Start by identifying what kind of payment you are looking at. A recurring card payment charges a debit or credit card under an arrangement with a merchant; a direct debit and a standing order draw from your bank account instead. In your app, open the relevant card’s recent transactions, inspect the merchant details, and look for a subscription, recurring-payment or card-control option. Bank labels and capabilities differ, so the same control may not exist in every app.
If you need the charge stopped, use the in-app control when it is clearly available, or contact the card issuer through the official app, the number on the card or a statement. Separately cancel the subscription or contract with the merchant, save both confirmations and check later statements. Stopping a card payment does not automatically end the underlying agreement.

Many failed cancellation attempts begin with the wrong payment type. Find the transaction in your banking app and determine whether the money is leaving a card or your bank account.
Recurring card payment
A recurring card payment is a merchant charge to a debit or credit card under an arrangement you agreed to. In the UK, this is commonly called a continuous payment authority. The merchant stores or otherwise uses the card details to take payments at agreed intervals, which may be fixed or variable.

Because the card is the funding instrument, the relevant controls—if your issuer provides them—are usually in the card section, the card’s transaction history or a subscription-management screen.
Direct debit
A direct debit is an instruction on your bank account that allows a business to collect funds from that account. It is not the same as a recurring card payment, even if both appear monthly and have the same merchant name. Look in the account’s direct-debit or mandates area rather than in card controls.
Standing order
A standing order is a bank-account instruction that sends a payment on a schedule you set with your bank. It is normally managed from the account’s payments or scheduled-transfers area. A card subscription screen will not control it.

Why the distinction matters
Each payment type has a different cancellation route and different legal treatment. Before selecting “stop,” write down the merchant name, date, amount, currency, the last four digits of the card if shown, and whether the transaction is pending or completed. If the app shows an account debit rather than a card transaction, switch to the account-payment controls.
Use your app to locate a recurring card payment
- Open the card that was charged. If you have several cards, check the card named in the transaction alert or statement.
- Open recent transactions. Select the merchant entry and expand the details. Confirm the descriptor, transaction date, amount, currency and any billing or installment information.
- Look for a recurring-payment route. Depending on the issuer, the route may be a button on the transaction, a “subscription” or “recurring payments” list, or a card-controls menu.
- Check the merchant record. Review whether the app identifies a stored-card relationship, the next scheduled payment, or a pause/stop action. Do not approve a block until the merchant and card match the agreement you intend to change.
- Save the screen. Take a screenshot or download the transaction details before changing anything. Include the date and the app’s displayed status.
Visa’s issuer guidance describes two possible entry points: starting from a recent transaction or opening a dedicated subscription-payment area. Those are implementation options, not a promise that every bank offers either route. Visa also describes issuer capabilities to show participating stored-card merchants and to let a cardholder pause or stop eligible recurring and installment payments.

What a participating-merchant list can and cannot show
Visa’s documented service refers to merchants with stored-card activity in the previous 13 months. That 13-month window is a scope of the Visa service, not a universal limit imposed by every bank app. A merchant may be absent because the issuer has not implemented the feature, the merchant is not participating, the card has no qualifying history, or the payment is not a stored-card recurring transaction.
Visa’s issuer experience guidance also notes that its APIs do not provide notifications. An app may therefore display a control without automatically alerting you when a merchant charges the card. Continue checking statements and the merchant’s own notices.

