How to Link Your Mobile Number to Aadhaar When You No Longer Have the Old Number

If you no longer control the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, update the number in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) or an authorised Aadhaar enrolment and update centre. UIDAI’s current guidance directs people in this situation to a centre because the app’s alternative-number process requires an OTP sent to the old number as well as one sent to the new number. At the centre, UIDAI says the old number and a supporting document are not required.

What to do when the old Aadhaar number is unavailable

Your practical route is an in-person demographic update. “Linking” a number to Aadhaar means replacing or registering the mobile number in UIDAI’s Aadhaar record; it is not the same as linking Aadhaar to a bank account, PAN, or a telecom account.

  1. Locate an Aadhaar enrolment and update centre, or a UIDAI-run Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
  2. Book a free ASK appointment if that is convenient, or check whether the location accepts walk-ins.
  3. Attend personally and ask for a mobile-number update.
  4. Review the displayed fee, submit the request, and retain the acknowledgement slip.
  5. Use the acknowledgement details to monitor the update status.

Do not wait for an online OTP workaround when the old number is inaccessible. UIDAI’s app FAQ specifically sends this case to an ASK or authorised centre.

Why the Aadhaar app usually cannot solve this particular problem

UIDAI’s newer Aadhaar app includes mobile-update functions in some circumstances. However, its stated flow for registering the app with a different number requires OTP verification on both the old registered number and the new number, along with the app’s applicable face-authentication step. If the old SIM or number is lost, disconnected, or otherwise unreachable, you cannot complete that two-number verification.

That limitation is different from saying that the app never supports mobile updates. The relevant distinction is access to the old registered number. If you can receive the old OTP, follow the app’s current on-screen requirements. If you cannot, use the centre route instead; do not rely on an agent claiming to bypass UIDAI’s verification.

Choose the route that matches your situation

Route Old-number OTP Where you complete it Appointment Fee and practical fit
Aadhaar app flow Required in the alternate-number scenario described by UIDAI, together with an OTP to the new number In the app, subject to its current registration and face-authentication requirements No centre visit if every stated requirement can be met Not the workaround when the old number is inaccessible; current app charge, if any, is not stated in the cited centre guidance
UIDAI-run ASK Not required for the centre mobile update In person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra Free appointment booking is available; walk-in token arrangements may also exist locally ₹75 for a separately performed demographic update on UIDAI’s current fee listing, including applicable taxes
Authorised enrolment and update centre Not required for the centre mobile update In person at an authorised centre offering demographic updates Depends on the centre; verify before travelling Confirm the displayed charge and the amount printed on your acknowledgement slip

For the situation in the title, the second or third row is the route UIDAI directs you to use. The app route is relevant only when its old-number OTP and other stated checks can actually be completed.

Step 1: Find a centre that can perform a mobile update

Use UIDAI’s centre locator

Search UIDAI’s Bhuvan Aadhaar locator for an enrolment and update centre near you. Select a location that lists demographic updates, because changing a mobile number is a demographic update. A centre that only handles limited services may not be able to accept the request.

Consider an Aadhaar Seva Kendra

UIDAI-run ASKs are designed for Aadhaar enrolment and update services. UIDAI lists their normal hours as 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time, seven days a week, subject to national or regional holidays. Hours and available services can vary by location, so check the particular centre before making a trip.

Verify before you travel

  • Confirm that mobile-number or demographic updates are offered.
  • Check whether the centre is operating on your intended date.
  • Ask whether it uses appointments, walk-in tokens, or both.
  • Use only a centre identified through UIDAI’s official channels or an authorised enrolment network.

Step 2: Book an appointment or plan for a walk-in

Appointment booking

UIDAI says booking an appointment at a UIDAI-run ASK is free and does not require access to the Aadhaar-registered mobile number. Use the appointment service, choose the relevant update service, select a centre and time, and save the confirmation shown at the end. The booking system’s exact screens can change, so follow the labels currently displayed rather than an older screenshot or third-party guide.

Walk-in visits

ASK locations may also issue tokens for walk-in visitors. Token availability is managed locally and can run out before closing, particularly at busy centres. If you choose a walk-in, arrive with enough time for token issuance and verification, and call or check the centre information first where possible.

You do not need to pay a private appointment broker. An appointment at a UIDAI-run ASK is free; a person asking for money to obtain a “special” token is not providing a UIDAI requirement.

