If a new employer has given you a second Universal Account Number (UAN), do not operate both numbers as active accounts. Tell your current employer, email EPFO at [email protected] with the current and previous UANs, and identify which one is current. EPFO’s published process is to verify the duplication, block the previous UAN and retain the current one. Moving the old provident-fund (PF) service and balance is a separate transfer step when it has not already happened.

What “merging two UANs” actually means

UANs are intended to provide one continuing identity for a member’s employment-linked PF accounts. When a second UAN appears after a job change, there is no member-facing one-click merge button described in EPFO’s published guidance. The practical solution has two parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Part What you do What the published EPFO process does
Duplicate-UAN resolution Report both UANs to your employer and EPFO, stating which is current. After verification, EPFO blocks the previous UAN and keeps the current UAN active.
PF service and fund transfer Check whether the old member ID is reflected under the current record; submit a transfer claim if it is not. The old PF service and balance are moved through the transfer process, which has its own prerequisites.

Blocking a duplicate number changes which UAN remains active; it is not, by itself, confirmation that every contribution, service period or balance from the old member ID has been transferred. Treat the two tasks as related but distinct and check both outcomes.

Which UAN should remain active?

Do not choose solely because one number is shorter, older or printed on a recent payslip. Tell EPFO and your current employer which employment is the latest one and identify the UAN you are using for that employment. EPFO’s described outcome is that the previous UAN is blocked and the current UAN remains active after verification. If you have changed jobs several times and find more than two numbers, list every number and the member ID attached to it in one report.

Until the records are reconciled, avoid signing in to both accounts for routine activity or asking another employer to create another UAN. Multiple logins can make it harder to tell which member ID contains a contribution and can leave an old record unchecked.

Before you contact EPFO

Collect the information privately so your report is complete and you do not create another account while trying to fix the first problem.

  • Your current UAN, the previous UAN or UANs, and the member ID associated with each employment.
  • The names of the employers connected with each member ID, plus joining and leaving details available in your records.
  • The mobile number and email address you normally use for EPFO communication.
  • Copies of payslips, PF statements or employer communications that help establish which employment belongs to which member ID.
  • The exact spelling of your name and other identifying details in each EPFO record.
  • A simple timeline showing when each job began and ended, which UAN was allotted, and when the new employer first reported you.

These notes help distinguish a duplicate-UAN issue from a missing contribution or an identity mismatch. Keep them offline or in a private folder. Never post a UAN, Aadhaar number, bank details, password or one-time password in a public comment or send them to an unofficial “help” service. You only need to provide account details through an official employer or EPFO channel.

Step-by-step: resolve the duplicate UAN

  1. List every UAN and member ID

Write down the number currently used for your latest job and every older number you discover. Match each number to the employer and member ID shown in your records. If more than two UANs exist, include all of them in the same report rather than opening another account.

  2. Tell your current employer

Give the payroll or HR team both the current and previous UANs and ask them to record the duplication with your employment file. The employer can verify the member ID created for the latest job and help identify filing or identity-detail issues. Ask for an acknowledgement, but do not give anyone your portal password or OTP.

  3. Email EPFO with both numbers

Send a clear message to [email protected]. State that a duplicate UAN was allotted after a job change, identify the UAN you are currently using, list the previous UAN or UANs, and provide the member IDs and employer names associated with them. Keep the message factual and avoid sending credentials or OTPs.

Subject: Duplicate UAN allotted after change of employment

I am reporting duplicate UANs. Current UAN: [current UAN].
Previous UAN(s): [previous UAN or UANs].
Member IDs and employers: [list each member ID and employer].
Please verify the records and advise the next step for transferring any prior PF service.

Replace the bracketed items before sending; the brackets are only a template. Retain a copy of the email and any reply. If you later follow up, use the same thread so the full list of numbers remains visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Wait for verification and follow the response

EPFO’s Employees Information Booklet and its UAN FAQ describe verification followed by blocking the previous UAN while the current UAN remains active. The published material does not provide a dependable processing-time promise, so do not assume that a particular number of days guarantees a result. If EPFO asks for clarification, answer from the records you collected rather than creating a new UAN.

  5. Check the old PF service after the UAN status is addressed

Review the current account’s service history and passbook information once EPFO has dealt with the duplicate. If the earlier member ID, contributions or service period is not reflected, use EPFO’s transfer-claim route to move that account under the current UAN. Keep the old statements until the transfer is visible. A blocked UAN can still have an old member ID whose service needs separate action.

  6. Complete any transfer prerequisites

Before starting an online transfer, verify that the previous employment has a recorded date of exit and that your current portal account satisfies its authentication requirements. The date-of-exit procedure and the online transfer screens have changed over time, so use the prompts displayed on the live EPFO member portal rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Why a second UAN can be created

EPFO lists administrative situations that can lead to a duplicate; these are possible causes, not a diagnosis for every member.

