Start by measuring the stock as a percentage of your entire investable portfolio, then choose a target allocation and move toward it deliberately. Count shares in every brokerage and retirement account, employer stock and awards, and the same company’s weight inside mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs). You can reduce exposure by redirecting new contributions, selling part of the position, rebalancing other assets, or—when you already intend to give to charity—investigating a gift of eligible appreciated shares. The right pace depends on taxes, trading restrictions, liquidity, goals, time horizon and risk tolerance; there is no universal percentage that makes a portfolio “too concentrated.”

What concentration risk means

Concentration risk is the possibility that one company, issuer, sector or other correlated group drives an outsized share of your portfolio’s gains and losses. If a single company suffers an accounting problem, product failure, lawsuit, cyberattack, regulatory action or a permanent change in its industry, a concentrated investor feels that event far more than an investor with broadly spread holdings.

Investor.gov explains the basic trade-off: when you buy one company, your financial result depends exclusively on that stock’s performance. Diversification gives other holdings a chance to offset a loss in one investment. Read the SEC’s overview of the concept at Investor.gov’s Introduction to Investing.

Concentration is about economic exposure, not the number of accounts in which the shares sit. A stock split between two brokers is still one position. Conversely, a portfolio can be concentrated without owning many shares directly if several funds hold the same issuer or if most holdings rise and fall with the same sector. FINRA identifies intentional overweights, a position that has grown faster than the rest of the portfolio, employer shares, correlated investments and illiquid assets as common routes into concentration.

Measure your real exposure before changing anything

Use current market values rather than share counts. Your first objective is a one-page inventory that shows where the risk comes from and how quickly each holding could be changed.

Build an account-by-account inventory

  1. List every account. Include taxable brokerage accounts, individual retirement accounts, workplace retirement plans, health savings accounts and any other account containing investments.
  2. Record the direct position. For each account, enter the number of shares and current market value of the company stock. Include restricted stock units (RSUs), employee stock purchase plan shares, vested options and shares awaiting settlement where applicable.
  3. Add employer-related exposure. Your salary, bonus, job security and retirement match may all depend on the same employer. Record unvested awards and future vesting dates separately because they are potential, rather than currently liquid, exposure.
  4. Look through funds. Obtain each fund’s latest holdings from its prospectus or holdings file. Note the percentage in your company, its sector and other major positions that may respond to the same economic forces.
  5. Calculate the denominator. Add the market value of investable assets, not just the balance of one brokerage account. Decide whether to show a second calculation that includes cash reserves or other liquid assets so you can see how the answer changes.

For the direct position, use stock value ÷ total investable assets × 100. Run a separate calculation for sector exposure and for employer-linked wealth. FINRA recommends examining fund holdings for overlap and considering how readily each investment can be sold; its guidance is available at FINRA’s concentration-risk overview.

Capture indirect and correlated holdings

Exposure source What to record Why it matters
Direct shares Market value, account, cost basis and holding period A price move changes your portfolio immediately; basis and holding period affect the tax result of a sale.
Employer equity Vested and unvested awards, vesting dates, trading windows and blackout periods Your investment and employment may be exposed to the same company at once.
Broad-market funds Issuer weight and the date of the holdings file A large company can appear in several funds, creating more exposure than the labels suggest.
Sector or thematic funds Top holdings, sector weight and geographic scope A narrowly focused fund may behave much like a single-stock position.
Other correlated securities Suppliers, customers, competitors or companies driven by the same commodity, rate or regulation Separate tickers do not guarantee separate risks.
Illiquid assets Private shares, restricted stock, real estate interests and sale limitations An exposure you cannot sell promptly can be more damaging during a crisis.

Update the inventory after a large price move, a vesting or exercise event, a contribution, a job change or a major purchase. Performance drift can turn a once-modest allocation into the dominant risk without any new buying.