| App capability | What it may let you do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Recent-transaction entry | Open a merchant record directly from a card payment | That the selected transaction belongs to the subscription you intend to change |
| Dedicated recurring-payment list | See participating stored-card merchants in one place | That the list is not presented as every merchant or every payment |
| Pause | Temporarily prevent eligible recurring or installment payments | When the pause starts, when it ends and how it is shown in the app |
| Stop | Block eligible future recurring or installment payments through the issuer’s control | Whether the app gives a confirmation or reference number |
| Status or history | Show that a requested action was submitted or completed | Whether the status is a request, a completed block or an expiry |
A pause is not the same as a permanent stop, and either action may affect only payments that meet the issuer’s eligibility rules. Read the confirmation screen, note the effective date and keep the reference or screenshot. If the app does not explain the scope, ask the issuer before relying on the control.
Stop a charge in the app when the option is available
- Open the transaction or recurring-payment record. Confirm the merchant, card and amount.
- Choose “pause” or “stop” only after reading the terms. Check whether the action applies to future payments, a particular installment plan or a single transaction.
- Confirm the requested date. A control may take effect immediately or from a future billing date. The app should state the timing; if it does not, treat the action as unconfirmed.
- Complete any authentication. Use the app’s normal passcode, biometric check or one-time code. Never disclose an authentication code to a caller claiming to be the bank.
- Save the confirmation. Record the time, reference number and displayed status. Retain the original transaction details as well.
- Contact the merchant separately. If you want the subscription or contract to end, send the cancellation request to the business even after an app stop.
If a payment is already pending, an in-app recurring-payment control may not reverse that transaction. The confirmation wording and the issuer’s support team are the authoritative sources for what the action covers.
When the app has no control—or you need certainty
Use an official issuer channel: secure in-app messaging, the telephone number printed on the card, or a number shown on a statement. Tell the issuer that you are asking to stop a recurring card payment, identify the merchant and card, and specify the next expected payment if known.

UK rule for recurring card payments
The Financial Conduct Authority’s consumer guidance, updated 23 June 2025, says: “Your card issuer can’t insist that you contact the business before stopping the payment.” In the UK, the issuer must stop the payment when you ask. The FCA says the issuer or business should receive the request by the end of the business day before the next payment is due if you want to avoid that charge.

Keep the date and time, the channel used, the merchant descriptor, the expected payment date and any confirmation message. If a charge is taken after a valid cancellation request, contact the issuer promptly and provide that evidence. The FCA treats a payment taken after cancellation as unauthorised in this context.
United States: account debits are a different rule set
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance on automatic payments from a US bank account tells consumers to revoke authorization with the company and contact their bank or credit union. It also stresses that stopping an automatic payment does not itself cancel a service contract or a loan obligation.
That guidance concerns bank-account debits; it is not a universal rule for card-on-file payments. The CFPB separately distinguishes company-initiated account debits from recurring bill-pay sent by the bank. Its 10-day notice figure applies to certain changes in varying US account debits, not to recurring card-payment notifications. Do not use that figure as a deadline for a card subscription.
Cancel the merchant agreement as a separate task
Stopping the payment channel and ending the commercial relationship are different actions. A payment block can prevent a card charge while the merchant still considers the subscription, service term or balance active. The FCA expressly warns that cancelling a recurring card payment does not necessarily end your contract with the business.

- Use the merchant’s documented cancellation route. This may be an account setting, a written request, a support form or another method specified in the agreement.
- State exactly what you are cancelling. Include your name, account or order reference, the merchant descriptor, the date you want service to end and the last four card digits only if the merchant requests them. Do not send a full card number by ordinary email.
- Ask for written confirmation. Request confirmation of the effective cancellation date and whether any final amount remains due under the contract.
- Keep the evidence together. Save the request, the merchant’s reply, terms shown at sign-up, invoices and the issuer’s stop confirmation.
If the merchant says a notice period or final invoice applies, review the contract rather than assuming the card stop erases that obligation. Dispute or repayment rights can depend on the country, card type, transaction status and the facts of the case.
Check what happens after cancellation
Review the next statements for the card and, where relevant, the bank account. Check the merchant descriptor rather than relying only on the amount: a business may bill under a different trading name or use a small verification charge before a full payment.
- Compare the posting date and amount with the cancellation’s effective date.
- Check whether the entry is a new charge, a reversal, a refund or an installment already authorized under the agreement.
- If a charge appears after the issuer confirmed a stop, contact the issuer immediately and provide the confirmation reference and merchant-cancellation evidence.
- Continue monitoring until the billing cycle covered by the agreement has passed.
Do not assume that silence from the app means the action failed or succeeded. Look for a status, ask the issuer for confirmation and use statements as the final check that no further charge posted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why replacing the card is not a dependable fix
A new card number may not end recurring billing. The FCA warns that recurring payments may continue after a card is replaced, although this does not happen in every case. Card networks and issuers can sometimes update stored-card details for participating merchants. If you replace a card, still tell the issuer which recurring payment you want stopped and cancel the service with the merchant.

