Confirm the change. To restore use, return to the same control and choose Unlock, Unfreeze, or Unblock.
The labels, eligible cards, and transactions affected are issuer-specific. A lock usually stops new purchases, but it may not stop pending authorizations, recurring bills, digital-wallet payments, fees, refunds, or transactions made with another card on the account. Treat the examples below as illustrations of how different banks implement the feature, not as universal instructions.

Lock a card in six steps
- Open the official banking app. Use the app you normally use to manage the account, rather than a third-party wallet or a search result that asks for your credentials.
- Sign in and select the credit-card account. If you have several cards, check the last four digits or card image before changing a setting.
- Open card management. Look for a menu named Manage Card, Card Management, Settings, or a similar control.
- Choose the temporary control. Common labels are Lock Card, Freeze Card, Block Card, or a switch that changes from on to off.
- Confirm the action. Some apps ask you to review a warning or authenticate again. Wait for an on-screen confirmation and check that the card status visibly changed.
- Keep monitoring the account. A lock is not a fraud report and does not necessarily stop every kind of payment. Review activity and contact the issuer if the card is lost, stolen, or used without permission.
If you only misplaced the card and expect to find it, a reversible lock can buy time. If you know the card was stolen or see an unrecognized transaction, use the issuer’s lost-card or fraud-reporting process instead of relying on the toggle.
What to have ready before you lock the card
- Know which physical card you are changing. Compare the card image or last four digits, especially when several cards share one login.
- Make sure you can complete the app’s normal sign-in or additional authentication. Do not give a caller or message sender your password or one-time code.
- Note any payment you cannot afford to interrupt, such as a subscription, utility bill, hotel deposit, or travel booking. Find out whether it is a card-on-file charge, a direct debit, or another type of instruction.
- If the card is missing, record when you noticed and review recent activity before deciding whether a temporary lock is appropriate.
A lock is a control on the selected card, not necessarily on every card, token, or account instruction connected to your account. If you use a supplementary card or a device wallet, identify those separately before you assume they are covered.

Where the control appears in major bank apps
These official examples show the range of menu names and coverage. Your bank may use a different path or may not offer a temporary lock for every card.
| Issuer and market | App path | How to reverse it | Important coverage detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rogers Bank, Canada | Sign in → Manage Card → Lock/Unlock Card → Lock Card | Return to the same page and tap Unlock Card | Supplementary cards cannot be locked through this feature. |
| City National Bank, United States | Account Summary → Settings → Card Management → choose the card → use the lock toggle → confirm | Use the same card-management toggle | The bank also provides a browser route; its lock is described as preventing new purchases. |
| HSBC Singapore | Cards → select the card → Block card or Unblock card | Choose Unblock card from the card screen | A primary cardholder can manage primary and supplementary cards individually. |
| HSBC UK | Select the card → Block this card or Unblock this card | Choose Unblock this card | The freeze affects many card services, but the bank says some transaction types may remain unaffected. |
The wording in an app can change after an update, and a feature can depend on the card type, account role, or country. If you cannot find a control, search the bank’s in-app help for lock card or freeze card. Use the support number or secure message channel shown inside the official app if the feature is unavailable or the card is already missing.
What a temporary lock can and cannot stop
A card lock generally prevents the issuer from approving new attempts to use that card. It is not a universal cancellation command. Payment networks and merchants classify transactions differently, and an authorization may have been approved before you activated the lock. The issuer’s own description is the controlling source for your account.
Recommended Free Tools
| Issuer | Transactions the issuer says a lock blocks | Transactions the issuer says may continue |
|---|---|---|
| Rogers Bank | New purchases | Pre-authorized recurring payments, pending transactions, credits, and refunds |
| City National Bank | New purchases | Recurring bills and subscriptions |
| HSBC Singapore | Many point-of-sale, contactless, device-wallet, online, and ATM transactions | Account-based direct debits and some recurring transactions; a subscription classified as non-recurring by the merchant or acquirer can be declined |
| HSBC UK | Most contactless and online payments and cash-machine services | Direct debits, standing orders, digital-wallet transactions, recurring payments, and supplementary-card transactions may be unaffected; the bank does not guarantee that every transaction will be stopped |
| JPMorgan | New purchases, cash advances, and balance transfers | Fees, credits, digital-wallet purchases, and repeating transactions |
Pending authorizations
A pending transaction is an authorization already sent for approval or held by the merchant. Because it predates the lock, the lock may not reverse it. A hotel, car-rental company, fuel station, or other merchant can also place a hold that remains visible until the merchant completes or releases it. Do not treat the lock screen as proof that every pending amount has been cancelled.
Subscriptions, recurring bills, and direct debits
Recurring payment handling is the most common source of surprises. Some issuers allow a previously authorized subscription to continue; others distinguish between a card-on-file charge, a direct debit from the account, and a transaction that the merchant submits as a new or non-recurring payment. If a payment is essential, check the issuer’s specific policy and the merchant’s billing method before locking the card. A lock may prevent a new subscription charge, allow an existing recurring instruction, or have no effect because the money is pulled directly from the bank account.
Do not use a lock as a substitute for cancelling a subscription. The merchant may continue to regard your contract as active, and a later charge could be submitted under a category the issuer treats differently. Contact the merchant if you need the billing relationship ended or moved to another card.

