance and handles the merged-mining mechanics. Compare these factors:
- Explicit LTC/DOGE support: Confirm that the pool currently supports both assets through merged mining.
- Payment method: PPS, PPLNS, PPS+, or another method changes payment predictability and variance.
- Fees: A fee directly reduces gross mining revenue.
- DOGE and LTC thresholds: A low daily balance may remain on the pool until it reaches the relevant threshold.
- Wallet requirements: Some pools require a DOGE address before DOGE rewards are credited.
- Payout timing and address locks: Changing an address may trigger a security delay.
- Server location: A nearby endpoint can reduce latency and stale shares.
- TLS or SSL support: Encrypted connections reduce the risk of Stratum traffic interception.
- Failover endpoints: Multiple ports or servers can reduce downtime.
- Worker monitoring: Look for hashrate history, offline alerts, rejected-share data, and payout records.
- Pool concentration: A large pool may be convenient but can raise network-decentralization concerns.
- Accounting of merged assets: Determine whether DOGE, LTC, and any other eligible rewards are paid directly or incorporated into the pool’s rate.
Example: LitecoinPool
LitecoinPool’s help page currently lists these example endpoints:
Europe: stratum+tcp://eu.litecoinpool.org:3333
U.S. East: stratum+tcp://us.litecoinpool.org:3333
U.S. West: stratum+tcp://us2.litecoinpool.org:3333
TLS: port 3443
An example worker format is:
Username: your_username.1
Password: 1
LitecoinPool states that merged mining is automatic and does not require special miner-side configuration. Its current nominal PPS fee is 2%, but fees, thresholds, payout policies, and supported assets can change. Some ASIC interfaces require you to omit stratum+tcp:// and enter only the hostname and port.
Example: ViaBTC
ViaBTC’s official LTC mining guide currently lists:

ViaBTC’s public pool page currently shows LTC merged with DOGE and other Scrypt assets. These are ViaBTC-specific settings, not evidence that ViaBTC is universally the best pool. Use ViaBTC’s current LTC setup documentation and its official pool page immediately before configuring a miner.
Pool URLs, fees, payout thresholds, payment methods, and merged-coin policies are volatile. Do not copy settings from an old blog post or an unverified social-media message. ViaBTC has also published a warning to use only its official pool URLs.

Electricity cost
Electricity cost per day = (miner watts ÷ 1,000) × 24 × electricity price per kWh
For example, a 3,360 W miner consumes:
3.360 × 24 = 80.64 kWh per day
At $0.07 per kWh, that is approximately $5.64 per day. At $0.10 per kWh, it is approximately $8.06 per day. This excludes the electricity used by ventilation, air conditioning, networking equipment, and other infrastructure.
Revenue and net operating profit
Net operating profit = DOGE revenue
+ LTC revenue
+ other eligible merged-mining revenue
− pool fees
− electricity
− hosting
− cooling
− maintenance
− withdrawal or transaction costs
A rough DOGE-only estimate can be expressed as:
Expected DOGE per day ≈
10,000 × target blocks per day ×
(miner hashrate ÷ network hashrate) × (1 − pool fee)
This simplified formula does not fully model the pool’s payment method, Litecoin revenue, stale shares, orphaned blocks, pool variance, or other merged-mined assets. For a real decision, calculate DOGE and LTC revenue using the pool’s current information and include both currencies in the model.
Illustrative snapshot dated August 9, 2026
For illustration, Minerstat reported approximately 2.58 PH/s of Dogecoin network hashrate, 37.844 million difficulty, a 10,000 DOGE block reward, and a DOGE price of about $0.0706 on its DOGE calculator page. Market data used for the research snapshot showed DOGE near $0.070009 and LTC near $42.80. These figures are not stable facts and should not be used as a current quote after the date shown.
Using 2.58 PH/s and a hypothetical 16 GH/s ASIC:
- The miner represents approximately 0.000620% of the network hashrate.
- At 1,440 target blocks per day, the rough DOGE-only output is approximately 89 DOGE per day before fees and pool accounting.
- At $0.070009 per DOGE, that is approximately $6.25 per day before electricity and fees.
- A 3,360 W miner uses 80.64 kWh per day.
- At $0.07 per kWh, electricity costs approximately $5.64 per day.
- At $0.10 per kWh, electricity costs approximately $8.06 per day.
Under those assumptions, the DOGE-only result before pool fees would be approximately $0.61 per day at $0.07 per kWh and negative $1.81 per day at $0.10 per kWh. Litecoin merged-mining rewards could materially change the total, so this is not a complete estimate of an LTC/DOGE pool operation.
For a 700 MH/s Mini-DOGE III under the same network snapshot, the rough DOGE-only output is approximately 3.9 DOGE per day before fees. That illustrates the trade-off: the smaller miner is easier to operate at home, but it has far less output.
