Start with your latest electric bill: find the name of your electric distribution utility and the bill’s current Price to Compare. Then use that exact utility territory in the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) Energy Choice Ohio residential Apples to Apples chart. Compare a supplier’s generation rate and contract terms with your own Price to Compare—not with a rate copied from another utility’s page or an old article.
A lower supply rate can reduce the generation portion of your bill, but it does not guarantee a lower total bill. Your local utility still sets distribution and transmission charges, and supplier offers can change. Verify the live chart and read the supplier’s contract immediately before enrolling.

What Ohio’s “Price to Compare” actually measures
The Price to Compare is the benchmark your utility uses for the supply, or generation, portion of residential electric service. It is expressed in cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). When you compare an alternate supplier’s offer with that figure, you are comparing the cost of electricity generation—not every charge on your bill.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Your distribution utility continues to deliver electricity, maintain lines, handle outages and assess delivery-related charges. Those distribution and transmission rates are utility-determined. Switching suppliers does not move you to a different delivery network, and a cheaper generation offer may not produce an equal reduction in the final bill if the offer includes fees, a variable rate or a short-lived promotion.

Ohio’s official Energy Choice Ohio Apples to Apples charts are organized by utility territory. They list current residential supplier offers, the terms attached to each offer and whether the supplier is actively enrolling customers. PUCO warns that suppliers are responsible for the accuracy of their own offers and that offers can change at any time. Treat the chart as a live comparison, not a permanent rate sheet.
Find the two numbers on your bill before shopping
1. Identify the electric distribution utility
Look near the account information, service-address section or supply-and-delivery summary on your latest bill. Record the exact utility name. Common territories include Ohio Power Company (formerly AEP Ohio), AES Ohio and Ohio Edison, but the correct choice is whichever utility is printed on your bill. A supplier rate from another territory is not a valid comparison for your account.
2. Record your current Price to Compare
The bill may show the Price to Compare in the supply section, in a “price to compare” explanation or in a separate rate notice. Record the number, its unit (usually dollars per kWh or cents per kWh) and the effective period. If your bill identifies an electric-heating or other special residential class, use the figure for that class rather than the typical residential figure shown in a general example.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Note your recent usage
Write down the kWh used for the latest billing period and, if available, the last 12 months. Usage lets you translate a rate difference into a realistic dollar estimate. A rate difference of one cent per kWh saves a different amount for a 400-kWh apartment than for a 1,500-kWh all-electric home.
Current utility-specific examples (verified October 13, 2026)
These figures illustrate why you must match the chart to your utility and customer class. They are dated examples, not a statewide Ohio rate or a promise of savings.
| Utility and customer class | Price to Compare | Effective period | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ohio Power Company residential | $0.1019/kWh | October 1–December 31, 2026 | Residential figure shown by Energy Choice Ohio for this period. |
| AES Ohio typical residential | $0.1086/kWh | June 1, 2026–May 31, 2027 | Typical residential figure; check your own bill for the applicable rate. |
| AES Ohio qualifying electric-heating residential | $0.0918/kWh | November 1, 2026–May 31, 2027 | Applies only to qualifying electric-heating customers; confirm eligibility and the bill’s figure. |
| Ohio Edison residential | $0.1107/kWh | October 1–December 31, 2026 | Residential figure for this period. |
| Ohio Edison qualifying electric-heating customer | Different figure may apply | September 1–May 31 | The chart directs qualifying customers to check the bill for the applicable rate. |
For example, comparing a supplier offer with Ohio Edison’s $0.1107/kWh figure is meaningful only for an Ohio Edison customer during the stated period. It is not a rate to use for an AES Ohio or Ohio Power Company account.

