Measure two things before you order: the space where the appliance will operate and the entire route from the unloading point to that space. Record the narrowest usable height, width and depth, then compare those figures with the exact model’s specification sheet and installation instructions. Finally, verify door swing, ventilation, hookups and the delivery company’s access rules.
An appliance can fit a cabinet opening and still fail at a doorway, stair turn or hallway. A route check done before scheduling gives the retailer and delivery provider time to resolve a tight passage, missing utility or access restriction.

The two measurements that determine whether delivery will succeed
There are two separate fit tests:
- Installation fit: Will the appliance fit in the finished opening with the required ventilation, door-swing, hinge-side and service clearances?
- Delivery fit: Can the packaged or maneuvered appliance travel from the unloading point through every gate, doorway, hall, stairway, turn and other pinch point?
Use the exact model number, not a generic “standard” size. The manufacturer’s product specification and installation documents identify overall dimensions, cutout dimensions and air clearances. GE Appliances’ measuring guidance also cautions that door-opening, hinge-side, ventilation, cleaning and pathway space all matter.

Write down the smallest usable measurement at each location. A large opening elsewhere does not compensate for one narrow doorway or a projecting baseboard.

What to gather before measuring
- A rigid tape measure long enough for the room’s largest dimension.
- The exact appliance model number and its current specification sheet.
- The model’s installation manual, including diagrams for cutouts, clearances and connections.
- A notepad or phone spreadsheet for recording measurements in the same units.
- A second person for long measurements and for checking whether a tape is level and straight.
- Painter’s tape or removable markers to identify measurement points without damaging finishes.
Sears’ delivery preparation guide likewise advises writing down the appliance dimensions and using a measuring tape. A basic tape is sufficient; a specialized measuring device is not required. Sears’ preparation guide
Start with the exact model’s published dimensions
Before measuring cabinets or doorways, copy the selected model’s stated width, height and depth. Check the diagram carefully for what each number includes. Handles, hinges, controls, feet, doors and other projections can change the space needed for passage or final placement. Note whether the dimensions describe the appliance alone, a required cutout or a recommended installation opening.
Save the installation instructions with your measurements. They may specify clearances that are not obvious from a product listing, such as space behind a unit for hoses or venting, a gap beside a hinge, or access needed for cleaning and service. If a retailer listing and the manufacturer’s installation document differ, ask the retailer which current model revision is being supplied and use the manufacturer’s instructions for installation decisions.
Measure the final installation space
Measure height, width and depth at the narrowest points
- Height: Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction above the opening. Check more than one point from front to back; a sloping floor, low shelf or trim can reduce the usable height.
- Width: Measure the opening at the front, middle and rear if possible. Record the smallest number. Include baseboards, molding, cabinet lips, counters and any other projection that reduces the clear opening.
- Depth: Measure from the rear wall or intended stop to the front edge of the counter, cabinet or adjacent wall. Check for outlets, valves, pipes and trim that consume rear space.
Measure twice and record the actual usable opening, not an estimate based on cabinet labels. GE Appliances specifically advises measuring the space and accounting for molding, baseboards and other pathway or installation obstructions. GE Appliances: Appliance—Prepping Pathways and Measuring Your Space
Check the opening and the surrounding room
Look above, beside and behind the opening. A unit may have enough body clearance but lack room for its doors, drawers or controls to operate. Check the hinge side, adjacent cabinets, counters, walls, islands and nearby fixtures. Mark the maximum door arc with painter’s tape if you are unsure where the door will travel.
Also identify the space needed to pull the appliance forward for cleaning or service. GE’s guidance expressly includes door-opening space, hinge-side space, ventilation space and cleaning space in addition to the body dimensions. GE Appliances’ measuring guidance
Apply model-specific ventilation and connection clearances
Do not treat one clearance as universal. Use the exact model’s installation instructions for required air gaps and for the room needed by cords, hoses, water lines, gas fittings and vents.