Choose a target allocation without relying on a magic percentage

Regulators do not establish one stock-weight limit that fits every investor. A target should reflect what the money is for, when you need it and how much loss you can tolerate while still following your plan.

Match the target to your goal and time horizon

  • Near-term spending: Money needed for tuition, a home purchase or another dated obligation has little time to recover from a company-specific loss. A concentrated position is especially consequential for this bucket.
  • Long-term retirement assets: A long horizon can allow more volatility, but it does not remove the possibility that one company fails or that your job and shares decline together. Separate long-term growth money from money that must remain dependable.
  • Legacy or charitable goals: A position intended for heirs or a future gift still carries market and tax risk while you hold it. Document the purpose and the date by which you expect to use it.

Test your ability to live with a loss

Ask how you would respond if the stock fell sharply while your employer also froze hiring or reduced bonuses. A target is unsuitable if a plausible loss would force you to sell at the worst time, abandon a goal or borrow to meet expenses. Risk tolerance is your emotional capacity for volatility; risk capacity is the financial ability to absorb it. Use the more conservative constraint when they conflict.

Write a target and a rebalancing band

Record a desired weight and a range that triggers review. For example, you might specify “target: X; review if the position rises above Y or falls below Z,” where X, Y and Z are your own numbers based on your plan. The point is to make the decision before a dramatic price move, not to adopt an unsupported industry cutoff. Revisit the target when your job, family, liabilities or time horizon changes.

The SEC’s educational guide describes asset allocation, diversification and rebalancing at Investor.gov’s Asset Allocation and Diversification page. It emphasizes that an allocation should be connected to goals, time horizon and tolerance for risk.

Ways to reduce a single-stock position

Most investors combine methods. Compare the trade-offs before choosing a pace.

Method How it changes exposure Main advantages Key costs, limits or risks
Redirect new money Send future payroll deferrals, automatic deposits and dividends to underweighted assets instead of the stock. Can lower the stock’s portfolio share without an immediate sale or capital-gains event. If the position is very large, dilution may take years; the stock can still fall while you wait.
Sell part and rebalance Sell enough shares to move toward the target and buy diversified assets or other underweights. Reduces company-specific exposure promptly and gives you control over the new allocation. Realizes gains or losses, incurs any trading costs and may be restricted by a vesting schedule, blackout or plan rule.
Rebalance other assets Use interest, dividends, maturing bonds or sales of correlated holdings to fund areas that are underweight. May reduce overlap without selling the concentrated shares immediately. It can leave the direct stock risk intact and may create taxes or fees elsewhere.
Donate appreciated shares Transfer eligible shares to a qualified charity when charitable giving is already part of your plan. Can meet a giving goal while removing the donated shares from your portfolio. Eligibility, valuation, holding-period and deduction rules depend on the facts; a gift is not automatically tax-free or suitable for every donor.
Use a diversified fund carefully Invest proceeds or new contributions in a broad fund whose holdings and costs fit your allocation. Provides many securities in one purchase and can simplify maintenance. A fund can be narrow, expensive or heavily invested in the same company; several funds can overlap.

The SEC’s rebalancing guide lists selling overweight holdings, buying underweighted holdings and directing ongoing contributions toward underweighted categories as possible approaches. It also says to weigh transaction fees and tax consequences; see the SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing.

Plan the tax and trading details before selling

Map your cost basis and holding periods

For each tax lot, record purchase price, acquisition date, reinvested dividends and any adjustments. A sale can create a capital gain or loss, and the tax treatment can differ according to the holding period and your jurisdiction. Selling only the highest-basis lots may reduce the current gain but can leave the portfolio more concentrated than intended; selling lower-basis lots may move you to safety faster while creating a larger taxable gain. Ask your tax professional how the rules apply to your circumstances.

Do not assume that an unrealized gain is harmless. A low-basis position can become even more dominant if its price rises, and waiting for a particular price may turn a risk-management decision into an unplanned market-timing bet. Conversely, do not sell blindly before checking whether a loss sale interacts with other purchases under applicable wash-sale rules.