Use the official Apples to Apples chart step by step
- Open Energy Choice Ohio’s electric Apples to Apples comparison. Choose the residential view. The chart is provided by PUCO for participating Ohio utility territories.
- Select the utility printed on your bill. Do not choose a territory because its displayed Price to Compare looks lower. Your account’s delivery utility determines which benchmark applies.
- Set the customer category correctly. If the chart distinguishes typical residential, electric-heating or another class, select the category that matches your bill and eligibility.
- Compare the generation price with your bill’s Price to Compare. Keep both figures in the same units. Convert cents to dollars by dividing by 100 before multiplying by kWh.
- Read every offer field. Review rate type, contract term, start and end dates, monthly fees, early termination fees, renewable content, introductory pricing, promotion conditions and enrollment status.
- Check whether the supplier is actively enrolling. An offer displayed in the chart is not necessarily open for enrollment at the moment you click through. The chart identifies enrollment status, and suppliers are responsible for keeping their own offer information accurate.
- Confirm your eligibility and existing contract. PIPP PLUS enrollees cannot switch to an alternate supplier under the chart’s guidance. A customer already under a supplier contract may owe an early termination fee for changing before the contract expires.
- Reopen the chart immediately before enrollment. PUCO states that offers can change at any time. Save or print the offer details you accepted, including the rate, term, fees and promotion requirements.
Compare the whole offer, not just the headline rate
Generation price per kWh
The headline number is the supplier’s charge for generation. A lower number than your Price to Compare is potentially favorable, but only after you account for fixed monthly charges, introductory periods and contract conditions. Compare rates at the same precision; rounding a supplier’s rate too aggressively can hide a meaningful difference.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fixed versus variable rate
A fixed rate stays at the contracted price for the stated term unless the contract expressly allows a change for a defined reason. A variable rate can change during the term, often according to terms in the supplier agreement. A variable offer that is lower today can become more expensive later, so identify how and when the supplier may change it and whether you can leave without a fee.
Contract duration and effective dates
Check when the term begins, whether the first bill is prorated, and when the term ends. The date you enroll may not be the date the supplier starts serving your account. A low introductory price may apply only for a specified number of billing cycles, after which a different rate takes effect.
Early termination fee
Record the exact fee and the circumstances that trigger it. Some contracts waive a fee in limited situations; others charge a stated amount when service ends before the term. If you may move, sell the home or switch again soon, a slightly lower rate may not justify a large termination charge.
Monthly or recurring fees
A monthly supplier fee affects low-usage customers most. To express it as an equivalent energy charge, divide the monthly fee by your expected monthly kWh. For a hypothetical $10 monthly fee and 500 kWh of use, the fee adds $0.0200/kWh to the supply cost before any other charge. This conversion is only an illustration; use the fee and usage stated in your offer and bill.

Introductory pricing and promotions
Read the conditions attached to a promotional credit, gift, bill credit or introductory rate. Determine the qualifying enrollment date, minimum term, required payment method, usage limits and the standard rate after the promotion. A promotion that cannot be used by your account or expires before your high-usage season should not be valued as immediate savings.
Offer order and supplier responsibility
Do not interpret the order in which offers appear as a quality ranking. PUCO’s hub says offers populate in random order. The supplier—not PUCO—is responsible for the accuracy of its own offer, so compare the chart with the contract presented during enrollment.
Calculate a realistic supply-cost difference
Use this basic estimate:
Estimated generation difference = (your Price to Compare − supplier rate) × expected kWh − supplier fees + applicable credits.
Keep the result limited to the supply portion. It is not an estimate of the entire bill because utility delivery charges remain outside the supplier comparison.
Hypothetical example with no monthly fee
Suppose a bill shows a Price to Compare of $0.1019/kWh and a supplier offers a fixed $0.0950/kWh. At 800 kWh, the rate difference is $0.0069/kWh. Multiplying by 800 gives $5.52 for that billing period before taxes, utility charges, supplier fees or any other bill components. If usage changes, the dollar difference changes with it.
Hypothetical example with a monthly fee
Using the same 800 kWh and a $0.0069/kWh rate difference produces $5.52. A $9 monthly supplier fee would reduce that estimated advantage to negative $3.48 before other charges. The offer would not be cheaper on those assumptions, even though its per-kWh rate is lower.

Annualize cautiously
To estimate a year, repeat the calculation for each month’s expected usage rather than multiplying one mild-season bill by 12. Heating and cooling can change consumption substantially. If the Price to Compare or supplier rate changes during the year, use the rate that applies to each period.
Understand why a lower supply rate may not lower the total bill by the same amount
Your bill combines supply and delivery. The supplier comparison addresses generation; the local utility continues to bill distribution and transmission charges under its approved rates. Those delivery charges can rise or fall independently of the supplier rate. A customer may therefore see a smaller total-bill change than the generation calculation suggests, no change if fees offset the difference, or a higher total bill if a variable supplier rate increases.
Keep the supply calculation separate from utility charges when checking your first bill after a switch. Confirm that the supplier name, rate and start date match the contract, and that the utility’s delivery section remains present. A supplier switch does not eliminate outage reporting or delivery service from the local utility.