Step 3: Attend the centre and request the update

What to take

Take your Aadhaar number or Aadhaar document if you have it, the new mobile number you want recorded, and your appointment confirmation or walk-in token details. UIDAI’s enrolment and update FAQ says the old mobile number and a supporting document are not required for this mobile update. Carrying identification may still make it easier for staff to locate your record, but do not mistake an optional convenience for a stated document requirement.

What happens at the counter

  1. Tell the operator that the mobile number previously registered with Aadhaar is no longer accessible and that you want to replace or register it.
  2. Provide the new number carefully. Check every digit before the operator submits the request.
  3. Complete the identity or biometric verification requested at the centre. The operator will explain the applicable capture or authentication step.
  4. Review the information displayed before final submission, especially the new number and spelling of your name or address if the request includes any other update.
  5. Pay the displayed amount and collect the acknowledgement slip.

Do not hand your phone to an unknown person for permanent access, disclose an OTP to anyone who is not the authorised operator, or sign a blank form. Read the request details on the screen or printed acknowledgement before leaving.

The centre process is designed for the person whose old number is unavailable, so an operator should not send you away simply because you cannot produce an OTP from that lost or disconnected SIM. If a particular outlet cannot handle the request, confirm whether it is an authorised centre offering demographic updates and ask where UIDAI directs you next.

How much the update costs

UIDAI’s current Aadhaar Seva Kendra fee listing charges ₹75 for a separately performed demographic update, which includes a mobile-number update. The listing says applicable taxes are included. The amount payable at your centre should be displayed there and printed on the acknowledgement slip; use those two checks if a counter quotes a different figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older UIDAI handbook and annual-report material refers to ₹50 for demographic updates. That is an earlier figure, not the current ASK schedule used for this guidance. Do not rely on an old blog, social-media post, or saved screenshot for the price.

Fee information How to interpret it
₹75 UIDAI’s current listed amount for a separately performed demographic update, including applicable taxes
₹50 An older amount found in previous UIDAI material; do not treat it as the current ASK charge
Centre display and acknowledgement The immediate practical confirmation of what your location has charged for the submitted request

A mobile update does not require a biometric device, special paperwork kit, paid “verification” service, or a third-party appointment service. The centre supplies the equipment needed for its process.

Step 4: Keep the acknowledgement and track the request

The acknowledgement slip records the details you need to follow the request, such as the update request reference. Keep the original safe and photograph it only as a backup; obscure the number if you share the image publicly.

Use UIDAI’s update-status service with the details printed on the acknowledgement. A submitted request is not automatically an approved change. UIDAI states that requests are checked, verified, and validated, and that submission does not guarantee that the Aadhaar data will be updated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Processing time

UIDAI says that normally 90% of Aadhaar update requests are completed within 30 days. This is a general processing benchmark, not a promise that your request will finish within 30 days. Verification issues, incorrect information, technical problems, or rejection can make an individual request take longer or fail.

How you will be notified

For a mobile or email update, UIDAI says it does not send a replacement Aadhaar letter. Notification is sent to the mobile number or email supplied in the request. Keep the new SIM active and able to receive messages while the request is being processed.

Because no replacement Aadhaar letter is sent for this type of change, the acknowledgement and status result are especially important. Save the request reference until the status confirms completion and you have successfully received an Aadhaar OTP on the new number.

If the update is delayed, rejected, or the new number still does not work

No status appears

  • Re-enter the acknowledgement or request number exactly as printed, including any leading zeros.
  • Allow for processing time; a request may not appear immediately after submission.
  • Contact UIDAI through 1947 or [email protected] if the status remains unavailable and you have the acknowledgement details.

The request is rejected

Read the reason shown in the status result or supplied by UIDAI. A rejection means the request did not pass validation; it is not evidence that an old-number OTP is required at a centre. Correct the stated issue and submit a fresh request at an authorised centre, paying the applicable current fee again if a new transaction is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The new number receives no message

First confirm that the number printed on the acknowledgement is correct and that the SIM can receive ordinary SMS messages. Check the update status rather than assuming that silence means approval. If the status shows completion but messages still do not arrive, contact UIDAI with the request reference and ask for the record to be checked.

A centre asks for the old number or a document

Explain that you are requesting the mobile update covered by UIDAI’s enrolment/update FAQ, which says the old number and supporting document are not required. If staff cannot resolve the issue, ask for the centre’s supervisor and retain the receipt or token details. You can also seek assistance through UIDAI’s helpline or grievance contact.

