To measure AI exposure in your investment portfolio, look through your funds to the companies they own, estimate what share of each company’s business is tied to AI, and multiply that share by the company’s weight in your portfolio. Keep revenue exposure, broader value-chain exposure, and disruption risk separate: they answer different questions, and there is no universal AI-exposure percentage.
A useful result is not just one headline number. It shows how the number was defined, which holdings drive it, where funds overlap, what evidence supports each company classification, and the date of the holdings used.

What does AI exposure in a portfolio mean?
AI exposure is an estimate of how much of a portfolio is connected to artificial intelligence. The phrase can mean at least three different things: revenue a company already earns from AI-related products or services; business activity intended to benefit from AI; or the risk that AI changes a company’s competitive position, including by automating work or disrupting its products.
Those measures are related, but they are not interchangeable. Revenue exposure asks how much of a company’s business can be linked to AI today. Activity measures look for investment, partnerships, launches, or other signs of strategic engagement. Disruption analysis asks how AI could affect a business, positively or negatively. A portfolio may score highly on one and less highly on another.

It also matters whether you mean direct exposure or broader participation in the AI value chain. A company selling AI software may be a direct provider. Chip, networking, cloud, data-center, power, and cooling businesses may enable AI deployment without selling an AI application themselves. A company adopting AI may benefit from productivity gains, but that does not establish that a large share of its current revenue comes from AI.
For a personal portfolio review, report these categories separately and explain your definition. A single figure without its method can obscure whether it represents disclosed business revenue, a modeled estimate, a fund provider’s score, or a broad assessment of opportunity and risk.

Use a look-through calculation: identify each issuer across all accounts, estimate the issuer’s AI exposure under a clearly stated definition, multiply the issuer’s portfolio weight by that exposure percentage, and add the contributions. The result is a portfolio-weighted estimate, not a claim that the same percentage of your investment value will rise or fall with AI.
1. Inventory accounts and holdings
Gather every account that belongs in the analysis, then record each security’s identifier, quantity, market value, portfolio weight, fund share class, and holdings as-of date. Include individual stocks as well as pooled investments such as ETFs and mutual funds. Keep the account and share-class details: similarly named funds or classes can have different holdings.
Choose the denominator before calculating. For an all-portfolio estimate, use the combined value of the accounts and assets you intend to include. If you are analyzing only a particular account or equity allocation, label that scope instead of presenting its result as exposure for your whole portfolio.
2. Look through funds and consolidate issuers
Expand each fund into its underlying issuers using the fund holdings available for the relevant date. Then combine repeated issuers across accounts and funds. If the same company appears in a brokerage account, a broad-market ETF, and an AI-themed fund, count its combined portfolio weight once in the issuer-level calculation—not once per appearance.
Preserve a separate record of fund-level exposure when holdings-based look-through data are unavailable. Do not silently treat a fund’s name, theme, or provider score as if it were a complete list of its underlying AI-related businesses. Mark the part of the portfolio that could not be looked through, so the reader can see the boundary of the estimate.

3. Classify each issuer using a defined framework
For every issuer, record four dimensions: disclosed or estimated AI-linked revenue; its place in the AI value chain; activity signals such as investment, partnerships, and launches; and potential exposure to disruption or automation. MSCI’s AI Exposure Intelligence framework uses the named datasets AI Revenue Exposure, AI Activity Monitor, and AI Disruption Potential to assess revenue, activity, and disruption-related dimensions across companies.
Use practical buckets to make the result readable. A direct-provider bucket can include companies whose products or services are specifically AI-related. An enabling-infrastructure bucket can include suppliers and infrastructure businesses supporting AI deployment. An adopter bucket can capture companies whose own operations may use AI. State how you assigned companies: the buckets are an analytical choice, not a universal accounting taxonomy.
4. Grade the evidence behind each classification
Give stronger weight to a company’s reported AI segment or revenue line. Next, consider a named business segment with a documented link to AI. Marketing language, a company’s ticker, or a general claim that it is an AI company is not enough to establish an AI-revenue percentage.

For every estimate, retain its source, publication date, and geographic scope where relevant. Distinguish a number disclosed by the company from a modeled estimate or a qualitative judgment. If the company does not separately report AI revenue, do not label a proxy or analyst estimate as reported revenue.
5. Calculate each issuer’s contribution
For a revenue-only measure, multiply each issuer’s consolidated portfolio weight by the selected share of its revenue attributed to AI. For example, if a holding represents 4% of the portfolio and 60% of its revenue is classified as AI-linked, its contribution is 2.4 percentage points: 0.04 × 0.60 = 0.024.
Add the issuer contributions to produce the portfolio estimate for that definition. Calculate direct providers, enabling businesses, and adopters separately before deciding whether to show a combined figure. If exposures are estimates, the resulting total is an estimate too; the arithmetic does not make an uncertain input precise.
6. Check concentration and overlap
List the largest issuer contributions and show repeated holdings across funds. Then check for shared dependencies, such as cloud services, chips, networking, data centers, power, and cooling. A portfolio can contain many securities and still rely on the same companies, infrastructure, or AI-spending cycle.