PIPP PLUS enrollment
The Energy Choice Ohio guidance specifically says PIPP PLUS enrollees cannot switch to an alternate supplier. If you participate in PIPP PLUS, verify your program rules before acting; do not enroll based solely on a chart offer.
Existing supplier agreement
Find your current contract’s expiration date, renewal language and early termination fee. Changing suppliers before expiration can trigger the fee. If the contract is close to ending, compare the cost of waiting with the cost of terminating early, using your actual usage and the fee amount.

Common mistakes that erase expected savings
- Using the wrong utility chart: A rate from another territory cannot be compared with your bill’s Price to Compare.
- Using an old article or screenshot: Supplier offers and utility benchmarks are time-sensitive. Recheck the live chart on the day you enroll.
- Comparing cents per kWh while ignoring fees: Add recurring fees and subtract only credits you are certain you qualify to receive.
- Assuming a fixed rate is always better: A fixed contract can include a termination fee or a higher rate after a promotion. Read the full term.
- Assuming a variable rate will remain low: Identify the adjustment method and your ability to cancel before choosing it.
- Counting delivery charges as supplier savings: The utility controls those charges; a supplier offer applies to generation.
- Treating offer order as a ranking: The official hub says the list populates randomly.
- Ignoring special customer classes: Electric-heating customers may see a different utility benchmark during the stated seasonal period.
- Enrolling while ineligible: PIPP PLUS restrictions and an existing contract can prevent a switch or create a fee.
- Failing to save the accepted terms: Without the contract details, it is harder to verify a disputed rate, fee or promotion.
How different households should evaluate an offer
Low-usage apartment
Prioritize monthly fees and minimum-use charges. A small per-kWh discount may be overwhelmed by a recurring fee. Calculate the fee’s equivalent cost using your typical monthly kWh rather than an average household figure.
All-electric or electric-heating home
Confirm whether the utility lists a special electric-heating Price to Compare and whether you qualify. Seasonal heating usage can make a small rate difference significant, but it also magnifies the effect of a variable rate or a post-introductory increase. Use winter kWh in a separate scenario instead of relying only on your annual average.
Household planning a move
Check the contract’s move-out and early-termination language before enrolling. A contract that looks cheaper for several months may cost more if you must end it early.
Customer seeking renewable content
Compare renewable-content percentages and the associated price or fee. Confirm that the renewable attribute is included for the entire term and identify what happens when the term ends.
Monitor the first bills after enrollment
- Check the supplier name and start date. The first bill may cover a transition period, so compare the service dates with your confirmation.
- Verify the generation rate. Match the billed rate to the accepted contract, accounting for any stated introductory period or prorating.
- Look for the monthly fee or promotion. Confirm that recurring charges and promised credits appear as described.
- Keep delivery charges separate. A utility delivery increase is not evidence that the supplier rate was misapplied.
- Recalculate using actual kWh. Compare the bill’s usage with your estimate; a different number of kWh changes the dollar result.
If the rate, fee or promotion does not match the contract, contact the supplier first with the account number and accepted terms. Keep copies of bills and communications. For utility-service questions, use the contact information printed on your bill and the official PUCO consumer resources.
When to repeat the comparison
Repeat the process when your supplier contract approaches expiration, when a variable rate changes, when an introductory period ends, or when the utility’s Price to Compare changes. Seasonal benchmarks can also change, especially for customers with electric-heating classifications. Because the official chart can change at any time, set a reminder to review it before each new contract rather than relying on a saved screenshot.

Bottom line: compare your utility’s benchmark, then read the contract
The most reliable way to seek a lower Ohio electric bill is to start with the utility and Price to Compare printed on your own bill, select that same territory in PUCO’s residential Apples to Apples chart, and evaluate the complete supply offer. A lower generation rate may help, but fees, variable pricing, contract penalties, eligibility limits and utility delivery charges determine whether the total bill actually falls. Rates and enrollment status are live information, so verify them again immediately before you switch.