Replacement can also disrupt subscriptions you do want to keep. Before replacing a card solely to escape a charge, ask the issuer what will happen to recurring transactions and use the direct stop or cancellation process instead.

Common situations and the right next move
The merchant is not visible in the subscription list
Open the underlying card transaction and inspect its descriptor. If it is a card payment but no recurring control appears, the issuer may not support the feature, the merchant may not participate, or the transaction may fall outside the service’s displayed history. Contact the issuer rather than assuming the charge cannot be stopped.
The same company appears as both a card payment and a direct debit
Cancel each payment instruction separately. A card stop does not cancel a direct debit, and a direct-debit cancellation does not stop a card-on-file charge. Use the account’s direct-debit controls for the bank-account instruction and the card issuer or card controls for the card payment.
You want to pause, not cancel
Use pause only when the app explains its duration and restart behavior. Record the resume date and set your own reminder. If the service contract continues during the pause, ask the merchant whether fees or obligations continue.
You cannot identify the merchant
Do not stop an unrelated payment merely because the amount looks familiar. Compare the descriptor, date and card, then ask the issuer for additional transaction details through an authenticated channel. If you suspect fraud, use the issuer’s fraud-reporting route immediately.
The app confirms a stop but another charge appears
Capture the new transaction and the earlier confirmation, then contact the issuer. Explain that the charge posted after the stop request and provide the exact dates. Also send the merchant your cancellation evidence if the contract remains open.
Keep a simple cancellation record
A short record prevents disputes about what was requested and when. For each recurring payment, retain:
- Merchant name and transaction descriptor
- Card or account used, identified by the last four digits only
- Typical amount, billing interval and next expected date
- Date and time of the app action or issuer call
- Issuer confirmation number or secure-message transcript
- Merchant cancellation request and written response
- Dates of later statement checks
Store screenshots and PDFs somewhere you can retrieve them after the app’s message history expires. Never include a full card number, security code or one-time authentication code in your notes or in an email to a merchant.
A jurisdiction-aware decision path
| Situation | Practical route | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| UK recurring card payment | Ask the issuer to stop it; use the app or official issuer channel, then cancel with the merchant | The issuer cannot insist that you contact the business first; request by the end of the business day before the next payment is due to avoid that charge |
| US automatic debit from a bank account | Revoke authorization with the company and contact the bank or credit union | Stopping the debit does not cancel the service contract or loan obligation |
| US recurring card-on-file payment | Check the issuer’s card controls and contact the issuer and merchant | Bank-account automatic-payment guidance does not establish a universal card-payment rule |
| Direct debit or standing order | Use the bank-account mandate or scheduled-payment controls | Card subscription controls do not manage these instructions |
App design is an issuer choice. Visa’s materials describe routes and capabilities that an issuer may implement, including a recent-transaction entry point, a dedicated list and pause or stop functions for eligible payments. They should be treated as examples of possible controls, not a standard screen layout.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Identify whether the charge is a card payment, direct debit or standing order.
- Record the merchant, amount, date, card and next expected payment.
- Check the card transaction and any recurring-payment or subscription area.
- Read whether the action is pause or stop, and note its effective date.
- Save the issuer’s confirmation or reference.
- Cancel the merchant contract separately and save its confirmation.
- Review later statements and report any post-cancellation charge promptly.
- Do not rely on card replacement alone.