Look at both the company-level result and the fund-level paths that created it. Overlap can make a portfolio appear diversified by ticker count while several funds own the same large companies. A separate fund list also helps explain which investments are responsible for the exposure and where a change to one holding could affect several accounts.
7. Build distinct scenarios
At minimum, calculate a narrow case based on disclosed AI revenue, a broader value-chain case, and a risk case that includes potential disruption or automation. Do not add unlike measures together as though each were a revenue share. A company’s AI-related activity or disruption potential is not automatically a percentage of its sales.
When a company has no disclosed AI revenue, keep it out of the narrow disclosed-revenue total unless the calculation explicitly identifies a modeled estimate. It may still appear in a broader scenario, with the reason and evidence recorded. This makes the difference between scenarios informative rather than a hidden change in definitions.
8. Date and refresh the analysis
Record the holdings date and the dates of company disclosures, estimates, and provider classifications. Holdings, index constituents, modeled estimates, and provider categories change. Refresh after material portfolio changes or on a regular review schedule, and compare results only when the definitions and relevant dates are sufficiently aligned.
Which methods do investment-data providers use?
Provider methods can help organize an analysis, but they do not produce a single standardized figure that can be compared without context. The methods below measure different things, use different universes, and vary in how directly a result can be traced to company disclosures.
| Method or source | What it measures | Coverage or reported structure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSCI AI Exposure Intelligence | Rules-based classification across competitive impact, activity, and revenue | AI Disruption Potential, AI Activity Monitor, and AI Revenue Exposure datasets | Its dimensions should be read separately; activity or disruption is not the same as realized AI revenue. |
| MSCI AI Value Chain Indexes | AI opportunity across physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure, and applications | Ten components; exposure considers realized business-segment revenue and attention to emerging AI activity | A value-chain approach is broader than a narrow disclosed-revenue calculation. |
| MSCI Strategy Exposure methodology | Company revenue from business segments matched to a strategy | Thematic exposure is expressed as the percentage of company revenue from matched segments | The result depends on how business segments are matched to the strategy. |
| S&P Global Visible Alpha AI Monitor | Selected AI-exposed revenue lines, weighted relative to total company revenue | 69 publicly traded companies; classifications are refreshed as disclosures and market conditions change | S&P describes the lines as proxies, not exact AI-revenue quantifications, because disclosures are limited and AI and conventional services can be intertwined. |
| Morningstar fund AI Exposure score | Combined fund score based on analyst assessments of future AI revenue and how frequently AI managers hold each stock | Fund-level score | This is a provider score, not a universally standardized accounting measure. |
| ESMA cross-index analysis | Exposure of EU equity funds to companies common to multiple AI indices | 83 companies retained from 198 constituents across seven AI indices; holdings of 10,370 EU equity funds from January 2021 through June 2024 | The company set was defined by appearing in at least two of the seven indices; the result is tied to that rule and study period. |
ESMA reported that more than 50% of the market value held by the analyzed EU funds was concentrated in the largest companies, including six of the Magnificent Seven. That finding illustrates why overlap and issuer concentration matter, but it is not a measurement of every investor’s AI exposure: the fund universe, dates, and cross-index selection rule define what it says.
How should you choose between a revenue measure and a broader measure?
Choose a measure based on the question you want to answer. Revenue attribution is usually easier to audit when companies disclose relevant business lines, while a value-chain or disruption framework can capture indirect dependencies and possible risks that current revenue figures miss.

