How to Make a Student Loan Repayment Plan That Fits Your Budget

The repayment plan that fits your budget is the one that covers the required payment without crowding out essentials and predictable costs, while keeping total interest and your payoff timeline in view. Start with reliable take-home income, verify your federal loan details, compare every plan you are eligible for in the official calculator, and then confirm the final terms with your servicer.

Income-driven repayment (IDR) plans can base payments on income and family size or dependents, but eligibility depends on loan type and timing. The figures shown by a calculator are estimates, not a promise of a particular bill. Private loans follow different contracts and are not covered by the federal plan rules described here.

1. Build a budget before you compare plans

A repayment plan cannot be judged from its monthly payment alone. First determine what your household can consistently pay after necessities and reasonable reserves.

Use dependable income

Use regular take-home pay rather than a best month, a temporary bonus, or gross salary. If income varies, use a conservative monthly average and test a lower-income scenario separately in the calculator. Include a second income only if it is reasonably dependable and available for household bills.

List essential and predictable costs

  • Housing, utilities, and basic communications
  • Food and household supplies
  • Transportation, fuel, and vehicle costs
  • Insurance premiums
  • Health-care and prescription costs
  • Minimum payments on other debts
  • Child care or other dependent care
  • Irregular expenses converted to monthly amounts, such as annual insurance, school costs, repairs, or required travel

After these items, set aside a reasonable amount for irregular bills and a cash reserve. The federal sources do not prescribe a universal percentage of income that is affordable, so do not treat a rule of thumb as a personal limit. Your available student-loan payment is whatever remains without forcing you to skip necessities or predictable obligations.

Write down a maximum comfortable payment

Separate two numbers: the amount you could pay in an unusually good month and the amount you can pay every month, including during a normal setback. Use the second number when you assess a plan. If a calculator result is above it, keep comparing eligible plans rather than assuming you must accept the first result.

2. Verify the loans behind the bill

Sign in to StudentAid.gov and record each federal loan’s type, original disbursement date, current balance, current repayment plan, servicer, and account notices. Federal eligibility can change with the loan type and the date the loan was first disbursed. A generic article cannot establish eligibility for your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep federal and private loans separate. The federal calculator and IDR rules do not determine a private lender’s payment. Review a private loan contract directly for its rate, term, and hardship options.

Check notices before choosing a plan

Repayment policy is changing. Federal Student Aid says a court order ended the SAVE Plan in March 2026. If your account is affected, follow the notice from your servicer, including the individual deadline for selecting another plan. The SAVE FAQ describes a 90-day selection period after notice and a further final 30-day notice; the dates are account-specific. A borrower who does not act may be placed in a fixed plan, and that payment could be higher than an available IDR payment. Read the current notice at Federal Student Aid’s SAVE Plan FAQ.

3. Compare plans with the official Repayment Calculator

Use Federal Student Aid’s Repayment Calculator after checking your account information. It can compare eligible plans and estimate the monthly payment, repayment period, principal and interest, total amount paid, possible IDR discharge, and possible Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) results.

  1. Open the calculator and identify your loans. Match the loan types and balances to the information in your StudentAid.gov account. Correct obvious data errors before relying on a result.
  2. Enter current income and family information. IDR calculations use income and family size or dependents. Use the information the application will require, not an optimistic estimate.
  3. Run alternate income scenarios. The calculator permits manual entry, so test a lower-income month, a raise, or a change in household size. Label each scenario so you do not confuse an estimate with your current facts.
  4. Compare the payment with your budget ceiling. A payment that fits only if every month goes perfectly is not a durable fit. Check the result against the amount left after essentials and reserves.
  5. Read the total cost. Compare total amount paid and the principal-versus-interest split, not just the first monthly bill. A lower payment can extend repayment and increase total interest.
  6. Check the payoff timeline. Review the estimated repayment period and end date. If you are pursuing PSLF or IDR discharge, examine the related estimate and the plan requirements rather than assuming any low payment qualifies.
  7. Save the assumptions. Keep a copy or screenshot of the inputs and results. The final payment and terms are set by the servicer after processing an application.

Federal Student Aid cautions: “The results provided by the Repayment Calculator are estimates only.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the calculator to narrow your choices, then submit the official application and wait for the servicer’s confirmation of the effective payment and date.

4. Understand the federal plan choices

The following figures are rules for eligible federal borrowers, not personal quotes. Confirm current availability in your account and with your servicer.

Plan Published payment rule
Income-Based Repayment (IBR) Generally 15% of discretionary income; 10% for qualifying “new borrowers.”
Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) The lesser of 20% of discretionary income or an adjusted payment on a 12-year fixed schedule.
Pay As You Earn (PAYE) 10% of discretionary income for eligible borrowers.
Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) 1% to 10% of adjusted gross income divided by 12, reduced by $50 per dependent claimed on the federal tax return.

Federal Student Aid’s current FAQ gives IBR a 25-year repayment period, or 20 years for qualifying new borrowers. ICR has a 25-year period, and PAYE has a 20-year period. Those periods affect the interest you may pay and the date a remaining balance could be eligible for discharge under the applicable rules. The FAQ does not turn these percentages into a personal dollar payment; the calculator and your servicer do that using your verified information. See the current IDR overview.