As general examples—not universal requirements—Whirlpool’s delivery guidance says to allow 1 inch at the sides and between side-by-side laundry appliances, 6 inches behind washers and dryers for hoses and venting, and one-half inch at each side of refrigerators for ventilation. The same guidance directs readers to check the model’s instructions. Whirlpool Professional Delivery & Installation
| Clearance or space | How to evaluate it | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Side gap | Compare the opening beside the appliance with the model’s stated air and installation clearance. | Whirlpool gives 1 inch for certain laundry examples and one-half inch for refrigerator examples; these are not universal values. Whirlpool |
| Rear space | Reserve room for hoses, cords, gas fittings and venting without crushing or sharply bending them. | Whirlpool cites 6 inches behind washers and dryers as a general example; follow the model manual. Whirlpool |
| Door and hinge side | Measure the arc and the side needed for the door to open fully and for drawers or shelves to clear adjacent surfaces. | GE identifies door-opening and hinge-side space as part of the measurement. GE Appliances |
| Cleaning and service | Check that the unit can be pulled out or accessed as the installation instructions require. | GE includes cleaning space among the measurements to consider. GE Appliances |

Walk and measure the entire delivery route
Begin at the unloading point
Start where the truck will stop or where the crew will unload, not at the kitchen or laundry room. Walk the actual route in order: driveway or loading area, gate, exterior door, entry hall, interior door, corridor, stairway or elevator, turns, and the final opening. Frigidaire’s delivery preparation guidance and GE’s pathway guidance both direct customers to examine the complete path and clear obstructions. Frigidaire: Prepare for Your Delivery · GE Appliances pathway guidance
Measure every pinch point
At each gate, doorway, hall and stair landing, measure the smallest clear width and height. Measure with the door fully open if that is how the appliance will pass. Account for the door slab, frame, molding, threshold, knobs, latches, hinges, handrails, shelves, wall-mounted objects and light fixtures. A removable door stop or decorative trim can change the usable opening, but do not assume it will be removed without permission.
Record turns separately. A doorway can be wider than the appliance while the adjacent wall, island or stair rail leaves too little room to rotate it. Manufacturers’ instructions require checking the whole path and obstacles; there is no universal width formula that guarantees maneuverability for every appliance shape and route. If a turn looks close, send the model number and route measurements to the retailer or delivery provider before scheduling.

Verify power, water, gas and vent connections
Physical fit is only one part of a successful installation. Read the model’s installation instructions and confirm that the existing connections match them:
- Electric: Check the required outlet, voltage, circuit and outlet location. Do not use an extension cord or alter wiring unless the manufacturer and a qualified professional say it is appropriate.
- Water: For appliances that need water, verify the shutoff valve, line type, location and condition, leaving the clearance required for the connection.
- Gas: For gas models, confirm that the required gas connection is present and suitable. Gas work should be handled by a qualified professional.
- Vent: For vented laundry or cooking equipment, confirm the vent route, termination and space behind the appliance specified by the model.
- Cabinetry and flooring: Make sure the opening, floor and surrounding cabinets can support the installation without unapproved carpentry or leveling work.