Use disclosed revenue for a conservative, auditable view
A disclosed-revenue case answers a narrow question: what share of the portfolio is weighted by company revenue lines that are explicitly tied to AI under the chosen definition? It is the clearest starting point when the evidence exists. Its limitation is that AI revenue is often not reported separately, and a narrow approach can miss enabling businesses or emerging activity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse value-chain analysis to map indirect dependencies
A value-chain view broadens the lens beyond companies selling AI applications. It can include physical and digital infrastructure and other businesses that support deployment. MSCI’s AI Value Chain Indexes organize exposure into physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure, and applications, with ten components. This can make a dependency map more useful, but it also introduces more judgment about which segments qualify and how emerging activity should count.
Use disruption analysis to examine risk, not just opportunity
AI may create opportunities for some businesses while changing the economics of others. A disruption or automation case therefore should not be presented as an AI-revenue figure or as a one-way measure of benefit. Keep it as a distinct risk lens and explain the classification basis for companies included in it.
Provider comparison should consider transparency, revenue specificity, coverage, look-through and overlap treatment, update frequency, geography, and access. In particular, ask whether a figure can be traced to a filing or stated methodology, whether it is a disclosed amount or a modeled proxy, and whether the universe includes direct vendors, infrastructure enablers, and adopters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can make an AI-exposure estimate misleading?
The largest source of error is often not multiplication but definition. Since there is no universal AI-exposure percentage, two estimates can differ because they use different company universes, dates, revenue definitions, and treatment of indirect enablers—not because one calculation is necessarily wrong.
- Counting fund labels as holdings evidence: A themed fund name does not show which issuers it owns or how large its underlying positions are. Use holdings data for look-through where available.
- Counting duplicate issuers multiple times: Consolidate repeated holdings across accounts and funds before calculating issuer contributions.
- Using a proxy as exact revenue: Selected revenue lines can be useful indicators, but S&P Global’s Visible Alpha AI Monitor cautions that its lines are proxies rather than exact AI-revenue quantifications.
- Mixing incompatible measures: Do not combine a revenue percentage, a qualitative activity label, and a disruption assessment into one precise-looking total.
- Ignoring stale holdings: A fund’s holdings file may not match the date of the portfolio you are measuring. Keep the holdings as-of date with the result and treat stale or interpolated holdings as a limitation.
- Confusing exposure with performance: A portfolio exposure estimate describes classified business connections and weights; it does not forecast returns or prove how a security will respond to future AI developments.
- Reporting a total without its evidence trail: Preserve the source, date, geography, and confidence level behind issuer classifications so another person can understand or revise the estimate.
What should a useful AI-exposure report include?
A concise report can still be transparent. Put the method and date beside the headline, then show enough detail to let a reader see which assumptions and holdings drive the result.
- The accounts, assets, and portfolio denominator included in the calculation.
- Holdings and classifications as-of dates, including the relevant fund share classes.
- The definition used for each scenario: disclosed revenue, broader value chain, or disruption and automation risk.
- Issuer-level weights and AI-exposure assumptions, with reported figures distinguished from modeled estimates and qualitative classifications.
- Separate direct-provider, enabling-infrastructure, and adopter contributions where those categories are used.
- The largest issuer contributions, repeated holdings across funds, and shared infrastructure dependencies.
- Holdings that could not be looked through and any material uncertainty caused by stale or interpolated data.
- The source and publication date for each classification, plus the rules used to include or exclude a business segment.
For example, a report could state that its narrow case uses disclosed AI-linked revenue only, while a separate value-chain case includes specified infrastructure categories. It should then show the holdings date, the largest issuer contributions, and which values are modeled. That is more useful than presenting a single percentage without showing what it counts.

How often should you update the result?
Update when the portfolio changes materially and at a regular review interval that fits how often you review your investments. The result can change because of your trades, fund rebalancing, new or revised company disclosures, changing estimates, or updates to provider classifications and index constituents.
Keep prior versions rather than overwriting them. A dated history helps distinguish a change in your holdings from a change in classification method or company disclosure. When comparing two dates, use the same definition and, where possible, aligned holdings and classification dates; otherwise, describe the differences that prevent a like-for-like comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI-exposure percentage tell me how much my portfolio will gain or lose?
No. It is a classification-weighted estimate of business exposure, not a forecast of investment performance. Share prices can respond to many factors beyond the AI-related business activity included in the calculation.
Why might my portfolio’s AI score differ from a fund provider’s score?
A provider may use its own company universe, analyst judgments, revenue estimates, or stock-holding frequency, while your calculation may use a different definition and holdings date. Compare the underlying methodology and scope before interpreting the difference as a disagreement about the same measure.
Can I measure AI exposure if companies do not report AI revenue separately?
You can build a broader estimate using documented business segments, selected revenue proxies, or activity evidence, but label each as modeled or qualitative rather than disclosed AI revenue. Keep those estimates outside a narrow disclosed-revenue total.
Does owning an AI-themed ETF guarantee high exposure to AI companies?
No. A fund’s label is not a substitute for examining its holdings, weights, share class, and holdings date. Look through the fund where data are available, then consolidate its issuers with the rest of your portfolio.