Check employer and plan restrictions

Workplace plans can impose trading windows, blackout periods, settlement delays or rules on company stock in a retirement account. Equity awards may have tax withholding at vesting, exercise deadlines or expiration dates. An employee with material nonpublic information may face additional legal restrictions. Confirm the applicable plan documents and compliance contact before placing an order.

Estimate transaction costs and liquidity

Most listed shares can be sold quickly, but liquidity is not identical across securities or trading hours. Check the bid-ask spread, commissions if any, fund trading costs and redemption fees. A market order prioritizes execution but not price; a limit order controls the minimum acceptable price but may not execute. Large orders can move a thinly traded market. Your broker can explain order types, while a qualified adviser can help evaluate an orderly schedule.

Use diversified funds without assuming the label is enough

Diversification is a process of examining what you own, not a promise created by the word “fund.” A broad fund may hold hundreds or thousands of companies, yet the same issuer can appear in multiple funds. A sector, thematic, country or industry fund may contain many tickers but still be driven by one economic factor. Investor.gov discusses these limits at Asset Allocation and Diversification.

Read the holdings and prospectus

  • Check the top-10 holdings and the percentage represented by each.
  • Search for your concentrated company and add its weight across all funds and direct accounts.
  • Compare sector, industry and geographic exposures; two funds with different names may own the same companies.
  • Review the expense ratio, turnover, trading costs, redemption rules and any concentration policy.
  • Note the date of the holdings file. Portfolio composition changes, so a historical snapshot is not a permanent guarantee.

A fund that owns the stock you are trying to reduce may still be useful if its overall role fits your allocation, but count that indirect exposure honestly. A broad fund is not a reason to ignore the issuer’s weight.

Handle employer stock and compensation as one risk

Employer shares deserve separate attention because your paycheck and your portfolio can fail together. If the company weakens, the share price may fall at the same time that layoffs, bonus cuts or reduced future grants affect your income. Include unvested awards in a forward-looking exposure schedule, even though they are not yet liquid assets.

Create a vesting-and-sale routine

  1. List each award’s vesting date, number of shares, withholding method and expiration or exercise deadline.
  2. Decide in advance whether newly vested shares will be sold, retained up to a written target or used for a specific goal.
  3. Coordinate sales with trading windows and any prearranged plan permitted by your employer.
  4. Direct the proceeds to the asset classes that are underweight rather than allowing cash to accumulate without a purpose.

A routine can reduce the influence of headlines and prevent an automatic decision to hold every share simply because it came from compensation. It should still be reviewed when your tax bracket, job status, financial goals or company outlook changes.

Do not use complex single-stock products as a diversification shortcut

Leveraged and inverse single-stock exchange-traded products continue to reference one company. They can amplify gains and losses or seek the opposite of the stock’s daily return; they do not spread your risk across companies. The SEC staff statement warns that results over periods longer than one day can differ significantly from the intended daily exposure because of compounding and the product’s structure. Read it at the SEC statement on single-stock leveraged and inverse ETFs.

These products may involve higher volatility, path dependence, financing or borrowing exposure and monitoring requirements. Using an inverse product to “hedge” a concentrated holding can create a new timing problem: the hedge may not match the stock’s movement over the period you need, and losses can occur on both sides. Treat such instruments as specialized tools requiring a documented objective and a clear exit rule, not as a general-purpose concentration solution.

A practical rebalancing process

Step 1: Set the baseline

Save the date, market values, cost basis, fund holdings and the formula used for your percentage. Keep direct stock exposure, total employer-linked exposure and sector exposure on separate lines.

Step 2: Define the destination

Write the target allocation for the stock and the broader categories that will replace it. Include cash needs, emergency reserves and debt obligations in your planning even if they are outside the investable-asset denominator.