Read the booked service’s terms
Delivery and installation packages differ. Before paying or scheduling, ask what the provider includes and excludes, including stairs, elevators, long carries, parking, old-appliance removal, connection work and access conditions. Follow instructions about who must be home, pets, unloading access and preparation of the route. GE’s delivery information and Whirlpool’s service guidance emphasize that installation depends on meeting the provider’s requirements. Door and fixture removal policies vary by provider and by the specific delivery. Whirlpool says crews may remove exterior doors and may try to remove refrigerator or freezer doors when necessary. Maytag says its crews do not remove interior doors, handrails, banisters, screen doors or personal possessions. Ask the actual provider about the actual route, and obtain its answer before delivery day. If a door, rail or fixture must be removed, arrange that work yourself or with a qualified professional when appropriate. Never make a purchase decision on the assumption that a crew will dismantle part of your home.
Compare appliance candidates by fit, not just headline size
When two models meet your functional needs, compare the dimensions and installation demands that affect delivery:
| Comparison | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Overall height, width and depth | Does each model fit the smallest final opening and every route pinch point? | A cabinet fit does not prove route fit. |
| Published dimension inclusions | Do the numbers include handles, hinges, controls, doors or other projections? | Projections can determine whether a doorway or turn works. |
| Cutout and ventilation | What opening and air clearances does the installation manual require? | Required air space can make a nominal opening too small. |
| Door swing and hinge side | Can doors, drawers and shelves open without hitting walls or cabinets? | A body that fits can still be unusable. |
| Connection space | Is there room for the cord, water line, gas fitting, drain or vent? | Compressed connections can prevent installation or create a safety problem. |
| Existing utilities | Do the outlet, water, gas and vent arrangements match the model? | Provider crews may not perform new electrical, plumbing or carpentry work. |
| Delivery limits | Does the booked service accept the stairs, elevator, long carry and access conditions? | Service rules can stop delivery even when measurements look adequate. |
What to do when a measurement is close
- Re-measure: Check the narrow point again with the tape level and the doors or gates in the position used for delivery.
- Confirm the model: Verify that the model number and dimensions are current and that you have not measured for a similar-looking variant.
- Check the installation manual: Look for required cutouts, air gaps, hinge-side space and connection clearances.
- Send the route to the provider: Give the model number, every narrow measurement, turn details and photographs if requested.
- Ask about permitted preparation: Confirm whether an exterior door, appliance door or other removable item may be taken off, and who is responsible.
- Resolve utilities: Arrange qualified electrical, plumbing, gas or carpentry work before the delivery appointment if the installation requires it.
- Choose a different model or route if necessary: A smaller or differently hinged appliance may be safer than relying on an uncertain maneuver.
Do not treat a verbal guess from a salesperson as a delivery guarantee. The provider that will perform the delivery must evaluate its own equipment, crew and service rules.

Common measurement mistakes and their fixes
Measuring only the cabinet opening
Why it fails: The appliance may not pass the front door, hall, stair turn or final approach.
Fix: Measure from unloading point to installation space and use the smallest usable route opening.
Rank #4
- QUICK & EASY MEASUREMENTS: Fractions printed on the blade
- ADDED GRIP: Rubber overmold for added grip
Using nominal or “standard” appliance sizes
Why it fails: Models in the same category can differ in depth, handle projection, hinge position and clearance requirements.
Fix: Use the exact model’s specification sheet and installation instructions.
Ignoring trim and projections
Why it fails: Baseboards, molding, knobs, latches, shelves and handrails reduce usable space.
Fix: Measure the clear opening around every projection and record the narrowest point.
Leaving no room for connections
Why it fails: A body may fit while a hose, cord, vent or gas fitting cannot be installed without crushing or sharp bends.
Fix: Copy the connection and rear-clearance requirements from the model manual.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I measure the appliance with its doors and handles attached?
Use the exact model’s published dimensions and diagrams to determine what is included. Then account separately for any handle, hinge, control or door projection that affects the route or the final clearance.
What is the safest way to check a tight doorway or turn?
Measure the smallest clear width and height with doors open as they will be during delivery, record nearby walls and obstacles, and send the model number and route measurements to the actual delivery provider before scheduling. There is no universal maneuvering formula for every appliance and route.
Can the delivery crew remove an interior door or handrail?
Do not assume so. Policies vary: some services may remove an exterior door or try to remove refrigerator doors, while others state that interior doors, handrails and banisters are excluded. Confirm the booked provider’s policy in advance.
Who should do electrical, plumbing or gas work needed for installation?
Use a qualified professional for work that requires electrical, plumbing or gas expertise. Delivery agents may not be authorized to perform new wiring, plumbing, carpentry or related modifications.