Break-even and sensitivity checks
For the 16 GH/s, 3,360 W example, the DOGE-only electricity break-even rate is approximately $0.0775 per kWh before pool fees. After a hypothetical 2% pool fee, it is roughly $0.0760 per kWh. This is not a universal electricity threshold because the result changes with the DOGE price, network hashrate, hardware efficiency, and LTC revenue.
Before buying, model at least these scenarios:
- Electricity at your actual rate, plus 25% and 50% higher.
- DOGE and LTC prices down 25% and 50%.
- Network hashrate or difficulty up 25%, 50%, and 100%.
- Several hours or days of downtime each month.
- Cooling costs during the warmest season.
- Pool fees and withdrawal costs.
- The full purchase price, shipping, taxes, electrical work, and expected resale value.
Revenue is approximately inversely related to network hashrate when all else is equal: a 25% increase in network hashrate reduces the miner’s share to about 80% of the prior level; a 50% increase reduces it to about two-thirds; and a doubling reduces it to about half. A 25% price decline multiplies the fiat value of the rewards by 0.75. Combining both changes can turn a small operating profit into a loss.
Simple hardware payback is:
Payback period = total upfront cost ÷ average net operating profit per day
If average net operating profit is zero or negative, there is no payback period under those assumptions. Do not rely on a payback calculation that requires a future DOGE price increase to work.
How to configure a Dogecoin ASIC
Preflight checklist
- Confirm the ASIC uses the Scrypt algorithm.
- Confirm its rated voltage, wattage, and power-supply requirements.
- Have an electrician verify the circuit when installing a high-power miner.
- Place the unit in a dedicated, ventilated location.
- Connect the miner to a stable wired network.
- Create and back up the DOGE wallet.
- Create the pool account and add the required DOGE and LTC payout information.
- Record the miner’s serial number, purchase date, seller, and warranty details.
- Download firmware only from the manufacturer or another source you have independently verified.
Configuration sequence
- Connect the ASIC to the correct power supply and approved electrical service.
- Connect it to the router or network switch with Ethernet.
- Find the miner’s local IP address in the router’s client list or with the manufacturer’s discovery tool.
- Open that IP address in a browser on the same local network.
- Change the default administrator password immediately.
- Open the miner’s pool or miner-configuration page.
- Enter the current official pool URL, protocol, hostname, and port.
- Enter the pool worker name, such as
your_username.1or the format required by your chosen pool. - Enter the worker password. Some pools use a simple placeholder such as
1; follow the pool’s current instructions. - Add backup pool endpoints if the ASIC supports them.
- Save and apply the configuration.
- Wait approximately 10 to 15 minutes for hashrate and pool statistics to stabilize.
- Check the miner and pool dashboards for active connections, accepted shares, rejected shares, temperature, fan speed, and reported hashrate.
Dogecoin’s official ASIC setup guide describes this basic process: connect power and Ethernet, locate the miner’s IP address, open its control panel, enter the pool details, and monitor the status page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat a successful setup looks like
After stabilization, the miner should show an active pool connection and the worker should appear online in the pool dashboard. Accepted shares should accumulate, the miner’s hashrate should approach its rated range under suitable conditions, rejected shares should remain low, and the pool should begin estimating revenue.
Pool-estimated hashrate is inferred from submitted shares and naturally fluctuates. LitecoinPool advises allowing roughly 10 minutes for its estimate to become more accurate. A short period of zero or unusually low displayed hashrate does not necessarily mean the ASIC is broken, but persistent failure requires troubleshooting.
How mining payouts reach your wallet
The pool tracks your accepted shares and credits rewards according to its payment method. When your balance reaches the pool’s payout threshold, the pool sends DOGE and, where applicable, LTC to the payout addresses you configured.

- Whether DOGE must have a separate address
- Whether rewards are paid directly or converted into another asset
- Payment schedule
- Address-change security delays
- Transaction or withdrawal fees
- Whether balances are forfeited, delayed, or treated differently when an address is missing
These rules are pool-specific. For example, F2Pool states that an account without a DOGE wallet address does not generate DOGE rewards under its policy. LitecoinPool says payout activity may be suspended for 24 hours after a payout-address change. Those policies are not universal Dogecoin protocol rules, so read the current terms of your selected pool.
Keep a separate record of payout dates, DOGE amounts, LTC amounts, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, and the fiat value at receipt. This makes it easier to reconcile the pool dashboard with your wallet and prepare tax records.
Pool mining versus solo mining
Why pool mining is the default
Pool mining offers more predictable cash flow because many miners share rewards and payments are calculated from submitted work. It is easier to set up, usually does not require you to run a full Dogecoin node, and lets the pool handle the merged-mining mechanics.