Digital wallets and supplementary cards
Wallet purchases can be treated separately from physical-card purchases. Some issuers continue to authorize a transaction made through a device wallet even while the physical card is locked; others block the wallet token as part of the freeze. An authorized user or supplementary card may also have a separate status. Rogers excludes supplementary cards from its lock feature, while HSBC Singapore lets a primary cardholder manage primary and supplementary cards individually. Check each card or token rather than assuming one switch covers the whole account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCash advances, fees, refunds, and credits
Depending on the issuer, a lock can cover cash advances and balance transfers as well as purchases, or it can leave those functions outside the control. Account fees, credits, and refunds may continue because they are not new purchase authorizations. If you are trying to prevent a specific charge, ask the issuer whether the lock applies to that transaction type and contact the merchant when appropriate.
Compare a bank’s lock feature before relying on it
If you are evaluating how well the feature fits your situation, compare five points in the issuer’s own explanation:
- Access: Where does the control appear, and can you toggle it from the app and browser?
- Scope: Does it cover in-store, online, contactless, ATM, cash-advance, balance-transfer, and device-wallet use?
- Existing instructions: What happens to pending authorizations, recurring payments, direct debits, standing orders, and fees?
- Other cards: Are supplementary or authorized-user cards managed separately?
- Escalation: How do you move from a temporary lock to a permanent lost-or-stolen report and replacement?
This checklist prevents a common mistake: choosing a bank because it offers a prominent “lock” button while overlooking exceptions that matter more, such as a recurring bill or a wallet token.
Locking is different from reporting a lost, stolen, or compromised card
Use a temporary lock when the card may be somewhere safe but you need immediate protection while you look for it. Unlock it only after you have physically recovered the card and reviewed recent activity.

| Situation | Best action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Card is probably misplaced at home or in a bag | Apply the temporary lock, search, and monitor transactions | You can restore use without replacing the card if it turns up. |
| Card is definitely lost or stolen | Use the issuer’s permanent lost-or-stolen process and request a replacement | A temporary toggle does not cancel the card or issue a new number. |
| You see a transaction you do not recognize | Lock the card if available, then contact the issuer immediately through its fraud channel | The lock alone does not create a fraud case or determine liability. |
| Another person may know the card details | Report suspected compromise and follow the issuer’s replacement instructions | Reactivating the same card could expose the account again. |
City National tells customers who suspect unauthorized use to call immediately. HSBC Singapore allows a lost or stolen credit card to be permanently blocked and a replacement requested through the app or by phone. JPMorgan distinguishes locking from cancelling and replacing a card. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises checking transactions and reporting a lost card promptly. Keep the confirmation number or secure-message record from your report.