Step 3: Choose a pace

Pick an immediate, staged or contribution-led approach based on tax cost, restrictions, liquidity and the consequences of a further price decline. A staged plan should specify dates or events and the amount to review each time; it should not be an open-ended promise to “sell later.”

Step 4: Execute in the right account

Where possible, use tax-advantaged accounts for transactions that do not create current capital gains, while recognizing that plan menus and rules differ. In taxable accounts, select lots deliberately and retain confirmations. For employer plans, follow the plan’s process rather than assuming a normal brokerage order is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Redirect future flows

Change payroll elections, automatic investments and dividend instructions so that new money supports the target. Otherwise, fresh contributions can rebuild the concentration you just reduced.

Step 6: Verify the result

After trades settle, recalculate direct, indirect and sector exposure. Confirm that the intended funds were purchased, that cash was not left idle unintentionally and that no account restriction prevented execution.

Monitor drift and recognize warning signs

Set a review schedule—such as after each vesting event and at a regular portfolio review—plus event-driven checks after unusually large price moves, a job change, a merger, a fund-reconstitution notice or a new financial goal. Use the same denominator and definitions each time so percentages remain comparable.

  • Price drift: The stock rises faster than the portfolio, increasing its weight without a purchase.
  • Contribution drift: Automatic deposits continue buying the stock or a fund that already owns it heavily.
  • Employment drift: A promotion, new grant or bonus increases dependence on the same employer.
  • Fund drift: An index change, merger or sector rally changes the issuer’s indirect weight.
  • Liquidity drift: A restriction, lock-up or trading suspension makes an apparently manageable position difficult to reduce.

Document what would trigger a review and who has authority to act. A written rule helps distinguish a deliberate allocation from an accidental one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a professional review is worthwhile

Consider coordinated financial and tax advice before acting if the position has a very low basis, represents a substantial share of your wealth, includes options or restricted awards, is subject to employer restrictions, or is tied to a planned charitable gift. An adviser can model staged sales and cash-flow needs; a tax professional can evaluate basis, holding periods, estimated payments and the interaction of gains and losses. Neither professional can remove market risk, and you remain responsible for understanding the plan and costs.

Charitable gifts need fact-specific tax advice

If you already intend to donate, ask the charity and your tax adviser whether it can accept the shares and how the transfer would be valued. IRS Publication 526 explains rules for capital-gain property, holding periods and situations in which a deduction can be limited or reduced: IRS Publication 526 (2025), Charitable Contributions. Do not promise yourself a deduction, assume every recipient qualifies or describe a stock donation as automatically tax-free. The result depends on the asset, how long you held it, the recipient and other facts.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting accounts instead of exposure: Two custodians do not make one issuer two investments.
  • Ignoring funds: A broad-sounding label can conceal overlap or a narrow sector mandate.
  • Using an unsupported threshold: A percentage copied from a generic article may not fit your goals, income or liquidity.
  • Waiting for a perfect price: A concentration decision should be based on risk and plan, not a forecast you cannot verify.
  • Forgetting taxes and restrictions: A sale that cannot settle, or creates an unaffordable tax bill, is not a complete plan.
  • Replacing one concentration with another: Moving from one company into a single sector fund may change the ticker but not the underlying risk.
  • Leaving new contributions unchanged: Continued purchases can undo a carefully executed rebalance.
  • Treating leverage as diversification: Leveraged or inverse single-stock products can amplify complexity and volatility rather than spread risk.

Bottom line

Concentration risk is managed by making total exposure visible, selecting a target that fits your circumstances and rebalancing with taxes, costs, liquidity and restrictions in view. Redirecting new money may be the least disruptive route; selling part of the position is faster; a carefully verified diversified fund can simplify the replacement; and a charitable transfer is relevant only when it matches an existing giving plan and the tax rules support it. Recheck direct and indirect exposure after price changes and employer events so one company does not quietly become the plan.