Fixed-payment options and loan timing

For loans disbursed before July 1, 2026, Federal Student Aid lists Standard, Graduated, and Extended fixed options. A loan disbursed on or after July 1, 2026 has Tiered Standard as the fixed-payment option. The plan available to you still depends on the loan and account details; use the current federal repayment-plan overview rather than inferring eligibility from the plan name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scheduled changes to PAYE and ICR

Federal Student Aid says PAYE and ICR are scheduled to be eliminated no later than July 1, 2028. If you are considering either plan, check the current application rules and any transition instructions before making a long-term decision. A plan that appears available today may not be open to new enrollment later.

5. Judge affordability, cost, and forgiveness together

Monthly cash-flow fit

Ask whether the required payment can be made after essentials, dependent care, insurance, and irregular-cost reserves. Do not count money that is already committed to another minimum payment. If the plan leaves no margin for a routine repair or medical bill, it is fragile even when the calculator labels it affordable.

Total projected cost

Use the calculator’s total amount paid and principal-and-interest breakdown. A plan with the smallest first payment can cost more over time if it keeps the balance outstanding longer. Compare the same assumptions across plans so an income change does not create a false advantage.

Payoff timing

Review the projected repayment period and end date. A faster payoff may require a larger payment but reduce interest; a longer period may protect current cash flow. Choose deliberately instead of treating the lowest monthly number as automatically best.

Eligibility and stability

Confirm loan type, original disbursement date, income, family size, and any notice-driven deadline. Recheck these facts whenever your household or employment changes. Plan rules are not static, particularly while federal legislation and court orders are changing access.

Forgiveness objectives

If you are working toward PSLF or an IDR discharge, verify that the proposed plan and your employment or loan requirements count. Do not assume that a period of nonpayment or a low bill advances forgiveness. The calculator’s PSLF and discharge displays are estimates, and qualifying status is determined under the applicable federal rules.

6. What to do when the payment is too high

Recheck the inputs

Compare the calculator’s loan list with your account, check whether income was entered as current and annual, and confirm family size or dependents. An incorrect balance, loan type, or income figure can produce a misleading result.

Compare every eligible alternative

Run the IDR and fixed options shown for your loans. Some eligible borrowers may receive a $0 IDR payment, but that is not a guarantee for every borrower. The result depends on income, family size, loan type, and current rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contact the servicer directly

Ask which plans you qualify for, what documentation is required, when the application must be submitted, and when the new payment will take effect. Federal Student Aid says servicer help is free; you do not need to pay a company to apply for a federal repayment plan or manage federal loans. Start with the contact information in your StudentAid.gov account and verify the effective date in writing or in your account messages.

Consider forbearance only as temporary relief

Federal Student Aid explains that “With forbearance, you won’t have to make a payment, or you can temporarily make a smaller payment.” Interest may accrue during forbearance, increasing what you repay, and you do not make progress toward PSLF or IDR forgiveness during the forbearance period. Federal guidance advises considering IDR first. Review the consequences and end date before accepting forbearance; it is not free forgiveness or a permanent budget solution. See Federal Student Aid’s forbearance guidance.

7. Apply, confirm, and maintain the plan

  1. Apply through the official federal process. Use the application path provided by StudentAid.gov or your servicer, and submit the income and family information requested.
  2. Wait for processing before changing your budget. Keep making the required payment under your current instructions unless the servicer tells you otherwise. A calculator result is not an approval.
  3. Confirm the effective date and amount. Check the servicer’s message, statement, or account page for the first due date, payment amount, interest rate, and autopay status.
  4. Set a payment reminder. If you use autopay, verify the bank account and withdrawal date. Federal Student Aid states that eligible borrowers enrolled in autopay by December 31, 2026, receive a 1% interest-rate reduction through June 30, 2028; confirm eligibility and enrollment terms with the servicer.
  5. Recertify IDR information annually. Federal Student Aid says borrowers must recertify income and family size each year. Put the deadline on your calendar and update information promptly after a material change.
  6. Rebuild the comparison after major changes. Revisit the calculator when income, household size, loan balance, employment, or plan rules change. A payment that fit last year may not fit after a raise, a job loss, a new dependent, or a policy change.

8. A practical decision checklist

  • I know my take-home income and the amount that remains after essential costs.
  • I converted predictable annual or irregular expenses into monthly amounts.
  • I have checked loan type, disbursement date, balance, current plan, servicer, and account notices.
  • I separated federal loans from private loans.
  • I compared all plans displayed as eligible in the official calculator.
  • I reviewed monthly payment, total amount paid, principal and interest, payoff date, and any PSLF or IDR-discharge estimate.
  • I checked current deadlines, including any notice related to SAVE or a plan transition.
  • I contacted the servicer rather than paying a third party for federal-loan application help.
  • I received confirmation of the final payment and effective date.
  • I recorded my annual IDR recertification deadline and a date to revisit the budget.

9. Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing by payment alone

The lowest monthly payment can come with a longer repayment period and higher total cost. Always read the total paid and payoff timing beside the payment.

Assuming an old plan is still available

SAVE ended after a March 2026 court order, and PAYE and ICR are scheduled for elimination no later than July 1, 2028. Check current notices and official plan pages before relying on an older article or statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating an estimate as a bill

The calculator models scenarios. Your servicer sets the final amount after processing your application, so budget for the confirmed figure and effective date.

Ignoring annual recertification

IDR information must be recertified annually. Missing that task can disrupt the payment calculation or leave you reacting to a changed bill instead of planning for it.

Paying for help that is available free

Federal Student Aid says servicer assistance is free. Be cautious of any company that asks for a fee to apply for or manage federal loans, promises a guaranteed payment, or asks you to stop communicating with your servicer.