The previous employer did not file a date of exit

If the earlier employer’s electronic challan-cum-return (ECR) filing does not contain your date of exit, the system may not recognize that the earlier employment ended when the new establishment reports you. Ask the former employer to check its filing and correct the record through the proper EPFO process. A missing exit date can also stop an online transfer from being offered.

A transfer-of-service application was made through the new establishment

EPFO also identifies an application to transfer service through the current establishment as a circumstance associated with duplicate UANs. That does not mean every transfer application creates a duplicate, but it explains why the numbers can appear together in a job-change record. Report the application, if one was made, so EPFO can compare the member IDs instead of treating the records as unrelated accounts.

Personal details do not match

EPFO matches information between the previous and current member IDs. A difference in a name, or another identifying field, can prevent the old member ID from being listed or linked. Compare the details shown in both records and use employer and EPFO correction channels; do not try to solve a mismatch by registering another UAN. Check spelling, initials and the form of your name as recorded by each employer before asking for a correction.

How the old PF account is transferred

After the duplicate-number issue is reported, the transfer question is whether the earlier member ID’s service and balance are already available under the current record. If they are not, follow the transfer-claim instructions presented in the member portal for the old account. A transfer preserves the employment service trail and moves the eligible PF amount according to EPFO’s process; withdrawing the old balance is not a substitute for consolidating service under the active UAN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check both the service history and the passbook rather than relying on only one screen. The old employment may appear in a service list while a transfer entry is still being processed, or a transfer credit may be shown separately from regular monthly contributions. Keep the old passbook and statements so you can identify the exact member ID, contribution period and amount if EPFO asks for clarification.

Date of exit is a key online prerequisite

EPFO’s transfer-claims FAQ from 2020–2021 says that the previous employment’s date of exit is mandatory for an online transfer. The same FAQ describes a “Manage” menu and a “Mark Exit” option, with the update available only after two months from leaving the job and requiring an Aadhaar-linked one-time-password verification. Because that FAQ is older than the current portal, treat those labels and timing instructions as historical guidance and confirm what the live portal currently allows.

If you cannot update the date of exit

  • Check whether two months have elapsed since the recorded last working date, as described in the older FAQ.
  • Ask the former employer to verify its ECR filing and correct an omitted or incorrect exit date.
  • Use the current portal’s help or grievance route if the employer cannot resolve the filing issue.
  • Do not enter an invented date merely to make the transfer screen proceed.

If the old member ID is missing from the transfer list

Compare your name and other identifying details across the old and current records. Even a small deviation can stop the system from matching the accounts. Ask the relevant employer to correct its record or ask EPFO how to submit the required correction. Once the identity data is aligned, check the transfer list again.

Duplicate UAN versus transfer: use the right remedy

What you see Likely task Action
Two UANs are active or appear in separate employment records. Duplicate-UAN resolution. Report the current and previous numbers to the employer and email EPFO for verification.
The previous UAN has been blocked, but the older member ID or service history is absent from the current record. PF transfer. Check date-of-exit and authentication prerequisites, then submit the transfer claim shown by the portal.
The previous member ID does not appear for selection. Identity or record-matching problem. Compare details and pursue employer/EPFO correction before attempting the transfer again.
You are being asked to create yet another UAN. Potentially worsening duplication. Stop and ask the employer or EPFO to resolve the existing numbers instead.

What EPFO verification does—and does not—confirm

Verification establishes which UAN should remain active in the duplicate records. It does not promise that every old contribution has been reconciled at the same moment. After the block, independently check whether the previous member ID, service period and PF amount are visible under the current record. If any part is missing, pursue the transfer route and quote the specific member ID in your request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a transfer claim is not a request to change the active UAN. Do not send EPFO a second set of instructions asking to keep both numbers active. State the current UAN once, list all previous numbers, and then deal with any transfer separately.

Troubleshooting common outcomes

EPFO has not replied yet

Check that your email identified every UAN and clearly marked the current one. Keep the sent message and employer acknowledgement. Since the published guidance gives no guaranteed turnaround, use the official EPFO grievance or member-support options shown on the live portal if you need to follow up; avoid paying an intermediary who promises a faster block.

The employer says the old UAN cannot be found

Provide the previous member ID, employer name and any PF statement that shows the number. Ask the former employer to verify its own records and the exit filing. If the employer no longer handles the matter, present the same evidence to EPFO through its official channels.

The current UAN is not the number you expected to keep

Do not decide solely by which number looks newer. Tell EPFO which employment is current and provide the complete history. The published outcome is based on verification: the previous UAN is blocked and the current UAN remains active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transfer claim is rejected or cannot be filed

Read the exact portal error. Common record-level causes include a missing date of exit, an unmet authentication requirement or mismatched personal details. Correct the underlying record through the employer or EPFO before retrying; repeated submissions with inconsistent data can make reconciliation harder.