The trade-offs are pool fees, dependence on the pool’s accounting and uptime, payout thresholds, policy changes, custody risk while rewards remain on the pool, and the possibility that a large pool contributes to network concentration.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why solo mining is high variance
Solo mining gives your hardware the full reward only when it finds a valid block. It may find a block quickly or run for a very long time without finding one. An average expected interval is not a schedule.
Using the August 9, 2026 snapshot of 2.58 PH/s, a 16 GH/s ASIC has approximately 1/161,250 of the network hashrate. At a one-minute target block interval, its rough expected time to find a Dogecoin block would be approximately 112 days. A 700 MH/s device would have an expected interval of roughly seven years under the same assumptions. Actual results can be much shorter or much longer because block discovery is probabilistic.
Solo mining also requires more infrastructure: a synchronized Dogecoin node, block-template handling, compatible mining software or a Stratum bridge, and correct coinbase and payout configuration. Dogecoin Core exposes a self-documenting JSON-RPC interface. The authoritative commands for the version you install are dogecoin-cli help and dogecoin-cli help <command>.
dogecoin-cli getmininginfo
dogecoin-cli getblockchaininfo
dogecoin-cli getnetworkinfo
dogecoin-cli help getblocktemplate
These commands inspect or support node operation; they do not turn a laptop into a competitive Dogecoin miner. Dogecoin Core’s repository lists mainnet P2P port 22556 and RPC port 22555 and warns against exposing RPC to the public internet. Use firewall rules and do not forward the RPC port to the internet.

Technically, software can perform Scrypt work on general-purpose hardware. Economically, a laptop, phone, desktop CPU, or gaming GPU cannot compete with dedicated Scrypt ASICs for ordinary Dogecoin mining. The device may consume electricity, generate heat, and suffer wear while producing negligible revenue.
If you own a GPU and want cryptocurrency exposure, you could mine an asset that is designed for GPU mining and exchange the proceeds for DOGE. That may be a separate financial strategy, but it does not contribute hashrate directly to the Dogecoin network.
Cloud-mining contracts and hosted hashpower can remove the need to operate noisy hardware, but they introduce counterparty, contract, withdrawal, and pricing risks. Treat claims of guaranteed returns with particular skepticism. A contract can become unprofitable or be terminated even when the underlying network continues operating.
Security and operational risks
Firmware and management-interface security
- Download firmware only from the manufacturer or a verified official channel.
- Change default administrator credentials before connecting the miner to normal operations.
- Do not expose the miner’s web-management interface or RPC services to the public internet.
- Place miners on an isolated or restricted network when practical.
- Use TLS pool endpoints when available.
- Verify pool domains carefully; mining pools are targets for impersonation and phishing.
- Be cautious with second-hand ASICs. Factory-reset the unit and reinstall verified manufacturer firmware where appropriate.
- Do not install anonymous profitability firmware or software simply because it promises higher returns.
A 2026 academic study identified ASIC firmware distribution and Stratum communications as important attack surfaces, including risks from compromised firmware. The research is available at arXiv. This is a reason to verify software and network destinations, not a reason to assume every used miner is compromised.

Heat, dust, noise, and fire risk
An L9-class ASIC is not normally a living-room device. A 3.15–3.57 kW unit produces substantial continuous heat and approximately 75 dBA of noise at maximum fan conditions. Ventilation must remove heat from the miner and from the room; simply opening a small door may not be enough. Air conditioning can add a material operating cost.

Check landlord rules, insurance requirements, local electrical codes, noise restrictions, and any zoning or business-use rules before operating a large ASIC at home or in a rented facility.
U.S. tax and recordkeeping considerations
Retain:
- Pool payout statements and account history
- DOGE and LTC amounts received
- Date and time of each receipt
- Fair market value in U.S. dollars at receipt
- Wallet addresses and transaction IDs
- Electricity bills and meter records
- ASIC, power-supply, repair, and replacement invoices
- Hosting, cooling, networking, and electrical-installation expenses
- Sale, exchange, and transfer records
Federal, state, local, business, hobby, depreciation, and self-employment treatment can depend on your facts and jurisdiction. Keep records from the first payout rather than trying to reconstruct them later.