Protect yourself from scams and unnecessary costs

  • Use an ASK or an authorised enrolment and update centre identified through UIDAI’s channels.
  • Do not buy a biometric reader or install software to perform the update yourself.
  • Do not pay an agent who claims to bypass the old-number OTP or guarantee approval.
  • Never disclose an OTP, Aadhaar authentication code, or app login details to someone outside the authorised process.
  • Check that the fee is displayed and that the amount on the acknowledgement matches what you paid.
  • Keep the acknowledgement private; it contains a request reference that can be useful to someone attempting social engineering.

The old number being unavailable does not justify using an unofficial shortcut. The centre process is the official recovery path and does not depend on receiving an OTP at the lost number.

What changes after the mobile number is updated

Once UIDAI accepts the update, future Aadhaar services that send OTPs will use the newly registered number. Updating Aadhaar does not automatically change the phone number held by your bank, insurer, employer, telecom provider, tax account, or other service. Contact each organisation separately if you also need those records changed.

If you have more than one phone number, choose one that you control reliably for the long term. A number that is regularly disconnected or shared with another person can create the same access problem again.

Quick checklist before you leave home

  • New mobile number is active and can receive SMS.
  • Centre offers demographic or mobile updates.
  • Appointment confirmation or walk-in plan is ready.
  • Aadhaar number or document is available if you have it, although UIDAI says a supporting document is not required for this update.
  • Old-number OTP is not needed for the in-person route.
  • Enough time is allowed for token issuance, verification, and payment.
  • Acknowledgement slip is collected and stored safely.
  • Update-status details are retained for later checking.

Official assistance

For centre, fee, status, or grievance questions, contact UIDAI at 1947 or [email protected]. Give the operator your acknowledgement details, centre name, and the date of submission. Do not send your full Aadhaar number or OTP in an unverified public forum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the Aadhaar mobile number online if I no longer have the old SIM?

No. UIDAI’s guidance for a person who has lost or cannot access the old registered number is to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised enrolment and update centre. The app’s alternate-number flow requires OTPs to both the old and new numbers, so it does not bypass the missing old-number OTP.

Do I need the old mobile number or a document at the centre?

UIDAI’s enrolment and update FAQ says the old number and a supporting document are not required for this mobile-number update. Take your new active number and any appointment or token details. Having your Aadhaar number or document may help staff locate the record, but it is not listed as a required supporting document for this request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does it cost to update a mobile number?

UIDAI’s current ASK fee listing shows ₹75 for a separately performed demographic update, including applicable taxes. Check the amount displayed at the centre and printed on your acknowledgement slip. Older UIDAI material mentions ₹50, but that is not the current ASK schedule.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

UIDAI-run ASKs may provide walk-in tokens, but availability is handled locally and tokens can run out. Appointment booking at an ASK is free and does not require access to the Aadhaar-registered mobile number. Confirm the centre’s current arrangement before travelling.

How long will the new number take to work?

UIDAI says normally 90% of update requests are completed within 30 days. That is a general benchmark, not a guarantee. Each request is verified and validated and may be accepted or rejected. Track the request with the details on your acknowledgement slip.

Will UIDAI send a new Aadhaar letter after the mobile update?

No. For mobile or email updates, UIDAI says it does not send a replacement Aadhaar letter. Notification is sent to the mobile number or email supplied in the request, so keep the new SIM active and retain your acknowledgement details.

What if the centre says I must bring the old number?

Explain that you are requesting the mobile update covered by UIDAI’s enrolment/update FAQ, which says the old number and supporting document are not required. Ask for a supervisor if necessary, verify that the outlet is authorised and offers demographic updates, and contact UIDAI at 1947 or [email protected] if the issue remains.

Does changing the Aadhaar number update my bank or PAN mobile number too?

No. The change applies to the mobile number in UIDAI’s Aadhaar record. Banks, insurers, employers, telecom providers, tax accounts and other organisations maintain separate records, so contact each one individually if you need their mobile number changed.

The Bottom Line

When the old Aadhaar-linked mobile number is unavailable, visit a UIDAI-run ASK or authorised update centre. The old number and a supporting document are not required for the centre request; the current listed fee for a separate demographic update is ₹75. Keep the acknowledgement, monitor status, and remember that UIDAI’s 30-day figure is a general benchmark rather than a guarantee.