Service appears transferred but the balance looks different

Compare the old and current passbook entries, contribution periods and transfer references. A transfer entry can be recorded separately from regular monthly contributions. If an expected period or amount is absent, preserve both statements and ask EPFO to reconcile the specific member ID rather than opening a new UAN.

You have left the old job but the exit date is wrong

Do not estimate or alter the date simply to satisfy an online field. The former employer should check the ECR filing and use the appropriate correction route. Keep proof of the actual last working date, such as an employment separation communication, in case EPFO requests supporting information.

You changed jobs more than once

Make one chronological list of every employer, member ID and UAN. Include all previous numbers in the email, even if one appears inactive already. This gives EPFO the complete picture and reduces the risk that an unlisted older member ID remains outside the current service history.

Current portal and UMANG notice

The EPFO member portal’s current notice, retrieved in October 2026, directs users to UMANG for activation of existing UANs and generation of new UANs, and points to EPFO Services and face-authentication UAN services. That is an activation and allotment notice. It does not establish that duplicate-UAN reporting has moved away from the employer-and-email route described in EPFO’s duplicate-UAN guidance.

For this problem, use the live member portal for the screens and notices currently displayed, but continue to report the duplicate through your employer and [email protected] unless EPFO gives you a different official instruction for your case. Portal labels may differ from the older transfer FAQ, so follow current on-screen prompts.

Protect your account while fixing it

  • Use only the official EPFO member portal, your employer’s authorized payroll channel and EPFO’s published email address.
  • Never disclose your UAN password, Aadhaar number, bank details or OTP to a caller, agent or website promising a merge.
  • Do not publish screenshots containing UANs, member IDs, Aadhaar details or transaction references.
  • Save emails, employer confirmations, passbook entries and transfer-claim acknowledgements in one private folder.
  • Do not close, withdraw or abandon the old PF account merely because a duplicate UAN exists; first establish whether its service and funds must be transferred.
  • Be cautious of anyone promising a guaranteed processing time or asking for a fee to “activate” or “merge” a UAN.

A practical completion checklist

  1. Every UAN and associated member ID has been recorded privately.
  2. The current employer has been told about the duplicate.
  3. EPFO has received an email listing the current and previous UANs.
  4. You have retained the sent email and any case response.
  5. The duplicate-resolution outcome has been checked: the previous UAN is blocked and the current UAN is active.
  6. The old member ID’s service and PF balance have been checked under the current record.
  7. If they are absent, the date of exit, identity details and portal authentication prerequisites have been addressed before filing a transfer claim.
  8. You have verified the result in the member portal and kept the supporting statements.

The safest interpretation of “merge” is therefore: resolve the duplicate UAN through EPFO, then complete a separate PF transfer if the old member ID has not been brought into the active record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I merge two UANs myself online?

EPFO’s published guidance does not describe a one-click self-service merge. Report the duplicate to your employer and email [email protected] with the current and previous UANs. EPFO verifies the records, blocks the previous UAN and keeps the current one active. A separate transfer claim may still be needed for old PF service or funds.

Will blocking the old UAN automatically transfer my PF balance?

No. Blocking resolves which UAN remains active. Check the old member ID, service history and passbook under the current record. If the earlier service or balance is missing, follow the transfer-claim process and its prerequisites.

What if I have three or more UANs?

List every UAN, member ID and associated employer in the same report to your current employer and EPFO. Identify the UAN linked to your current employment and do not ask anyone to create another number.

Why is my previous member ID not visible for transfer?

EPFO matches personal details between member IDs. A name difference or another identifying-field mismatch can prevent the old ID from being listed. Compare the records and ask the employer or EPFO to correct the discrepancy.

Is a date of exit required for online transfer?

EPFO’s 2020–2021 transfer FAQ says the previous employment’s date of exit is mandatory. It describes a Mark Exit option after two months from leaving and Aadhaar-linked OTP verification. Because the FAQ is older, confirm the current portal’s instructions and do not invent a date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does EPFO take to block the duplicate UAN?

The cited EPFO guidance does not promise a dependable processing time. Keep your email and employer acknowledgement, monitor official responses and use the live portal’s grievance or support route for a follow-up.

Should I withdraw the old PF instead of transferring it?

Withdrawal is not a substitute for consolidating service under the active UAN. First resolve the duplicate and check whether the old member ID and funds have transferred; use EPFO’s transfer route when they have not.

Can I use UMANG to report a duplicate UAN?

The current portal notice points to UMANG for activating existing UANs and generating new ones. It does not say that duplicate-UAN reporting has moved from the employer-and-email route. Follow the live portal notice, but report the duplicate through your employer and EPFO’s published email unless EPFO gives case-specific instructions.

The Bottom Line

There is no published one-click UAN merge. Report every duplicate to your current employer and EPFO, identify the current UAN, wait for EPFO to block the previous number, and then verify and transfer any old PF service or balance that is still missing.
