The safest way to support a parent abroad is to manage each transfer as a complete delivery, not as a headline fee. Start with the exact amount your parent needs in local currency and the date it must be available. Then compare live quotes for the same funding and payout methods, including the exchange-rate markup, stated fees and any intermediary or receiving-bank deductions. Finally, confirm that your parent can access the chosen account, wallet or cash-pickup point, verify the request through a trusted channel and keep a consistent record for the next payment.
Costs, delivery times and consumer protections depend on the countries, currencies, amount and payment methods involved. Global averages can provide context, but only a current quote for your corridor tells you what your parent will actually receive.

1. Define the support your parent must receive
Set a local-currency target and deadline
Write the requirement in the parent’s currency, not only in your own. Separate regular living costs from care expenses such as medicines, clinic visits, home help or transportation. Note the date funds must be usable: a transfer that arrives after a prescription or care appointment is effectively late even if the provider met its stated delivery window.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor recurring support, decide whether the target is a fixed local-currency amount or a fixed amount in your currency. A fixed local amount gives your parent a predictable budget but means your sending amount may change as exchange rates move. A fixed sending amount makes your outlay predictable but can leave the parent with less in a weak-rate month. Record which objective you are using before comparing services.

Confirm how the parent will receive and use the money
Ask whether the parent needs funds in a bank account, a mobile wallet or as cash. The practical choice depends on what is available in the receiving country and what the parent can actually use. A wallet that cannot be funded or cashed out locally is not a workable payout method, and a cash service is unsuitable if the parent cannot safely reach an approved pickup location.
- Bank account: confirm the account accepts the currency or conversion, the account holder’s name and number, and any minimum balance or identity requirements.
- Mobile wallet: confirm that the parent’s phone number and wallet are supported for inbound transfers, that the wallet is verified and that there is a convenient way to spend or withdraw the balance.
- Cash pickup: check the exact agent location, opening hours, identification documents accepted and whether the parent can travel there safely.
2. Compare the amount received, not just the transfer fee
The components of a cross-border transfer cost
Compare the parent’s expected payout with your total outlay. A useful worksheet has these fields:
| Item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Amount you pay | The debit from your card, bank account or cash | This is your real budget impact. |
| Exchange rate | The quoted rate for the exact currency pair and time | A rate below the market reference can contain the provider’s margin. |
| Rate markup | Whether the provider discloses a margin or spread | A “zero-fee” transfer can still be expensive through the rate. |
| Transfer fee | Fixed and percentage charges shown before confirmation | Funding method, amount and speed can change the fee. |
| Intermediary or receiving-bank charges | Known deductions and any stated uncertainty | These can reduce the amount credited after the provider sends the money. |
| Expected recipient amount | The amount the parent should receive in local currency | This is the figure to compare across providers. |
| Delivery estimate | Stated date or time range and conditions | Urgent care payments may justify a different method. |
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) says good pre-transaction information should show the amount sent, exchange rate, any markup, fixed and variable fees, total fees and the amount the recipient receives. It also says firms should explain possible intermediary or recipient-bank charges where they apply. The FCA warns, “Some firms emphasise the absence of a fixed fee which can create the misleading impression that no costs apply to the remittance.” This is UK guidance, not a universal rule, but it is a useful standard for reading any quote.

These are global averages for Q3 2025, not quotes for your family’s corridor and not a promise that a method will be cheapest for a particular transfer. The World Bank comparison service covers 367 country corridors from 48 sending countries to 105 receiving countries; its listed last update is August 18, 2025. Exchange rates, fees and availability can change, so use current provider quotes for the exact amount, funding method and payout method.
3. Use a repeatable quote-comparison process
Run the same process for every provider currently available on your corridor. Comparing different amounts or payout methods produces a misleading result.
- Write the test case. Record the sending amount, destination currency, desired arrival date and payout channel. If the parent needs a fixed local amount, enter that target where the service allows it; otherwise enter the same sending amount for each quote.
- Enter identical details. Select the same funding source, delivery speed and recipient location. A card-funded quote and a bank-funded quote are different products and should be labelled separately.
- Capture the full price. Save the amount charged, fixed fee, variable fee, exchange rate, disclosed markup and total expected recipient amount. Note whether the quote is guaranteed for a limited period.
- Check deductions. Read the disclosures for intermediary banks, agent fees, recipient-bank charges or foreign taxes. If the service cannot state the deduction, record it as an uncertainty rather than assuming the parent receives the headline amount.
- Check timing and conditions. Record the estimated delivery and what could delay it, such as weekends, holidays, verification or a bank’s processing window.
- Verify access before sending. Confirm that the parent’s account, wallet or pickup point is supported and that the parent has the required identification, phone access or account status.
- Compare the result. Rank quotes by the parent’s expected amount after known charges, then consider timing, reliability, access and protections. The lowest visible fee is not automatically the lowest total cost.
- Save the quote and receipt. Keep a screenshot or downloaded confirmation showing the rate, fees, recipient amount, transaction reference and support route.
4. Choose a payout channel your parent can use
Bank-account payout
Bank delivery can be convenient for rent, utilities and large care bills, but verify every account detail independently. Confirm the account holder’s full name, account number or international identifier where applicable, bank name and branch or routing information. Ask the bank whether incoming foreign payments are accepted, which currency will be credited and whether it deducts an incoming fee. A provider’s “recipient gets” figure may not include a receiving-bank deduction if the bank charges separately.
Mobile-wallet payout
A wallet can provide fast access when the parent uses a supported phone and local merchants or agents accept the balance. Check identity verification, wallet limits, expiry or inactivity rules, cash-out fees, phone-number ownership and what happens if the phone or SIM is lost. Confirm that the provider supports inbound transfers to that wallet in the parent’s country, not merely wallet transfers in another direction.