How to unlock a card safely
- Confirm that you have the physical card. Do not unlock a card that is still missing or may be in someone else’s possession.
- Review recent activity. Look for unfamiliar pending and posted transactions before restoring use.
- Open the same card-management screen. The control normally changes to Unlock, Unfreeze, or Unblock.
- Confirm the reversal. Wait for the app to show an active or unlocked status. If the app displays a processing message, do not repeatedly tap the control.
- Test only when necessary. If you need to make a purchase, use a small, trusted transaction and verify the result. An unsuccessful test can reflect a separate issue such as an expired card, a merchant decline, or a fraud restriction.
Unlocking restores the card’s normal status; it does not erase a pending authorization, reverse a completed payment, or resolve a disputed transaction. Those issues require the issuer or merchant’s normal process.
If you cannot find the lock option
- Check the selected card. The feature may exist for a primary card but not for a supplementary or authorized-user card, or it may require the primary cardholder’s login.
- Look under several labels. Review the card screen, settings, security, and card-management menus for Lock, Freeze, Block, or a status toggle.
- Update the official app through your device’s normal app store. Do not install an imitation app from a link in an unsolicited message.
- Use the bank’s secure help channel. Ask whether your card type and country support temporary blocking and whether the bank can place the restriction for you.
- Call the lost-or-stolen line if the card is missing. Do not delay a formal report while searching for a menu option.
- Check for a separate fraud hold. An issuer may restrict a card for security reasons, in which case the normal self-service toggle may not work.
Never assume that an absent button means the card is already protected. Confirm the status with the issuer.
How to check that the lock did what you intended
After confirmation, capture or note the time and the status shown in the app. Read the accompanying explanation for exceptions, especially references to recurring payments, wallets, ATMs, cash advances, pending transactions, or supplementary cards.

Separate pending items you recognize from unfamiliar activity, and report the latter promptly. A lock can prevent a new authorization while an earlier authorization is still completed, so the appearance of a charge after locking does not by itself prove that the control failed.
If a subscription or bill must not run, contact the merchant as well as the bank. Cancelling a card lock does not cancel a contract, and locking a card does not necessarily cancel a recurring instruction. Ask the merchant for written confirmation of any billing change and retain it with your account records.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Locking the wrong card: Verify the card image or last four digits before confirming.
- Assuming “blocked” means permanently cancelled: In many apps it is a reversible setting; verify whether the screen says temporary lock or permanent block.
- Ignoring another cardholder: A supplementary card can have its own status and may remain usable.
- Forgetting digital wallets: A wallet token may follow different rules from the plastic card.
- Waiting to report fraud: A lock does not open a dispute or establish when unauthorized use occurred.
- Repeatedly tapping the switch: If the app shows processing, wait for a final status or contact the issuer instead of creating uncertainty about the setting.
Practical decisions before you tap the button
- Need a pause while you search? Lock the card and verify the status.
- Need every future charge stopped? Read the issuer’s exceptions and cancel or change recurring arrangements with the merchant.
- Card stolen or details exposed? Report the card as lost, stolen, or compromised and request replacement.
- Unrecognized transaction? Contact the issuer’s fraud team immediately; do not wait to see whether the lock prevents another charge.
- Several cards or wallets attached? Check each physical card and digital token separately.
The safest general rule is simple: use the reversible lock for a temporary misplacement, but use the issuer’s permanent loss or fraud process when the card cannot be trusted again.

There is no universal rule. JPMorgan says digital-wallet purchases can continue, while HSBC Singapore includes device-wallet transactions among many uses a temporary block stops. Read your issuer’s explanation and check each wallet token.

It depends on the bank. Rogers Bank says supplementary cards cannot be locked through its feature. HSBC Singapore lets a primary cardholder manage primary and supplementary cards individually. Select and verify each card.

What should I do if my card is definitely stolen?
Use the issuer’s permanent lost-or-stolen process promptly and request a replacement. A temporary lock does not cancel the card or create a fraud report. HSBC Singapore says this can be done through the app or by phone; other issuers provide a dedicated reporting line.
What if I see an unfamiliar transaction after locking the card?
Contact the issuer’s fraud channel immediately, even if the card is locked. Review whether the item was pending before the lock, and keep the app confirmation and any case number. City National advises calling immediately when unauthorized use is suspected.
Why can’t I find a lock button in my bank app?
The feature may use another label, apply only to certain card types, require the primary cardholder’s login, or be unavailable in your country. Check the card, settings, and security menus, then use the bank’s secure help channel. If the card is missing, call the lost-or-stolen line without waiting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does unlocking reverse a payment that already went through?
No. Unlocking changes the card’s status; it does not erase a pending authorization, reverse a completed payment, cancel a subscription, or resolve a dispute. Contact the merchant or issuer through the normal process for those issues.
The Bottom Line
Use your bank app’s Lock, Freeze, or Block control for a temporary misplacement, then verify the status and monitor activity. Because pending, recurring, wallet, ATM, fee, refund, and supplementary-card rules vary by issuer, read the explanation for your specific card. If the card is stolen, compromised, or linked to an unrecognized transaction, report it through the bank’s permanent loss or fraud process instead of relying on a reversible toggle.