Dogecoin mining troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Miner does not power on | Wrong voltage, defective power supply, tripped breaker, loose cable | Disconnect power; verify the manufacturer’s rated input; inspect the power supply, cable, receptacle, and circuit. Do not repeatedly reset a suspicious circuit. |
| Miner powers on but has no IP address | Ethernet problem, router isolation, bad cable, failed network interface | Try another cable and router port; inspect the router’s client list; confirm that the miner and computer are on the same network. |
| Worker remains offline | Wrong pool URL, malformed worker name, incorrect password, blocked port | Copy settings from the pool’s official documentation; test a backup endpoint or supported TLS port; check the miner’s connection log. |
| Zero hashrate | Wrong algorithm, bad firmware, disabled hashboard, hardware failure | Confirm Scrypt mode; inspect board and fan status; review logs; use only trusted firmware; contact the manufacturer if a board is missing. |
| All shares are rejected | Wrong pool, malformed credentials, incompatible firmware, clock or network instability | Re-enter the pool settings; remove unsupported special characters; return to normal clock settings; test another official endpoint. |
| High stale-share rate | Network latency, unstable route, overloaded endpoint | Choose a geographically closer server, try a TLS endpoint, improve network stability, and compare results after the miner runs long enough to produce meaningful data. |
| Hashrate is below the manufacturer rating | High temperature, fan problems, power instability, normal measurement differences | Allow 10–15 minutes for stabilization; inspect temperatures, fans, power, and firmware; compare local and pool-reported hashrate. |
| ASIC overheats | Poor airflow, dust, high room temperature, recirculated exhaust | Improve intake and exhaust paths, clean the unit safely, reduce ambient temperature, or shut it down until cooling is adequate. |
| Pool balance is missing | Payout threshold not reached, payout delay, address not configured | Review the pool’s current threshold and payment schedule; verify the DOGE and LTC addresses and check for address-change security locks. |
| DOGE is missing but LTC appears | Pool-specific merged-mining accounting or missing DOGE address | Add and verify a DOGE address; read the pool’s merged-mining and payout policy; do not assume every pool credits every asset in the same way. |
| Frequent shutdowns | Overloaded circuit, thermal protection, defective power supply, firmware fault | Stop the miner and investigate the electrical and thermal causes before restarting. Have an electrician assess unexplained breaker trips. |
| Second-hand miner behaves strangely | Modified firmware, compromised credentials, damaged hardware | Factory-reset the unit, change all credentials, install verified manufacturer firmware, and inspect logs and network connections. |
A practical decision rule
Mine with a high-output ASIC if you have inexpensive and reliable electricity, the correct voltage and circuit, isolated ventilation, acceptable noise, and a profitability model that remains positive after a realistic fall in coin prices and rise in network difficulty.
Use a small home miner if your main goal is learning or participating in the Dogecoin ecosystem and you are comfortable treating electricity costs as part of a hobby expense.
Do not buy hardware if the calculation works only at an optimistic DOGE price, excludes LTC accounting, ignores cooling and downtime, assumes the manufacturer’s hashrate is guaranteed, or requires a payback period shorter than the equipment’s realistic economic life.
Consider acquiring DOGE directly if you want DOGE exposure but do not want the electrical, thermal, operational, counterparty, and hardware risks of mining.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mine Dogecoin with a gaming PC or laptop?
You can perform Scrypt hashing with general-purpose hardware, but CPU and GPU mining are generally not competitive with Scrypt ASICs. It is more realistic as an educational experiment than as a profitable way to acquire DOGE.
Do I need to mine Litecoin separately to receive Dogecoin?
Usually not when using a compatible merged-mining pool. The pool sends one Scrypt job and handles AuxPoW accounting so the same underlying work can support Litecoin and Dogecoin. You should still check how your selected pool credits and pays each asset.
What is the best Dogecoin miner?
There is no universal best model. A Bitmain L9 is more efficient among the models compared, but it draws roughly 3.15–3.57 kW, requires the appropriate voltage, and produces substantial noise and heat. A Goldshell Mini-DOGE III is quieter and uses about 400 W, but produces far less hashrate and is less efficient per hash.
Can solo mining Dogecoin be profitable?
Solo mining is technically possible but highly unpredictable. Using the August 9, 2026 network snapshot, a 16 GH/s miner had a rough expected block interval of about 112 days, while a 700 MH/s device had an expected interval of several years. Those are statistical averages, not payment schedules.
Is Dogecoin mining income taxable?
In the United States, IRS guidance generally treats mined virtual currency as income at its fair market value when received. Selling or exchanging it can create a separate gain or loss. Keep detailed records and consult a qualified tax professional because treatment depends on your facts and jurisdiction.
The Bottom Line
Dogecoin mining in 2026 is primarily an ASIC and electricity-cost decision. Connect a Scrypt ASIC to a reputable pool with current Litecoin/Dogecoin merged-mining support, use a self-custodial DOGE wallet, secure the miner’s firmware and network interface, and model revenue from both DOGE and LTC. If the operation is not profitable after electricity, cooling, fees, downtime, hardware cost, and a realistic difficulty increase, mining is not a cheaper substitute for simply buying DOGE.