Cash pickup
Cash can help when the parent has no usable account, but it adds travel, safety and identification concerns. Confirm the exact pickup network and location, opening hours, required identity document and whether the recipient name must match the document exactly. Do not send cash pickup funds based only on a message containing a new location or altered spelling; verify the change with your parent through a known channel.
5. Check authorization, safeguarding and complaint rights
A transfer provider may be a bank, a licensed payment institution, an electronic-money firm or another regulated entity. Regulation and customer protections vary by the sender’s and recipient’s jurisdictions. Check the provider’s legal entity, authorization status, safeguarding explanation, fraud process and complaint route before making a large or recurring payment.
What UK guidance means
The FCA’s guidance on payment service providers explains that money held with non-bank payment service providers is not protected by the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Safeguarding arrangements are not the same as bank-deposit protection. If you send from or to the UK, read what protection applies to the specific legal entity and how funds are treated if it fails; do not assume that every wallet or payment account has deposit insurance.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What US senders should look for
For covered US consumer remittance transfers, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance says the sender should receive information about fees and taxes, the applicable exchange rate, certain fees imposed by agents abroad or other institutions, the expected amount delivered and a statement when other foreign fees or taxes may reduce the amount. Regulation E’s detailed disclosure rule uses the concepts “Total to Recipient” and covered third-party fees for specified transfers. Coverage has conditions and exceptions, and other third-party charges can still reduce what arrives. Treat this as a US-specific example of disclosure rights, not a guarantee for every international transfer.

Questions to ask any provider
- Which regulated entity is taking my funds, and in which country?
- How are customer funds safeguarded while a transfer is pending?
- What happens if the transfer is delayed, rejected or sent to the wrong details?
- How do I report fraud or an unauthorized transfer, and what information must I provide?
- Is there a formal complaint process and an independent escalation body?
6. Protect the transfer from scams and mistakes
Urgency is a warning sign when a request is unusual, changes an established payment routine or asks you to bypass normal verification. The FCA’s money-transfer scam guidance describes advance-fee and foreign-money-transfer patterns. A caller or message may claim that a release fee, tax, customs payment or emergency charge must be sent before money can be received.
- Pause an unexpected request, even if it appears to come from your parent.
- Call the parent using a number already saved in your contacts or another trusted channel; do not rely on the number or link in the new message.
- Ask a simple question that a scammer with copied messages may not know, and confirm the exact amount, currency, purpose and payout method.
- Check recipient details independently before pressing send. Read the final name, account, wallet number or pickup instruction character by character.
- Never pay an advance fee to unlock a supposed inheritance, prize, loan or transfer unless you have independently verified the transaction with the legitimate institution.
- Use the provider’s official app, website or telephone number, and keep the transaction reference.
If you suspect fraud after sending, contact the provider immediately and ask whether the transfer can be stopped or recalled. Contact your bank or card issuer if its funding method may be involved, preserve messages and receipts, and report the incident to the relevant authorities in the countries involved.
7. Build a monthly support routine
Recurring transfers become easier to audit when every payment is recorded in the same format. This is practical organization, not a claim that a regulator requires a particular recordkeeping system.
| Field | Entry to keep |
|---|---|
| Date and reference | Send date, transaction ID and provider |
| Purpose | Living costs, medicine, care visit or another agreed category |
| Funding | Bank account, card or other source |
| Quoted rate | Rate shown at confirmation and whether a markup was disclosed |
| Fees | Transfer fee, funding fee and any stated third-party charge |
| Recipient amount | Expected local-currency amount and, later, the amount actually available |
| Timing | Quoted delivery, actual availability and any delay reason |
| Access issue | Failed login, pickup problem, bank deduction or other obstacle |
Compare the new quote with the previous month’s quote for the same route. Recheck periodically because exchange rates and provider pricing are volatile; a route that was competitive last month may not be competitive now. If the parent’s needs change, rerun the comparison rather than automatically increasing a standing instruction.

8. Diagnose common transfer problems
The parent received less than the quote
Compare the receipt with the original quote and ask the receiving bank or wallet for its transaction details. Look for an intermediary-bank deduction, receiving fee, foreign tax or a quote that was only an estimate. Ask the provider to explain each difference in writing and save the response with your records.
The transfer is pending beyond the estimate
Check whether the provider requested identity information, whether a weekend or holiday intervened and whether the recipient account is able to accept the currency. Use the transaction reference when contacting support. Do not send a second transfer merely because the first appears delayed; first establish whether both could settle and create a duplicate payment.
The recipient details were wrong
Contact the provider immediately. Some transfers can be cancelled before payout, while others cannot be reversed once credited or collected. Ask what recall process applies, provide the correct details through the provider’s secure channel and document every case number.
The parent cannot collect cash or access the wallet
Confirm the identification, phone number, account status and location requirements. If the issue cannot be fixed quickly, ask whether the provider can return the funds or change the payout method. Do not disclose one-time codes or account passwords to a person claiming to be support.
